PEP English Selective Compulsory Book 1
Unit 1 People of Achievement
Listening & Speaking Lesson Plan (Period 3)
Key Points & Difficult Points
Key Points
1. Catch key details in the listening: names, jobs, achievements and what each speaker thinks of them.
2. Use opinion expressions in speaking: In my opinion... / The reason why... is that... / A good example is...
Difficult Points
1. Tell the speaker's real attitude from tone and word choice, especially Dr Wang's line "money isn't everything".
2. Give a short talk on "what makes a person great" with a clear example, not just "he is famous".

Teaching Procedures (45 mins)
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
(2 mins) Play the audio of Mao Zedong's poem "Qin Yuan Chun · Snow". Students read along quietly.
Teacher says: "Close your books. Just listen and enjoy. If you know some lines, read along with me."
(3 mins) Ask two quick questions to pull out the theme.
Teacher says: "Who wrote this poem? And what about the last line — 'for truly great men, look to this age alone'? What does that mean to you?"
Students talk in pairs for 1 minute, then 2 students share with the class.
Teacher writes on board: What makes a person great?
Step 2 Listening (15 mins)
(3 mins) Pre-listening: Show six people on the screen: Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jack Ma, Alexander Fleming, Florence Nightingale, Zhong Nanshan. Students match each person with their achievement using prior knowledge.
Teacher says: "Look at these six people. Match them with what they did. Two minutes, go."
Students work individually, then check with deskmate. Teacher calls out answers quickly.
(4 mins) First play: Students fill in the blanks (gap-filling) while listening.
Teacher says: "Now listen for the first time. Fill in the blanks with words you hear. Don't worry if you miss one — we'll listen again."
Play recording once. Students write. Play a second time if many students look unsure.
(4 mins) Second play: Students track which speaker admires which person. Tick in the table.
Teacher says: "This time, listen for opinions. Who does Dr Wang admire? Who does Wang Lin admire? Who does Anna admire? Tick in the table."
Play recording once. Students tick.
(3 mins) Third play: Students answer three comprehension questions. Focus on Dr Wang's tone.
Teacher says: "One more listening. Answer the three questions. Number 3 is tricky — when Dr Wang says 'money isn't everything', is he angry? Is he joking? Listen to his tone."
Play recording once. Students write answers.
(1 min) Check answers. Students compare with deskmate first, then teacher calls on 3 students to report.
Step 3 Speaking Practice (10 mins)
(2 mins) Review opinion expressions on the board. Teacher gives a quick personal demo.
Teacher writes: In my opinion... / The reason why... is that... / A good example is...
Teacher says: "Watch me. In my opinion, my mother is a great person. The reason why I admire her is that she raised three kids alone. A good example is that she worked two jobs to pay for our school."
Point out: Don't just say "he is great because he is famous". Give a reason and an example.
(5 mins) Group of 4 discusses: What makes a person great? Each group picks one person and prepares a 1-minute report.
Teacher says: "Groups of four. Talk about who you think is great and why. Use the expressions on the board. One of you takes notes, one reports, one watches the time. You have five minutes."
Teacher walks around, listens, helps with words if students get stuck.
(3 mins) 2-3 groups give their reports. Teacher gives short feedback after each.
Feedback focus: Did they use an opinion expression? Did they give a real example?
Step 4 Extension (10 mins)
(4 mins) Hand out a short excerpt about national medal recipients. Students read silently and underline qualities they find.
Teacher says: "Read this short passage. Underline words that describe what these heroes are like. For example, if it says 'she worked day and night', that shows hard work. Underline it."
Students read and underline.
(6 mins) Class discussion: What qualities keep coming up? Build a list on the board.
Teacher says: "What did you underline? Let's make a list together."
Students call out words. Teacher writes 3-4 key qualities on board (e.g. responsibility, devotion, modesty).
Teacher says: "Now pick one quality. Can you think of a real person who has it? Tell your deskmate."
Students share in pairs. 1-2 students tell the class.
Step 5 Summary & Homework (5 mins)
(2 mins) Quick summary using the board.
Teacher says: "Today we heard three people talk about who is great. We learned that greatness isn't about money or fame. It's about what you do for other people. Remember the three expressions — use them when you talk about people you admire."
(3 mins) Assign homework. Students write it down.
Teacher says: "Homework: Write about 100 words on a person you admire. It can be your parent, a teacher, a famous person — anyone. Use at least two of the opinion expressions from today. Hand it in next class."

"Hello everyone. The greatest person I know is Dr Zhong Nanshan. In my opinion, greatness means sacrifice and devotion, not fame or money. The reason why I admire him is that he always tells the truth and risks his own safety to help patients. A good example is that at 84, he rushed to Wuhan to fight COVID-19. His sense of responsibility is what makes him great. Thank you."
