Have you heard of a staycation? It is a vacation spent at your home or somewhere in your hometown. It’s the combination (组合) of the words “stay” and “vacation”. In recent years, it has become a popular trend. The word has even been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
This summer my family and I had a staycation in Shanghai. We didn’t go anywhere far away, but we still made two “accomplishments (成就)”.
The first thing I did was to get better at ping-pong. I went to a two-week-long ping-pong camp. Every morning, I had to get up at 6 a.m. and arrive at school for intensive (集中的) training that lasted for six hours. Our coach was Zhou Miaogen, who used to train many famous world winners. He taught us many useful skills. I made many new friends as well.
Also, we went to a nearby island called Shengsi in the East China Sea. We stayed in wooden (木制的) houses. There was a beach with clear blue waters and golden sand right outside our window. The seafood there was very delicious. Every night, we walked along the beach. We also rented a jet ski (喷气式水艇) to ride in the sea. It was really exciting, especially when the waves dragged (拖动) us farther away from the shore (海岸).

All over the world, temperatures are going up at night because of global warming (全球变暖). A study found that when the temperature at night is over 30℃, the length of nightly sleep becomes shorter by over 14 minutes. This may not seem like a lot at first, but it means that each person loses 44 hours of sleep every year.
When people are short of sleep, their immune systems (免疫系统) become weak. They get sick and forgetful, and there is even a higher risk (风险) of serious illnesses like cancer. Not getting enough sleep at night can also create an unsafe environment during the day. Those who drive to work may cause more accidents if they are not well rested.
Anyway, women, the elderly, and the poor are most influenced (影响) by rising (上升的) temperatures. Women’s bodies cool quicker in the evening than men’s when going to sleep, so they feel hot sooner. Older people usually sleep less because they have poor body temperature control, so sleeping in high temperatures is a real problem. In poor areas, people don’t have enough money to buy fans or air conditioners (空调). So they don’t have any way to lower the temperatures in their bedroom.
As the global warming trend is continuing, we may lose more sleep time in the future. So protecting the environment is protecting ourselves.

After my staycation, I now understand why it is so popular. Sometimes, we don’t need to go far away. As long as you make plans, you can still relax and have fun. Why not try it out?

9. How does the writer introduce the topic at the beginning of the text?
A. By listing facts. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By explaining differences.
10. The second paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A. the best time of going to sleep B. different ways of keeping healthy
C. bad results of not having enough sleep D. the importance of staying awake during the day
11. How is the text organized?
A. B. C. D.
12. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Nighttime temperatures are rising.
B. Global warming could mean less sleep for people.
C. What can we do about global warming?
D. Who will be most influenced by global warming?

Many families live busy lives. Every week, the children have homework and club activities. The parents are busy, too. They work, do the housework, cook meals and drive their children to take part in activities. Some families do not have time to eat meals together more than once a week. Our community decided that it was time to take a break.
After three weeks of planning, we took one night off. We called it “Family Night”. It was a night for families to spend time together. Clubs stopped their activities, and teachers did not give homework.
On “Family Night”, we decided to turn off our televisions. We also decided not to answer the phone. Answering machines said, “Please call back tomorrow.” Many families ordered hamburgers and other food from stores or restaurants because they didn’t want to spend time cooking.
There were lots of activities. Storytelling and card games were the most popular. These activities gave families the chance (机会) to spend time together. Children and parents weren’t so busy, and children didn’t spend so much time playing computer games or watching TV. On “Family Night” families relaxed and spent the evening together. We hope to have more “Family Nights”.
