46.Dear Chris,
I know you are interested in Chinese literature. I highly recommend you read “Journey to the West”.
It’s one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The story is full of magic and adventure. It tells the tale of a monk and his three disciples on a pilgrimage to obtain sacred texts. The characters are vivid and the plot is fascinating. Besides, it will give you a glimpse into Chinese culture and values.
I hope you like the book I recommend. I’m sure you’ll gain a lot. Look forward to hearing from you again.
Yours,
Li Hua

I decided to have a heart-to-heart talk with Leo. I expressed my sincere gratitude to him for giving me a hand when I was injured. I also told him that he was actually warm and helpful despite his quiet look. Hearing my words, Leo looked a little surprised. He then shared that he felt nervous to talk to others and worried that no one would like to stay with him. I comforted him patiently and promised that I would always be his friend. A faint smile appeared on his face again.
Since then, I’ve explored various ways to help Leo remove his shyness. I often invited him to join in our class games and spent some time chatting with him during breaks. I also encouraged him to show himself in group activities bravely. Gradually, Leo stepped out of his own world. He started to take the initiative to talk with our classmates and fit into our big family. Now, the little sapling we planted grows day by day, just like our friendship. That activity has made me understand that a little kindness can light up someone’s lonely world. I’ve made up my mind to be more sensitive and helpful in the future.

Instead, his parents educated him at home.Like many genius children, his teachers criticized him, calling him"unteachable,
absolutely talentless."Yet young Mach excelled at university in Vienna. He studied mathematics, physics and philosophy.
He was also boundlessly curious. He conducted all kinds of experiments, believing that theories must be tried, tested, and
proven in facts, but first formulated in the mind.He brought this rigorous (approach to his studies, believing that
true science is based on what actually happens and can be observed.

When it comes to back-to-school shopping or choosing makeup colors, the high school student Kayla asks ChatGPT
for guidance. However, she avoids using AI to do her homework and limits her interactions to everyday questions.
"Everyone uses AI for everything now. It's really taking over,"said Kayla."I think kids use AI to get out of thinking."
But many teenagers say they are increasingly interacting with AI as if it were a companion, capable of providing
advice and friendship.
More than 70%of teens have used AI companions and hear turn to them for help regularly, according to a new Media
from Common Sense study. For the last couple of years, concerns about cheating at school have dominated the conversation
around kids and Al.But artificial intelligence is playing a much larger role in many of their lives, becoming a go-to source
for personal advice,emotional support,every day decision-making and problem-solving
In the Common Sense Media survey,31%of teens said their conversations with AI companions were"as satisfying
or more satisfying"than talking with real friends.
试卷第3页(共9页)
Michael Robb, the study's lead author, warns that Adolescence is a crucial time for developing identity and social
skills, and AI companions should complement-not replace-real-world interaction."If teens are developing social skills
on AI platforms where they are constantly being favored without being challenged, not learning to consider other
perspectives, they may not be adequately prepared in the real world,"he said.
Researchers and educators worry about the cognitive costs for youths who rely heavily on Al,especially in their
creativity,critical thinking and social skills.
"All of us are struck by how quickly this blew up,"said Eva Telzer,a psychology and neuroscience professor."I
could see a kid that grows up with AI not seeing a reason to go to the park or try to make a friend.I'm worried that kids
could get lost in it.”
8.What does Kayla think of the use of AI among kids?
A.It gives them some advice and comfort.
B.It helps them escape from mental labor.
C.It pulls them back from the daily chores.
D.It enables them to get away from the reality.
9.How has the AI affected the teenagers?
A.Most of them have become entirely dependent on it.
B.Some of them have significantly improved their social skills.
C.Some of them have experienced different levels of satisfaction.
D.Most of them have effectively solved the problem of loneliness.
10.According to Robb, what is a possible risk of youth relying on AI companions?
A.Getting lost in a virtual world.
B.Missing out on practical skills.
C.Losing the ability of making friends.
D.Lacking preparation for the real world.
11.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To warn parents of the dangers of AI.
B.To analyze the mixed impact of AI on teens.
C.To inform the current trend of AI use in schools.D.To call for the ban on the use of AI among teens.

A new study of the elderly has found napping (too much in daytime may signal an increasing risk of
Alzheimer's disease.Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have reported the relationship between the two:
napping too much in daytime predicts an increased future risk of Alzheimer's,and a diagnosis of Alzheimer's speeds up the
increase in napping during aging.
"Daytime sleep behavior of older adults is often ignored, and an agreement for napping in clinical practice and health
care is still lacking,"said Peng Li,one of the researchers."Our team calls for a closer attention to 24-hour sleep patterns-
试卷第4页(共9页)
not only nighttime sleep but also a nap-for tracking the health of the elderly.
The researchers recognized that all previous studies on Alzheimer's disease assessed napping within a participant
only once, and most of them were subjective and questionnairebased. In the new study, more than 1,000 individuals, with
an average age of 81,were provided with Actical,a watch-like device,to wear on their wrist for up to 14 days. After nap
episodes were identified, the nap duration and frequency were calculated.
The results have suggested that napping too much in daytime may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer's,and that
faster yearly increase in napping may be a sign of worsening or unfavourable clinical development of the disease.
Researchers have acknowledged that although the method of the new study has been widely used in sleep field
studies,.they recognize that polysomnography(多导睡眠描记)is the gold standard for sleep scoring. Moreover, the
participants studied were the elderly, and therefore, the findings may not be easily translated to young people. In addition,
future studies should test whether a direct intervention in a nap can lower the risk of Alzheimer's.
"We hope to draw more attention to daytime sleep patterns and the importance of patients noting if their sleep
schedule changes over time,"said co-senior author Kun Hu of the Medical Biodynamics Program."Sleep changes are
critical in shaping the internal changes in the brain."
12.What does the new study of the elderly show?
A.The link between a nap and Alzheimer's.
B.The causes and symptoms ofAlzheimer's.
C.The proper amounts of daytime sleep.
D.The ways to improve the quality of sleep.
13.How did the researchers conduct the new study?
A.By asking about the participants'ideas.
B.By carrying out a particular questionnaire.
C.By tracking participants'sleep with a device.D.By assessing participants calculating tasks.
14.What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A.The method of the new study is perfect
B.The findings are suitable for all ages.
C.Further studies should be carried out.
D.Intervention can reduce the risk of Alzheirmer's.
15.What does Kun Hu talk about?
A.The patterns of daytime sleep.
B.The way to make sleep schedules.
C.The causes of brain changes.
D.The significance of the new study.

Last Friday, our class held a voluntary tree-planting activity in the city park. Before setting off,our head teacher Ms.
Wang reminded us to work well with our partners.I was paired with Leo,a quiet boy who hardly communicated with
classmates, always kept to himself and never took part in group activities.
We carried saplings (and necessary tools to our working spot. While other classmates chatted and worked
cheerfully,Leo kept digging the hole silently without a single word.I attempted to start conversations several times, yet he
only gave brief replies.Awkward silence hung between us,leaving me at a loss how to connect with him.
Eager to speed up our progress,I held the shovel()tightly and kept digging the hole hurriedly.Unfortunately,I hit
my right leg by accident.A sharp wave of pain swept over me at once.I fell onto the grass and could hardly stand up.My
face went pale and I could not move my leg.Seeing my situation,Leo froze (for a second. Then without any
hesitation,he put down his shovel quickly and walked straight towards me.
He knelt down beside me,checked my injury gently and helped me move to a smooth stone bench to rest.Having
made a quick judgment in his mind,he fetched cold water and the first-aid box to deal with my injury. After all those,he
went back to continue digging the hole all by himself silently.Minutes later,I felt better and went to Leo.We worked side
by side.As we finished planting the sapling, the warm sunset wrapped us and the tender young tree.
I stared at our newly-planted sapling and turned to look at Leo.To my surprise,I found a soft smile on his face and it
was the first time that I had seen him relax completely.A strange thought crossed my mind-Maybe I was wrong about
Leo.

“All of us are struck by how quickly this blew up,” said Eva Telzer, a psychology and neuroscience professor. “I could see a kid that grows up with AI not seeing a reason to go to the park or try to make a friend. I’m worried that kids could get lost in it.”

A new study of the elderly has found napping (小睡) too much in daytime may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital have reported the relationship between the two: napping too much in daytime predicts an increased future risk of Alzheimer’s, and a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s speeds up the increase in napping during aging.
“Daytime sleep behavior of older adults is often ignored, and an agreement for napping in clinical practice and health care is still lacking,” said Peng Li, one of the researchers. “Our team calls for a closer attention to 24-hour sleep patterns — not only nighttime sleep but also a nap — for tracking the health of the elderly.
The researchers recognized that all previous studies on Alzheimer’s disease assessed napping within a participant only once, and most of them were subjective and questionnaire—based. In the new study, more than 1,000 individuals, with an average age of 81, were provided with Actical, a watch-like device, to wear on their wrist for up to 14 days. After nap episodes were identified, the nap duration and frequency were calculated.
The results have suggested that napping too much in daytime may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s, and that faster yearly increase in napping may be a sign of worsening or unfavourable clinical development of the disease.
Researchers have acknowledged that although the method of the new study has been widely used in sleep field studies, they recognize that polysomnography (多导睡眠描记) is the gold standard for sleep scoring. Moreover, the participants studied were the elderly, and therefore, the findings may not be easily translated to young people. In addition, future studies should test whether a direct intervention in a nap can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.
“We hope to draw more attention to daytime sleep patterns and the importance of patients noting if their sleep schedule changes over time,” said co-senior author Kun Hu of the Medical Biodynamics Program. “Sleep changes are critical in shaping the internal changes in the brain.”
12.What does the new study of the elderly show?
A.The link between a nap and Alzheimer’s. B.The causes and symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
C.The proper amounts of daytime sleep. D.The ways to improve the quality of sleep.
13.How did the researchers conduct the new study?
A.By asking about the participants’ ideas. B.By carrying out a particular questionnaire.
C.By tracking participants’ sleep with a device. D.By assessing participants calculating tasks.
14.What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A.The method of the new study is perfect. B.The findings are suitable for all ages.
C.Further studies should be carried out. D.Intervention can reduce the risk of Alzheirmer’s.
15.What does Kun Hu talk about?
A.The patterns of daytime sleep. B.The way to make sleep schedules.
C.The causes of brain changes. D.The significance of the new study.

While traveling in a group makes a journey fun, it can come with challenges. Unlike solo travel, you will probably have less control over the itinerary (旅程) when you travel in a group. 16 No matter who’s in your group, you can have a life-changing journey together. Here are some tips for making group travel as smooth as possible:
17 If you’re in charge of planning the itinerary, avoid arranging too many activities in on day and set aside time for relaxation. For example, one day, you might book an adventurous trip, like hiking to ancient ruins, and plan to relax on the beach the next day. This way, you can avoid stress and keep the group energized. Be open to new experiences. If someone in your group suggests trying something you never considered before, whether it is sampling frog porridge in Singapore or riding an all-terrain vehicle(全地形车) in Mexico, be open to the new idea. 18
Stay in touch. Ensure everyone in your group has a way to communicate with each other. 19 You might exchange phone numbers, set up a group text or print a list of contact information.
Be patient. 20 For example, you may have to wait for someone in the morning before setting out or stick around a souvenir shop until a friend finishes browsing. Before you begin your trip, set realistic expectations and get into a flexible mindset. If you can go with the flow during your group trip, you will be more likely to have a relaxing experience.
A.Vote on activities.
B.Create a balanced itinerary.
C.Thus, you might discover something new about yourself.
D.It’s ok to skip a group activity if you need some time alone.
E.Besides, you may be around people with different preferences.
F.If someone gets lost or the group break up, it’s easy to reconnect.
G.Traveling in a group means some activities will take longer than if you did them alone.

Scientists at South Korea’s Yonsei University have created a new type of hybrid rice that not only has a meaty pink color but is also packed with beef protein and fat cells.
Rice is already one of the most nutritious foods available in nature, but thanks to some scientific “magic”, it could soon become 36 sustainable replacement for meat. The new hybrid grains are firmer than natural grains, and when 37 (cook) they maintain their traditional appearance. While the new rice doesn’t yet taste like beef, it does offer an 38 (enjoy) flavor experience, which is characteristic of meat. Thanks to the animal cells, this new pink rice could one day become a complete meal by itself, 39 (ensure) a sufficient, sustainable food supply for the whole world.
“Imagine 40 (obtain) all the nutrients we need from cell-cultured protein rice,” said Park So-hyeon, co-author of the study. He said the team had experimented with different types of food products, 41 which they gained lots of understanding, but the models they got weren’t successful.
In the future, scientists plan to use sustainable supplies of cells 42 can be maintained in the lab. For now, the percentage of protein in the hybrid rice is still 43 (fair) low. So they are also exploring the 44 (possible) of mixing the rice with other types of meat or fish, in order to satisfy different tastes. 45 (replace) meat actually, researchers need to increase the rice’s protein content significantly.

Last Friday, our class held a voluntary tree-planting activity in the city park. Before setting off, our head teacher Ms. Wang reminded us to work well with our partners. I was paired with Leo, a quiet boy who hardly communicated with classmates, always kept to himself and never took part in group activities.
We carried saplings (树苗) and necessary tools to our working spot. While other classmates chatted and worked cheerfully, Leo kept digging the hole silently without a single word. I attempted to start conversations several times, yet he only gave brief replies. Awkward silence hung between us, leaving me at a loss how to connect with him.
Eager to speed up our progress, I held the shovel (锹) tightly and kept digging the hole hurriedly. Unfortunately, I hit my right leg by accident. A sharp wave of pain swept over me at once. I fell onto the grass and could hardly stand up. My face went pale and I could not move my leg. Seeing my situation, Leo froze (僵住) for a second. Then without any hesitation, he put down his shovel quickly and walked straight towards me.
He knelt down beside me, checked my injury gently and helped me move to a smooth stone bench to rest. Having made a quick judgment in his mind, he fetched cold water and the first-aid box to deal with my injury. After all those, he went back to continue digging the hole all by himself silently. Minutes later, I felt better and went to Leo. We worked side by side. As we finished planting the sapling, the warm sunset wrapped us and the tender young tree.
I stared at our newly-planted sapling and turned to look at Leo. To my surprise, I found a soft smile on his face and it was the first time that I had seen him relax completely. A strange thought crossed my mind — Maybe I was wrong about Leo.
