4 Bullet Train Journeys across China
China is blazing a new future with its record-breaking bullet trains. These trains make crossing the country’s huge landmass accessible on a shorter visit.
Silk Road
Time:8 hours| Distance:690 miles
Spanning Gansu’s northwest deserts, this high-speed journey traces ancient camel trails once used to trade silk and philosophy. Today, you can make the trip in days, exploring grand Buddha statues, night markets, temples, and sweeping landscapes. From Lanzhou, the train sails through the Hexi Corridor, passing Zhangye and Jiayuguan (Great Wall’s western end) — before reaching Dunhuang, home to giant dunes and the Mogao Caves, a priceless Buddhist art treasury.
Tibetan Plateau
Time: 20 hours| Distance:1,215 miles
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, technically the only non-high-speed train here, is an engineering wonder built on permafrost (冻土) across extreme terrain. Departing Xining, this overnight journey passes Qinghai Lake — China’ s largest — before crossing the Tibetan Plateau into the Himalayas, arriving next morning in Lhasa.
Wintery Northeast
Time: 4.5 hours| Distance: 771 miles
This high-speed route shoots northeast from Beijing through the vast plains of Dongbei. You’ ll pass through Shenyang before reaching Harbin, a city with onion-domed churches, frozen rivers, and a mix of cultures including Chinese, Russian, Mongolian, etc. Time your journey for January/ February to catch the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, where ice palaces glow with neon.
Skyscrapers to Coast
Time:4 hours| Distance:351 miles
Board a bullet train in Hong Kong coastward. The route zips past fishing villages and river estuaries to Xiamen — a port city with 1850s architecture and sea views. Detour inland to explore Fujian’ s Tulou, a UNESCO site of circular Hakka clan houses made of packed earth and timber, some over 700 years old.
16. What can you do in Silk Road?
A. Do some silk trade. B. Visit Buddhist temples.
C. Explore ancient markets. D. View the whole Great Wall.
17. Which journey covers the longest distance?
A. Silk Road. B. Tibetan Plateau.
C. Wintery Northeast. D. Skyscrapers to Coast.
18. What do the last two journeys have in common?

Emma woke up with a start. Today was the day her class was taking a special trip to the new city museum, and she needed her permission slip signed. She scrambled out of bed and rushed into the kitchen, where the delicious smell of pancakes was already filling the air.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” her dad smiled, flipping a pancake onto a plate. “Are you excited for the trip?”
Emma stopped dead in her tracks. Her heart sank, and the smile vanished from her face. “Dad,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I can’t find my permission slip anywhere. I thought I put it in my blue folder last night, but it’s not there.”
Her dad placed his spatula down and gave her a warm, reassuring look. “Don’t panic, kiddo. Let’s retrace your steps. Where did you do your homework yesterday?”
Emma thought hard. “At the kitchen table, and then I took my folder to the living room to show Mom.”
“Well, let’s look in the living room first,” her dad suggested.
The two of them walked into the living room. Emma began searching the couch cushions while her dad checked the coffee table. Just as she was about to give up, she spotted the corner of a bright blue paper sticking out from underneath the sofa pillows. With a gasp of excitement, she dove for it. It was the permission slip, completely safe and perfectly signed by her mother!
Emma threw her arms around her dad’s waist, breathing a huge sigh of relief. She quickly put the paper into her backpack and sprinted back into the kitchen to finish her breakfast. She was finally ready for a fantastic day at the museum.

C
It’s a classic complaint in relationships, especially romantic ones: “She said she was okay with me forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related? ”
The answer is YES. Communication is more than words. It’s how those words are said, the tone, the order, even the choice of a particular word. It’s multi-dimensional, as explored by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber in Meaning and Relevance. Consider the following example: Peter got angry and Mary left; Mary left and Peter got angry. Though identical in words, their meanings differ completely. The first one may have us thinking: Wow, Peter must get angry often if Mary leaves. The second sentence suggests that Peter wants more from Mary. Same words — a totally different context.
Human language is not a code (编码). True codes have a one-to-one relationship with meaning. One sound, one definition. This is what we see with animals. Wilson and Sperber explain that “coded communication works best when emitter (发出者) and receiver share exactly the same code. ” Not so for humans. We communicate more than the definitions of our words would suggest. This is inferential communication, and it means that we understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.
Irony (反语) is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words. It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party, “That was fun”, she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying “ironically” that the party was boring. Rather, she is expressing an emotion. Three words replace paragraphs, showcasing language’s efficiency.
Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two unique abilities of humans: language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer meaning.
23. What does the complaint in Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. The importance of remembering important moments.
B. The inconsistency between words and meaning.
C. The necessity of indirect communication.
D. The possibility of argument in a couple's life.
24. What may make human language different from true codes?
A. The context included in understanding meanings.
B. The definitions made by words in communication.
C. The coded communication between emitter and receiver.
D. The one-to-one relationship between word and meaning.
25. How does Mary’s statement “That was fun” show about irony?
A. It uses fewer words to save time. B. It uses a long sentence to show simple feelings.
C. It needs detailed explanations to make sense. D. It uses fewer words for complex meanings.
26. What does the author suggest in communication?
A. Focusing on the opposite. B. Taking language literally.
C. Reading beyond the words. D. Avoiding using ironic tones.
【答案】23. B 24. A 25. D 26. C
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍人类语言交流特点及反语在交流中的作用。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“She said she was okay with me forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related?(她说她不介意我忘记她的生日!那她为什么在厨房里摔盘子呢?这两件事有关系吗?)”以及第二段“Communication is more than words. It’s how those words are said, the tone, the order, even the choice of a particular word.(沟通不仅仅是言语,还包括说话的方式、语调、顺序,甚至某个词语的选择)”可推知,第一段的抱怨主要表明了言语和意思之间的不一致。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Human language is not a code (编码). This is inferential communication, and it means that we understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.(人类语言并非一种编码。
根据倒数第二段“Irony (反语) is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words. It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party, “That was fun”, she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying “ironically” that the party was boring. Rather, she is expressing an emotion.
根据最后一段“Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two unique abilities of humans: language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer meaning.(威尔逊和斯佩伯得出结论:人类语言之所以发展并变得如此强大,是因为人类具备两种独特的能力:语言本身,以及解读他人心理状态的能力。我们会在听到的词语中寻找语境,并且应当非常擅长吸收这些语境以推断其含义)”可推知,作者认为在交流中应该理解话语背后的意思,也就是不仅仅局限于字面意思。

When scientists look for an earthquake’s cause, their search often starts underground. As centuries of earthquake researches have made clear, it’s the crash of makeup plates and the movement of underground faults and cracks that mainly lead to an earthquake. But MIT scientists have now found that certain weather events may also play a role in setting off some quakes.
In a study appearing recently in Science Advances, the researchers report that happenings of heavy snowfall and rain likely led to a series of earthquakes over the past several years in northern Japan. The study is the first to show that climate conditions could cause some quakes.
“We see that snowfall and other environmental loading at the surface affect the stress state underground, and the timing of heavy rainfall events is well-connected with the start of this earthquake crowds,” says study author William Frank, an assistant professor in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. “So, climate obviously has an effect on the response of the solid earth, and part of that response is earthquakes.”
The new study focuses on a series of ongoing earthquakes in Japan’s Noto Peninsula. The team discovered that earthquake activity in the area is surprisingly in step with certain changes in underground pressure, and that those changes are influenced by seasonal patterns of snowfall and rainfall. The scientists doubt that this new connection between quakes and climate may not be unique to Japan and could play a role in shaking up other parts of the world. Looking to the future, they predict that the climate’s influence on earthquakes could be more pronounced with global warming.
“If we’re going into a climate that’s changing, with more extreme rainfall events, and we expect a redistribution of water in the atmosphere, oceans, and continents, that will change how the Earth’s crust (地壳) is loaded,” Frank adds. “That will have an effect for sure, and it’s a connection we could further explore.”
27. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A. Introduce the main topic. B. Describe a scientific experiment.
C. Present different opinions on earthquakes. D. Explain the causes of earthquakes in detail.
28. What is the finding of the study?
A. Quakes will grow in number. B. Global warming will bring more snow.
C. Heavy rains predict major quakes. D. Certain weather events may lead to some quakes.
29. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. The research results will be applied immediately.
B. The influence of climate on earthquakes will decrease.
C. There will be no earthquakes caused by underground faults.
D. More research on the climate-earthquake link will be conducted.
30. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Secret of Earthquakes. B. How to Predict Earthquakes.
C. Climate and Earthquakes: A New Link. D. The Effects of Global Warming on Earthquakes.
【答案】27. A 28. D 29. D 30. C
【解析】

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。作者介绍了如何交朋友,并就维持友谊给出了几点建议。
【31题详解】
根据上文“ But there are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our schools or jobs. Such changes often leave us without a friend.(但是在我们的生活中也有这样的时候,比如我们最近搬到了一个新的城镇,或者换了学校或工作。这样的变化常常使我们失去朋友)”可知,有时生活中的变化会使我们失去朋友。空格处应该描述失去朋友后应该再交朋友的情况,结合下文“But for many of us, the process (过程) is difficult. There are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.(但对我们很多人来说,这个过程是困难的。这里有一些关于如何交朋友和维持友谊的有用建议。)”可知,空格处需要解释“这个过程”是什么,且结合But可知空格处叙述内容与“困难的”相反,E选项“对有些人来说,结交新朋友很容易”符合题意。故选E。
【32题详解】
根据上文“Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends.(开始交谈是结交新朋友的第二重要步骤)”提到启动对话是交朋友的第二重要步骤,结合下文“You can always start the conversation.(你可以随时开始谈话)”可知,不要等着别人和你说话,你要主动和别人说话。
根据上文“It is a good thing to stay in touch (保持联系). However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.(保持联系是件好事。
结合小标题“Enjoy your friendship(享受你的友谊)”和下文“Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be(试着不要改变他们,让他们变成你想要的样子)”可知,本段描述的是欣赏朋友原本的样子,不改变他们。选项D“尽量不要挑朋友的毛病”正是享受友谊的一种体现,可以引出下文不要试图改变朋友。故选D。

This will not only spark interest but also make students more aware of the available books. Secondly, updating the book collection regularly can attract more students.
A. They pass through frozen rivers. B. They provide amazing sea views.
C. They enjoy a mix of foreign cultures. D. They feature uniquely styled buildings.

It was the permission slip, completely safe and perfectly signed by her mother!
