Have you ever thought that someone looks like their name? A new study suggests that a person’s name may influence how they look when they grow up.
In the study, researchers showed people photos of different faces and asked them to choose the most matching (相配的) names. People in the study could correctly match the names to the adult faces quite well. However, they found it much harder to match names to children’s faces. This suggests that as people grow older, their looks might slowly change to fit their name.
The researchers also used a computer program to compare faces. It found that adults with the same name look more similar to each other than adults with different names. But this was not true for children.
▲ The researchers think it might be because many people have the same ideas about names. For example, people might think someone named “Bob” should have a rounder and happier face. Without realizing it, a person named Bob might smile more often or choose a certain hairstyle, making his face look rounder and friendlier over time. This way, he slowly grows to look like his name.
The study shows that our names might play a small but interesting part in shaping who we are even in how we look.

I Appreciate Myself
Our school did a survey among 1,127 students on the topic of “I Appreciate Myself”. Here are the results. According to the survey, 92% of the students appreciate themselves for being honest, 78% for keeping promises, 65% for seeing the world with a smile, and 53% for having a dream and working hard.
As for me, I choose “seeing the world with a smile”. I used to complain when things went wrong. However, I realized that a smile can change my day. One day, I failed an exam and felt sad. Instead of complaining, I smiled and told myself, “It’s just a test. I can do better next time.” The attitude helped me calm down.
Since then, I have found that smiling at problems makes my life happier. I appreciate myself for seeing the world with a kind smile.

To make ends meet (勉强维持生计), Zang took any job she could find——washing dishes, cleaning floors, and so on. Though she had trouble communicating with the local people, she worked very hard. One day, when she made dumplings to thank her neighbours, they spoke highly of them (高度评价). Encouraged by their words, she decided to turn her best skill into a business: making dumplings to sell.
Every morning, Zang got up early to prepare dumpling fillings with fresh meat and vegetables. Then she carried a heavy pot of dumplings, selling them on the streets through rain or shine. Once, a heavy rain made all her dumplings wet, and some people laughed at her small cart (手推车), but she didn’t give up. She thought of her daughters. Every night, the family made dumplings together.
After years of serving dumplings on street corners, Zang’s efforts finally paid off (取得成功). Her dumpling business grew into a global (全世界的) company, but she never forgot where she started and the people who showed her kindness along the way.
