I.阅读理解
A
As language learners, it’s important to use dictionaries. Paper dictionaries are often great choices for us. They lead us to think in a more exact way. However, with the rapid development of the Internet, many websites and apps offer us information about the language we are learning, so some language learners like online dictionaries better. Here is what some students think of the two kinds of dictionaries.
Lin Tao, 14
I like to look up words in paper dictionaries better. Their explanations are so clear that I can understand them better. I don’t think some online dictionaries are believable. There are many incorrect usages (用法) which can make us confused.
Wang Lan, 15
If we are not good at memorizing English words, we can look up their meanings online very soon. It helps us finish reading English articles more smoothly. If we are good language learners, we can always learn more in a shorter time with an online dictionary. It saves much time.
Meng Hao, 14
The paper dictionary is a great friend for me. Whenever I don’t know the meaning of a new word, I can learn it well by understanding the notes and the example sentences in the paper dictionary.
Tian Xiao, 13
I don’t like carrying a heavy dictionary wherever I go. It’s really convenient to learn a language with the help of an online dictionary. We don’t need to spend much time looking up new words. Using an online dictionary makes a more efficient (高效的) learner.

The Feynman Technique(费曼学习法)was created by a famous physicist named Richard Feynman. It is a way of studying that helps students learn by teaching someone else.
This method has helped many students over the years. It helps you truly understand a topic, not just remember facts. Unlike simply reading textbooks again and again, it makes you take an active part in learning.
If you want to try the Feynman Technique, here’s how to do it:
First, choose one topic you want to learn. It’s better to focus on one thing at a time. If you try to learn too many things, you may not understand any of them well.
Second, try to explain the topic in simple words, as if you were teaching a primary school student. Use easy language and examples. This step helps you break down big ideas into small parts.
Third, look back at your explanation. See if there is any part that is still difficult or unclear. It can be useful to ask a friend or family member to listen and tell you what they don’t understand.
Fourth, improve your explanation based on what you found in Step 3. Make everything as clear as possible.
Finally, repeat all the steps. Doing it once is often not enough. The more you repeat, the better you will understand.
When you feel you’ve learned the topic well, don’t forget to reward yourself. You can eat something you like, listen to music, or just relax!
6. What is the main advantage of the Feynman Technique?
A. It helps students read textbooks faster.
B. It makes students remember facts easily.
C. It helps students truly understand a topic.
D. It allows students to learn without teachers.
7. In Step 2, who should you imagine explaining the topic to?
A. A high school student. B. A famous scientist.
C. A 10-year-old girl. D. A family member.
8. Which of the following is the correct order for the Feynman Technique?
①Pick a topic to learn.
②Improve the weak areas.
③Explain it in the simplest words.
④Repeat the steps until you really learn it.
⑤Find the “imperfect part” of your explanation.
A.①-③-⑤-②-④ B.①-⑤-②-③-④
C.⑤-②-①-③-④ D.③-⑤-②-④-①
9. What does the underlined word “reward” mean in the last paragraph?
A. To forget something. B. To give oneself a prize.

How the Romans influenced English
The Romans lived in Britain for almost 400 years, from 43 CE to 410 CE. Even though they’re not there anymore, we can still see their influence today, not just in old buildings, but also in the language we use. 31
In Roman times, Latin, an ancient language, was spoken in many parts of Britain. The Romans wrote in classical Latin, but they talked in a simpler version (版本). This was the language used among soldiers and in trade. 32 For example, the word “wine” comes from the Latin word “inum”.
33 In the past, the Romans used “castrum” to refer to a city. And this became the ending “-chester” “-caster” or “-cester” in many place names. Manchester is a former Roman fort (堡垒) that was called Mamucium. Other places from the Romans include Lancaster and Leicester.
The Romans introduced the Roman alphabet to English. 34 Old English texts were written in a version that’s not too different from modern English. However, there were some differences, like the symbols “ash” and “eth”. 35
So, even though 1,600 years have passed, the Romans live on.
A. It is similar to what we use today.
B. Also, many place names in the UK come from Latin.
C. Some common English words come from the Romans.
D. In that case, the Romans were as successful as British people.
E. Trade often leads to the spread of words about food and drink.
F. English has also borrowed some words from Chinese language.
G. These symbols can be found in books about how to pronounce words.
