Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself.
She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays.A day’s work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money. She says:“I’m sure I wasn’t much of a help to start with. But when Derek built our family house about eight years ago, I was heavily involved (参与), painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills.”
Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds:“I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures. So, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.”
With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over the coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around £823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. A fifth wish to increase the value of their houses.Though DIY has traditionally been seen as a male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.

For nearly a decade now, Merebeth has been a self-employed pet transport specialist. Her pet transport job was born of the financial crisis (危机) in the late 2000s. The downturn hit the real estate (房地产) firm where she had worked for ten years as an office manager. The firm went broke and left her looking for a new job. One day, while driving near her home, she saw a dog wandering on the road, clearly lost. She took it home, and her sister in Denver agreed to take it. This was a loving home for sure, but 1,600 miles away. It didn’t take long for Merebeth to decide to drive the dog there herself. It was her first road trip to her new job.
Merebeth’s pet delivery service satisfies her wanderlust. It has taken her to every state in the US except Montana, Washington and Oregon, she says proudly. If she wants to visit a new place, she will simply find a pet with transport needs there. She travels in all weathers. She has driven through 55 mph winds in Wyoming, heavy flooding and storms in Alabama and total whiteout conditions in Kansas.
This wanderlust is inherited from her father, she says. He moved their family from Canada to California when she was one year old, because he wanted them to explore a new place together. As soon as she graduated from high school she left home to live on Catalina Island off the California coast, away from her parents, where she enjoyed a life of sailing and off-road biking.
It turns out that pet transporting pays quite well at about
$30,000 per year before tax. She doesn’t work in summer, as it would be unpleasantly hot for the animals in the car, even with air conditioning. As autumn comes, she gets restless—the same old wanderlust returning. It’s a call she must handle alone, though. Merebeth says, “When I’m on the road I’m just in my own world. I’ve always been independent-spirited and I just feel strongly that I must help animals.”
21.Why did Merebeth change her job?

C.Her sister asked her to move to Denver.
D.Her former employer was out of business.
答案:D

C.be close to nature D.travel to different places
答案:D

23
根据画线词前的“pet delivery service satisfies her”及画线词后的“taken her to every state in the US...Oregon”可以推知,画线词的含义与去不同的地方的愿望有关,故选D。

23.What can we learn about Merebeth in her new job?
A.She has chances to see rare animals.
B.She works hard throughout the year.
C.She relies on herself the whole time.
D.She earns a basic and tax-free salary.
答案:C
21
22
23
可知,Merebeth在夏天是不工作的,而非B项所说的全年都在辛苦工作,故B项表述错误;根据最后一段中的“It’s a call she must handle alone”及“I’ve always been independent-spirited”可知,Merebeth一直都是靠自己,故C项表述正确;根据最后一段中的“It turns out that...pays quite well at about $30,000 per year before tax.”

Passage 3
Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking. _____
Do you want to be a good public speaker? Here are some principles you must master.
16
A.Do the opposite.
B.You want to be an effective public speaker.
C.You don’t need to apologize for a minor slip.
D.When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.
E.The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience.
F.Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners.
G.However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.
G项中的“the majority of people (大多数人)”对应上句的“Some individuals (一些人)”,“train to be (训练使然)”对应上句的“are born with (与生俱来)”。
People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed and comfortable. Too often, when you stand up to give a speech, you focus on the “public” at the expense of the “speaking.” 17 Focus on the speaking. Talk directly to your audience, be yourself and make a connection.
17.答案:A
Even the most successful public speaker will make mistakes. Yet, the only one who cares about any mistake is the one who is speaking. People’s attention wanders constantly. In fact, most people only absorb about 20 percent of a speaker’s message. So, don’t stop speaking when you make a mistake unless it’s a truly serious one.
______
18
A.Do the opposite.
B.You want to be an effective public speaker.
C.You don’t need to apologize for a minor slip.
D.When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.
E.The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience.
F.Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners.
G.However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.
a minor slip (小错误)与上文的a mistake为同义替换。
Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. 19 And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember, even world champion athletes practice their skills on a consistent basis.
20 It’s rare to hear someone say, “I wish that speaker had spoken longer.” On the other hand, you probably can’t count the times that you’ve thought, “I’m glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever!” So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. It’s better to leave your listeners wishing for more than shifting restlessly in their seats waiting for your speech finally to end.
这里的less指的是less time, more指的是more benefits或more gains。

The Real Hero
I handed the card from my school’s help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort’s Deli (熟食店) at the Farmers Market in Los Angeles. Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.
It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.
“Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don’t like the way I do the job, don’t pay me,” I said. The tall man stared at me, and then nodded, “I’m Mort Robin. What’s your name?”
At Mort’s, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. “How much did that card at school say this job paid?” he asked.“One dollar an hour,” I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.
“That’s not enough for someone who works as hard as you,” Mort said. “You start at 1.25.” Over the next few weeks, I learned a lot about Mort. A few years older than my dad, he was from Chicago and had a daughter at my age. When things were slow, he often shared stories from his army days. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my struggling family.
One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large bald man in my father’s chair. He was shouting at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. I had been in Los Angeles just long enough to understand how essential a car was. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum—$325, or the car.
I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $325? Who would even consider lending me so much money?

The only person I could think of was Mort. Then I hurried to the store immediately. Standing in front of the door, I hesitated, thinking it was really absurd to ask for such a large amount of money. But I had no alternative but to pluck up the courage to knock at the door. In front of me stood Mort with a questioning look.“Umm, would you...would you please lend me $325?” I asked and told him what had happened to my family, feeling my hands sweating. Without saying anything,Mort lent me the money. Worried about my safety, he accompanied me back home. Together we went into the room and stood before the man. With Mort standing beside me, I became more courageous.
I calmly handed the man the money. “Now, get out of here!” I exclaimed firmly. After the man left, I explained the whole thing to my family. My father held Mort’s hands firmly, thanked him and promised to return the money as soon as he could. That night Mort became the real hero of my family. Because of his generosity and kindness, we not only kept our car but also paid off the debt. It was Mort Robin who made the world a better place for me.
The only person I could think of was Mort. Without hesitation I headed for the store, knocked at the door and waited anxiously. After a while, the door opened and there stood Mort, confused. Before he could ask me anything, I poured out what my family was facing.“So, could you possibly loan my father $325?” I could feel my face hot. Beyond my expectation, he turned around, returned with $325 in an envelope and handed it to me directly, saying “I’ll take back half your wages until it’s repaid.”“Thank you,” I said in a trembling voice, trying to fight back my tears. Then I hurried back home.
I calmly handed the man the money. That night I was a hero to my family. But the real hero was Mort Robin, who not only helped my family out, but also quietly raised my salary every month. By summer, I was earning $2.50 an hour, which doubled the original wage. Finally, I paid off the debt. It was Mr. Robin who made the world a better place for me.
