Most people cherish a list filled with things they feel that they just have to experience once in a lifetime. 102-year-old Vera was no exception. Like many others, Vera, living in a nursing home, had a lifelong wish: Getting close to giraffes.
Her dream seemed impossible because she was weak and used a wheelchair. Yet with the care home staff’s help, she finally made it happen — and that is what makes her story so moving.
On an early summer morning, Vera, a resident at the Mill House Care Home in Worcester — a center known for excellent care for people with dementia (痴呆) — was driven to the West Midlands Safari Park (野生动物园) to see the giraffes she had always dreamed of.
This attraction has a motto of “Get Wildly Close!” for its “VIP Experiences”, and that’s just what Vera did as part of its “Giraffe Keeper Experience”, during which Vera was able to get right next to the tall animals and feed them with her own hands.
Charlotte Rees, who is in charge of activities, said Vera’s face lit up with joy when she met the giraffes. The old lady was so moved that she could hardly speak. Charlotte added that it was the whole team’s hard work that made the special day possible.
Interestingly, Vera is far from alone in her love for giraffes. Since 2014, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation has marked June 21— the longest day of the year — as World Giraffe Day to honor the tallest animal on earth. As a non-profit organization, it aims to raise public awareness about the decrease in the giraffe population. Over the past 35 years, their numbers have fallen by nearly 30%, leaving only around 140,000 in the wild today.
More than that, Vera’s story reminds us how much happiness can be brought to the elderly. At her care home, the staff provide person-centered care. They take time to learn about each resident’s interests and wishes, turning them into meaningful experiences. The home believes that personal dreams matter at any age. For Vera, that meant celebrating her 102nd birthday among the giraffes. She made unforgettable memories that day — and her bright smile said everything.
24. What was Vera’s long-held wish?
A. To join a wildlife campaign. B. To approach giraffes.
C. To visit a famous safari park. D. To celebrate her birthday outdoors.
25. How did Vera feel when she met the giraffes?
A. Relieved. B. Regretful. C. Delighted. D. Frightened.
26. What can we infer about the Mill House Care Home?
A. It focuses mainly on medical treatment. B. It values the personal wishes of residents.
C. It organizes trips to safari parks monthly. D. It only accepts individuals with dementia.
27. What does Vera’s story show?
A. Old age should not be a limit to adventures.
B. Wildlife encounters can bring lasting joy.
C. Achieving a dream needs careful preparation.
D. Caring for the aged is more than physical care.
B 25. C 26. B 27. D

Language is more than a communication tool; it’s what shapes our thinking. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis suggests that language structure shapes our world view. If true, then AI tools aren’t just helping us write — they’re controlling our cognitive (认知的) processes.
Research on AI-driven linguistic standardization reveals a paradox (悖论). AI can help people learn languages, expand vocabularies, and even save endangered tongues through low-cost translation tools. Yet mainstream systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot tend to produce well-polished, middle-of-the-road global English, diluting the diversity of dialects and verbal expressions.
As these tools become the default (默认) for a generation, Western style spreads into other cultures. An AI-assisted user in Bangkok or Kinshasa often finds unique cultural metaphors smoothed over by algorithms (算法) preferring professional Western writing style. A poetic Swahili proverb becomes a boring official statement. An indirect Thai request becomes an American-style directive. Over time, this reshapes how humans think about social manners and manage relationships.
We’re witnessing a homogenizing (使同质) effect on collective creativity, with the diversity of creative conceptions dropping, for we all draw ideas from the same algorithm-based well. When everyone uses the same tools, proposes the same frameworks and follows the same logic, outputs rocket toward the highest common standards; average goes mainstream. Innovation requires cognitive diversity — different ways of framing problems, different metaphorical systems, and different logic patterns. Should AI eliminate these differences, the diversity behind breakthrough thinking may no longer serve as a source of creative ideas.
AI is a cognitive tool that can either create dependency or help us walk faster and farther, and discover new landscapes. The outcome depends not on the tool but on those who design, deliver, and use it: us. The danger isn’t the tool itself but the passive consumption of its defaults. Treat AI merely as a source of ready-to-use ideas, and you get empty calories. Treat it like a partner for creative debate, and you sharpen your unique perspectives.
As the last generation remembering the pre-ChatGPT world, we are the bridge. We know what it feels like to struggle for words, sit with blank pages, and develop strange ideas through slow, unassisted reflection. We owe it to the AI Generation to teach them that while algorithms provide structure, humans must provide soul.
28. What does the underlined word “diluting” in paragraph 2 mean?

C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
30. What is an unavoidable result of using AI tools according to the author?
A. The loss of diversity. B. The decline in human intelligence.
C. The boost in critical thinking. D. The disappearance of human-created works.
31. What is the author’s idea regarding using AI?
A. Avoiding employing AI tools. B. Acquiring AI skills effectively.
C. Integrating different AI tools. D. Being the master of AI tools.
A 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第二段“Research on AI-driven linguistic standardization reveals a paradox (悖论). AI can help people learn languages, expand vocabularies, and even save endangered tongues through low-cost translation tools. Yet mainstream systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot tend to produce well-polished, middle-of-the-road global English(关于人工智能驱动的语言标准化研究揭示了一个悖论:人工智能可以通过低成本的翻译工具帮助人们学习语言、扩充词汇,甚至拯救濒危语言。然而,像ChatGPT、Gemini、Claude和Copilot这类主流系统往往生成的是经过打磨、中规中矩的全球通用英语)”可知,ChatGPT、Gemini、Claude、Copilot等这些主流AI软件倾向于使用精炼平庸的全球通用英语,其结果必然是“弱化”了方言与语言表达的丰富多样性。故划线词意思是“削弱”。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“As these tools become the default (默认) for a generation, Western style spreads into other cultures. An AI-assisted user in Bangkok or Kinshasa often finds unique cultural metaphors smoothed over by algorithms (算法) preferring professional Western writing style. A poetic Swahili proverb becomes a boring official statement. An indirect Thai request becomes an American-style directive. Over time, this reshapes how humans think about social manners and manage relationships.(当这些工具成为某一世代的默认选择时,西方风格便渗透进其他文化。
根据第四段“We’re witnessing a homogenizing (使同质) effect on collective creativity, with the diversity of creative conceptions dropping, for we all draw ideas from the same algorithm-based well. When everyone uses the same tools, proposes the same frameworks and follows the same logic, outputs rocket toward the highest common standards; average goes mainstream. Innovation requires cognitive diversity — different ways of framing problems, different metaphorical systems, and different logic patterns. Should AI eliminate these differences, the diversity behind breakthrough thinking may no longer serve as a source of creative ideas.(我们正目睹集体创造力的同质化趋势,创意观念的多样性正在下降,因为我们所有人都从同一基于算法的“水井”中汲取灵感。
根据第六段“As the last generation remembering the pre-ChatGPT world, we are the bridge. We know what it feels like to struggle for words, sit with blank pages, and develop strange ideas through slow, unassisted reflection. We owe it to the AI Generation to teach them that while algorithms provide structure, humans must provide soul.(作为最后一代铭记ChatGPT之前世界的世代,我们是连接的桥梁。我们深知在语言匮乏时如何艰难求词、面对空白纸页,以及通过缓慢而独立的沉思来孕育出奇特的想法。我们有责任向AI一代传授:算法提供结构,但人类必须赋予灵魂)”可知,作者认为人类必须成为AI工具的主人。
D
For thousands of years, human beings have relied on seeds and farmland to grow food. Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy. This is where conservation-focused farming methods, including no-till farming, come in.
Conventional farming involves sowing a crop into ploughed soil. Ploughing kills weeds that compete with crops for resources, such as water. It also buries weeds and dead plant material deep into the ground, where they are then broken down by bacteria and fungi.
But herbicides, which are chemicals sprayed (喷) to kill weeds, became much cheaper to buy from the mid-20th century. This allowed farmers to kill weeds without cultivating the soil. And it paved the way for the no-till farming movement.
Put simply, no-till farming is farming without disturbing the soil. It gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s as more people learnt of its potential benefits. These include: limiting soil erosion, keeping soil moisture (水分), protecting the large holes in the soil, and reducing our reliance on machinery such as disc ploughs and rotary hoes, and the fossil fuels needed to operate them.
Supporters of no-till farming claim it boosts the amount of beneficial organisms and nutrients in the soil. They also say no-till farming improves water quality, reduces the risk of pests and diseases, and increases farmers’ income.
However, there is a darker side to no-till farming. No-till farmers must use much more chemicals to destroy weeds that would otherwise be killed by tilling. Research has linked these chemicals with higher rates of cancer, birth defects, infertility and other medical conditions. In addition, research shows soils that haven’t been ploughed contain about 5% less stored carbon than conventionally-farmed soils. Even if no-till farming is better for the environment, it may not produce the yields farmers need to earn an income. One international meta-analysis found farmers’ crop yields fell by about 5%, one to two years after switching from conventional to no-till practices.
32. What can we learn about ploughing?
A. It hardens the soil. B. It improves soil moisture.
C. It is conservation-focused. D. It is double-edged.
33. What is a result of no-till farming according to the text?
A. Fewer weeds. B. Poorer crop harvests.
C. More soil erosion. D. More stored carbon.
34. What is the author’s attitude to no-till farming?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Favourable. D. Uncaring.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. No-Till Farming: A Better Choice? B. Healthy Soil: The Key to More Produce
C. Modern Farming: Less Work, More Profit? D. Weed Control: A New Challenge for Farmers
D 33. B 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy.(犁地,又称耕作,是指翻动土壤以掩埋杂草、松软土壤并使新鲜养分暴露于地表的过程。然而,长期犁地可能会侵蚀土壤,使其变得不健康)”可知,传统耕作是一把双刃剑。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“One international meta-analysis found farmers’ crop yields fell by about 5%, one to two years after switching from conventional to no-till practices.(一项国际荟萃分析发现,农民在从传统耕作转为免耕方式后,大约一到两年内作物产量下降了约5%)”可知,免耕农业的结果是农作物产量降低。
根据第一段“For thousands of years, human beings have relied on seeds and farmland to grow food. Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy. This is where conservation-focused farming methods, including no-till farming, come in.(数千年来,人类一直依靠种子和农田来种植食物。
We are living in uncertain times, both globally and individually. And we are also facing rapid changes that test our ability to cope (处理). ___36___
The world-renowned psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl is perhaps best known for practicing “freedom of will” in terms of choosing an attitude when experiencing unavoidable or inescapable suffering.
According to Frankl, no matter how desperate our situation in life may be, we always have the ultimate freedom to choose our attitude. ___37___ It can be viewed, moreover, as both the foundation of and the driver behind our ability to cope with and respond to whatever challenges in life come our way.
Frankl relied upon an important belief system, or mindset (心态), to help him sustain an optimistic view even when he was facing extreme hardships in life. ___38___ Instead, we can exercise what he called the “last of the human freedoms”, the ultimate freedom to choose one’s attitude in response to whatever life circumstances we face.
___39___ Whether these situations involve personal or collective challenges, we can still come to understand that we are not simply at the mercy of what life brings; we involve ourselves in life and bring meaning to it. And it is by changing our mindset that we can respond to life. That is to say, we should become “true optimists”.
Being a “true optimist” requires more than just positive thinking. ___40___ We need to be able to visualize the possibilities that may or can result from our choice of attitude and, moreover, be able to feel the emotion and passion behind our choice of attitude that will help us realize such possibilities.
A. Choice is more important than effort.
B. They encounter both joyful and sorrowful times.
C. Positive thoughts aren’t enough in and of themselves.
D. We all struggle with situations in life that are beyond our control.
E. This freedom belongs only to ourselves and cannot be taken away by others.
F. His extraordinary story showed that we don’t have to be prisoners of our thoughts.
G. Fundamentally, our mindset determines whether we can cope with these new circumstances.
G 37. E 38. F 39. D 40. C
根据上文“We are living in uncertain times, both globally and individually. And we are also facing rapid changes that test our ability to cope (处理).(我们正生活在充满不确定的时代,无论是全球还是个人层面。同时,我们也在面对快速变化,这些变化考验着我们的应对能力)”可知,上文指出我们正身处一个充满不确定性的时代,还面临着快速变化。G项“从根本上说,我们的心态决定我们能否应对这些新环境”中的“these new circumstances”呼应上文的“uncertain times”和“rapid changes”,符合语境。
【37题详解】
根据上文“According to Frankl, no matter how desperate our situation in life may be, we always have the ultimate freedom to choose our attitude.(根据弗兰克尔的观点,无论我们的人生处境多么绝望,我们始终拥有选择态度的最终自由)”可知,上文指出我们拥有选择态度的终极自由。 中的“This freedom”指代上文提到的“freedom to choose our attitude”。
根据上文“Frankl relied upon an important belief system, or mindset (心态), to help him sustain an optimistic view even when he was facing extreme hardships in life.(弗兰克尔依靠一种重要的信念体系或心态,帮助他在人生遭遇极端困境时仍能保持乐观的态度)”可知,上文提到弗兰克尔的经历,F项“他那非凡的经历表明,我们不必成为自己思想的囚徒”呼应上文的“when he was facing extreme hardships in life”,且引出下文“Instead, we can exercise what he called the “last of the human freedoms”, the ultimate freedom to choose one’s attitude in response to whatever life circumstances we face.(相反,我们可以行使他所说的“人类最后的自由”,即在面对各种生活境遇时,选择自身态度的终极自由)”。
根据后文“Whether these situations involve personal or collective challenges, we can still come to understand that we are not simply at the mercy of what life brings; we involve ourselves in life and bring meaning to it. And it is by changing our mindset that we can respond to life. That is to say, we should become “true optimists”.(无论这些情况是个人还是集体的挑战,我们仍能意识到,自己并不完全受生活所带来的一切摆布;我们积极参与生活,并赋予其意义。而正是通过改变我们的思维方式,才能回应生活。也就是说,我们应该成为“真正的乐观主义者”)”可知,下句中的“Whether these situations”暗示上句提到了一些处境或情形,D项“我们都会与生活中那些超出我们控制范围的处境作斗争”中的“situations”与下文的“these situations”呼应,符合语境。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Being a “true optimist” requires more than just positive thinking.(做一个“真正的乐观主义者”需要的不仅仅是积极思考)”以及后文“We need to be able to visualize the possibilities that may or can result from our choice of attitude and, moreover, be able to feel the emotion and passion behind our choice of attitude that will help us realize such possibilities.(我们需要能够想象出选择某种态度可能带来的各种可能性,而且还要能感受到这种态度背后的情感与激情,从而帮助我们实现这些可能性)”可知,上句提到成为真正的乐观主义者需要的不仅仅是积极思考,下文阐释成为真正的乐观主义者需要的是什么,这说明积极的想法本身是不够的,故C项“积极想法本身并不足够。”

This topic is highly relevant because AI has already entered almost every aspect of our lives — from study tools to online entertainment. Yet many of us overlook its potential dangers, such as job displacement, privacy concerns, and ethical dilemmas. A speech on this theme can encourage students to think critically about technology’s role in society and explore solutions for a better future with AI. It is both timely and thought-provoking, guaranteeing engaging presentations and meaningful discussions.
I firmly believe this theme will inspire both participants and the audience.
Yours,
Li Hua

The athletic director at a high school in northern Utah believed that involving students with physical or mental challenges in regular classes would benefit the entire school community. To ensure the success of this special plan, he created a mentor (导师) program, pairing each special-needs student with a peer (同伴) for guidance and support.
When looking for mentors, the director immediately thought of the school’s leaders, particularly the football team captain, John. John was a tall, strong, and intensely focused athlete — seemingly the opposite of the patient, caring type ideal for such a role. When the director came to him with the proposal, John turned it down. He insisted that mentoring “wasn’t his thing” and argued that his packed schedule of practices and games left him no time.
However, the athletic director saw a deeper opportunity. He explained to John that true leadership extended far beyond the football field. He emphasized that this experience would enhance personal growth, cultivate patience and empathy — qualities that would eventually make him a better captain and person. After a moment of hesitation, John nodded slowly. “Alright,” he said, though his reluctance (不情愿) was clear.
John was paired with Randy, a cheerful young man with Down syndrome From the very first meeting, John was reluctant and visibly annoyed. He made little effort to hide his discomfort. Sometimes, he pretended not to hear Randy’s friendly questions or enthusiastic comments about the school. Other times, he would make brief, awkward excuses about needing to be somewhere else, hoping Randy would leave him alone. John avoided making eye contact, his body language screaming a desire to be anywhere else. He saw the mentorship as a forced chore, an obstacle to his life, and he couldn’t imagine how this pairing could possibly work out.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
One afternoon, John fell in the hallway. Sharp pain shot through his ankle, making it hard for him to stand up. Just as he struggled to rise, Randy rushed over without delay. He knelt beside John, eyes full of concern. “Are you okay?” he asked. The pure kindness in Randy’s act struck John deeply. Watching Randy’s sincere concern, John felt a wave of shame wash over him. He had treated Randy coldly before, yet Randy showed him genuine kindness without complaint. It suddenly dawned on John what the mentorship really meant.
Encouraged by Randy’s actions, John felt the urge to do more. He stopped regarding the task as a boring chore. Instead, he began to devote time to staying with Randy patiently. He listened attentively to Randy’s enthusiastic thoughts about school and took the initiative to chat with him. Gradually, genuine friendship developed between them. John learned to be more patient and empathetic, exactly the qualities the athletic director had mentioned. He came to realize true leadership lay not only in victories on the football field but also in caring for people around him.

A. Weakening. B. Emphasizing. C. Enhancing. D. Maintaining.
29. How does the author demonstrate Western style’s influence on other cultures?
A. By predicting results. B. By exploring reasons.
