In a village near a desert lived a young and successful businessman named James. Though he was rich, he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges.
One day, a wise man came to the village with 100 camels(骆驼). It's said he could solve any problem. James went to see him and said,“I'm very unhappy with my life. I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.”
The old man smiled,“I' ll give you an answer tomorrow morning. But first, can you do a small thing for me?” James agreed. The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before he could go to sleep.
The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly,“I didn't sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That's true. As you saw last night, some camels sat down by themselves. Some needed you to help them, and many still didn't sit even after you tried hard. If you came back later, you would find that some camels, though they didn't sit at first, finally sat down on their own,” the old man said.James nodded.
The old man continued,“Problems are just like camels—— some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved when you put in some effort, and some do not get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. At the right time, these problems themselves will come to an end,” he smiled.
Looking at the group of camels, James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life's challenges.

Artificial intelligence(AI) is very powerful and useful in many areas, but it cannot predict winning lottery(彩票) numbers, according to a recent report made by China Sports Lottery and the Guangdong Sports Lottery Centre. The report explained that the winning numbers are chosen by chance, and no technology, including AI, can predict them. It called on lottery ticket buyers not to believe in so-called AI prediction tools.
Following the popularity of DeepSeek, a free AI-powered chat robot, many types of lottery number prediction services that make use of AI technology have appeared. According to an online post, a man bought lottery tickets using the numbers provided by AI service providers for 19 days, but his losses increased each time.
Anyone promising to increase the chances of winning through AI technology is fraudulent. Posts about winning the lottery through AI technology are mostly created by AI software providers, serving as marketing advertisements to attract users to download the software, the report said. Some software platforms offer free trial periods. If users win by accident, they try to advise them to pay for better predictions. However, these predictions are not real.
AI technologies have performed excellently in fields like healthcare and mathematics, as there are models.
However, lottery draws(抽奖) are events with no models, making them unpredictable. The official lottery drawing process depends on the use of physical drawing machines, where the movement of each ball is influenced by airflow and other factors, making it completely unpredictable and uncontrollable. Also, past lottery results do not influence future results. As a result, even with powerful AI tools like DeepSeek, it's impossible to predict the next winning numbers.

( )9. Why do software platforms offer free trial periods?
A. To test their software. B. To help people win the lottery.
C. To cheat users out of money. D. To save money for lottery buyers.
( )10. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Why AI tools fail to make the prediction.
B. How the winning numbers are decided.
C. Whether there are patterns in lottery draws.
D. What influences the lottery drawing process.

When you look at a traditional Chinese building, the roof is often the first thing that catches your eye. It is not just for keeping rain out, but also shows history, culture and social position. Different roof styles developed in different dynasties, each with special features and uses.
The Wudian roof first appeared in the Shang and Zhou dynasties and later became the most honoured roof style. It has four sloping(倾斜的) sides and five ridges, which stands for the highest power. This grand style was only used for the most important buildings, such as the main halls of the Forbidden City.
As roof designs grew more beautiful in the Han Dynasty, the Xuanshan roof prevailed. It became the most common style at that time. It has two sloping sides, and its roof edges(边) go beyond the walls. It was also during this time that roof corners began to turn up, making the heavy structure look lighter and more pleasing.
A golden age of Chinese building, the Tang Dynasty saw the rise of the Xieshan roof. It has nine ridges and joins two shapes—— the top part looks like a two-sided roof, while the bottom part has four sides. This style was used for important buildings like palaces' side halls and main temples.
By the Ming Dynasty, the Yingshan roof was widely used by ordinary families across the country because it was simple and practical. It also has two sloping sides, but its side walls rise higher than the roof, covering it at both ends and making the building safer from fire.
Besides these, there is the Zanjian roof, which is different from the others. It has no flat ridge.Instead, all sides meet at a point at the top. This style is often seen in gardens and famous buildings like the Temple of Heaven.
Today, these ancient roofs still stand across China. They remind us that building is never just about use. A roof can show power, belief, and beauty all at once. Each roof carries the mark of its time and tells a small piece of China's long story.
( )11. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. The roof of a traditional Chinese building is very beautiful.
B. There are many kinds of roof styles in modern Chinese buildings.
C. The roof is important and carries rich meanings besides its basic use.
D. The roof can tell us the social position of the people who built the house.
( )12. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The Xieshan roof is usually seen in gardens.
B. The Xuanshan roof was used in the Forbidden City.
C. The Yingshan roof can keep houses safer from fire.
D. The Wudian roof was widely used for common people's houses.
