In 1872, a 12-year-old Chinese boy boarded a ship heading for the USA. He would be away from his parents for the next nine years. This young boy was Zhan Tianyou, who was destined to play a major role in the development of China’s railroads. Zhan was one of the first 30 boys chosen for the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM), founded by the Qing government to help China develop through education.
Recruiting (征募) these boys was not easy. The CEM’s original plan required parents to part with their sons for 15 years — a huge risk when few Chinese had traveled abroad, and many feared foreigners. A friend persuaded Zhan’s father to let him take the CEM test, and Zhan finally joined the group sailing to the USA.
After reaching the US west coast, Zhan and the others traveled by train to east coast schools. On the way, he was amazed by American industrial civilisation, especially the railroads and trains. In Connecticut, he studied at the Seaside Institute for Boys, where he became close to the headmaster’s family. Mrs. Northrop, the headmaster’s wife, noticed his talent for maths and encouraged him to study science and engineering — a suggestion that shaped his future.
Zhan did not ignore his studies in the US. He expanded his knowledge of science, took part in research, and graduated top of his class. In high school, he was impressed by the new American railroad system and saddened by China’s limited displays (mostly tea and silk) at a US exposition. Thus, he longed to rid China of the tough situation. These experiences led him to choose civil engineering (focused on railroads) at Yale University. He graduated first in 1881, but the Qing government recalled all CEM students that summer — only Zhan and one other finished college.
Zhan returned to China eager to build railroads. In 1888, he began his work, and later became famous for the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway (built across difficult and complex regions). Known as “the Father of China’s Railroad”, he served his country for 31 years, improving millions of lives.
4. Why did parents refuse CEM at first?
A. They doubted local education. B. They disliked long-distance trips.
C. They lacked enough travel cost. D. They worried about overseas risks.
5. What role did Mrs. Northrop play in Zhan’s life?
A. She arranged his travel to Yale. B. She inspired him to study engineering.
C. She taught him English at school. D. She introduced him to famous scholars.
6. What made Zhan determined to build railways?
A. Pressure from the government. B. Praise for US school education.
C. Concern over national underdevelopment. D. Expectation and support from his parents.
7. What can we infer about Zhan’s work?
A. It brought great benefits to people. B. It was finished within a decade.
C. It received foreign companies’ help. D. It mainly focused on city roads.
D 5. B 6. C 7. A

Villages have existed in England since the Roman period. There were free communities, but most were of dependent farmers. Life was hard, even when the country did not suffer from deadly diseases and hunger. The majority of England’s population was rural (乡村) until the 18th century, when a great shift towards towns and cities began. By the 19th century, people started to reexamine village life, longing to experience the way of living that was already disappearing.
Since 1945, the past has accelerated (加速) away from people at a faster rate than ever before. In 1969, in his landmark Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village, the famous English writer Ronald Blythe offered a realistic description detailing the end of the old English village. But the great English historian W. G. Hoskins suggested that the whole history of the country could be told through one village. Inspired by his view, Michael Wood filmed the TV series Michael Wood’s Story of England in the village of Kibworth.
And now time has moved on again. In some of the English villages, big farms have replaced smallholders (小农场主); private houses have become spa hotels. Despite these changes, the village still stands for the idea of community, a word more and more in use now as we search for our commonality (共性). It is a place of 500 or 1,000 people, where everyone knows each other and each other’s business, but always helps out in an emergency; a place where one can still feel connected and hold that dream of a harmonious vision of society.
Some of the English people feel concerned about immigrants, but their villages always have newcomers, just like Saxons, Angles, Normans, Africans and Bangladeshis in history. That is who they are. In reality, English villages have been deeply shaped more by inequality and class conflict than those newcomers.
So, as Hoskins suggested, if you were to learn about England, why not choose an English village, such as Handsworth near Birmingham? It was home to the Lunar Society of Matthew Boulton, as well as to musicians like Stevie Winwood and Joan Armatrading. Wouldn’t that be fun?
8. What was early rural life like in England?
A. It was far from easy. B. It had been destroyed by cities.
C. All farmers worked together. D. Villagers suffered from various diseases.
9. What led to the filming of the England story TV series?
A. Post-war social changes. B. Hoskins’ idea about one village.
C. The growth of small farms. D. The success of Blythe’s Akenfield.
10. Why do villages still matter today?
A. They contribute to population growth.
B. They have become a key source of income.
C. They keep important ancient Roman buildings.
D. They provide a sense of belonging and togetherness.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Great Shift from Rural to Urban B. Why Villages Are Dying Out
C. A Window into England: The Village D. The History of European Villages
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段中“Life was hard, even when the country did not suffer from deadly diseases and hunger. (生活很艰难,即使在国家没有遭受致命疾病和饥饿的时候。)”可知,早期英格兰的乡村生活远非容易。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But the great English historian W. G. Hoskins suggested that the whole history of the country could be told through one village. Inspired by his view, Michael Wood filmed the TV series Michael Wood’s Story of England in the village of Kibworth. (但伟大的英国历史学家W. G. Hoskins认为,整个国家的历史可以通过一个村庄来讲述。受到这一观点的启发,Michael Wood在基布沃思村拍摄了电视系列剧《Michael Wood的英格兰故事》。)”可知,Hoskins关于一个村庄的想法促成了这部片子的拍摄。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Despite these changes, the village still stands for the idea of community, a word more and more in use now as we search for our commonality (共性). It is a place of 500 or 1,000 people, where everyone knows each other and each other’s business, but always helps out in an emergency; a place where one can still feel connected and hold that dream of a harmonious vision of society. (尽管经历了这些变化,这个村庄依然代表着社区的理念——一个如今在我们寻找共同点时越来越被使用的词语。这里住着五百到一千人,每个人彼此相识,了解彼此的事务,但在紧急时刻总能互相帮助;这是一个人们仍能感受到彼此联系的地方,也是怀揣着社会和谐愿景的梦想之地。)”可推知,村庄在今天依然重要的原因是它能给人们提供一种归属感和团结感。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“But the great English historian W. G. Hoskins suggested that the whole history of the country could be told through one village. Inspired by his view, Michael Wood filmed the TV series Michael Wood’s Story of England in the village of Kibworth. (但伟大的英国历史学家W. G. Hoskins认为,整个国家的历史可以通过一个村庄来讲述。)”可知,文章回顾了英国乡村的历史变迁,并在第二段和第五段反复强调了一个核心观点:整个英国的历史可以通过一个村庄来讲述,文章的主旨是将村庄作为了解英格兰的一扇窗户,所以“了解英格兰的窗口:村庄”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。

On November 4, 2025, the astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station spotted cracks on their return capsule’s (太空舱) viewport window. Guessing that they were caused by tiny pieces of space debris (残骸), the ground team soon carried out analyses and experiments, and finally decided that they posed safety risks and pushed the return back. On November 14, the crew safely landed on Earth aboard the Shenzhou XXI spacecraft, completing an extra-long 204-day mission.
Space debris, also known as orbital debris, includes non-functioning satellites, out-of-service rockets, and broken pieces from collisions (碰撞) or explosions, which pose severe risks because even small pieces, when moving at orbital speeds, carry enough energy to disable a spacecraft or destroy a satellite. The problem has worsened in recent years due to the rise of large satellites. Each new satellite increases the chance of collisions, leading to the generation of more debris — an effect known as the Kessler Syndrome, first suggested by NASA scientist Donald Kessler in 1978.
The Tiangong incident is not an uncommon case. In 2021, a piece of debris from a 2007 anti-satellite test narrowly missed the International Space Station, forcing its crew to take shelter in their docked spacecraft. “We’re entering a phase where space operations are becoming increasingly risky,” says Holger Krag, head of the European Space Agency’s Space Safety Programme.
Several solutions have been put forward to tackle the debris problem. These include active debris removal missions, which use robots or nets to collect and deorbit junk; designing satellites to be more easily deorbited at the end of their missions; and carrying out stricter international regulations on space activities. However, these measures face significant technical, financial, and political challenges.
The Tiangong astronauts returned safely to Earth, but their experience serves as a wake-up call. As more countries and private companies venture into space, the need for a comprehensive, global approach to space debris management has never been more urgent (迫切的). Without action, the very orbits that enable modern life — from GPS navigation to weather forecasting — could become too dangerous to use.
12. Why was the return delayed?
A. The craft ran out of fuel. B. Mission time was increased.
C. Landing site was changed. D. Window cracks caused dangers.
13. What can lead to Kessler Syndrome according to the passage?
A. Frequent space collisions. B. Unexpected star movements.
C. Slow speed of space junk. D. Old satellites falling to Earth.
14. What does the underlined word “tackle” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Create. B. Solve. C. Ignore. D. Discover.
15. How does the author feel about the space debris?
A. Quite positive. B. Deeply concerned.
C. Doubtful of its risks. D. Excited about challenges.
D 13. A 14. B 15. B

根据第一段中“On November 4, 2025, the astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station spotted cracks on their return capsule’s (太空舱) viewport window. Guessing that they were caused by tiny pieces of space debris (残骸), the ground team soon carried out analyses and experiments, and finally decided that they posed safety risks and pushed the return back. (2025年11月4日,天宫空间站上的宇航员在返回舱的舷窗上发现了裂纹。地面团队推测这些裂纹是由微小的太空碎片造成的,随即展开分析和实验,最终认定存在安全隐患,决定推迟返回任务)”可知,窗户上的裂缝带来了危险,导致了返回的推迟。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Each new satellite increases the chance of collisions, leading to the generation of more debris — an effect known as the Kessler Syndrome (每颗新卫星都会增加碰撞的可能性,从而产生更多的碎片——这种现象被称为凯斯勒综合征)”可知,频繁的太空碰撞会导致凯斯勒综合征的发生。
根据画线词的上文“Several solutions have been put forward (已经提出了几种解决方案)”和下文“These include active debris removal missions, which use robots or nets to collect and deorbit junk; designing satellites to be more easily deorbited at the end of their missions; and carrying out stricter international regulations on space activities(这些举措包括:主动碎片清除任务 —— 利用机器人或网具收集太空垃圾并使其脱离轨道;设计在任务结束后更易于脱离轨道的卫星;以及针对太空活动执行更为严格的国际法规)”等具体应对措施可知,这些方案都是为了“解决”碎片问题,tackle意为“处理,解决”,与Solve意思相近。
根据最后一段中“As more countries and private companies venture into space, the need for a comprehensive, global approach to space debris management has never been more urgent (迫切的). Without action, the very orbits that enable modern life — from GPS navigation to weather forecasting — could become too dangerous to use.

Money has become the most important necessity of people. (每个人都希望拥有经济保障。金钱已成为人们最重要的必需品。)”指出金钱的重要性,下文“However, right attitude and behavior of yours will bring respect, dignity (尊严) and peace to you which you can never buy with your money. (然而,你正确的态度和行为将为你带来尊重、尊严与内心的平静,这些是金钱永远无法买到的。)”包含转折,引出金钱无法买到的东西,空处应肯定金钱的作用,与下文形成对比。因此D项“Money surely brings you power, ease and satisfaction. (金钱确实能带给你权力、轻松和满足。)”符合语境,先承认金钱的用处,再转折强调其局限性。
【17题详解】
下文“If you feel that just because of money you have the permission to disrespect anyone, then this attitude will for sure not keep you at the top for a long time. Therefore, respect others and stay humble (谦逊的) and polite with others. (如果你觉得仅仅因为有钱就拥有不尊重他人的权利,那么这种态度肯定不会让你长久保持高位。因此,请尊重他人,待人谦逊有礼。)”围绕尊重展开,讨论若因有钱而傲慢,则无法获得尊重,建议保持谦逊,空处作为该段的标题,应概括“金钱买不到尊重”,且需和其他段落标题一样使用以Money开头的陈述句。因此A项“Money can never buy respect. (金钱永远买不到尊重。)”符合语境,对应下文内容。
【18题详解】
上文“Money will never bring genuine (真诚的) people towards you. (金钱永远不会给你带来真诚的人。)”指出金钱无法换取真诚,空处需进一步解释原因。因此E项“These people never make friends by looking at your pocket size. (这些人不会通过看你的钱包大小来交朋友。)”符合语境,承接上文,其中的“these people”指代上文的“genuine people”。
上文“No matter how rich you are, you will get the same 24 hours as others. You have to manage everything in those twenty-four hours, and you will not be rewarded by any extra hours. (无论你多么富有,你得到的24小时都和其他人一样。你必须在这24小时内管理好所有的事情,而且你不会得到任何额外的时间奖励。)”强调金钱买不到额外的时间,建议充分利用时间,空处作为结尾,应重申这一观点。因此F项“25 hours a day can never happen to you just because of being rich. (一天25小时不会因为你富有而实现。)”符合语境,否定因财富而获得额外时间的可能性,承接上文。
【20题详解】
本段对应的标题是“Money can’t buy life. (金钱买不到生命。)”,下文“Death is obvious, which will come for sure. You will face health issues without having a proper diet and exercise. (死亡是显而易见的,迟早会发生。如果你没有保持良好的饮食和锻炼习惯,就会面临健康问题。)”指出死亡不可避免,忽视饮食和锻炼会失去健康,空处需引出对死亡和健康的讨论。因此B项“You can never buy good health and life.

hard“困难的”是描述主语the old Chinatown性质的形容词,应用“be+形容词+to do”句型,不定式主动形式to recognize或to recognise表示被动含义,作主语补足语。

Pulling into the parking lot at Albertson’s Grocery Store, I went over the shopping list in my head. We had friends coming for dinner. I still had some cleaning to do, and I needed time to shower and dress. “Come on, guys,” I said to the kids as I turned off the engine. “Let’s see how fast we can do this.” I hurriedly got out of the car.
We were halfway there when Daniel, my four-year-old, dropped my hand and walked over to the cart (手推车) return area. He stopped, looking at something by his feet. I told Daniel to leave it, whatever it is. He reached down and picked up his prize, a crumpled (皱巴巴的) square of greenish paper. I took a quick look at it. A dollar bill. “I’ll take care of it till we’re home,” I put it into my pocket.
“Whose is it?” Daniel asked. “Won’t the people who lost it be sad?”
“No one will miss it. Trust me.”
We quickly did the shopping and left the store. As we passed the place where Daniel had found his dollar, he slowed down. “Mom, maybe someone really needs that money,” Daniel said.
“Look, it’s only a dollar,” I said impatiently, fishing the crumpled bill out of my pocket and unfolding (展开) it. I did a double take. “Daniel,” I said, “you found a hundred-dollar bill!” Daniel stopped and looked up at me. “Let’s give it back.” “But how?” I asked.
“We wait here, and they come get it,” Daniel said in a soft voice. “We don’t have much time to stand here waiting,” I said, though I hated to think of someone losing so much. But then Daniel said quietly, “Mom, you never have time when it’s important.”
I took a deep breath and said, “Okay, we’ll wait ten minutes.”

We put the things in the car and sat inside. The ten minutes felt like an hour. Max and Andrea grew a little anxious, but Daniel kept his eyes fixed on the cart return area, never moving his gaze. Just as I was about to suggest leaving, a couple hurried over, looking anxious and checking the ground carefully. The woman was wiping her eyes, and the man was muttering, “I must have dropped it here… it’s for our kid’s medicine.” Daniel pulled my arm and whispered, “Mom, that’s them.”
“Wait here a minute,” I said to the kids as I jumped out of the car and walked over to the couple. I held up the crumpled hundred-dollar bill and asked if they had lost it. The woman’s face lit up instantly, and she nodded eagerly. “Yes! That’s ours! We were so worried — our son is sick and we need it for his pills.” I handed her the bill, and the couple thanked me repeatedly. When I got back to the car, Daniel smiled proudly. I hugged him tightly, realizing my little boy had taught me a precious lesson about kindness and what truly matters.
