At 81, Kathryn Mount refuses to let age define what she can or cannot do. Her goal? To skydive with every grandchild!
Recently she jumped out of a plane for her grandson Bear’s 18-year-old birthday. This is not her first skydiving experience. Back in 2018, she jumped with her granddaughter Ziggy. Bear was only ten then and was too young for the sport. He felt greatly disappointed. To make up for that disappointment, Kathryn secretly planned this jump as Bear’s 18th birthday surprise. She told the family they were heading to a water park, and Bear knew nothing about the real plan until they pulled up at the skydiving centre.
Jumping out of a plane as an 81-year-old comes with a list of safety checks that must be done prior to the jump, resulting in the jump initially having to be postponed due to bad weather. Kathryn and Bear finally made the jump from 15,000 feet over the Wollongong coast, freefalling for about 1 minute before enjoying a more relaxed 5-7 minutes under the parachute (降落伞). “I don’t think we were nervous about it. It’s exciting and thrilling and you have to put a lot of trust into it.” Kathryn said, “For me, it’s not scary ... I don’t even think the first time I was scared.”
Kathryn’s appetite for adventure didn’t start with her grandchildren. Her interest in adventure started long before. She tried paragliding (滑翔) in three foreign countries. She once travelled to India to teach women sewing skills. After retirement, she devotes herself to painting and public-welfare work. This collection of passions is a reflection of Kathryn’s view on life as something that unfolds naturally rather than something to be planned out strictly. Kathryn will continue her skydiving plan with other grandchildren. She even dreams of breaking the company’s record for its oldest jumper. Age, in her opinion, should never become a barrier to following one’s passion.
4. Why did Kathryn arrange the skydiving for Bear?
A. To strengthen his determination. B. To inspire him to love extreme sports.
C. To encourage him to break the record. D. To celebrate his coming-of-age birthday.
5. What can we infer about the jump from paragraph 3?
A. The jump was delayed but not cancelled. B. The jump took place over a mountain area.
C. The freefall lasted longer than the parachute ride. D. Kathryn was more scared than excited in the jump.
6. Which word can best describe Kathryn?
A. Cautious. B. Conservative. C. Open-minded. D. Warm-hearted.
7. What does the author try to convey in the passage?
A. Passion for adventure isn’t limited by age. B. Safety checks matter for elderly skydivers.
C. The elderly should join more social activities. D. Skydiving is popular among Australian seniors.

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of Ficus wakefieldii, Ficus natalensis and Ficus glumosa in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate (草酸钙). Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙). The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
8. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They absorb more CO2. B. They release oxygen quickly.
C. They help turn CO2 into solids. D. They live in harmony with bacteria.
9. What is the core challenge before applying the discovery globally?
A. Assessing the cost of the process.
B. Understanding the impact on soil.
C. Ensuring the crucial role of biodiversity preservation.
D. Measuring the precise amount of CO2 transformation.
10. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The seriousness of climate change. B. The method of green development.
C. The prospect of scientific approaches. D. The role of nature in climate solutions.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Kenyan Trees: A Natural Carbon Store B. Kenyan Trees: A Hidden Carbon Source
C. Trees Planting: A Key to Ecological Balance D. Trees Planting: A Defensive Strategy in Nature
D
Take a flashlight — the one on your phone will do — turn it on and place your fingertip over the bulb (灯泡). The red light you see comes from red-light photons bouncing inside your finger, rather than blood. This small test reveals a striking biological discovery: light is a vital source of energy for all living creatures, including human beings.
Since the early 2000s, two energy-saving technologies have taken over our daily lives. The first is the LED light, which has replaced most traditional lights. The second is heat-reflective glass, designed to keep buildings cool or warm. Together, these technologies dramatically narrowed the range of light we are exposed to indoors, where many people spend up to 90% of their time. According to neuroscientist Glen Jeffery at University College London, we have lost about 95% of the long wavelengths from red and infra-red (IR) light that our ancestors were naturally bathed in, both outdoors and indoors.
Why does this matter? In the late 1980s, Soviet biophysicist Tiina Karu discovered that red and near-IR light boosted energy production by speeding up mitochondria (线粒体). Later research confirmed that red light helps lower blood sugar, improves cognitive function, and may even protect against diseases like dementia and cancer. However, blue light from screens and LEDs slows down this energy-generating process. Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st-century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.
The good news is that the solution is simple. Exposure to daylight or even a dimmed traditional bulb can help restore red-light levels. Although red-light therapy (疗法) devices exist, some are too strong and may cause physical discomfort. Jeffery suggests placing a small old-style lamp on your desk, as even a very dim one emits plenty of IR. He also calls on building designers to rethink lighting, pointing out that healthier lighting need not sacrifice energy efficiency. Some London hospitals have already set up outdoor areas to give patients and staff more access to natural light.
“You can live your life without red light,” says Jeffery, “but you cannot live healthily without it.”
12. Why does the author mention the fingertip-flashlight experiment in paragraph 1?
A. To prove blood reflects red light. B. To introduce light as an energy source.
C. To show phones can produce red light. D. To compare LED and traditional light brightness.
13. What has mainly caused the loss of long-wavelength light in modern life?
A. The wide use of screen-produced blue light. B. The reduction of time people spend outdoors.
C. The invention of energy-saving lighting devices. D. The popularity of LEDs and heat-reflective glass.
14. What does the underlined word “exacerbates” mean?
A. Improves. B. Worsens. C. Relieves. D. Prevents.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To promote red-light therapy devices. B. To warn against overuse of LED lighting.
C. To explain a health risk and suggest solutions. D. To compare natural and artificial light sources.

One warm late-spring morning in Seward, Alaska, 51-year-old Kell and his wife Joanna started a quiet walk to Godwin Glacier. The couple loved outdoor trips. They wanted to get away from busy holiday crowds and enjoy Alaska’s wild natural beauty. The weather was nice, about 10℃. They brought only small supplies, ready for an easy day by Godwin Creek, which was shaped by the glacier. Neither knew a terrible danger was just about to happen.
As they walked on, the creek (小溪) got smaller and the water ran faster. To find a safe place to cross, the two decided to go separate ways. Kell climbed up to the rocky cliff, careful of the fast water below. Joanna walked down the creek to check a crossing place she saw before. A few seconds later, a loud, terrible noise broke the quiet. Rocks and big stones fell down the hill in a strong landslide, right where Kell had been standing just seconds ago.
Joanna felt very scared and ran back quickly. Every step on the rough rocks felt slow and hard. She called Kell’s name again and again, but heard no answer above the loud water and falling rocks. When she finally saw him by the creek, her heart sank. Only Kell’s top body was above water. A huge half-moon rock pressed his body and left leg. His face was just above the cold water.
Luckily, Kell was still fully awake. His left leg was bent in a scary way, but he didn’t feel sharp pain. He could still move his arms and right leg. He didn’t know the big rock was holding him, and told Joanna to push the rock away. The worried wife bent down and tried hard to lift the big stone. Kell held himself up and pushed from below. Together, they moved it a little, but the heavy rock would not move more.

文章第二段“These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate (草酸钙). Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙). The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends.(这些树木也分布于多个国家,研究发现它们能够将二氧化碳转化为草酸钙。随后,树木及其周围土壤中的细菌进一步将其转化为碳酸钙。这一独特机制确保了二氧化碳在树木生命结束后仍能以固态形式长期保存)”指出,这些树能将CO₂转化为草酸钙,再进一步转化为碳酸钙,从而以固体形式长期储存碳。选项C“它们帮助将CO₂变成固体”符合文意。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。第三段中“The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally.(首要问题在于确定这些树木在其生命周期内可转化的二氧化碳的确切数量。若缺乏准确的数据,就难以全面评估该方法在全球范围内的实际影响)”明确指出“首要挑战是确定这些树在其生命周期中能转化多少CO₂”,即精确测量转化量。选项D对应此意。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后两段“This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.(肯尼亚的这一发现促使我们重新思考自然过程在应对环境挑战方面的潜力。尽管技术手段对解决气候变化至关重要,但融合自然方法则提供了一种另类途径。这些树木的独特能力为探索提供了充满希望的方向)”和“The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?(应对气候变化的旅程充满复杂性。随着我们深入理解像肯尼亚这些树木这样的自然现象,我们必须自问:我们如何最大限度地发挥自然的力量,为子孙后代创造可持续的未来?)”可知,作者探讨了自然过程在应对气候变化中的潜力,并强调整合自然方法作为一种替代途径,问题聚焦于如何利用自然力量创造可持续未来。因此,作者在探索“自然在气候解决方案中的作用”,对应选项D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第二段中“These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate (草酸钙). Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙). The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends.(这些树木也分布于多个国家,研究发现它们能够将二氧化碳转化为草酸钙。随后,树木及其周围土壤中的细菌进一步将其转化为碳酸钙。这一独特机制确保了二氧化碳在树木生命结束后仍能以固态形式长期保存)”可知,文章核心是介绍肯尼亚发现的三种树能将CO₂转化为固体碳酸钙,从而长期储存碳,是一种天然碳储存方式。选项A“肯尼亚树:天然碳储存库”准确概括了主旨。
B 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第一段中的“Take a flashlight — the one on your phone will do — turn it on and place your fingertip over the bulb (灯泡). The red light you see comes from red-light photons bouncing inside your finger, rather than blood. This small test reveals a striking biological discovery: light is a vital source of energy for all living creatures, including human beings.(拿一个手电筒 —— 手机自带的手电筒就可以 —— 打开它,把指尖贴在光源处。你所看到的红光,来自红光光子在手指内部来回反射,而非血液。这个小实验揭示了一个惊人的生物学发现:光是所有生物包括人类至关重要的能量来源。)”可知,作者提及手电筒指尖实验,目的是引出“光作为能量来源”这一话题。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The first is the LED light, which has replaced most traditional lights. The second is heat‑reflective glass, designed to keep buildings cool or warm. Together, these technologies dramatically narrowed the range of light we are exposed to indoors…we have lost about 95% of the long wavelengths from red and infra‑red (IR) light…(第一项是取代大部分传统灯具的LED灯,第二项是用于调节建筑温度的热反射玻璃。这两项技术大幅缩小我们室内接触到的光的范围……我们失去大约95%的红光和红外长波光线。)”可知,LED灯和热反射玻璃的普及造成现代生活长波光线缺失。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st‑century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.(杰弗里把红光缺失比作“21世纪坏血病”——一种持续加重的匮乏状态,会exacerbates现代各类健康问题。)”
根据第三段中的“Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st‑century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.(杰弗里把红光缺失比作“21世纪坏血病”,一种逐步加剧的匮乏,会加重现代健康问题。)” 以及第四段中的“The good news is that the solution is simple. Exposure to daylight or even a dimmed traditional bulb can help restore red‑light levels.(好消息是解决办法很简单。接触日光,甚至调暗的传统灯泡,都有助于恢复红光水平。)” 可知,文章一方面介绍缺少红光带来的健康风险,另一方面给出可行的解决途径。C 项“To explain a health risk and suggest solutions(阐释一种健康风险并给出解决办法)” 概括全文写作目的。

One possible version
Trapped in the wild with no cellphone signal, Joanna faced a hard choice. She tried to put wood under the big rock to make it lighter. Kell shook badly in the icy glacial water, and his body soon got very cold. He told her to go get help, gave her his phone, and asked her to walk far enough to get a signal. Though she was afraid to leave her hurt husband, Joanna knew this was their only way to live. She ran 250 meters around the creek bend and finally got a good signal to call the firefighters. She spoke fast and clearly to the worker on the phone, asking for help. Then she returned to her husband and waited worriedly for the firefighters.
Shortly after receiving the call, professional firefighters arrived. They looked carefully and decided not to lift the rock fast, to stop hurting Kell more. Rescuers used air bags to hold the big rock steady. Then four strong men lifted it a little. While they held it up, others took away small rocks that pressed Kell’s leg. Tired Joanna could not pull him out alone, so a fireman pulled Kell to safety. Everyone was surprised: Kell’s leg was hardly hurt. The team quickly warmed Kell with dry clothes and warm blankets. He was flown to a local hospital and left after two nights of checks, with only small cuts and bruises. Against all bad chances, Kell lived through the terrible landslide.
