Passage 1
An exhibition at the Jiushi Art Museum in Shanghai is featuring artwork inspired by Go, or weiqi in Chinese, 56. originated in China more than 4,000 years ago.
56.答案:which
Go is one of 57. earliest binary-based (基于二元的) games. The movements of the black and white pieces reflect the basic ideas of Eastern philosophy, according to Tu Ningning, who is in charge of the exhibition.
57.答案:the
“The exhibition brings together Go culture, cutting-edge technology and contemporary art,” says Tu.“We hope 58.________
(present) the rather abstract Go game and AI in a visual context, and initiate dialogues with minimalist art, conceptual art and expressionism.”
58.答案:to present
本空考查“hope to do sth.”
“In a Go game, each move should serve a long-term goal. You try to lead the opponent into your trap and force them to follow your
‘59. (guide)’ till they lose,” explains Wang Wei, a Go player among the visitors to the exhibition.
“The players’ personalities 60. (reveal) during the game, and one’s weaknesses are exposed to the opponent,” she adds. “A decent winner always 61. (try) to beat the opponent
62. no more than one or two points as a gesture (姿态) of respect for the other side.”
60.答案:are revealed
故填are revealed。
62.答案:by
Tu says that the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the 63. (strategy) placement of the pieces,
64. the energy flow following each move inspired artists to create oil paintings, sculptures, 65. (digital) generated pictures and silk-screen prints for the exhibition.
64.答案:and
分析句子结构可知,空处和 the balance between the black and white pieces及the beauty in the 63.__________
(strategy) placement of the pieces是并列的关系,故用and连接。

The Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown.
First announced in April 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5 g of sugar per 100 ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity (肥胖). It is believed that today’s children and teenagers are consuming three times the recommended level of sugar, putting them at a higher risk of the disease.
Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £520m a year for the Treasury. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports.
It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers (制造商) so they can avoid paying the tax.Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers’ efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures.Since April drinks companies have been forced to pay between 18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or import, depending on the sugar content.
However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year.
Today’s figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities (设施) and healthier eating in schools.Helping the next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great importance, and the industry is playing its part.

As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy.Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says.“We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.

(2022·新高考Ⅰ卷)It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened.“I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably.“I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. With his head lowered and eyes fixed on his feet, he sat quietly in a dilemma. Knowing what his worries were, I whispered, trying to break the silence, “I saw you had practised so hard for the race and I bet you can do it!” “Can I?” The little boy raised his head, with disbelief in his eyes. Patting him tenderly on the shoulder, I replied firmly,“Of course!” Hearing my encouragement, he staggered to his feet, walking towards the field. His small body swaying from side to side, was full of determination and courage.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The moment the starting gun was fired, all the runners shot forwards like an arrow. It didn’t take long before David fell behind. Tough as it was, he spared no effort to catch up with the others, showing great perseverance. Along the way, the staggering figure was greeted with thunderous cheers and applause from the audience. Hardly had he crossed the finish line when I rushed to wrap him in my arms,“Good boy! You made it!”“Yes, I did!” he choked, with his big toothy smile spreading across his face again.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. He buried his head in his hands, sobbing.“Do you fear others will tease you?” I asked. He nodded and bit his lip, tears welling up in his eyes. I hugged him firmly, patting his back gently.“I have faith in you and you will not be looked down upon. Instead, everyone will cheer you up when you are running!” David was inspired instantly and agreed to run. Seeing the determination in his eyes, I wiped the tears on his cheeks, promising to keep him company until the end of the competition.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The signal gun going off,David dashed forward with the other children. But he had only gone a few metres before he tripped over and fell down on the ground. My heart sank.“Come on! You can do it!” the audience cheered him up, David struggled to his feet and proceeded. As David crossed the finishing line, a wave of thunderous applause burst out. I ran towards David and gave him a big hug.“You made it!” His eyes twinkled with delight, saying,“Thank you, it was you who made me realize just be myself, and I can be the master of my own destiny.”
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. With head down and shoulders trembling slightly, he was trying hard to hide his disappointment. Gently putting my arms around him, I asked with care,“You still want to try, don’t you?” He nodded, tears starting to roll down and wetting my shirt. A while later when he finally calmed down, I told him how I appreciated his determination confronted with challenges.“Everyone believes in you, and your efforts in practice won’t let you down, either.” Grinning his usual big toothy smile, David regained confidence and agreed to have a try.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. At that very moment, David’s small figure seemed tall and impressive in my eyes. The cross-country run was not easy for him, though, especially with so many ambitious runners competing. His unique way of rocking from side to side made him striking among the runners, yet nobody laughed at him. Instead, along the way, other kids passing by cast a smile and thumbed up at him. As expected, David finished his run as usual long after others, but he earned respect with every step of determination and proved he was as regular as everyone else.
