Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
4. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A. Her experience of a destructive fire.
B. Her interest in computer programming.
C. Her desire to win the science award.
D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
5. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to operate.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
6. What can we know about Shanya from the text?
A. She is persistent and creative.
B. Her device is cheaper than previous ones.
C. Her invention is widely used now.
D. She invented the device just for the award.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A fire detection system is upgraded.
B. A middle schooler shines in TFSJIC.
C. The TFSJIC ends with glory and promise.
D. Shanya Gill inspires the disadvantaged youth.

For years, employees have valued corner offices with expansive views, but is there real cognitive value in sitting by a window? A recent study analysing data from over 3,700 students taking China’s gaokao — a test that determines university admissions — offers convincing evidence. Students were randomly assigned to seats in standardized rooms. Those seated next to a window with an outside view scored 8.9% higher than peers in the middle of the room on average. Crucially, those next to a window with a blocked view showed no such benefit, ruling out simple explanations like lighting.
The study’s authors attribute the effect to ART (Attention Restoration Theory). ART suggests that gazing at nature or open views can gently engage the brain’s “soft fascination”, allowing focused attention to recover from fatigue. During a demanding exam, a brief mental break to look outside may help students recharge. Supporting this, the effect was strongest among students who teachers had noted as having difficulty sustaining attention in class, and among male students who tend to struggle more with prolonged focus.
The findings also dismiss several alternative explanations. Improved lighting and air flow are unlikely, as the window with a blocked view — offering similar light and air — produced no score gain. External noise, strictly controlled during exams, cannot account for the difference either. The effect is noteworthy: it rivals the impact of substantial financial motivation on student performance and outweighs some negative effects like temperature increases or air pollution documented in similar settings.
This research carries practical implications for fairness in testing. Since seat assignments are often random, some students gain an unintentional advantage. Simple solutions, such as removing the window-seat column or changing seats across subjects, could level the playing field. The study also highlights the broader value of restorative environments, from classrooms to workplaces, where window views remain the most desired amenity (舒适配套) among North American employees. While the authors caution that distractions from window views may matter in low-risk settings, the message is clear: our built environment shapes our minds in subtle but significant ways.
8. The study finds that students ______.
A. valued corner seats with outside views. B. could benefit from improved lighting.
C. performed differently due to the position. D. were easily distracted by outside views.
9. According to ART, a window view helps students to ______.
A. create a calming effect. B. restore their mental focus.
C. finish the exam without fatigue. D. block out distracting noises.
10. What does the underlined word “rivals” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Increases. B. Reduces. C. Equals. D. Highlights.
11. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To discuss the limitations of the study.
B. To propose ways to ensure fair test conditions.
C. To suggest improvements in classroom design.
D. To highlight the broader significance of the findings.

In a world first, China has approved a brain implant for commercial use in people with spinal cord (脊髓) injuries. The device is a brain-computer interface (脑机接口) made by Shanghai’s Neuracle Medical Technology, a competitor of Elon Musk’s BCI firm Neuralink. Brain implants have been used in clinical tests for decades, but this is the first time such a device has been approved for wide use on patients.
BCIs, sometimes known as brain-machine interfaces, record brain activity. Invasive BCIs like Neuracle’s are surgically implanted in or on the brain to record electrical signals from nerve cells. Software decodes these signals to control a computer mouse or an artificial arm. One of the first BCIs was created in the early 2000s by a research group BrainGate.
Neuracle’s BCI, a coin-sized wireless implant on the brain’s outer membrane (膜), is designed for people with spinal cord injuries who still have some upper arm function. While most BCIs are generally developed to assist people with paralysis (瘫痪) or other physical disabilities, Musk’s Neuralink envisions a future where such devices can also benefit healthy individuals, an ambitious goal that still lies far in the future.
In the US, Neuralink has come the closest to commercializing this technology, but questions about the device’s safety remain. In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially rejected a bid for Neuralink to test its technology in a clinical trial. A trial was eventually approved the following year, and Noland Arbaugh, who was paralyzed below the neck, became the first user to have a Neuralink implant. As of January 2026, the company said it had 21 participants enrolled in its trial. Many other American start-up companies, such as Synchron, are developing their own BCIs and are also running ongoing trials.
While there is convincing evidence from these clinical tests, the devices are still considered experimental. Installing brain implants requires brain surgery, after all, which is highly invasive and carries a risk of infection. And the implants can sometimes move or cause scar tissue buildup over time that degrades their signals. No BCI devices have been approved for commercial use in the U. S. so far.
12. What’s special about Neuracle’s BCI?
A. It controls an artificial arm.
B. It first applies to healthy people.
C. It receives approval for commercial use.
D. It’s the world’s earliest BCI product.
13. How does the implanted BCI work?
A. By recording the brain signals. B. By controlling a robotic glove.
C. By stimulating the nerve cells. D. By recovering upper arm ability.
14. Why does the author mention Synchron in paragraph 4?
A. To explain the US companies take the lead.
B. To show BCIs are seeing rapid development.
C. To advertise for the newly-founded enterprise.
D. To prove Neuralink has a powerful competitor.
15. Which of the following statements best describes BCIs according to the text?
A. Useful but not acceptable. B. Invasive but highly reliable.
C. Dangerous but worth trying. D. Technically progressive but risky.

Illeism: The Ancient Trick to Help You Think More Wisely
As a writer specialising in psychology, I’ve come across hundreds of evidence-based tips for better thinking. Few have proven as useful to me as the ancient mental skill of illeism.
Put simply, illeism is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person rather than the first person. ____16____ In the statesman Julius Caesar’s account of the Gallic War, for example, he wrote “Caesar defended the public” rather than “I defended the public”.
To the modern ear, illeism can sound a little silly or self-important. ____17____ If we are trying to make a difficult decision, viewing ourselves in the third person can help to reduce the emotions that could lead our thinking off track, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem.
____18____ When making personal choices, we become too caught up in our strong feelings, which cloud our thinking and prevent us from putting our issues in perspective. If we have received negative feedback from a colleague, for example, our feeling of embarrassment might lead us to become overly self-defensive.
By switching to the third person, our descriptions of the situation will start to sound as if we are talking about someone else rather than ourselves. ____19____ Besides helping us view troubles more objectively, illeism can also encourage us to keep a calm mind when facing daily stresses.
Next time you face a challenging situation, try referring to yourself as “he” or “she” instead of “I”. ____20____
A. Politicians often use this method.
B. This creates helpful distance from emotions.
C. So why do emotions affect our decisions so much?
D. Yet research shows illeism brings real thinking benefits.
E. However, lack of objectivity can be problematic when choosing.
F. But how can we get rid of these bad feelings in decision-making?
G. You might be surprised at how much clearer your thinking becomes.

Ezri and Oliver were so keen to climb the mountain that they begged to join their dad Brandon for another hike. Just after 8 a.m. on a beautiful Sunday morning, they set off. Brandon’s backpack held Clif bars (能量棒), packets of apple sauce, apples, water bottles and fishing gear.
Brandon had planned a varied route up the mountain. The winding upward slope was fun and uneventful. Near the top, thick snow blanketed the path. Excitedly, the kids raced across the hard surface. They shared the second-last Clif bar and rested for an hour. Brandon looked around. His phone showed 1:30 p.m. and no signals. When the kids started down, Brandon said, “You guys really want to find those fishing lakes, don’t you?”
“Oh, yes!” Ezri said.
So they took an unfamiliar route down the other side of the mountain.
By the time Brandon realized the path had become an animal trail alongside a stream, it made sense to keep following it. The stream sang to them, and they kept following it down. Mid-afternoon, when the sun disappeared behind heavy gray clouds, they suddenly felt lost, cold and hungry. For half an hour they cautiously moved downward until they reached a steep cliff (悬崖) edge. The stream became a noisy, six-metre waterfall. Mist enveloped them as the water raced over a huge rock.
Brandon cursed (咒骂) himself for taking an unknown route. They held hands and inched down until Oliver slid on a loose rock and all three went flying.
Brandon wiped blood from his forehead and gathered his senses. Was anyone hurt? Oliver, crying and shivering, seemed okay. Ezri was weeping, but she too appeared uninjured. Brandon himself didn’t feel anything worse than the wound on his forehead. The backpack was stuck in the rocks six meters away. He saw no use trying to find it back. The air was cold and getting colder. They were wet and tired.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
To save the kids, Brandon realized he had to look for a way out alone.

A 5. B 6. A 7. B

C 9. B 10. C 11. D

C 13. A 14. B 15. D

A 17. D 18. C 19. B 20. G
前文“Put simply, illeism is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person rather than the first person. (简而言之,illeism就是用第三人称而不是第一人称来谈论自己的做法。)”对illeism给出了定义,后文“In the statesman Julius Caesar’s account of the Gallic War, for example, he wrote “Caesar defended the public” rather than “I defended the public”. (例如,在政治家尤利乌斯·凯撒关于高卢战争的记述中,他写的是“凯撒保卫了公众”,而不是“我保卫了公众”。)”举出凯撒使用这一方法的例子。空处应承上启下,说明该做法的一种具体应用场景。A选项“Politicians often use this method. (政治家经常使用这种方法。)”中的“politicians”与后文的Julius Caesar身份一致,同时“this method”指代前文的illeism,与前文衔接紧密。
【17题详解】
前文“To the modern ear, illeism can sound a little silly or self-important. (对现代人来说,用第三人称称呼自己听起来可能有点傻或者自以为是。)”指出了人们对用第三人称称呼自己的负面看法,后文“If we are trying to make a difficult decision, viewing ourselves in the third person can help to reduce the emotions that could lead our thinking off track, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem. (如果我们正在尝试做出一个艰难的决定,用第三人称看待自己可以帮助减少那些可能导致我们的思维偏离轨道的情绪,让我们找到更明智的解决方案。)”说明了使用第三人称称呼自己带来的实际好处。空处应起到转折过渡的作用,D选项“Yet research shows illeism brings real thinking benefits. (然而研究表明用第三人称称呼自己确实能带来思维上的好处。)”中“Yet”表转折,“brings real thinking benefits”与前文形成对比,并与后文的具体好处相呼应。
【18题详解】
后文“When making personal choices, we become too caught up in our strong feelings, which cloud our thinking and prevent us from putting our issues in perspective. (在做个人选择时,我们太沉浸于自己的强烈情绪中,这些情绪会蒙蔽我们的思维,阻止我们客观地看待问题。)”解释了情绪如何影响决策。空处应是一个问句,以引出对情绪影响决策原因的探讨。C选项“So why do emotions affect our decisions so much? (那么为什么情绪会对我们的决策产生如此大的影响呢?)”是一个能引起下文的问句,下文正是对这一问题进行了解答。
【19题详解】
前文“By switching to the third person, our descriptions of the situation will start to sound as if we are talking about someone else rather than ourselves. (通过切换到第三人称,我们对情况的描述开始听起来像是在谈论别人而不是我们自己。)”说明了用第三人称称呼自己在语言描述上带来的变化。空处应对这一点进行简短概括总结,B选项“This creates helpful distance from emotions. (这创造了与情绪之间有益的距离。)”中“This”指代前文所描述的心理状态,且“creates helpful distance from emotions”是对前文“talking about someone else”所产生的效果的概括;B选项又与后文“Besides helping us view troubles more objectively, illeism can also encourage us to keep a calm mind when facing daily stresses. (除了帮助我们更客观地看待问题,用第三人称称呼自己还能鼓励我们在面对日常压力时保持冷静的头脑。)”中的“view troubles more objectively”和“keep a calm mind”形成逻辑上的递进。
前文“Next time you face a challenging situation, try referring to yourself as “he” or “she” instead of “I”. (下次你面对挑战性的情况时,试着用“他”或“她”而不是“我”来称呼自己。)”给出了具体的行动建议。G选项“You might be surprised at how much clearer your thinking becomes. (你可能会惊讶于你的思维变得多么清晰。)”是对前文提到的行为可能带来的效果的展望,且带有鼓励和期许的语气,适合作为文章结尾。

【36题详解】
考查时态和语态。句意:会上,辽宁省大连市长山群岛候鸟栖息地获批列入黄渤海候鸟栖息地世界自然遗产扩展项目。主语the Changshan Islands Migratory Bird Habitat与approve为被动关系,根据前文过去时间状语“On July 27, 2026”可知,时态为一般过去时的被动语态,主语为第三人称单数,所以谓语动词为was approved。

in the past few years为现在完成时标志,谓语动词用现在完成时形式,主语为第三人称单数,所以谓语动词为has caused。

Dear Michael,
I hope this e-mail finds you well! I am writing to share a first-aid outreach activity I attended last week.
The activity included a lecture on basic first aid and hands-on practice. We learned CPR on models and how to treat burns, choking, and bleeding. The doctor also showed us how to call for help correctly. It was very practical and well-organized.
I found it truly meaningful. Not only did I gain useful life-saving skills, but I also realized how important it is to stay calm in emergencies. These skills are essential for everyone, and I feel more confident now. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
To save the kids, Brandon realized he had to look for a way out alone.

After nearly an hour of desperate attempts, Brandon finally picked up a faint cell-phone signal.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To save the kids, Brandon realized he had to look for a way out alone. He placed the crying kids against a rock, promising to return soon. Then he struggled up the slippery slope, shouting for help. The cold wind bit into his wet clothes, but he pushed forward. After what felt like an hour, he saw a narrow ridge leading to a lower area. He marked the path with broken branches and hurried back. “Follow me! We can make it!” he shouted. Helping each other, they inched along the ridge and finally reached flatter ground.
After nearly an hour of desperate attempts, Brandon finally picked up a faint cell-phone signal. His hands shaking, he dialed 911 and shouted their location as clearly as possible. He gathered the exhausted kids close, telling them help was on the way. When the rescue team arrived with blankets, tears of relief rolled down his face. Oliver and Ezri hugged their father tightly. Later, Brandon reflected that though the adventure was scary, the lesson of sticking together was more valuable than any fishing trip.
