Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey aged 15 feel uncomfortable. After 7 pm, David leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet for more than 2 hours instead, waiting until the last minute. Do you have the same experience?
Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination (拖延症) is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations,” Professor Peter Stone says.
Professor Stone did a study in 2022, asking procrastinators to finish a task before bedtime at night. The results showed that they did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. However, they thought they did better. Even, the procrastination led to sleeplessness, which caused many other health problems for them.
For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving.
Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might turn the lights down at 10 pm. When the lights are dim (昏暗), you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.

A. By asking some questions.

When Wang Hong stepped onto the podium (领奖台) at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia on July 23, 2026, the world took notice. At 35, she had just become the third woman in history—and the first Chinese citizen—to receive the Fields Medal, often regarded as the “Nobel Prize” of mathematics.
Wang was born in 1991 in a rural village in Guilin, Guangxi. Her parents were both secondary school teachers, and her father taught mathematics. At age five, she had already taught herself the first-grade curriculum (课程) and skipped directly to second grade. She later skipped sixth grade as well and entered Peking University at just 16.
However, her path to mathematics was not straightforward. That year, Peking University’s mathematics department accepted only one student from Guangxi, and Wang’s score fell short. She was admitted to the School of Earth and Space Sciences instead. But Wang never gave up her dream. From her very first day at university, she started preparing to transfer to the mathematics department. She spent her freshman year auditing advanced algebra (代数), geometry (几何) and analysis, and successfully made the transfer.
After completing her undergraduate studies at Peking University in 2011, Wang continued her education in France, earning a master’s degree from Paris-Sud University. She then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, where she received her PhD in 2019. Today, she is a permanent professor at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France and also a professor at New York University.
Wang is known for her research in Fourier analysis (傅里叶分析) and geometric measure theory (几何测度论). Her most famous achievement came in February 2025, when she and her collaborator (合作者) Joshua Zahl published a 127-page proof of the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture (挂谷猜想)—a geometric problem that had puzzled mathematicians for over a century. The proof earned her the 2026 Fields Medal.
Beyond mathematics, Wang enjoys drawing and often sketches while thinking through a problem, saying the drawings help her visualize its structure. She also loves anime, table tennis and fencing. When asked about her award, she offered no grand pronouncements: “I’m honored,” she said. “I hope everyone will have the courage to do what they love.”
21. What can we learn about Wang Hong’s early life from the passage?
A. She was born into a family of mathematicians
B. She skipped two grades before entering university
C. She was admitted to Peking University as a math major.
D. She showed little interest in mathematics as a child.
22. Why was Wang Hong initially unable to study mathematics at Peking University?
A. She did not perform well in the college entrance exam.
B. The mathematics department only took one student from her region.
C. She chose to study earth and space sciences instead.
D. Her parents advised her to study a different subject.
23. What does the underlined word “auditing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Teaching a course to other students.
B. Passing an exam with a high score.
C. Attending a class without receiving a grade.
D. Giving up a subject she was not interested in.
24. What can be inferred from the passage about the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture?
A. It was first raised by Wang Hong and her collaborator.
B. It is a problem in the field of earth and space sciences.
C. It remained unsolved for more than 100 years before Wang’s proof.
D. It was the only reason Wang Hong received the Fields Medal.
25. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the Kakeya conjecture in detail.
B. To introduce the life and achievements of Wang Hong.
C. To compare mathematics education in China and France.
D. To encourage young people to study earth sciences.
