Nikola Tesla was one of the most forward-thinking inventors and engineers in
history.He was born on July 10th,1856,in Smiljan(now in Croatia).As a child,
he could work out difficult mathematical equations()entirely in his mind
without writing them down.Young Tesla was also attracted by thunderstorms and
lightning. He drew inventions like turbines and engines, and even created a tiny
waterwheel by observing the local river.
In 1875,Tesla attended the Technical University of Graz, where he studied
physics,mechanics,and mathematics.During his time there,he became interested
in the Gramme electric generator, which generated direct current(DC,).He
also explored fields like electrical engineering before they were widely taught. In his
second year,Tesla stopped attending lectures and studied independently instead. In
1877,he went to the University of Prague.
In 1882,Tesla worked for the Continental Edison Company in Paris, improving
DC generators and motors. In 1884,he moved to New York and was hired to work
for Thomas Edison. But soon,he left Edison's company and set up his own.He
developed his own alternating current (AC,)motors and transformers and
earned several patents for them.
Tesla's work extended far beyond electric power. He is believed to have been
the first person to send and receive radio signals when he displayed a remote-
controlled boat in 1898.He also patented various basic radio circuits (that
formed the basis for modern radio technology.
Tesla came up with many ideas ahead of his time, like wireless networks,self-
driving vehicles, smart homes, and AI.But his poor business skills meant many of
these technologies could not be fully realized until much later by others. In his final
years,he lived in poverty, depending on the kindness of friends.Despite this, his
inventions have changed the world and continue to influence technology today.
21.What inspired Tesla's creativity?
A.His teachers'requirements.
B.His desire to make money.
C.His experiences of observing nature.
D.His early exposure to electrical experiment.
22.What can be inferred about Tesla from his school education?
A.He had a strong self-learning ability.
B.He was not satisfied with the limited lessons
C.He didn't like the traditional teaching methods.
D.He had a hard time getting along with his classmates.
高二英语试题(Q)第3页(共10页)

Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions
effectively,a skill known as emotional intelligence(EI),do better at school than
their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American
Psychological Association.
"It's not enough to be smart and hardworking.Students must also be able to
understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,"said Carolyn
MacCann, lead author of the study.MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data
from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27
countries, published between 1998 and 2019.The students ranged in age from
primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI
tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower
EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and
personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was that the
association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance,MacCann believes a number
of factors may come into play."Students with higher EI may be better able to
manage negative emotions,such as anxiety,boredom and disappointment,which
can negatively affect academic performance,"she said."Also, these students may
be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships
with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic
success."Finally, the skills required for EI,such as understanding human
motivation and emotion, may overlap with(与…重叠)the skills required to
master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage
in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However,MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify
and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize(给…打上烙印)those students..
Instead, she recommends measures that involve the whole school, including
additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills.
"Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum
would be helpful,as research suggests that training works better when run by
teachers rather than external specialists,"she said."Increasing skills for everyone-
not just those with low EI-would benefit everyone."
24.What surprised the researchers most during MacCann's study?
A.Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B.EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C.College students benefited more from EI than pupils
D.Personality affected academic performance greatly.
高二英语试题(Q)第4页(共10页)
25.What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann's study?
A.High-EI students hardly experience negative emotions.
B.High-EI students seldom develop social relationships.
C.High-EI students tend to easily focus on their study
D.High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
26.What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B.Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C.Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D.Employing emotional specialists to give training to students
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Should EI be taught in school?
B.How can students develop high EI?
C.Students with high EI do better in school
D.Good students do better in managing emotions

Hundreds of sharks are currently hiding in a canal in Florida as they attempt to
escape a poisonous algal bloom()sweeping the state's Gulf Coast, according to
news reports.Four shark species have been hiding in the canal near Longboat Key
in Sarasota County since July 26th.
Experts think the sharks have retreated into the canal to avoid the red tide-an
out-of-control growth of tiny plants called algae that release a powerful neurotoxin
(神经毒素)called brevetoxin-一along the Florida coast,,which has entered the food
chain and damaged the marine ecosystem.
The red tide is a common name for blooms created by algae.Their brevetoxin
can disturb the function of nerve cells.Algal blooms can occur when excess nutrients
enter the ocean through river systems, causing algae to grow and reproduce rapidly
and uncontrollably.Excess nutrients can result from soil erosion ()fertilizer
and animal waste from farms.
This year's red tide is one of the worst ever in Florida. In July, more than 800
tons of dead fish and sea life, including dolphins and manatees(),were washed
up onto the land in Pinellas County along the Gulf Coast. In the past eight days,
very high concentrations of algae have been found around St.Petersburg and
Sarasota.
As the red tide continues,it's dubious how long the sharks may be stuck."If the
conditions outside the canal are really bad, they might be stuck until there's enough
oxygen or there aren't toxins, said Mike Heithaus,a shark expert at Florida
International University."However,if it goes on long enough, they'll run out of
food and energy, and unfortunately, some of them,if not all of them, will die.
高二英语试题(Q)第5页(共10页)
If excess nutrients keep making their way into the oceans, the red tide will
continue to be a problem for sharks and other marine life in the future."Seeing
these kinds of things happen just shows how out of balance the ecosystem has
become,"Heithaus said."We really need to start working hard in Florida on
addressing some of the causes of these blooms.
28.Why are the sharks hiding in the canal near Longboat Key?
A.To avoid enemies.
B.To look for more food.
C.To seek for a safe habitat.
D.To stay away from the red tide
29.Which best explains "dubious"underlined in paragraph 5?
A.Unclear.
B.Unlikely.
C.Unbelievable.
D.Unquestionable.
30.What does Heithaus think of sharks'possible long stay in the canal?
A.It is complex
B.It is concerning.
C.It is common.
D.It is surprising.
31.What can we infer about the red tide?
A.It will last for a long time.
B.It can worsen algal blooms
C.It can be cleaned up quickly.
D.It poses a health risk to many species.

National Skip the Straw Day(国家无吸管日)is held on the fourth Friday in
February every year in America. It is to remind people to give up straws in their
drinks as a way to fight plastic pollution and help the planet.Straws show up on
beaches and in waterways around the world.32
In 2019,volunteers removed nearly a million straws and stirrers()in a
single day's efforts.Since 1986,volunteers have collected nearly 14 million straws
and stirrers from beaches and waterways around the world.33 After all, before
2019,about half a billion straws were used daily in the US-enough to fill 127
school buses, circle the earth 2.5 times, and weigh as much as 1,000 cars.
34 It's an easy first lift that will have a snowball effect on other areas.
When you choose to skip the straw, you begin to think about and realize how so
many other single-use plastics are unnecessary.Suddenly, you start to consider using
reusable shopping bags and coffee cups.35 And along the way, collectively,
you are having an effect, and showing companies that they need to do better.
If you have not yet given up straws, then this is the year to do so.Use your lips
to drink from a glass.Buy a coffee cup that comes with a built-in straw.Explore
straws made from paper, bamboo, and glass.36 But this is one of the easiest
ways to protect the environment.Remember, reducing plastic waste includes more
than simply straws;it also includes packaging and single-use plastics in daily life.
A.That may seem impossibly high.
B.Avoiding straws may not save the world.
C.It is best to carry a few straws and use them whenever needed.
D.Next, you might look for things that are packaged in reusable boxes.
E.Avoiding straws can get people used to the idea of giving up plastics
高二英语试题(Q)第6页(共10页)
F.The collection numbers are a small part of the number of straws actually being
used
G.They are among the top 10 most common things found during the coastal cleanup
event.

Dear teacher,
I'm writing to share my views on the upcoming Charlorte's Web reading class.
To be honest,I think it may not be suitable for us senior two students. We are facing heavy study pressure and
tight study.schedules.Taking extra reading classes will take up much of our time for reviewing lessons and doing
exercises. What's more, some original English expressions are difficult to understand, which may make us feel
frustrated.
I suggest choosing shorter and easier articles for reading training to balance our study and reading practice
Yours sincerely,
