Nikola Tesla was one of the most forward-thinking inventors and engineers in history. He was born on July 10th, 1856, in Smiljan (now in Croatia). As a child, he could work out difficult mathematical equations (方程式) entirely in his mind without writing them down. Young Tesla was also attracted by thunderstorms and lightning. He drew inventions like turbines and engines, and even created a tiny waterwheel by observing the local river.
In 1875, Tesla attended the Technical University of Graz, where he studied physics, mechanics, and mathematics. During his time there, he became interested in the Gramme electric generator, which generated direct current (DC,直流电). He also explored fields like electrical engineering before they were widely taught. In his second year, Tesla stopped attending lectures and studied independently instead. In 1877, he went to the University of Prague.
In 1882, Tesla worked for the Continental Edison Company in Paris, improving DC generators and motors. In 1884, he moved to New York and was hired to work for Thomas Edison. But soon, he left Edison’s company and set up his own. He developed his own alternating current (AC,交流电) motors and transformers and earned several patents for them.
Tesla’s work extended far beyond electric power. He is believed to have been the first person to send and receive radio signals when he displayed a remote-controlled boat in 1898. He also patented various basic radio circuits (电路) that formed the basis for modern radio technology.
Tesla came up with many ideas ahead of his time, like wireless networks, self-driving vehicles, smart homes, and AI. But his poor business skills meant many of these technologies could not be fully realized until much later by others. In his final years, he lived in poverty, depending on the kindness of friends. Despite this, his inventions have changed the world and continue to influence technology today.
1. What inspired Tesla’s creativity?
A. His teachers’ requirements.
B. His desire to make money.
C. His experiences of observing nature.
D. His early exposure to electrical experiment.
2. What can be inferred about Tesla from his school education?
A. He had a strong self-learning ability.
B. He was not satisfied with the limited lessons.
C. He didn’t like the traditional teaching methods.
D. He had a hard time getting along with his classmates.
3. Why didn’t Tesla’s many ideas come true?
A. Lack of technological support.
B. His inability to do business.
C. His focus on radio technology.
D. Limited interest from the public.
★B
Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. “Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills for everyone — not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”
4. What surprised the researchers most during MacCann’s study?
A. Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B. EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C. College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D. Personality affected academic performance greatly.
5. What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann’s study?
A. High-EI students hardly experience negative emotions.
B. High-EI students seldom develop social relationships.
C. High-EI students tend to easily focus on their study.
D. High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
6. What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B. Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C. Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D. Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Should EI be taught in school?
B. How can students develop high EI?
C. Students with high EI do better in school
D. Good students do better in managing emotions

Hundreds of sharks are currently hiding in a canal in Florida as they attempt to escape a poisonous algal bloom (藻华) sweeping the state’s Gulf Coast, according to news reports. Four shark species have been hiding in the canal near Longboat Key in Sarasota County since July 26th.
Experts think the sharks have retreated into the canal to avoid the red tide — an out-of-control growth of tiny plants called algae that release a powerful neurotoxin (神经毒素) called brevetoxin — along the Florida coast, which has entered the food chain and damaged the marine ecosystem.
The red tide is a common name for blooms created by algae. Their brevetoxin can disturb the function of nerve cells. Algal blooms can occur when excess nutrients enter the ocean through river systems, causing algae to grow and reproduce rapidly and uncontrollably. Excess nutrients can result from soil erosion (侵蚀), fertilizer and animal waste from farms.
This year’s red tide is one of the worst ever in Florida. In July, more than 800 tons of dead fish and sea life, including dolphins and manatees (海牛), were washed up onto the land in Pinellas County along the Gulf Coast. In the past eight days, very high concentrations of algae have been found around St. Petersburg and Sarasota.
As the red tide continues, it’s dubious how long the sharks may be stuck. “If the conditions outside the canal are really bad, they might be stuck until there’s enough oxygen or there aren’t toxins,” said Mike Heithaus, a shark expert at Florida International University. “However, if it goes on long enough, they’ll run out of food and energy, and unfortunately, some of them, if not all of them, will die.”
If excess nutrients keep making their way into the oceans, the red tide will continue to be a problem for sharks and other marine life in the future. “Seeing these kinds of things happen just shows how out of balance the ecosystem has become,” Heithaus said. “We really need to start working hard in Florida on addressing some of the causes of these blooms.”
8. Why are the sharks hiding in the canal near Longboat Key?
A. To avoid enemies.
B. To look for more food.
C. To seek for a safe habitat.
D. To stay away from the red tide.
9. Which best explains “dubious” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. Unclear. B. Unlikely.
C. Unbelievable. D. Unquestionable.
10. What does Heithaus think of sharks’ possible long stay in the canal?
A. It is complex. B. It is concerning.
C. It is common. D. It is surprising.
11. What can we infer about the red tide?
A. It will last for a long time.
B. It can worsen algal blooms.
C. It can be cleaned up quickly.
D. It poses a health risk to many species.

National Skip the Straw Day (国家无吸管日) is held on the fourth Friday in February every year in America. It is to remind people to give up straws in their drinks as a way to fight plastic pollution and help the planet. Straws show up on beaches and in waterways around the world. ____12____
In 2019, volunteers removed nearly a million straws and stirrers (搅拌棒) in a single day’s efforts. Since 1986, volunteers have collected nearly 14 million straws and stirrers from beaches and waterways around the world. ____13____ After all, before 2019, about half-billion straws were used daily in the US-enough to fill 127 school buses, circle the Earth 2.5 times, and weigh as much as 1,000 cars.
____14____ It’s an easy first lift that will have a snowball effect on other areas. When you choose to skip the straw, you begin to think about and realize how so many other single-use plastics are unnecessary. Suddenly, you start to consider using reusable shopping bags and coffee cups. ____15____ And along the way, collectively, you are having an effect, and showing companies that they need to do better.
If you have not yet given up straws, then this is the year to do so. Use your lips to drink from a glass. Buy a coffee cup that comes with a built-in straw. Explore straws made from paper, bamboo, and glass. ____16____ But this is one of the easiest ways to protect the environment. Remember, reducing plastic waste includes more than simply straws; it also includes packaging and single-use plastics in daily life.
A. That may seem impossibly high.
B. Avoiding straws may not save the world.
C. It is best to carry a few straws and use them whenever needed.
D. Next, you might look for things that are packaged in reusable boxes.
E. Avoiding straws can get people used to the idea of giving up plastics.
F. The collection numbers are a small part of the number of straws actually being used.
G. They are among the top 10 most common things found during the coastal cleanup event.

Elma, a 70-year-old woman, boarded the bus and immediately received a phone call. Her voice trembled as she spoke, and her nervousness caught the attention of Mark, the bus driver. Mark had seen Elma at the bus stop before and had exchanged greetings with her a few times, so he was naturally concerned when he heard her anxious tone. He glanced at her through the center mirror and saw the worried look on her face.
Mark overheard Elma mention that she needed to get all her money from the bank. She explained to him that her grandson Jimmy had been arrested (逮捕) for robbery and needed $35,000 for bail (保释). Mark sensed something was wrong; he knew that robbery bail shouldn’t cost that much and had heard of tricks aiming at the elderly. He asked Elma to stay on the bus until he finished his route so they could figure out what was happening. He offered to help, but Elma insisted on going to the bank right away.
Half an hour later, Mark asked Elma to call the number back. When she did, a man answered and claimed he didn’t know her personally. Despite this, Elma still believed she had been talking to her grandson. Mark urged her to call the police, but she refused, insisting on getting the money. Mark tried to reason with her, explaining that the person on the phone might be trying to cheat her, but Elma remained doubtful. She insisted that she had spoken to Jimmy and needed to help him. Mark realized he needed to find another way to help her understand the situation.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C

【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.”(最后,根据MacCann的说法,情商所需的技能,如理解人类动机和情绪,可能与掌握某些科目所需的技巧重叠,如历史和语言,使学生在这些科目领域具有优势。)
根据最后一段中的“she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills”(她建议采取涉及整个学校的干预措施,包括额外的教师培训和关注教师的幸福感和情感技能)以及“training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists”(由教师而不是外部专家进行培训效果更好)可知,MacCann建议要培养教师的情商培养技能。故选A项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段“Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.”(美国心理学会发表的一项研究表明,能够更好地理解和有效管理自己情绪的学生,即情商(EI),在学校的表现比那些情商较低的同学要好)可知,本文主要讲述了情商高的学生学业表现更好,故C项“高情商的学生在学校表现更好”作标题最为恰当。故选C项。

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第一段中“Hundreds of sharks are currently hiding in a canal in Florida as they attempt to escape a poisonous algal bloom (藻华) sweeping the state’s Gulf Coast, according to news reports.(据新闻报道,数百条鲨鱼目前正躲藏在佛罗里达州的一条运河中,试图逃离席卷该州墨西哥湾沿岸的有毒藻类爆发。)”以及第二段“Experts think the sharks have retreated into the canal to avoid the red tide-an out-of-control growth of tiny plants called algae that release a powerful neurotoxin (神经毒素) called brevetoxin-along the Florida coast, which has entered the food chain and damaged the marine ecosystem.(专家认为,鲨鱼已退入运河,以避开佛罗里达海岸沿线爆发的赤潮。赤潮是被称为藻类的微小植物的失控生长,这类藻类会释放一种名为短裸甲藻毒素的强效神经毒素,这种毒素已进入食物链,破坏了海洋生态系统。)”可知,鲨鱼躲进运河是为了躲避有毒的赤潮。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词句中“As the red tide continues, it’s dubious how long the sharks may be stuck.( 随着赤潮持续,鲨鱼可能被困多长时间仍dubious。)”
根据第五段中““However, if it goes on long enough, they’ll run out of food and energy, and unfortunately, some of them, if not all of them, will die.”(“然而,如果持续的时间足够长,它们就会耗尽食物和能量,不幸的是,它们中的一些,如果不是全部的话,会死亡。” )”可推知,他认为鲨鱼长期困在运河中会面临食物耗尽、死亡的风险,这一局面是令人担忧的。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This year’s red tide is one of the worst ever in Florida. In July, more than 800 tons of dead fish and sea life, including dolphins and manatees (海牛), were washed up onto the land in Pinellas County along the Gulf Coast. In the past eight days, very high concentrations of algae have been found around St. Petersburg and Sarasota.(今年的赤潮是佛罗里达州有史以来最严重的之一。7月份,超过800吨死鱼和海洋生物,包括海豚和海牛,被冲上墨西哥湾沿岸皮内拉斯县的陆地。过去八天里,圣彼得堡和萨拉索塔周边地区发现了极高浓度的藻类。)”可知,文章提到赤潮释放神经毒素,已导致大量鱼类、海豚等死亡,且若营养物质继续流入,赤潮将持续危害海洋生物,因此可推断赤潮对许多物种构成健康风险。

Dear teacher,
I’m writing to express my warm support for our school’s new reading class of Charlotte’s Web.
I think this is a wonderful arrangement. The novel uses simple and authentic English, which can effectively help us improve our reading ability and accumulate useful vocabulary. Meanwhile, its theme of true friendship inspires us a lot and brings us positive life guidance.
I’d like to suggest holding regular sharing sessions. In this way, we can exchange our reading feelings and gain deeper understanding of the book.
Looking forward to the new class.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【参考范文2】
Dear teacher,
I’m writing to share my views on the upcoming Charlotte’s Web reading class.
To be honest, I think it may not be suitable for us students. We are facing heavy study pressure and tight study schedules. Taking extra reading classes will take up much of our time for reviewing lessons and doing exercises. What’s more, some original English expressions are difficult to understand, which may make us feel frustrated.
I suggest choosing shorter and easier articles for reading training to balance our study and reading practice.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Just then, Mark saw policemen on the street and stopped to talk to them. He rushed over and reported the suspicious situation without hesitation, judging that it was a typical elderly telecom cheat. After learning the whole story, the policemen hurried to the bus to persuade the stubborn Elma. They showed her plenty of real cheating cases online and explained officially that legal bail would never require people to transfer or withdraw money urgently through private phone calls. Mark stayed by her side all the time, comforting her gently and encouraging her to listen to the professional explanation carefully.
With the police’s explanation, Elma finally understood the seriousness of the situation. She was greatly shocked by the terrifying truth and felt a strong sense of luck to meet the warm-hearted and responsible bus driver Mark. She sincerely apologized for her previous stubbornness and thanked Mark and the policemen from the bottom of her heart. To make herself fully assured, she immediately dialed her grandson Jimmy’s personal phone. After confirming that her grandson was safe and sound, she finally let out a sigh of relief and felt totally relaxed. This painful lesson taught her to stay alert and never believe in suspicious phone calls blindly.
