Unit 3 Diverse Cultures
It originated in... / was introduced to...
【测试材料】朗读稿H(见附录)
When did the story of American fried chicken begin?
A. In the 1800s
B. In the 1600s
C. In the 1900s
Where did enslaved people from West Africa first bring their cooking skills?
A. In the South
B. In the North
C. In West Africa
when、how many、in+年份、for+时间
in the 1600s、for fifty years、by the 1900s、at first、later、today
where、from、to、in+地名
from the South to cities、in New York、across the country
地点跟随 from(来处)和 to(去处)。
why、because、so、that's why
because、so、that's why、to do(表目的)、thanks to
The story of American fried chicken is tied to the history of slavery and migration. In the 1600s, enslaved people from West Africa brought their cooking skills...
S(South)、→(to)
∵(because)、∴(so)
WA(West Africa)、CA(California)
chic(chicken)、bar(barbecue)
(After slavery ended...as it moved),只记符号和数字,不写任何完整英文单词。
听到 In this way,可以用 ∴ 表示结果。
thirteen(13)和 thirty(30)、fifteen(15)和 fifty(50)——这两组在听力中容易混淆。
例如 in the 几乎读成一个音,came to America 听感近似 came to Merica(to 与 America 连读)。
When did the story of chow mein start?
A. In the 1860s
B. In the 1960s
C. In the 1600s
Why did Americans love the fried noodles at first?
A. Because they were healthy
B. Because they were quick and cheap
C. Because they were made at home
What does "chow mein" mean in Chinese?
A. Fried noodles
B. Quick meal
听力原文中,came to America 会发生连读,听感近似 came to Merica;in the 会弱读,听感近似 in na。
Signal: because → Key: ____________________
Signal: in the early 1900s → Key: ____________________
Signal: from...to... → Key: ____________________
What did the Irish bring to the New World?
A. The idea of the potato
B. The skill of making sausage
C. The tradition of turkey
Why can an American holiday dinner "taste like the whole world"?
A. Because it is cooked by immigrants
B. Because it mixes traditions from many countries
C. Because the turkey is very large
信号词回溯:每个答案点前是否有对应信号词?——during(时间)、by(时间)、call(定义信号词)。
... originated in / from ...
in + 地点,from + 来源
... was introduced to ... by ...
Over time, ... became ...
Today, it is ...
It was originated from Italy.
正:It originated in Italy.
Pizza originates from Italy. It is introduced to the US. Over time, it becomes popular.
正:Pizza originated in Naples, Italy. It was introduced to the US by Italian immigrants. Over time, it became popular.
Dumplings ______ (起源于) China.
They ______ (被引入) other Asian countries over time.
Today, they ______ (是象征) of family reunion.
______ (随着时间的推移), dumplings ______ (成为) a must-have dish during the Spring Festival.
Over time, hot pot ______ a popular social dining style across the country.
Today, hot pot ______ a symbol of togetherness and cultural fusion.
Hot pot ______ in Chongqing, China, in the mid-17th century.
Later, it ______ to northern China.
Hot pot originated in Chongqing, China, in the mid-17th century. It was introduced to northern China later, where Beijing locals added sesame paste dipping sauce. Over time, hot pot became a popular social dining style across the country. Today, it is not just a meal but a symbol of togetherness and cultural fusion.
Later, it was introduced to other parts of China.
Hot dry noodles originated in Wuhan, Hubei Province. They were created in the early 20th century by a local vendor. Over time, they became a traditional breakfast food for Wuhan locals. Today, hot dry noodles are a symbol of the city's quick-paced lifestyle.

朗读稿H(板块一 撞墙测试)
The story of American fried chicken is tied to the history of slavery and migration. In the 1600s, enslaved people from West Africa brought their cooking skills to the American South. They fried chicken in oil, a method that was quick and needed little fuel. After slavery ended, many Black families moved north and opened small restaurants. In this way, fried chicken traveled from the South to cities across the country, and its recipe changed as it moved.
语音提示:In the 1600s 中的 in the 弱读,重音落在 sixteen 上;from the South to cities 中 from the 弱读,注意力放在 South 和 cities 上。
朗读稿I(板块四 实战:炒面对话)
M: I had the best noodles for lunch today. Do you know how they came to America?
W: No, but I'd love to hear the story.
M: The story starts in the 1860s, when Chinese workers came to California to build the railroad. They missed home-cooked meals, so they opened restaurants near the railway.
W: But how did the noodles get popular with Americans?
M: That took time. At first, only Chinese people ate them. Then Americans tried the fried version, and they loved it because it was quick and cheap.
W: So that's why we call it "chow mein" — it means "fried noodles" in Chinese, right?
M: Exactly. And today, you can find chow mein in almost every American city.
语音提示:came to America 连读,听感近似 came to Merica;in the 1860s 中 in the 弱读,重音落在 eighteen-sixties;because it was 中 it was 弱读,重点听 quick and cheap 的重读。
朗读稿J(板块五 基础层)
(1) The hamburger got its name from the German city of Hamburg, because the sailors there once ate a kind of cooked beef.
(2) In the early 1900s, Italian immigrants opened the first pizza shops in New York.
(3) Tacos traveled from the Southwest to the rest of the country.
朗读稿K(板块五 中档层)
Thanksgiving dinner is a mix of old and new. The turkey came from the Americas, but many side dishes have immigrant roots. The Irish brought the idea of the potato to the New World, and the Germans brought sausage-making skills. Over time, these different traditions came together on one table. That is why an American holiday dinner can taste like the whole world.
朗读稿L(板块五 挑战层)
Soul food is a name for the traditional cooking of Black Americans in the South. It began during the days of slavery, when enslaved cooks made meals from whatever ingredients were available. They used the parts of the pig that others threw away, and grew greens in small gardens. After slavery ended, soul food moved north with the people. By the 1900s, it could be found in cities across the country. Today, many chefs call soul food "the heart of American cooking" because it tells the story of a people's survival.
朗读稿M(课后作业 · 完整巩固练习)
American barbecue has a long and complex history. The word "barbecue" itself may come from a word used by Native Americans for a wooden frame used to cook meat over fire. When enslaved Africans were brought to the American South, they added their own smoking and slow-cooking methods. Later, as people moved west, barbecue changed again. Different regions developed different styles — in Texas, beef is the star, while in the South, pork is more common. So the barbecue you eat today carries stories from Native Americans, Africans, and settlers alike.
语音提示:barbecue itself 发生连读;may come from 中的 from 弱读,重点听后面的 Native Americans;in Texas / in the South 中 in 弱读,重点听地名。

3. 能用 It originated in... / was introduced to...
【测试材料】朗读稿H(见附录)
1. When did the story of American fried chicken begin?
A. In the 1800s
B. In the 1600s
C. In the 1900s
2. Where did enslaved people from West Africa first bring their cooking skills?
A. In the South
B. In the North
C. In West Africa
第2题问地点,题干用 where 对应地点尺,原文说的是带到 the American South,所以选 A。
第2题做错的学生,往往听到了 West Africa 和 American South,但没有用 from...to...

where、from、to、in+地名
from the South to cities、in New York、across the country
地点跟随 from(来处)和 to(去处)。
why、because、so、that's why
because、so、that's why、to do(表目的)、thanks to
When did...? / Where did... come from? / Why did...?
The story of American fried chicken is tied to the history of slavery and migration. In the 1600s, enslaved people from West Africa brought their cooking skills...
1600s WA → S (cooking skills)
after slavery → N (restaurants)

如果听到 In this way,可以用 ∴ 表示结果,但不必强求 because。
thirteen(13)和 thirty(30)、fifteen(15)和 fifty(50)——这两组在听力中容易混淆。
例如 in the 几乎读成一个音,came to America 听感近似 came to Merica(to 与 America 连读)。

A. Because they were healthy
B. Because they were quick and cheap
C. Because they were made at home
3. What does "chow mein" mean in Chinese?
A. Fried noodles
B. Quick meal
C. Chinese food
The story starts in the 1860s 直接给出答案。 B(1960s)和C(1600s)均为干扰项。
原文 they loved it because it was quick and cheap——because 后面的内容即为答案。
对话中 it means fried noodles in Chinese——means 后面的内容即为答案。
听力原文中,came to America 会发生连读,听感近似 came to Merica;in the 会弱读,听感近似 in na。
(1) Signal: because → Key: ____________________
(2) Signal: in the early 1900s → Key: ____________________
(3) Signal: from...to... → Key: ____________________
1900s early → Ital → NY pizza shops
(3) from...to... SW → rest of country
1. What did the Irish bring to the New World?
A. The idea of the potato
B. The skill of making sausage
C. The tradition of turkey
2. Why can an American holiday dinner "taste like the whole world"?
A. Because it is cooked by immigrants
B. Because it mixes traditions from many countries
C. Because the turkey is very large
The Irish brought the idea of the potato to the New World。
That is why an American holiday dinner can taste like the whole world——That is why 是结果信号,原因在紧挨着它的前一句:these different traditions came together on one table。

slavery时期开始;by the 1900s传遍全国
the heart of American cooking,讲述一个民族的生存史
2. 信号词回溯:每个答案点前是否有对应信号词?——during(时间)、by(时间)、call(定义信号词)。
... originated in / from ...
in + 地点,from + 来源
... was introduced to ... by ...
Over time, ... became ...
Today, it is ...
It was originated from Italy.
正:It originated in Italy.
Pizza originates from Italy. It is introduced to the US. Over time, it becomes popular.(全用现在时,时间层次不清)
Dumplings originated in China.
They were introduced to other Asian countries over time.
Today, they are a symbol of family reunion.
Over time, dumplings became a must-have dish during the Spring Festival.
A. (演变) Over time, hot pot ______ a popular social dining style across the country.
B. (现状) Today, hot pot ______ a symbol of togetherness and cultural fusion.
C. (起点) Hot pot ______ in Chongqing, China, in the mid-17th century.
D. (传入) Later, it ______ to northern China.
C: originated in D: was introduced A: became B: is
Hot pot originated in Chongqing, China, in the mid-17th century.
1. Where does the word "barbecue" possibly come from?
A. From a Native American word
B. From an African word
C. From an English word
2. Who added smoking and slow-cooking methods?
A. Enslaved Africans
B. Native Americans
C. Settlers in Texas
3. Which food is more common in the South?
A. Beef
B. Pork
C. Chicken
4. What can we learn from the history of American barbecue?
A. It remains the same as it was.
B. It was only popular in the South.
C. It reflects the mix of different cultures.
A 2. A 3. B 4. C
原文 may come from a word used by Native Americans,题干 come from 与原文同词定位,答案紧跟其后。
原文 when enslaved Africans were brought...they added their own smoking and slow-cooking methods,向前寻找主语 enslaved Africans。
原文 in the South, pork is more common。
A项 remains the same 与文中 barbecue changed again 直接矛盾;B项 only popular in the South 与 as people moved west 和 across the country 不符。
Texas
Native American(原住民)
Enslaved Africans(被奴役的非洲人)
Texas
Beef(牛肉)
Pork(猪肉)
Barbecue reflects the mix of different cultures.
解析:词源信息对应 may come from 信号词;群体贡献对应 added 信号词;地区肉类对应 in Texas / in the South 地点尺;核心结论对应 So 总结信号词。
从朗读稿M中,用红笔圈出所有信号词(如 may come from、added、Later、in Texas、in the South、So 等),并仿照板块二的笔记法,将全文压缩成3个符号短句。
BBQ word ← Native Am
After enslaved → smoking/slow-cooking
Later: Texas=beef, South=pork
∴ BBQ = mix of cultures

朗读稿J(板块五 基础层 · 教师口头示范用,不做完整听力)
(1) The hamburger got its name from the German city of Hamburg, because the sailors there once ate a kind of cooked beef.
(2) In the early 1900s, Italian immigrants opened the first pizza shops in New York.
(3) Tacos traveled from the Southwest to the rest of the country.
朗读稿K(板块五 中档层 · 课堂核心,建议完成)
Thanksgiving dinner is a mix of old and new. The turkey came from the Americas, but many side dishes have immigrant roots. The Irish brought the idea of the potato to the New World, and the Germans brought sausage-making skills. Over time, these different traditions came together on one table. That is why an American holiday dinner can taste like the whole world.
朗读稿L(板块五 挑战层 · 课后选做)
Soul food is a name for the traditional cooking of Black Americans in the South. It began during the days of slavery, when enslaved cooks made meals from whatever ingredients were available. They used the parts of the pig that others threw away, and grew greens in small gardens. After slavery ended, soul food moved north with the people. By the 1900s, it could be found in cities across the country. Today, many chefs call soul food "the heart of American cooking" because it tells the story of a people's survival.
朗读稿M(课后作业 · 完整巩固练习)
第二遍可在 may come from、added、in Texas、in the South、So 等处适当重读或放慢。
语音提示:barbecue itself 发生连读;may come from 中的 from 弱读,重点听后面的 Native Americans;in Texas / in the South 中 in 弱读,重点听地名。
