Wang Xianzhi was a great master of calligraphy, just like his father, Wang Xizhi. At the age of five, he was already able to recite a lot of poems fluently. Many people wondered, “(1)What will this boy do when he grows up? We really don’t know.” When he was about seven, Wang Xianzhi studied painting and handwriting under his father. One day, Wang Xizhi tried to take the brush out of his seven-year-old son’s hand. Surprisingly, the son was holding the brush so tightly that the father was unable to take it away. “(2)You will certainly be a calligraphy master in the future!” the father said. (3)He was really pleased because the boy was good at calligraphy.
Wang Xianzhi continued to study hard until he was finally as good as his father.
When Wang Xianzhi was older, a friend once asked him to write something on a fan. He accidentally dropped the brush on the fan and left an ink stain on it. “(4)I dropped the brush. I’m so sorry!” said Wang Xianzhi. “Let me see what else I can do about it.” He then turned the stain into a beautiful painting of a cow.
Surprised, his friend said, “It is so lifelike! (5)You dropped the brush on my fan, but it made me really happy!”
