Unit 3 Diverse Cultures
Welcome to Chinatown!
【Para 1】The Chinatown in San Francisco is the biggest in America, and also the oldest. It is a very popular tourist draw that receives more visitors each year than even the Golden Gate Bridge. The climate is mild all year round, meaning it is always a good time to visit.
【Para 2】Historically, Chinese immigrants settled in the area during the railroad construction and gold rush period. What started as a residential area for Chinese immigrants then turned into a centre for Chinese culture. The majority of residents in Chinatown are still ethnic Chinese, many of whom do not speak English fluently. This allows visitors to experience a real taste of China.
【Para 3】Most of Chinatown was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, but the city and residents rebuilt it, taking care to include lots of Chinese architecture. Traditionally, visitors enter Chinatown through the legendary Dragon Gate, which was built using materials donated from China. Other famous sites include the Tin How Temple and Bank of Canton, to name but a few. Visitors can also spend hours just exploring the interesting sights, smells, and sounds of China.
【Para 4】Portsmouth Square is also a key site, being the centre of Chinatown. It has a long and famous history, with the author Robert Louis Stevenson having spent much time writing there. These days, the square is a great place to see traditional Chinese culture in real life, such as games of Chinese chess, and people practising tai chi. The stores in the Chinatown offer a unique range of souvenirs, goods, and clothing. All kinds of traditional Chinese herbal medicine can be found, too, and there are Chinese tea stores, where visitors can taste and buy varieties of Chinese tea.
【Para 5】But perhaps what many tourists and San Franciscans treasure most about Chinatown is its food. There is Chinese food to suit everyone's taste, with traditional dishes from all over China.
【Para 6】Chinatowns are an important part of the diverse culture of the USA. They allow visitors who have never been to China to experience traditional Chinese culture first hand.
【原文线索】biggest, oldest, receives more visitors, climate is mild
关键在“what started as...then turned into”这个转变——从“居住区”变成“文化中心”。
【原文线索】railroad construction, gold rush, what started as...then turned into, a real taste of China
【识别标志】含年份+表“开始/转变”的动词结构(本文:settled during...period, what started as...turned into)。
【原文线索】destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, rebuilt, Chinese architecture, Dragon Gate, materials donated from China
Portsmouth Square, Chinese chess, tai chi, souvenirs, herbal medicine, Chinese tea stores
see, visit, enter, explore
architecture, gate, temple, site
walk, explore, watch, play
square, store, shop, game
taste, eat, try, enjoy
food, dish, tea, restaurant
【原文线索】treasure most, Chinese food, to suit everyone's taste, traditional dishes from all over China
【原文线索】diverse culture, experience traditional Chinese culture first hand
【识别标志】含 culture/diverse/part of/experience first hand 等抽象词,通常出现在末段。
(Historically/These days/But/also)?
不圈抽象词(culture/experience)——它们在全文出现太多次,圈了等于没圈
2. 时间错位——对选项中的时间状语(after/before/eventually)与原文时间线。
Reading Comprehension
What is the passage mainly about?
A. The history of Chinese immigrants in America.
B. An introduction to San Francisco's Chinatown.
C. The Chinese food in San Francisco.
D. The rebuild of Chinatown after the 1906 earthquake.
Why did many Chinese immigrants settle in San Francisco?
A. To build the Golden Gate Bridge.
B. To escape the 1906 earthquake.
C. To work on the railroad and seek gold.
D. To open Chinese tea stores.
What do we know about the Dragon Gate?
A. It was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1906.
B. It was built with materials donated from China.
C. It is the oldest building in Chinatown.
D. It was designed by Robert Louis Stevenson.
What can be inferred from "many of whom do not speak English fluently"?
A. Chinatown's residents refuse to learn English.
B. Visitors can enjoy a very authentic Chinese atmosphere.
C. Chinatown is isolated from the rest of San Francisco.
D. English is not allowed in Chinatown.
The history of Chinese immigrants in America"——“history of Chinese immigrants”这一主题只落在第②段(历史根基),盖不住建筑地标、市井生活、饮食与意义升华,排除(以偏概全);② 看C选项"The Chinese food in San Francisco"——“food”只对应第⑤段,排除(以偏概全);③ 看D选项"The rebuild of Chinatown after the 1906 earthquake"——“earthquake”只对应第③段,排除(以偏概全);④ B选项"an introduction to San Francisco's Chinatown"——“introduction”覆盖全文每一段的“介绍”功能,正确。
A"To build the Golden Gate Bridge"——原文第①段提到 Golden Gate Bridge 是游客量比较对象,与移民原因无关,错误类型:张冠李戴(对象错位)。 C"To work on the railroad and seek gold"——与原文第②段 during the railroad construction and gold rush period 同义替换,正确。
题干关键词"Dragon Gate",回第③段:"was built using materials donated from China",与B"materials donated from China"原词对应。
1.The author mentions the climate in Paragraph 1 mainly to ______.
A. explain why Chinatown is crowded year-round
B. suggest that Chinatown is worth visiting any time
C. compare it with the Golden Gate Bridge
D. show that San Francisco is warmer than other cities
2.What happened to most of Chinatown in the 1906 earthquake?
A. It was closed to visitors.
B. It became a centre for Chinese culture.
C. Most of it was destroyed but later rebuilt.
D. It was moved to another place.
3.Why does the author say the food is what many people "treasure most"?
A. Because the food is the cheapest in America.
B. Because food is the most direct and enjoyable way to experience a culture.
C. Because only San Francisco has Chinese food.
D. Because visitors are always hungry after sightseeing.
4.The author mentions "Chinese chess" and "tai chi" in Paragraph 4 to show that ______.
A. the square is a place where daily Chinese life is still alive
B. the square is too crowded for visitors
C. Chinese people are better at chess than Americans
D. the square was named after these activities
5.The phrase "a real taste of China" in Paragraph 2 is used to suggest that ______.
A. visitors can buy Chinese tea and food here
B. Chinatown keeps the Chinese way of life so well that it feels authentic
C. the food in Chinatown tastes exactly the same as in China
D. Chinese restaurants are the only attractions
6.What is the author's overall attitude towards San Francisco's Chinatown?
A. Critical.
B. Indifferent.
C. Admiring.
D. Doubtful.
第①段写气候温和“meaning it is always a good time to visit”——作者写气候是为了说明“任何时候都值得去”,B正确。
第③段原句“Most of Chinatown was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, but the city and residents rebuilt it”,C“被毁+重建”即此意。
定位到段:第⑤段开头“But perhaps what many tourists and San Franciscans treasure most about Chinatown is its food”——先看But:后面有 treasure most,递进推进,作者在明确表态:前面看过的建筑、市井都不如“吃”让人难忘。 原文给出两个支撑:一是“to suit everyone's taste”,人人找得到合口味的(普适性);二是“traditional dishes from all over China”,覆盖全中国各地(丰富性)。
4. A。 第④段原句“a great place to see traditional Chinese culture in real life”,举象棋、太极正是“现实生活里的中国文化”——A“日常生活仍鲜活”即此意。 选A。
卡点预判:有学生看到“a real taste of China”就直接选C“the food tastes exactly the same as in China”。 判断依据:看同一句中taste前面的主语和动词——原文说“This allows visitors to experience a real taste of China”,动词是experience(体验),所以taste取“体验”义,非“味觉”义。
Reading Passage
Yellowstone National Park, located mainly in Wyoming, is the first national park in the United States and one of the largest. It is a place where nature's power is on full display, drawing millions of visitors every year.
The park was established in 1872, long before most other protected areas existed. Native American tribes had lived in the region for thousands of years, but the park's creation marked a turning point: for the first time, a government set aside land purely for public enjoyment and preservation.
What makes Yellowstone truly special is its geothermal wonders. The famous Old Faithful geyser erupts on a fairly regular schedule, and colourful hot springs like the Grand Prismatic Spring create scenes found nowhere else on Earth. These features were formed by a massive volcano beneath the park.
Beyond the geysers, Yellowstone is home to an abundance of wildlife. Bison, elk, and grizzly bears roam freely across the valleys. Visitors can hike along hundreds of miles of trails, camp in designated areas, or join guided tours to learn about the ecosystem.
The food in the park's lodges may not be the main attraction, but a warm meal after a day of exploring tastes better than any city restaurant. And for many, the real treasure is the quiet evening by the fire, sharing stories of the day's adventures.
Yellowstone is more than a park; it is a symbol of the American conservation movement. It reminds us that some places are worth protecting not for what we can take from them, but for what they can teach us.
What does the writer mainly tell us about Yellowstone?
A. A neighbourhood that keeps immigrant traditions alive in New York.
B. A national park that protects natural wonders and wildlife.
C. The best place to eat after a long hike.
D. The history of Native American tribes.
What do we know about Old Faithful?
A. It was discovered in 1872.
B. It is a colourful hot spring.
C. It erupts on a fairly regular schedule.
D. It was formed by Native Americans.
What can be inferred about the future of Yellowstone?
A. It will soon lose its wildlife.
B. It will become smaller but still attract visitors on holidays.
C. It will continue to be protected for its educational and natural value.
D. Its geothermal features will stop erupting.
Which paragraph in the passage has the same function as Paragraph 5 in "Welcome to Chinatown!"?
A. Paragraph 2.
B. Paragraph 3.
C. Paragraph 5.
D. Paragraph 6.
题干关键词“Old Faithful”,回第③段原句“The famous Old Faithful geyser erupts on a fairly regular schedule”,C项原词对应,正确。
3. C。 原文末段说“Yellowstone is more than a park; it is a symbol...It reminds us that some places are worth protecting”,可一步推出C项“将继续因其教育和自然价值而被保护”。
黄石公园第⑤段写的是“a warm meal after a day of exploring tastes better...”,同样以食物为切入点写体验,功能对应。

(一)镜头一(第1段)· ________________——“是什么”
请在第①段中圈出这三个最高级形式:________________。
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
对照检查你圈出的词是否齐全,缺的补上:________________________________
(二)镜头二(第2段)· ________________——“从哪来”
关键在“what started as...then turned into”这个转变——从“居住区”变成“文化中心”。
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
请在第②段中圈出表示“开始/转变”的动词结构:________________________________
(三)镜头三(第3段)· ________________——“看什么”
请在第③段中圈出:________________
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
请在第③段中圈出建筑名称:________________________________
(四)镜头四(第4段)· ________________——“逛什么”
把结论写在下面:________________
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
对照检查你圈出的词:________________________________
(五)镜头五(第5段)· ________________——“吃什么”
see, visit, enter, explore
architecture, gate, temple, site
________
walk, explore, watch, play
square, store, shop, game
________
taste, eat, try, enjoy
food, dish, tea, restaurant
________
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
【识别标志】含 food/dishes/taste 及比较级或最高级评价词。请在第⑤段中圈出评价词:________________________________
(六)镜头六(第6段)· ________________——“为什么值得”
【原文线索】我圈出的线索词:________________________________
(Historically/These days/But/also)?
我的答案:________ 答对得1分。
我的答案:________ 答对得1分。
我的答案:________ 答对得2分。
不圈抽象词(culture/experience)——它们在全文出现太多次,圈了等于没圈
2. 时间错位——对选项中的时间状语(after/before/eventually)与原文时间线。

Which paragraph in the passage has the same function as Paragraph 5 in “Welcome to Chinatown!”?
A. Paragraph 2.
B. Paragraph 3.
C. Paragraph 5.
D. Paragraph 6.
