Sports in ancient China
People in ancient China worked long hours each day. To relax, they invented many games. Some of them had a long history.

Its rules were similar to football’s. Each team had 12 or 16 players. Instead of hands, only feet and head could be used. Players should hit the ball into the opposite (对方的) goal.
Archery (射箭)

A research team from China has invented a six-legged guide robot. “We believe our robot will work as a pair of eyes for blind people,” said Professor Gao Feng.
According to a study, there are around 17.31 million blind people in China. However, because of high training cost and long training periods, there are only over 400 guide dogs in service, which means only one guide dog is available for every 40,000 blind people in China.
As a strong backup for the real guide dog, the guide robot can understand the orders of blind people and reply in less than one second (秒). It can also see and tell traffic lights. Another task of our robot is to talk with blind people and serve as a home companion (陪伴者). Besides, it can walk smoothly on different kinds of terrain (地形) and guide the blind both indoors and outdoors with no need of the Internet. So it is easy and convenient for the blind to use the robot. The guide robot is a fast walker. It is able to walk at the highest speed of three meters every second.
The guide robot is now being tested and Gao believes that it will soon be ready for the market!
根据文章内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
36. A six-legged guide robot was invented to help the blind.
37. The second paragraph (段落) means our country is short of guide dogs.
38. Without the help of the Internet, the guide robot can’t work.

①A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
②As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
③As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
④Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?
· If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
· If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.
· If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
⑤Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
根据语言材料内容选择最佳答案。
41. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The situation. B. The crime scene. C. A new and difficult word.
42. If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”?
A. They each pay half. B. Jim pays every time. C. They take turns paying.
43. How does the author explain his ideas about root words?
A. By giving a fact. B. By taking an example. C. By telling a story.
44. “Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root?
A. My brother is my senior by two years.
B. He was ill so he was absent from school.
C. A criminal was sentenced to death by law.
45. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
(①=paragraph 1 ②= paragraph 2, ...)
A. B. C.

Molly is my best friend. She is an Asian girl who seldom breaks rules at school. She is never absent from classes and works harder than anyone I know. Her teachers and parents take pride in her excellent examination scores and her achievements.
Now, she faces a big challenge. Next month, our city will hold an important English speech contest, and her classmates want her to represent (代表) their class. Everyone believes she won’t fail—after all, she always gets top marks in English. But Molly is extremely shy. She doesn’t want to let her classmates down, but she’s really afraid of speaking in public.
I know Molly doesn’t dare to speak in front of large crowds. She keeps her fears private and silent, never sharing them with others. Maybe she could start small—practicing her speech with close friends first. If she adds a humorous story, it might help her relax. From time to time, I remind her that even great speakers feel nervous. Her shyness is something she must deal with, but she doesn’t have to do it alone. Maybe she could pretend the audience (观众) is just a ton of friendly ants instead of judging strangers! If she practices in person and prepares well, she’ll get confidence. What else can I do to help? Should I interview her like a reporter to make practice fun? Or maybe find a British or European friend who has overcome similar fears? Any helpful suggestions would be required and appreciated!
Most of all, I hope Molly steps onto that stage, takes a deep breath, and gives her speech exactly as planned.

My Favorite Chinese Festival
There are many traditional festivals in China. My favorite one is the Spring Festival, which usually comes in January or February.
Before the festival, people clean their houses. On New Year’s Eve, it is a time when families get together. We often eat dumplings because they mean good luck. Children are happy to get lucky money from elders. At night, we watch TV and set off fireworks.
I like this festival best because it shows the love and hope for the future. It makes me feel warm and happy. I hope everyone can enjoy this wonderful time.
