Passage 1 阅读理解(2025·全国一卷·C)
While safety improvements might have been made to our streets in recent years, transport studies also show declines in pedestrian (行人) mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there’s too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school, so they pack them into the car instead.
Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement:How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives, they call for a rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.
Life on city streets started to change decades ago.Whole neighbourhoods were destroyed to make way for new road networks and kids had to play elsewhere. Some communities fought back. Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the destruction of her local park, Washington Square. Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor (市长) to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.
Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.
We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. Do we really recognise what it costs us as a society when children can’t move safely around our communities? The authors of Movement have it right: it’s time to think differently about that street outside your front door.

D.Make expressways accessible.
答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor to champion ‘New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.’”可知,Jane Jacobs描述了当得知公园计划被高速公路取代时的恐慌,她呼吁市长将纽约建设成一个宜居的好地方,而不仅仅是一个人们匆匆而过的地方。故选 A。livable是a decent place to live的同义转换。

A.Why the Rush? B.What’s Next?
C.Where to Stay? D.Who to Blame?
答案:A
A项“Why the Rush?(我们为何要如此匆忙?)”直接点明了文章质疑的核心——这种追求速度、忽视生活质量的“匆忙”是否有必要?它是否值得付出如此高的社会代价?这个标题最能引发考生的批判性思考。

Passage 4 阅读理解(2020·天津卷·A改编)
How to Use a Modern Public Library
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Check out a book. While libraries still loan out (出借) books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats (载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions targeted to various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce (商会) and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.

Passage 1 阅读理解(2022·新高考Ⅰ卷·C)
The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said:“I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.”
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.”
“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said:“Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”

Passage 2 阅读理解(2022·全国乙卷·B)
In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise.Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted:The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top:“When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals:foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”

(2025·江苏南京模拟)In April last year, sitting in the back of the car, my two daughters, Nia, 10 and Robyn, 8, chatted away about the latest electronic devices.“Mum, can I get a new phone for my birthday?”Nia asked.“No, love,” I replied.“Can we go to a theme park this year?” Robyn asked.“That’s very expensive,” I said. Disappointment entered our car like a dark cloud, putting an end to the chat.
Arriving home, I switched on my laptop, went through pictures taken in Uganda (乌干达). A few months before, I’d been there, working with local schools. As an officer for Teams4u, a charity that provides resources to people in need, I’d seen what life was like there. I went there twice a year and loved it.“You must bring your family next time,” one of the local teachers had said to me. My girls had never been out to Africa with me before, but were always wide-eyed as I told my adventures.
Life in Uganda was very different from what we were used to. Children there had little to eat for lunch. There were no proper desks and chairs in the classroom. I’d been out there to help, but there was still a lot of work to do in some remote schools.
During dinner, Nia asked me,“Mum, can we dine out?” “Home-made food is boring,” Robyn complained. I didn’t say a word.
That night in bed, I thought about the invitation from the teacher in Uganda. By the following morning, I’d made my decision.“Girls, we’re going to Uganda! For two weeks!” I announced. Nia and Robyn were surprised at first but soon became excited! Uganda wasn’t a theme park, but it was an adventure anyway.
So, a few weeks later, in May last year, we landed in the capital city of Kampala. That night, we all slept under mosquito nets (蚊帐) in the blazing (燃烧的) heat—we were worlds away from home.

[参考范文1]
The next morning, we headed out to a remote school with resources. Coming into sight were the muddy paths, worn-out buildings and poor facilities. So shocked were Nia and Robyn that they couldn’t utter a word. With eyes widened in astonishment, they could barely believe what they saw. To my relief, they adapted to the environment faster than I had expected, and volunteered to help. I arranged for them to distribute our resources to the students and they also shared their food with some children who had nothing for lunch. Time flying, it then came to the end of our two-week adventure. Nia and Robyn were reluctant when they had to leave.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident. They frequently talked about the experience in Uganda, saying they wanted to do more for the children there. Conversations about electric devices and theme parks gave way to discussions about how they could make a difference to people living in areas struck by poverty. What’s more, they learnt to value their lives and regularly donated pocket money to charities. They asked me to bring their unused clothes and books to Uganda the next time I went there. Seeing all these changes, I felt a surge of warmth welling up in my heart. I was so proud that I had sowed the seeds of love and generosity in my daughters’ hearts.

When we stepped into the school, the scenes in front of us were much to the girls’ astonishment—the ragged children and the poorly equipped classroom. Everything here was beyond their wildest imagination. Nevertheless, we were greeted by broad grins and enthusiastic cheers from students there. Initially, Nia and Robyn were at a loss what to do but they soon joined me in distributing resources
to students. Subsequently, they volunteered to arrange new desks and chairs, which definitely amazed me. The next two weeks witnessed Nia and Robyn engaging themselves in making a little difference to the school. So keen were they that they did not notice time flying by and the deadline drew near.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident. No longer screaming for phones and theme parks, they cared more about the children in Uganda. Recalling the impressive experience, they planned to join Teams4u when they grow up. Apparent shifts in their life habits were also satisfying. Nia and Robyn would save daily resources, reminding each other of the hardship facing the children in Uganda. Instead of expecting to dine out, they enjoyed the sweetness of home-made food. The trip was a lesson in humility and gratitude. It was the girls’ transformation that filled me with pride and reminded me of the power of charity experiences to shape and enrich young minds.

The next morning, we headed out to a remote school with resources. The girls’ eyes widened in astonishment as they entered the classroom where the children sat on the floor without a desk. They didn’t say much but quickly joined me in assembling the desks and chairs we had brought and distributing food to the children. I knew something different started thriving in the girls. Over the next two weeks, they happily bonded with the local children. They played games, shared laughter, and adventured bravely in the wild together. Time zipped by before the girls realized it was time to say goodbye.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident. They stopped complaining about home-made food and no longer asked for new phones or expensive trips. Robyn even remarked how lucky she was to have such modern facilities at school. When Nia’s birthday approached, I asked her, “What gift do you want for your birthday?” To my amazement, Nia replied,“I... I’d really like another visit to Uganda,” her voice filled with longing and a desire to offer help. “Is that possible?” Stroking her head with deep affection and pride, I nodded my head, knowing my girls had really grown up.
