Benjamin Franklin was an American scientist and inventor in the 18th century. He was always very curious about the world, and this often helped him solve different problems. Back in those days, lightning often hit buildings during thunderstorms. There were many terrible fires, and the worst fires could burn whole towns to the ground.
Franklin wanted to prevent such things. He believed that lightning was actually electricity, so he decided to fly a kite during a thunderstorm to see if he was right. He made a silk kite with a metal wire on top. Then he attached a hemp string to the bottom part of the kite. When the hemp string got wet, it could conduct electricity. Franklin also attached a metal key and a silk string to the hemp string.
One day in June 1752, a thunderstorm was coming in, so Franklin and his son went out with the kite. They flew it high in the sky. Then they walked inside a farm building. However, they left the door open so the kite could continue flying. That way, they kept the silk string dry. This was very important — they didn't want to get hit by lightning.
Franklin was pulling on the string anxiously when lightning flashed near the kite. He put his hand close to the key and felt an electric shock.
“I've been shocked! Success! Success!” He shouted to his son.
Franklin's experiment was very dangerous. No one should ever try it today. In fact, Franklin was lucky that the kite wasn't hit by lightning. It would have killed him. However, it did lead to one of Franklin's inventions — the lightning rod. In Franklin's day, lightning rods saved buildings from being destroyed by fire. They continue to protect buildings today.
Franklin believed lightning was electricity and decided to do a kite experiment.
He made a silk kite with a metal wire on top. He also used a wet hemp string, a metal key and a dry silk string.
In 1752, he flew the kite with his son on a thunderstorm day. They stayed indoors to keep the silk string dry for safety.
Lightning sent electricity to the key, and Franklin felt a shock.
He proved lightning was electricity and invented lightning rods to guard buildings.

Your ideas
How did Benjamin Franklin come up with such a brilliant idea?
4. Discuss the question below.
In the past, lightning often struck buildings and started big fires. Franklin wanted to solve this problem. He had a guess that lightning was electricity. To test this idea, he carried out the famous kite experiment in a thunderstorm. The experiment proved his guess right. From this discovery, he came up with the idea of inventing lightning rods to protect buildings.

Why do we need new ideas?
Think
Talking about a new idea
Can you come up with ideas for solving the problems below? Discuss in pairs. You can discuss other problems too. Read the dialogue below and pay attention to the expressions in blue.
Problems
cats scratching sofas noise pollution in cities
traffic jams water wasted in daily life
1.Solution to traffic jams
2.Solution to noise pollution in cities
(1)分析原因:loud noises from factories and building sites
(2 )提出方案:make rules to control noises
3.Solution to water wasted in daily life
(1)分析原因:do not turn off taps in time
(2 )提出方案:make a smart tap with a sensor (传感器)
S1: What problem do you want to solve?
S2: Well, cats always scratch sofas, but I just had an idea
about how to fix it.
S1: Really? What's your idea?
S2: It's really simple! Cats like to scratch things at home.
But most of them don't like strong smells, such as the
smell of oranges, so I made a spray with a strong
orange smell. When I spray it on the sofa,
the cats will stay away from it.
S1: That's amazing!
Life is full of surprises. When something surprising happens, we can use these expressions to show surprise:
·Really? ·What a surprise!
·Oh dear! ·Isn't it amazing?
