B The chasm (鸿沟) separating Garang Piol from his dream of attending Cape Town University, the top university of Africa, in 2018 was wide. The former soldier from the Republic of South Sudan needed money to pay tuition. In the years after the war’s ending in 2005, he had worked as an electrician in a school where he found a chance at education. Later, he worked for Atlanta’s Carter Center in South Sudan, helping root out Guinea worm disease. His salary paid for his living expenses and for his education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya, where he earned a degree in sustainable development. David Stobbelaar was in charge of the Carter Center in South Sudan in 2008 when Garang was assigned to his team. Stobbelaar says Garang impressed Carter Center staff with his intelligence, organization and communication abilities. The two became good friends over years and Garang told Stobbelaar his experience of being a soldier. When Stobbelaar was talking in 2015 to Dickstein Hughes, a friend who is a teacher, she was leading her 10th grade English class through a book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Soldier. “I was talking to David about some of my concerns and bringing my students closer to the humanity of the memoir, and he suggested that he could connect me with a former soldier,” she said. Garang soon was answering questions via Internet from the students. His talk was so impactful that Dickstein Hughes continued contacting him for the next three years, became Garang’s friend and came to know of his hopes of coming to Cape Town University for more schooling. Recommended by Dickstein Hughes, Garang was accepted at Cape Town, but the money became the sticking point. Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers. “Life has challenged him time and time again, and Garang has proved himself time and time again.” Dickstein Hughes said. Now Garang is one year into earning master’s degrees at Cape Town in international development and public health. He is anxious to return home and recreate the process that changed him. “I hope to change the life of others ─ to help them know they have a future,” Garang said. 4. What is the text mainly about? A.A chasm separated a Sudanese soldier from his dream. B.A Sudanese soldier fulfilled his dream with the help of friends. C.A Sudanese soldier realized his dream by telling his stories. D.A former Sudanese soldier hopes to change the life of others. 5. What does the author intend to tell us about Garang in paragraph 2? A.He went to school in 2005. B.He managed to get more schooling. C.He did different jobs to make money. D.He made contributions in rooting out Guinea worm disease. 6. Why did Garang’s friends like to help him? A.He used to be a soldier. B.He communicated with friends via Internet. C.He received high level education. D.His behavior impressed friends deeply. 7. What does the underlined part “sticking point” in paragraph 5 mean? A.Disadvantage. B.Mistake. C.Difficulty. D.Disappointment. C Hybrid vehicles, also known as hybrid electric cars (HECs), are automobiles powered by two or more energy sources. Compared with most ordinary cars on the present-day roads, they have several unique features. The biggest distinction is that HECs rely on both petrol and electricity for operation. A hybrid car is fitted with both a battery-driven motor and a petrol-fueled engine. Manufacturing a hybrid vehicle costs slightly more than a standard car, even with a smaller engine. The higher price results from the more complex engine structure. It has special mechanical parts that support its dual-power operation mode of petrol and electricity. Besides, it is equipped with a computer system different from that of traditional cars. Although it costs more to buy, it runs more cheaply than petrol-only vehicles. When a hybrid car stops at traffic lights or travels at a speed under 15 miles per hour, its special computer makes it run only on electric power. Once the computer detects the car needs extra power, it will restart the petrol engine. The computer keeps judging in real time whether the car should use electricity, petrol, or a mix of both. Since electric power assists its operation, a hybrid car consumes far less fuel than most vehicles. In fact, it is among the most fuel-efficient cars available now. On average, it can travel 50 to 60 miles per gallon of petrol. Such high fuel efficiency cuts drivers’ costs and helps save limited oil resources. Hybrid cars are also environmentally friendly in other ways. For instance, they produce no harmful polluting gases when running on electricity. Despite these differences from regular cars, hybrid vehicles deliver the same driving experience. They share the same control methods for acceleration and braking. However, HECs are generally smaller in size than petrol cars. Their streamlined, aerodynamic (空气动力学的) body improves fuel efficiency, yet it fails to increase the inner space of the car. 8. Which of the following best describes the features of a hybrid car? A.Safe and reliable. B.Costly but long-lasting. C.High purchase price, low pollution. D.Small engine with stronger power. 9. What controls the switch between petrol and electric power in a hybrid car? A.The engine. B.The battery. C.The driver. D.The computer. 10. What is the main purpose of inventing hybrid cars? A.To save energy resources. B.To upgrade driving services. C.To cut down purchase costs. D.To create a new driving experience. 11. What is the most likely source of this passage? A.A travel diary. B.A science magazine. C.health report. D.A car sales poster. D Every language and culture has curse words (脏话). What gives a curse word its power is partly its meaning and partly its sound. “In English, for example, curse words tend to contain a high percentage of plosive sounds—including P, T and K,” said Ryan McKay, a psychologist at University of London. Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to learn whether this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered whether it might even represent what’s called sound symbolism. Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means. The researchers first asked fluent speakers of Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Korean and Russian to list the most vulgar (粗俗的) words they could think of. Once they’d made a list of each language’s most frequently used curse words, the researchers compared these with neutral words from the same language. In these languages, they didn’t find the plosive sounds that seem common in English curse words. “Instead, we found that the vulgar words were defined by what they lacked: the approximant sounds that include letters I, L, R, W and Y, ”Dr. Lev-Ari said. Next, the scientists invited 215 native speakers of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The participants listened to pairs of words in a language they didn’t speak, and guessed which word in each pair was offensive. In reality, all the words were invented. For example, the researchers started with the Albanian word “zog, ” for “bird, ”and created the pair of fake words “yog" and “tsog. ”Participants were more likely to guess that words without approximants, such as “tsog, ” were curses. Finally, the researchers combed through the dictionary for English curse words and their cleaned-up versions. Once again, the clean versions included more of the sounds I, L, R, W and Y. A 20th-century linguistic (语言学的)principle claimed that the sounds of words were arbitrary: Any word could have any meaning. With curse words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, “the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning, ”said Lev-Ari. “That’s a new thing, ”said linguist Benjamin Bergen. “Curse words across languages, unrelated to each other, may pattern similarly. ”He also pointed out, to make sure the pattern of approximants missing from curses isn’t an accident, it would be nice to find it in an even larger sample of languages. 12. What is the purpose of McKay and Lev-Ari’s research? A.To analyze a phenomenon. B.To confirm an assumption. C.To explain a definition. D.To challenge a theory. 13. What were the participants asked to do in the second part of the research? A.To decide which curse words are used more frequently. B.To make up new curse words from real words. C.To guess a word’s offensiveness according to its sound. D.To identify the approximants in curse words. 14. What can be inferred from the comparison of English curse words and their cleaned-up versions? A.Changes in sound may make an expression seem less offensive. B.The two versions must have completely different meanings. C.Cleaned-up versions follow the same sound pattern in every language. D.The number of letters determines how offensive an expression is. 15. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.The old linguistic principle of sounds and meanings is wrong. B.In sound symbolism, a word’s sound represents its meaning. C.The research reveals the similarities between different languages. D.The result of the research is not fully accepted by scientists. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When is bedtime?______16______Inside every living thing is a clock that follows the sun. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” The boy didn’t dare to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Who gives a voice to an animal? A.Kevin Spacey. B.Pat Welsh. C.Andy Serkis. D.Eddie Murphy. 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 【导语】本文是一篇应用文,采用总分结构。开头说明电影配音对角色塑造的作用,随后以四个并列小标题分别介绍四位演员的代表角色、影片背景及表演特色。 【解析】 1.细节理解题。根据Kevin Spacey as Gerty in Moon (2009)部分的“Winner of an Oscar for his role in American Beauty, Spacey plays the role of Gerty, a robot and only companion of an astronaut about to finish his 3-year mission on the moon in Moon, directed by David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones.”(斯佩西曾因在《美国丽人》中的角色获得奥斯卡奖;在大卫·鲍伊的儿子邓肯·琼斯执导的《月球》中,他饰演机器人格蒂,它是一名即将结束三年月球任务的宇航员的唯一伙伴。)可知,句末“directed by ... Duncan Jones”说明的是电影Moon的导演,因此B项正确。A项American Beauty是让斯佩西获奖的影片,属于同句信息干扰,不能将演员获奖作品与所问导演的作品混淆;C项E. T. The Extra Terrestrial出现在另一部影片的介绍中,与本句的导演信息不对应;D项The Lord of the Rings是介绍安迪·瑟金斯饰演咕噜时提到的影片,原文未将其与邓肯·琼斯联系起来。故选B。 2.细节理解题。根据文章Pat Welsh as E.T. in E.T. The Extra Terrestrial(1982)部分中的“Steven Spielberg showed us the true meaning of friendship in this unforgettable classic, in which Pat Welsh played the role of the gentle alien we have all come to know and love.(在这部令人难忘的经典中,Steven Spielberg向我们展示了友谊的真谛,Pat Welsh饰演了一个我们都认识并热爱的温柔外星人)”可知,电影《E.T. The Extra Terrestrial》由Steven Spielberg执导,于1982年上映。这部电影以其深刻的情感描绘和独特的视觉效果,展现了友谊的真谛,深刻诠释了友谊的真正意义。故选A。 3.细节理解题。根据文章Eddie Murphy as Donkey (驴) in Shrek(2001)部分中的“It’s safe to say that Eddie Murphy was born to give a voice to Shrek’s Donkey.(可以说,Eddie Murphy天生就是为怪物史莱克的驴子配音的)”可知,Eddie Murphy配了驴的声音。故选D。 B The chasm (鸿沟) separating Garang Piol from his dream of attending Cape Town University, the top university of Africa, in 2018 was wide. 【答案】4.B 5.B 6.D 7.C 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,采用设置困境、回溯经历、推进事件、展望未来的结构。开头点明主人公因学费不足而面临求学障碍,随后回溯其战后工作、接受教育及结识朋友的经历,接着叙述师生为其筹款的过程,结尾交代求学进展及回乡帮助他人的愿望。 【解析】 4.主旨大意题。文章首段以“The former soldier from the Republic of South Sudan needed money to pay tuition.”(这位来自南苏丹共和国的退伍军人需要钱支付学费。)点明求学困境;第五段写道“Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers.”(因此,迪克斯坦·休斯和她的学生开设了一个网络筹款账户,挨家挨户募捐并举办筹款活动。);末段“Now Garang is one year into earning master’s degrees at Cape Town in international development and public health.”(如今,加朗已在开普敦攻读国际发展和公共卫生硕士学位一年。) 根据第二段的“In the years after the war’s ending in 2005, he had worked as an electrician in a school where he found a chance at education...His salary paid for his living expenses and for his education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya, where he earned a degree in sustainable development.”(在2005年战争结束后的几年里,他曾在一所学校当电工,在那里他找到了接受教育的机会……他的工资支付了他在肯尼亚东非天主教大学(Catholic University of Eastern Africa)的生活费和教育费用,并在那里获得了可持续发展学位。)可知,作者在第二段主要是想告诉我们Garang设法接受了更多的教育。故选B。 6.推理判断题。根据第三段的“Stobbelaar says Garang impressed Carter Center staff with his intelligence, organization and communication abilities.”(Stobbelaar说,加朗的智慧、组织和沟通能力给卡特中心的工作人员留下了深刻印象。)可推断出,加朗的朋友喜欢帮助他是因为他的行为给朋友们留下了深刻的印象。故选D。 7.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段的“Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers.”(因此,Dickstein Hughes和她的班级开设了一个GoFundMe账户,挨家挨户地进行筹款活动。)可知,进行筹款肯定是因为Garang需要钱,因此划线词所在的句子的意思是“钱成了困难所在”,划线词的意思是“困难”,即Difficulty,故选C。 C Hybrid vehicles, also known as hybrid electric cars (HECs), are automobiles powered by two or more energy sources. 【答案】8.C 9.D 10.A 11.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,采用总分结构,并通过比较说明事物特点。首段界定混合动力汽车及其双动力配置,第二段解释购置成本和动力切换机制,第三段说明节能与减排优势,末段比较驾驶体验、车身设计和内部空间。 【解析】 8.细节理解题。此题需要整合购置成本与环保表现两方面信息。第二段指出“Manufacturing a hybrid vehicle costs slightly more than a standard car, even with a smaller engine. The higher price results from the more complex engine structure.”(即使采用较小的发动机,制造混合动力汽车的成本也略高于普通汽车。较高的价格源于更复杂的发动机结构。),说明其购置价格较高。第三段又指出“Hybrid cars are also environmentally friendly in other ways. For instance, they produce no harmful polluting gases when running on electricity.”(混合动力汽车在其他方面也有利于环境。例如,使用电力运行时,它们不会产生有害的污染气体。),说明其具有减少污染的特点。C项将这两方面信息准确合并;这里的低污染不等于在所有运行状态下都完全没有排放。A项“安全且可靠”缺少原文依据;B项虽提到成本高,但“使用寿命长”未被提及;D项利用文中“较小的发动机”设置干扰,却额外加入“动力更强”的无依据比较。故选C。 9.细节理解题。根据第二段“The computer keeps judging in real time whether the car should use electricity, petrol, or a mix of both.(电脑会实时判断车辆应当使用电力、汽油,还是两者混用。)”可知,电脑控制汽油与电力之间的切换。 10.推理判断题。根据第三段“Such high fuel efficiency cuts drivers’ costs and helps save limited oil resources.(如此高的燃油效率降低了驾驶者的开销,同时有助于节约有限的石油资源。)”可知,研发混合动力汽车的主要目的是节约能源资源。 11.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其根据第二段“The higher price results from the more complex engine structure. It has special mechanical parts that support its dual-power operation mode of petrol and electricity. Besides, it is equipped with a computer system different from that of traditional cars.(更高的售价源于更为复杂的发动机结构。该车配备特殊机械部件,用以支撑汽油与电力双动力运行模式。此外,它搭载了一套与传统汽车截然不同的计算机控制系统。)”等内容可知,全文客观科普混合动力汽车的构造、工作原理、优缺点等专业知识,结合文章科普客观的行文风格,可知本文最有可能出自一本科普杂志。 D Every language and culture has curse words (脏话). 【答案】12.B 13.C 14.A 15.B 【导语】本文是一篇实验研究类说明文,按照提出问题、分步验证、讨论结论的结构展开。前两段由脏话的发音特点引出声音与词义是否相关的研究问题,中间三段依次呈现多语言词汇比较、虚构词语判断和英语词汇对照三项研究,末段讨论研究对既有理论的启示,并指出扩大语言样本的必要性。 【解析】 12.推理判断题。根据第二段“Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to learn whether this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered whether it might even represent what’s called sound symbolism. Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means.”(麦凯博士与同事希里·列夫-阿里合作,想了解这一熟悉的模式是否也存在于英语之外的语言中。 根据第四段中“Next, the scientists invited 215 native speakers of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The participants listened to pairs of words in a language they didn’t speak, and guessed which word in each pair was offensive.”(接下来,科学家们邀请了215名以阿拉伯语、汉语、芬兰语、法语、德语和西班牙语为母语的人。参与者听了几组他们不会说的语言的单词,并猜测每组单词中哪个是冒犯性的。)可知,在第二部分研究中,参与者被要求根据一个词的发音来猜测它的冒犯性。故选C项。 14.推理判断题。根据第五段“Finally, the researchers combed through the dictionary for English curse words and their cleaned-up versions. Once again, the clean versions included more of the sounds I, L, R, W and Y.”(最后,研究人员查阅词典,比较英语脏话及其较为文雅的替代表达。研究再次发现,较为文雅的版本包含更多文中所列的这些声音。),结合末段“the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning”(声音本身似乎承载意义)可推断,声音的变化可能使表达听起来不那么冒犯。A项使用may保留了研究结论的适用限度,符合原文。B项说两种版本的含义必须完全不同,原文没有这一结论;C项把英语中的比较结果扩大到每一种语言,范围过大;D项混淆声音特点与字母数量,研究未将冒犯性归因于字母数量。故选A。 15.主旨理解与信息判断题。末段直接指出“With curse words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, ‘the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning,’ said Lev-Ari.”(然而,列夫-阿里说,在脏话中,就像在其他语音象征的例子中一样,声音本身似乎承载着意义。) When is bedtime?______16______Inside every living thing is a clock that follows the sun. For a long time, people assumed that daylight told animals when to go to sleep or wake up. See light, wake. See dark, sleep. Then, in 1729, a French scientist named Jean-Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan did an experiment with a mimosa (含羞草), a plant that folds up its leaves at night.______17______From time to time, he peeked inside. To his surprise, the leaves continued to open and close each day as usual, even in total darkness. And he had discovered a new thing about living creatures. Inside every cell, there is a tiny clock that keeps track of whether it’s morning, noon, or night on the 24-hour cycle of a day.______18______Every cell in the body has its own tiny time-clicker. A master timekeeper in the brain keeps all these cell clocks in step. For humans, a small group of cells at the back of the eye are in charge of the special job.______19______The master clock then sends “wake up” or “sleep” chemicals to all your cells. You can feel light reset your clock if you fly to a different time zone. For a few days you get sleepy at bedtime back home even if it’s afternoon in your new place. This is called “jet lag”.______20______But soon the bright light in the morning and dark at night will reset your master clock to match the local time where you are, and you’re back on schedule. So don’t worry if you forget your watch—your clock inside will keep you on sun time. A. Inside every cell, there is a tiny clock. B. That’s your body’s internal clock at work. C. If you don’t have a phone or watch, don’t worry. D. To learn more about this, scientists did some research. E. They signal when they see strong daylight or growing darkness. F. He put some of the plants in a cupboard and kept them in constant darkness. G. These timekeepers cause cells to do different things at different times of day. 及空后“Inside every living thing is a clock that follows the sun.”(每个生物体内都有一个跟随太阳运行的时钟。)可知,空处先回应如何判断时间的问题,再引出生物钟。C项“If you don’t have a phone or watch, don’t worry.”(如果没有手机或手表,不必担心。)承接设问,后文解释不必担心的原因;它还与末段忘带手表也不必担心的表述形成照应。A项过早进入细胞层面的说明;B项中的That缺少明确指代对象;D项提出研究,不能直接衔接此处的生活设问;E、F、G项分别涉及光照信号、植物实验和细胞活动,均不适合用来引入整篇话题。故选C。 17.根据上文“Then, in 1729, a French scientist named Jean-Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan did an experiment with a mimosa (含羞草), a plant that folds up its leaves at night.”(1729年,法国科学家Jean-Jacques d 'Ortous de Mairan用含羞草做了一个实验,含羞草是一种夜间折叠叶子的植物。)可知,选项承接上文继续说明在含羞草在黑夜的实验。故F选项“他把一些植物放在橱柜里,让它们一直处于黑暗中。”切题。故选F项。 18.根据上文“And he had discovered a new thing about living creatures.
