One day, I was walking across campus when I spotted one of my students sitting on a bench, her face turned toward the sun, her eyes closed. I went over and asked if 1 could sit with her. When I asked how she was doing, she explained that her phone had “crashed”, and she was bored.
The moment reminded me how deeply we’re shaped by the digital world. Our devices, including computers, smartphones and the never-ending flow of online content, keep feeding us fresh updates, training us to expect continued stimulation. We’ve become trapped in a cycle of response, as if any pause were a problem to be solved.
My thoughts wandered back to my childhood—those afternoons spent staring out the window, doing nothing in particular. What felt like aimless boredom was actually a retooling period when my mind needed to reset before it could rediscover joy and invention. Before I knew it, I was building models, climbing trees, or playing instruments.
“What are your personal interests?” I asked my student. Her eyes lit up as she showed me her amazing artwork. “Have you ever felt bored while drawing?” I asked. “Never, ” she said, though ideas didn’t always come easily. “Does that annoy you?” “No,” she responded, “because I know that something will eventually pop into my head. When it does, it’s a real rush of satisfaction.”
That was it. That was exactly it. She needed to walk in the desert before arriving at the oasis (绿洲). She needed to experience a complete lack of inspiration before it struck her. This must have been what Ralph Waldo Emerson meant when he wrote, “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds...Improve them and they will become the brightest gems (宝石) in a useful life.”
As I left, I told her the truth:“I envy you”—not for her dead device, but for the creative space it had opened.
4. What is the author’s main concern over digital devices?
A. They cause unease during quiet pauses.
B. They require frequent software updates.
C. They often stop working without warning.
D. They may replace face-to-face interaction.
5. What role did boredom play in the author’s childhood?
A. It taught him to be patient. B. It gave him time to recharge.
C. It developed his rich imagination. D. It helped him avoid digital distraction.
6. What can we learn from the student’s response?
A. True artists never feel bored. B. Drawing requires special training.
C. Inspiration comes after waiting. D. Satisfaction begins when desire ends.
7. What advice is the author implying by saying“I envy you”?
A. Use phone less. B. Hold tight to youth.
C. Search for more treasure. D. Spare time for creativity.

Nature words like river, moss and blossom have appeared less frequently in books over the past years. This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.
The computer modelling in the study also predicts an “extinction of experience”, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an “orientation(倾向)” towards the natural world. This is consistent with findings from other studies, which identify adult nature connectedness as the strongest predictor of whether a child will become close to nature.
Richardson said that when he tested policy and urban environmental changes in the model he was surprised at the scale of the changes required to restore the connection to nature. Increasing biodiverse green spaces in a city by 30% might look like significant positive progress for wildlife and people but Richardson said his study suggests a city might need to be 10 times greener to turn around declines in nature connection.
Efforts to simply encourage adults to engage with nature are often insufficient for lasting change. More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.
Richardson said the scale of societal change required might not be as challenging as it appeared. A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. “Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,” he said. “The key is to make these gains last across generations,” he added.
8. What change has Richardson traced in his study?
A. Nature words have disappeared from books. B. People have less direct contact with nature.
C. Urbanisation has damaged wildlife habitats. D. Parents spend more time outdoors with kids.
9. What might cause future generations to have “extinction of experience” in the model?
A. They are raised away from nature. B. They can’t adapt to changes in nature.
C. High-rise buildings fill neighbourhoods. D. Schools offer few nature science lessons.
10. What is a most effective solution to the issue according to the text?
A. Advancing long-term policies. B. Launching eco-friendly campaigns.
C. Focusing on raising adults’ awareness. D. Enlarging green space in certain areas.
11. Richardson mentioned the study on people in Sheffield to show ________.
A. nature contact varies from city to city B. people’s living habits are hard to change
C. a new way to measure nature time is needed D. small efforts help improve contact with nature
D
The 21st century has created a whole range of new types of professionals that we have never had before — or if not quite new, at least newly repackaged. The world has always had influential people, for instance, but only now do we have “Influencer”. Similarly, the corporate world has certainly known its fair share of disruption, yet it is only in the last couple of decades that the “Disruptor” has become a recognisable figure in the way we talk about big business.
In an earlier era, the Disruptor would have been called an Innovator. Yet while an Innovator creates something new, the Disruptor is defined as much by what they destroy as by what they create. The Disruptor forces change; the clean-up is somebody else’s problem. It’s an attitude best summed up as “Move fast and break things.”
Back in 1929, G. K. Chesterton identified the core problem with moving fast and breaking things through a thought experiment. Imagine there is a fence along a road. Suppose it’s been there a long time, and was put there for some purpose. But that purpose is lost over time. To us, now, the fence seems to be nothing but an impediment. Why not remove it?
When faced with such a fence, Chesterton thinks the fact that we can’t see the point of the fence is why we should not tear it down. Some fences keep foxes out of henhouses, for instance. If you think you can do without the fence because you’ve never seen a fox, consider if the existence of the fence is precisely why you’ve never seen one.
Importantly, Chesterton is not saying that things can never be reformed. His is a preventive principle rather than an outright prohibition. We could rephrase it like this: understand the wisdom in past decisions before you reject them. If we’re too impetuous, we can end up tearing out things we don’t yet realise we rely upon. But uncritical devotion to the “way things are done” can also deny us the possibility of better days.
What is required, then, is not the fearlessness of the Disruptor, but the humility (谦卑) to stop and ask questions and to know that our own perspective is neither unique nor comprehensive. Disruption can be a force for good. It can also just leave a big mess. We need the ability to work out which messes are worth avoiding — because however impressively fast you move, some things can’t be easily unbroken.
12. Regarding Chesterton’s principle, the author is _____________.
A. supportive B. doubtful
C. conflicted D. disappointed
13. What does the word “impetuous” underlined in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Short-sighted. B. Narrow-minded.
C. Hot-headed. D. Old-fashioned.
14. What can we infer from this passage about the Disruptor?
A. They may clear up other people’s mess.
B. They are in favour of the preventive principle.
C. They preserve more traditions than they break.
D. They may create more problems than they solve.
15. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Humility should be a driving force for human progress.
B. Innovation should move forward the wheel of tradition.
C. Reform should draw from the wellspring of past wisdom.
D. Disruption should be given priority in social development.
Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much? Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate — but because you tried to explain yourself to someone who didn’t really want to understand? ____16____
Over-explaining happens often in our daily lives. This behavior originated in early survival strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of self-protection to prevent punishment or emotional fallout. ____17____ People who have ever undergone trauma tend to explain a lot to avoid conflict or rejection.
Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no, or to make choices others might not like. ____18____ Clear language like “I’ve made my decision,” and “Let’s shift the conversation,” can actually do the trick. These direct statements prioritize emotional honesty without over-disclosure. And they don’t leave space for negotiation where none is guaranteed.
____19____ You spend less of it in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others’ discomfort. You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect. ____20____ You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. The version of you who felt unsafe being misunderstood learns a new truth: Your worth was never conditional or dependent on being agreeable or persuasive.
A. If so, you are not alone.
B. But maybe the biggest shift is internal.
C. Like any behavioral change, this takes practice.
D. But it’s not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble.
E. When you stop over-explaining, you reclaim emotional energy.
F. Have you ever explained to show your politeness and consideration?
G. Over-explaining can also come from the way our brain is wired by past experiences.

Lily was known among her friends as someone who would never settle for “good enough.” Whether she was arranging her bookshelf by color and height, or rewriting her notes until every letter was perfect, she believed that anything worth doing was worth doing perfectly. Her younger brother Jake often called her “the human perfection machine”.
One Saturday, their parents announced a family outing to a nearby lake. Lily packed her bag with sketchbooks (写生本), paints, and a set of brushes, imagining the perfect landscape she would create — the kind of painting that would look like a photograph. When they arrived, Lily found a flat rock by the water, set up her materials, and began sketching the scene before her.
She measured the hills against the sky, adjusted the angle of each tree branch, and mixed the paints on her palette (调色盘) like a scientist doing an experiment. She leaned in close, her brush hanging in the air for a long time before it touched the paper. Every stroke was carefully planned. She frowned as she focused and hardly noticed the laughter around her. Some children were playing nearby, and some others were chatting on the grass, but Lily didn’t look up. The world around her had shrunk to the size of her sketchbook.
While Lily was capturing every detail, her younger brother Jake had been walking along the shoreline since early afternoon, getting bored with the quiet scenery. He kicked at stones, threw sticks into the water, and sang loudly, hoping for something fun to happen. Each time Lily glanced up, she found Jake making faces or pretending to fish with a long branch. She waved him away, but he only moved a few steps off before coming back. “Jake, just leave me alone!” she said, yet the boy stayed nearby, his constant movement a quiet contrast to her deep focus.

A 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第二段“Our devices, including computers, smartphones and the never-ending flow of online content, keep feeding us fresh updates, training us to expect continued stimulation. We’ve become trapped in a cycle of response, as if any pause were a problem to be solved. (我们的设备不断推送新内容,训练我们持续寻求刺激;我们陷入了“一停就要回应”的循环,好像任何停顿都是必须解决的问题)”可知,作者担忧的是数字设备让人在安静时感到不安。故选A项。
根据第三段“My thoughts wandered back to my childhood—those afternoons spent staring out the window, doing nothing in particular. What felt like aimless boredom was actually a retooling period when my mind needed to reset before it could rediscover joy and invention.(我回想起自己的童年——那些下午,我凝视着窗外,没做什么特别的事。那种看似漫无目的的无聊,实际上是一段重新调整的时期,那时我的大脑需要重置,之后才能重新发现快乐与创造力)”可知,童年那段无所事事的空白,实质上是大脑重启,给作者“充电”时间。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段学生说的“I know that something will eventually pop into my head. When it does, it’s a real rush of satisfaction.(我知道灵感终究会出现;当它到来时,会带来真正的满足感)”可知,灵感会在耐心等待之后降临。
根据第六段作者道别时所说“As I left, I told her the truth:‘I envy you’—not for her dead device, but for the creative space it had opened. (当我离开时,我向她坦诚:‘我羡慕你’——不是羡慕她那坏掉的手机,而是羡慕它打开的那片创意空间)”可知,作者明确说明“羡慕的不是学生故障的手机,而是手机故障带来的创作空间,可见其隐含建议是“为创造力留出时间。故选D项。
C
B 9. A 10. A 11. D
根据文章第一段内容“This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.(据德比大学的Miles Richardson教授的一项研究显示,这种下降趋势反映了他所追踪到的更为广泛的变革:220年来的城市化记录、社区内野生动物的减少,以及父母不再将与自然的接触方式传递给子女的现象。)”
根据文章第二段内容“The computer modelling in the study also predicts an ‘extinction of experience’, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an ‘orientation’ towards the natural world.(该研究中的计算机模型还预测会出现“体验灭绝”现象,未来的世代将会逐渐失去对自然界的认知,因为自然环境已不再存在于日益密集的居民区之中,而父母们也不再向孩子们传递对自然世界的“认知导向”。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第四段内容“More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.(更为有效的是那些能在孩子幼年时期就建立与自然联系的措施,比如为幼儿设立的森林学校。研究表明,政府针对早期教育和城市规划的改革举措必须在未来 25 年内持续推行。一旦这种联系得以确立,它就能实现自我维持。)”可知,更有效的方式是从小培养亲近自然的连接,政府调整早期教育和城市设计的举措,必须在未来25年持续推行,即长期政策才是有效的解决方案。故选A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. ‘Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,’ he said.(一项针对谢菲尔德市民的研究发现,他们平均每天在自然环境中停留的时间仅为4分36秒。“将这个时间增加 10 倍,人们每天就能在户外度过 40 分钟 —— 这或许已经足够了。”)”提及谢菲尔德市民每天只在自然环境中停留4分36秒,而只需增加十倍到四十分钟就够了,即,不用巨大改变,小努力就能提升亲近自然的时间。故选D项。
A 13. C 14. D 15. C
根据第五段“Importantly, Chesterton is not saying that things can never be reformed. His is a preventive principle rather than an outright prohibition.(重要的是,Chesterton并不是说事物永远不能改革。他提出的是一种预防性原则,而非彻底禁止变革。)”以及第六段“What is required, then, is not the fearlessness of the Disruptor, but the humility (谦卑) to stop and ask questions and to know that our own perspective is neither unique nor comprehensive.(因此,我们需要的不是颠覆者的无所畏惧,而是停下来思考发问的谦卑之心,明白我们自身的看法既非独一无二,也并非面面俱到。)”
根据第五段“If we’re too impetuous, we can end up tearing out things we don’t yet realise we rely upon.(如果我们太过impetuous,最终可能毁掉那些我们尚且没有意识到、却十分依赖的事物。)”
根据第二段“The Disruptor forces change; the clean-up is somebody else’s problem.(颠覆者强行推动变革,收拾残局却是别人的事。)”以及第六段“Disruption can be a force for good. It can also just leave a big mess.(颠覆或许能产生积极作用,但也可能只留下一堆烂摊子。)”
根据第五段“We could rephrase it like this: understand the wisdom in past decisions before you reject them.(我们可以这样概括:在否定过往决策之前,先领会其中蕴含的智慧。)”
A 17. G 18. D 19. E 20. B
根据前文“Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much? Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate — but because you tried to explain yourself to someone who didn’t really want to understand? (你是否曾在一场对话后离开时,带着一种自己说得太多的不安感?不是因为你无礼或考虑不周——而是因为你试图向一个根本不想理解你的人解释自己?)”引出“过度解释”的话题,可知,此空需回应这种经历是否普遍。A选项“If so, you are not alone. (如果是这样,你并不孤单。)”中“if so”直接承接前文的设问场景,又自然过渡到下文“Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. (过度解释在日常生活中很常见。)”的论述,符合语境。故选A项。
根据前文“Over-explaining happens often in our daily lives. This behavior originated in early survival strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of self-protection to prevent punishment or emotional fallout. (过度解释在日常生活中很常见。这种行为源于早期的生存策略。对于在情绪不稳定的家庭中长大的人来说,清晰的解释可能是一种自我保护方式,以防止惩罚或情绪波动。)”可知,前文已提及过度解释的一个起源(早期生存策略与家庭环境),此空需补充其他起源。G选项“Over-explaining can also come from the way our brain is wired by past experiences. (过度解释也可能源于过去经历塑造的我们的大脑思维模式。)”中“also”体现递进关系,补充了“过往经历”这一起源,符合语境。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no, or to make choices others might not like. (无论起源如何,这种模式都是相同的:我们花费不必要的精力,试图证明自己有权利占据空间、说“不”或做出别人可能不喜欢的选择。)”可知,前文指出了过度解释的问题与负面影响,此空需转折并引出解决方法。D选项“But it’s not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble. (但要摆脱这个困扰并非不可能。)”中“but”形成转折,打破前文“过度解释带来困扰”的负面氛围,“not impossible”传递出“可改变”的积极信号,自然引出后文“Clear language like “I’ve made my decision,” and “Let’s shift the conversation,” can actually do the trick. (像‘我已经做了决定’和‘我们换个话题吧’这样简洁的表达其实能解决问题。)”的具体方法,符合语境。故选D项。
【19题详解】
根据后文“You spend less of it in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others’ discomfort. (你会少花精力去练习、辩解或恢复,也不必总是对别人的不适做出反应。)”可知,后文描述的是“停止过度解释”后节省精力的好处,此空需总领该内容。E选项“When you stop over-explaining, you reclaim emotional energy. (当你停止过度解释时,你会重新获得情感能量。)”中“reclaim emotional energy”直接概括了后文“少花精力在辩解、恢复”的核心好处,符合语境。故选E项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect. (你还会开始吸引一种不同类型的关系。这种关系不基于表现或顺从,而是基于相互尊重。)”及后文“You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. (你开始疗愈内心那个认为“爱需要通过解释来争取”的部分。)”可知,前文阐述的是停止过度解释带来的“外在关系”变化,后文说明内在变化,故此空需转折并深入到“内在”层面。B选项“But maybe the biggest shift is internal. (但或许最大的改变在于内在。)”符合语境,引起下文。故选B项。

Now, the results of ____36____ massive three-year scientific survey have revealed that the mountain range is home to nearly a quarter of the ____37____ (province) plant species. The survey, ____38____ (release) on Friday at a news conference, is the most systematic study of the 1,000-square-kilometer range in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture since joint international expeditions in the 1980s.
confirm...as...

Dear freshmen, welcome to high school!
If you want to enrich your high‑school life, I strongly recommend three clubs for Grade 10 students, whose order is Volunteer Association, Art Club and Debate Club.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para. 1: Suddenly, something unexpected happened.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 2: Hearing their words, Lily felt something inside her loosen.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1: Suddenly, something unexpected happened. A strong wind blew across the lake, and Jake, who was running after a butterfly, knocked over Lily’s paint box by accident. The red and blue paints spilled across her carefully drawn picture, ruining the perfect scene that she had spent hours creating. Lily stared in shock, and tears came to her eyes. The nearby children ran over at once. One boy said that the mixed colors looked like a beautiful sunset, and a girl added that the painting had become more lively than before.
Para. 2: Hearing their words, Lily felt something inside her loosen. She looked at the painting again and realized that what the children said was true. The messy colors had created a warm and lively picture, which was even more touching than her earlier perfect plan. She smiled at Jake and thanked him for the “happy accident.” Then she put down her brush and joined the children who were playing games on the grass. That afternoon, Lily learned that beauty did not always lie in perfection; sometimes, the most wonderful moments came from the little surprises that life gave you.
①打翻:knock over/upset/tip over
②跑:run/rush
①震惊:shock/astonishment
②流泪:tears come to one’s eyes/eyes are filled with tears
