They did not have many friends there, but they soon met a lot of interesting people, and after a few weeks, they often went to dinner or parties at other people’s houses. Then Mrs Harris said to her husband, “We’ve been to a lot of other people’s houses, and now we must invite them to our house?” “Certainly,” answered her husband, “A big party will be the easiest thing, won’t it? Then we can start to invite people to dinner in small numbers next month.” So Mrs Harris said, “Yes, I’ll invite all our friends here to a big party on 5th December.” “How many will that be?” Mr Harris asked. “Don’t invite too many.” Mrs Harris was beginning to write the invitations when her husband saw that she was writing, “Party: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.” “That isn’t very nice, is it?” he said. “You’re telling our guests that they must go at 8:30.” So Mrs Harris just wrote “Party: 6:30 p.m.” A lot of guests came, and they all had a good time, but they did not go home at 8:30. In fact they were still there at midnight when the doorbell rang and a policeman arrived. He said, “You must stop making noise, because someone has complained.” Mr Harris said he did not want to quarrel with the policeman, so everyone went home. They were sorry to have to go. When Mr and Mrs Harris were alone again, she said to him. “That was a surprise, wasn’t it? Who complained about the noise?” “I did,” Mr Harris answered in a tired voice. 24. Why did Mr Harris and his wife move to another town? A. Because they wanted to make some new friends. B. Because Mr Harris changed his work. C. Because they wanted to meet a lot of interesting people. D. Because they enjoyed going to parties and visiting other people’s houses. 25. What made Mr and Mrs Harris hold a party at their house? A. They had gone to other people’s parties many times. B. They could ask people to dinner in small numbers. C. They liked making friends with others. D. It was easy to hold a big party at home. 26. How long would Mrs Harris like the party to last? A. From morning till night. B. About fourteen hours. C. About two hours. D. Till midnight. 27. When did the party end that evening? A. At about 8:30. B. When the policeman talked with Mr Harris on the phone. C. At midnight. D. When someone telephoned the police station. C It is generally accepted these days that reading a book will help you relieve stress. And it may actually make you a more thoughtful person as you learn to connect with the various characters. But there’s more. A new study discovered that reading more than 3.5 hours per week actually increased a person’s lifespan by 23 percent — about 12 years for the people involved in the study. The study was led by a group of researchers at Yale University. It looked at 3,635 people, both men and women but all older than 50. The researchers divided them into three categories: those who didn’t read books; those who read up to 3.5 hours a week; those who read more than 3.5 hours a week. After the researchers adjusted for factors like education, health and income, the data showed that, on average, those who read about 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die. In addition, the study examined people who read newspapers and magazines and found that they were 11 percent less likely to die than non-readers, but only if they spent more than seven hours reading each week. That may be due to the different forms of these items. When people read newspapers or magazines, they tend to skim the material rather than read it fully. Avni Bavishi, the study’s leader, said, “We believe people need to know, learn and understand more things when they are reading books, because they’re longer and there are more characters, more plots to follow, and more connections to make.” From all of these, the authors concluded that with a healthy diet and exercise, books appeared to promote a “significant survival advantage”. Clearly, there is a need for more study. We’re certain that book lovers all around the world will be glad to provide the data needed to make further conclusions. 28. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. A few people think that reading can help them relax. B. Reading can make a person more sensitive. C. Most people think that reading can help them to live a better life. D. Reading can help a person to live a longer life. 29. What can we learn about the people in the study from the text? A. All of them were older than fifty. B. Most of them were women readers. C. More than half of them were college students. D. They were divided into four groups by the researchers. 30. Generally speaking, those who read newspapers and magazines ______ than those who read books. A. live longer B. are more likely to be positive C. have a better ability to understand D. get fewer benefits in terms of the lifespan 31. In the last paragraph, the writer aims to _______. A. tell readers about the importance of reading B. call on book lovers to provide more data for the study C. analyze the data of the study D. encourage readers to make further conclusions by themselves D If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life. Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world. They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others. We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now? Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead. 32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Your life style. B. Your life value. C. Your trouble in life. D. Your life experience. 33. Why does the author say they are inspired every day? A. They possess different kinds of superpowers. B. They have got the power to change the world. C. Some people around them are making the world better. D. There are many powerful people in their life and work. 34. What does the author stress in Paragraph 5? A. Learning more and contributing more to a cause. B. Rising above self and acting to help others. C. Working hard to get a bigger opportunity. D. Trying your best to help the poor. 35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better. B. Much more progress will be made in the near future. C. The work on health is the most valuable experience. D. People’s efforts have been materially rewarded. Jealous Ken Dick and Ken lived in the same street. Well, I want to talk about an activity course for the summer holidays. It operated for the first time last year for a six-week period from the middle of July until the end of August. This year we will be holding the course again. There will be different things to do every week. So the children won’t be repeating the same activities over and over again. However, I don’t expect many children will come for the whole summer as I am sure their parents will want to be with them for a week or two. We do, however, ask that children attend full weeks, not just single days. It makes it easier for us to keep attendance records. The course is available for children aged eight to ten. Next year, those aged five to seven are welcome to the course. If a child or a child’s parent is interested in coming to our summer activity course, they should go to our website and print out an application form. Send it in with part payment as soon as possible. You’ll need to tell us which weeks you are planning to attend straight away. 24. 根据第一段中“Mr Harris used to work in Dover, but then he changed his work, so he and his wife moved to another town. (哈里斯先生过去在多佛工作,但后来他换了工作,于是他和妻子搬到了另一个城镇)”可知,哈里斯夫妇搬到另一个城镇是因为哈里斯先生换了工作。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“We’ve been to a lot of other people’s houses, and now we must invite them to our house (我们已经去过很多别人家做客了,现在我们必须邀请他们来我们家)”可知,哈里斯夫妇在家举办派对是因为他们已经多次参加过别人家的派对,需要回请。 根据第五段中“Mrs Harris was beginning to write the invitations when her husband saw that she was writing, “Party: 6:30 p.m.to 8:30 p.m.” (哈里斯夫人正要写邀请函,这时她丈夫看见她正在写:“派对:下午6点30分到8点30分。”)”可知,她原本计划派对从下午6点半持续到8点半,时长约2小时。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据第七段中“In fact they were still there at midnight when the doorbell rang and a policeman arrived. A. tell readers about the importance of reading B. call on book lovers to provide more data for the study C. analyze the data of the study D. encourage readers to make further conclusions by themselves 【答案】28. D 29. A 30. D 31. B 【解析】 【导语】文章介绍耶鲁一项研究,发现读书有助于延长人的寿命,读报刊效果则相对有限。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“A new study discovered that reading more than 3.5 hours per week actually increased a person’s lifespan by 23 percent—about 12 years for the people involved in the study. (一项新研究发现,每周阅读超过3.5小时,人的寿命实际上会增加23%,参与研究的人寿命大约增加12年)”可知,第一段除了提到阅读缓解压力、让人善于思考之外,还点明阅读有助于延长人的寿命。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“It looked at 3,635 people, both men and women but all older than 50. (该研究调查了3635人,有男有女,但全部年龄超过50岁)”可知,研究对象全部年龄大于50岁。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“After the researchers adjusted for factors like education, health and income, the data showed that, on average, those who read about 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die. (研究人员在对教育、健康以及收入等因素进行校正之后,数据显示:平均来看,每周读书约3.5小时的人死亡风险会降低17%)”以及第四段中“In addition, the study examined people who read newspapers and magazines and found that they were 11 percent less likely to die than non-readers, but only if they spent more than seven hours reading each week. (此外,该研究还调查了阅读报纸和杂志的人群,发现与不阅读的人相比,他们的死亡风险降低11%,但这一结果的前提是他们每周的阅读时长要超过7小时)”可知,同样在寿命获益方面,读报刊要花更长时间才能获得比读书更低的收益。由此推断读报刊的人在寿命方面获得的益处更少。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We’re certain that book lovers all around the world will be glad to provide the data needed to make further conclusions. (我们相信世界各地的读书爱好者会乐意提供所需数据,以便得出进一步结论)”可知,作者写最后一段目的是号召读书爱好者为该研究提供更多数据。 D If you could have one superpower, what would it be? 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. I got on a bus, and it was not full yet, so the driver didn’t want to leave right away. Soon a middle-aged woman got on the bus. She looked tired and sad, with red eyes. She talked to no one but said she lost half her money on the way here. Someone stole it. Luckily, she hid the other half inside her shirt, so she still had some money left. She stopped crying after a while, but she still looked weak. Later the bus was full, and the driver started it. The ticket seller walked around to collect money for tickets. She came to an old man with old clothes. He told her he took the wrong bus and spent all his money. Now he had no money to buy a ticket home. The ticket seller was angry and told him to get off the bus. The driver agreed and repeated the same words. The woman watched all this. When they spoke loudly at the old man, she stood up quickly and walked over. Para1: “Stop troubling him! Can’t you see he only wants to go home?” she said loudly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para2: Everyone on the bus fell silent as the woman handed the money to the conductor. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 “Stop troubling him! Can’t you see he only wants to go home?” she said loudly. “He doesn’t have any money!” the driver shouted back. “Well, that’s no reason to throw him off the bus,” she insisted. Then she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed it to the conductor. “Here’s his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” The conductor froze, and the driver’s face turned red with embarrassment. The old man stared at the woman, his eyes filled with gratitude. Everyone on the bus fell silent as the woman handed the money to the conductor. No one moved or spoke, but I could see soft smiles spreading across many faces. When the bus reached the old man’s stop, he stood up, bowed deeply to the woman, and whispered, “Thank you, kind lady.” She waved him off, a warm smile on her face. For the rest of the ride, she sat quietly, no longer looking tired or sad. Her small act of kindness had not only helped the old man but also lightened the mood of everyone on the bus. I realized that even a little compassion can make a huge difference in someone’s day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①取出:take out/get out ②低语:whisper/murmur 情绪类 ①感激:filled with gratitude/be thankful/show appreciation ②尴尬:with embarrassment/feel ashamed/look awkward 【点睛】[高分句型1] When the bus reached the old man's stop, he stood up, bowed deeply to the woman, and whispered, “Thank you, kind lady. ”(由连接词when引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2] Her small act of kindness had not only helped the old man but also lightened the mood of everyone on the bus.(由not only...but also...连接的并列谓语结构) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $第一节听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的ABC3个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题,每段对话仅读一遍。Text one, your birthday is around the corner. right? However, I don't expect many children will come for the whole summer, as I am sure their parents will want to be with them for a week or two. We do, however, ask that children attend full weeks, not just single days. IT makes IT easier for us to keep attendance records. The course is available for children age eight to ten next year. Those aged five to seven are welcome to the course. If a child or a child's parent is interested in coming to our summer activity course, they should go to our website and print out an application form, send IT in with part payment as soon as possible. You'll need to tell us which week you are planning to attend straight away, but you won't need to choose your activities in advance.
