Richard Turere was born in Kenya,a country in Africa. When he was a young boy,his family raised
cows on their farm near Nairobi National Park.At night, lions often came out of the park and killed their
cows.Richard's family was very poor, and losing cows meant losing money they needed to live.
Richard tried many ways to keep the lions away.First,he used a scarecrow, but the lions soon found
out it was not real. Then he built a fire, but the lions were not afraid of it.He even stayed up all night to
watch the cows, but he was too tired to do this every day.
One night,Richard noticed something interesting. He was walking around with a flashlight, and the
lions stayed away.He realised that the lions were afraid of the moving light. This gave him an idea.At the
age of 13,Richard created the "lion lights"-a simple system of flashing lights around the farm. The lights
went on and off in different patterns, making the lions think people were walking around.
Richard's invention worked! The lions stopped coming to his family's farm.Soon, other farmers heard
about the lion lights and wanted to use them too.Richard's simple but clever idea has now been used in many
places in Kenya and other countries.
Richard's story shows us that teenagers can make a real difference in the world. If we pay attention to
the problems around us and use our creativity,we can find solutions that help both people and animals.
()5.Why did Richard need to find a way to keep lions away?
A.Because the lions were killing his family's cows.
B.Because he wanted to protect the lions.

(南通二模)If you were born in the20O0s,you are called the oh-ohs.Maybe you feel proud of
yourselves? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults think of you as the "face-down generation"because you use your phones so much. They
wonder how you will deal with school, friends and family.
Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt()and don't want to face the challenges of adult life.
Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by "helicopter parents".They were always there to
guide and help their children with a busy program.Because of this, today's youth seem to prefer to live like
teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up?Well,probably not.The fact is that many of today's
teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations.More young people volunteer to help
their neighbourhoods. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the
2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls'rights of going to school in poor areas.
So if you're one of the oh-ohs,there's reason to be hopeful about the future.Things are looking up for
the face-down generation.Chances are that you do great and laugh out loud.
()13.Which of the following is an oh-oh?
A.A girl who is good-looking.
B.A girl who is smart.
C.A boy who was born in 1999
D.A boy who was born in 2004.
()14.The oh-ohs are thought of as the "face-down generation"because they
A.use their phones too much
B.need to study hard in school
C.are interested in younger friends
D.are more creative than their parents
()15.What do "helicopter parents"do for their children?
A.They help them to face the challenges.
