Water is everywhere, but clean fresh water is rare. At Greenhill Middle School, a group of students began a 'One Drop' project. First, they checked the taps in every classroom and asked the school to fix the dripping ones. Then they made short videos about the water needed to produce a hamburger, a cotton shirt and other daily products. The videos helped students understand that wasting things also means wasting water.
The group did not stop there. They put up signs near the sinks and collected grey water from washing vegetables to water the school garden. After two months, the school used less water than before. More importantly, students began to think before they turned on a tap. The project leader, Jenny, said, 'We cannot make more fresh water, but we can make better use of what we have.'

VIII. Answer the questions (根据短文回答问题) (14 points)
At Riverside Middle School, students used to think that saving water meant only turning off the tap. That changed when their science teacher, Ms Green, showed them a simple calculation. A tap that drips once every second can waste about 4.32 litres of water in one day. One dripping tap may not look serious, but a school with twenty such taps could waste more than 86 litres a day. The students suddenly understood that small problems can become large ones when nobody acts.
The class then visited the Water Science Museum. They learned that about 97 percent of the Earth’s water is salty. Most of the fresh water is locked up in ice or deep underground, and much of the fresh water that people can reach is polluted. The guide also explained that water is used indirectly to make many everyday products. It takes water to produce sugar, hamburgers, cotton shirts and shoes. Therefore, wasting food or clothes also means wasting water, even when we cannot see the water in these products.
After the visit, the students formed a Water Action Team. First, they checked every tap and made a list of repairs. They also put up signs reminding students to use only the water they need. In the school garden, they collected grey water from washing vegetables and used it to water flowers. At home, team members tried shorter showers, ran the dishwasher only when it was full and chose energy-saving washing machines.
Two months later, the school used about fifteen percent less water than before. More importantly, students began to change their habits. They talked with their families about indirect water footprints and encouraged local shops to reduce unnecessary packaging. The team leader, Kevin, said, “We cannot make more fresh water, but we can make better use of what we have. When everyone takes one small step, the result can be surprisingly large.”

Writing (写作)
Proposal for Water Protection Week
Dear fellow students,
As part of our school’s Water Protection Week, I propose that we all take action to save water. Clean fresh water is essential for drinking, farming and personal hygiene, yet only a very small part of the Earth’s water is fresh and available for human use. This means we must be aware of how precious every drop is.
To protect water, I suggest two practical steps. First, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Second, reuse water whenever possible, for example by collecting rainwater to water plants or using leftover water to mop the floor.
Remember: the more we save now, the more water we will have in the future. Let’s start today!
