第二节
Just then, Maria sensed my brother’s unease (不安). She gently approached him. She said softly, “Hey, is something wrong?” She knelt by the window and brought some potentially useful items. She took out a chocolate bar and a small dinosaur toy from her jacket pocket. My brother’s eyes widened, and his breathing gradually steadied as he accepted these unexpected gifts. Then Maria sat beside my brother, chatting about his favorite basketball game and sharing simple stories to relax him completely.
When my brother and Maria were getting along so well, Louis returned with a jack. By the light of the flashlight, Louis patiently explained each step. In the darkness, my brother’s laughter echoed, while Maria asked him to name every kind of dinosaur he knew. A few minutes later, the spare tire was installed. When I tried to pay them, Louis just smiled. “If it were you, you would also help for free, wouldn’t you?” he said. That night, two strangers made me realize that even in the darkest moments, kindness would still come to our rescue.

Last year, I signed up for a running club to become a shoe tester. The first day I arrived there, I was greeted by a pair of shoes in bright pink, which showed my first task. Oh, my, what am I getting myself into? Uneasy, I stood there, hesitating to try them on.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve not been a fan of the spotlight, which comes from anxiety about my body. When I started running in high school, runners were known for their mountains of muscle mass. Me? I was skinny and bony. Embarrassed by my body, I would find the least crowded trails (小径), hiding myself from as many eyes as possible. This tendency to shy away from others continued beyond high school and remains even to this day. So when I first saw the pink shoes, I was hit with a rush of doubt. How silly I would look running along in such eye-catching shoes!
But I didn’t want to let my coworkers down. I took to the unpopulated trails, where I still received a few comments — some good, some bad. Easily the most memorable moment was when an oncoming cyclist, right as he passed me, made what seemed to be intended as a mean comment. It was so unexpected and unpleasant that, after a brief moment of surprise, I simply laughed it off and moved on. I had been afraid of attracting attention for so long — and now that it happened, I was completely fine. I was able to disregard unfavourable judgments with ease.
Since then, anytime I felt discomfort from any kind of anxiety coming up, I thought back to that moment with the cyclist and how easily I was able to put his comments behind me. As I learned to be comfortable with uncomfortable thoughts, I began feeling better — not because my imperfections are gone, but because what someone looks like on the run shouldn’t matter.
4.What made the author uneasy in the first paragraph?
A.Settling into a new club. B.Trying out for a running event.
C.Testing a pair of flashy shoes. D.Performing under the spotlight.
5.Why did the author choose the unpopulated trails?
A.To guide his coworkers. B.To escape attention from others.
C.To take a shortcut to win. D.To avoid coming across cyclists.
6.How did the author feel eventually after hearing the unkind comment from a cyclist?
A.Regretful. B.Confused. C.Relieved. D.Inspired.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Sport Is a Solution for All Troubles B.Imperfection Holds its Own Beauty
C.A Club Transformed My Life Course D.The Pink Shoes Silenced My Inner Anxiety
C
Gothic fiction is a genre of literature featuring the elements of fear, horror, and the supernatural. There are often characters such as vampire (吸血鬼) and evil spirits. Common subject matter includes family curses (诅咒), mystery and madness. Gothic fiction is the forerunner of the modern horror genre, although the original genre has continued to have a faithful following.
Originating in the late 18th century, this type of fiction was a branch of the larger Romantic movement that sought to stimulate strong emotions in the reader. The genre is so called because it tends to use medieval (中世纪的) architecture as its settings, reminding people of the terrifying dark time of the Middle Ages. Gothic fictions place heavy emphasis on atmosphere, building suspense and a sense of unease in the reader.
Although the novel is often considered the best example of this genre, some poetry and short stories can also be characterized as Gothic, such as those written by the Graveyard Poets of late 18th century England and the short stories of Edgar Allen Poe. These works of literature have influenced Gothic writers ever since they were published.
Gothic fiction often deals with past eras. In its early days, the genre took the medieval period as a major inspiration. Modern examples of this type of fiction have continued the tendency to look to past eras. They often use such settings as colonial (殖民时期的) America, Victorian England or the pre-Civil War southern United States. Those set in the present day might take place in a 19-century building, much in the way that early works commonly used medieval castles as their settings.
Gothic novels were among the most popular fiction of the late 18th century. Famous examples include Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto and Anne Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho. Although it was less popular during the Victorian era, Gothic fiction was once again among the most-read literature of the late 20th century. The vampire, one of the favorite stock characters of this genre, appeared in several important works of this era, including Sheridan LeFanu’s Carmilla and Dracula. Writers such as William Faulkner, Harper Lee and Tennessee Williams applied the style to their treatment of the American South. But the influence of Gothic fiction can not only be noted in literature but also in film and music. For example, many of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, as well as the books on which they were based, could be considered Gothic.
8.According to the article, Gothic fiction came into existence ________.
A.in the Middle Ages. B.in the early eighteenth century.
C.in the era of Romantic movement. D.in the Victorian era and the 20th century.
9.Which of following statements about the Gothic genre is TRUE?
A.The Gothic genre paved the way for modern horror genre.
B.The Gothic genre overtook Romantic literary works.
C.The Gothic writing style influenced the medieval architecture.
D.Vampire was the most frequent character in Hitchcock’s film.
10.Which of the following can we infer from the passage?
A.Edgar Allen Poe was a famous Gothic novelist.
B.All Gothic novels are set in the medieval period.
C.The Middle Ages was known for its terrifying darkness.
D.Carmilla is a popular Gothic novel in the 18th century.
11.Which of the following is most likely to be taken from a Gothic novel?
A.Philip woke early next morning. His sleep had been restless, but when he looked at the sunshine that slid through the blinds, making patterns on the floor, he sighed with satisfaction.
B.Miss Manette had taken some refreshment on the road, and required none then, and was extremely anxious to see the gentleman from Tellson’s immediately.
C.I fancied myself now like one of the ancient giants, which were said to live in caves, where none could come at them; for I persuaded myself while I was here, if five hundred savages were to hunt me, they could never find me out.
D.In the silence of the night, how we tremble with fright at the melancholy threat of their tone! For every sound that floats, from the rust within their throats, is a groan.
D
The C-8 boat looks like a simple speedboat in Stockholm’s cold water. But when it speeds up, something amazing happens: it takes off! The electric boat’s body lifts out of the water and flies half a meter above the surface, held up by three thin supports.
These supports are connected to “hydrofoils” — wings that work underwater. They lift the boat up, which greatly reduces drag (阻力) and saves up to 80% of the energy needed to move. Digital equipment on the boat checks the waves and reconciles the wings 100 times every second, making the ride feel very smooth.
Its maker says these electric hydrofoils are extremely suitable for city travel. They are quiet, produce no pollution, and cost very little to run. Because they create only small waves, they can go faster in cities where boat speed is often limited. Supporters believe they can help reduce traffic on crowded roads by using city waterways more.
Light weight is important for the boat’s performance. Therefore, boat makers use carbon fibre (碳纤维), a material that is strong and extremely light. This has been key to making hydrofoils possible. Besides, these boat makers apply used electric vehicle engines and batteries, lowering costs and supporting common vehicle charging units.
In short, new technology is changing the boat industry. Hydrofoils will become the normal way to travel fast on water within ten years. As a matter of fact, nearly half of people around the world live near coasts, and many city roads are too busy. Using waterways — or “blue highways” — makes a lot of sense, first for people and later for goods. Today, although these flying boats cannot carry vehicles across oceans, they are perfect for short passenger trips in city waters.
12.What does the text say about the C-8 boat?
A.It runs on electricity. B.It can hold many passengers.
C.It requires no supports. D.It can travel fully under water.
13.What does the underlined word “reconciles” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Locates. B.Cleans. C.Repairs. D.Adapts.
14.How do the boat makers cut down on production costs?
A.By turning to carbon fibre. B.By recycling vehicle parts.
C.By simplifying production processes. D.By removing unnecessary equipment.
15.What is the author’s attitude towards hydrofoils?
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Uncaring.

My brother, six years old, and I were driving home one evening. As we wanted to get home as soon as possible, we chose a shorter country road. The road I was driving on really needed repairing, so I drove slowly. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise, and then I came to a stop, and soon, I got a flat tire (漏了气的轮胎). I quickly put up warning signs on both the front and the back of the car.
At first, I called my insurance agent because they had a road rescue service. But what I didn’t know was that this was only available during the working hours from Monday to Friday. So I tried calling the insurance company again. But that didn’t work either. I was transferred to various automatic answering systems and couldn’t reach anyone in person.
Worse still, my brother suddenly lost his temper. He wanted me to keep driving, but I had to explain to him why I couldn’t do that. I tried to calm him down and figure out what to do.
Just as I was trying to search for information about various 24-hour road rescue service companies on the mobile app, a passing car stopped by the roadside. A young man and a woman got out of the car. The man introduced himself as Louis, and the woman beside him was his wife, Maria. He explained that they saw my warning signs and knew someone needed help. When I told him my tire was flat, he immediately asked if there was a spare tire in the trunk. “I have a spare tire, but no jack (千斤顶),” I said. I also admitted that I didn’t know how to change the tire. “It’s okay. I have a jack at home. My house is just a few minutes’ drive away in the nearby village. It’s about a 15-minute ride. Please wait patiently. I’m going back to get the jack now,” Louis replied, and then he turned to walk towards his car.

【答案】4.C 5.B 6.C 7.D

A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Uncaring.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.B 15.A
【导语】文章主要介绍C-8电动水翼快艇的工作原理、性能优势、制作工艺,并展望了水翼船在城市水上交通的广阔发展前景。
【详解】12.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But when it speeds up, something amazing happens: it takes off! The electric boat’s body lifts out of the water and flies half a meter above the surface, held up by three thin supports.(但当它加速时,会发生奇妙的现象:船体起飞!这艘电动船的船身离开水面,在三根细支架的支撑下,在水面上方半米处飞行)”可知,C-8快艇是电动船只,依靠电力驱动运行。
13.词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Digital equipment on the boat checks the waves and reconciles the wings 100 times every second, making the ride feel very smooth.(船上的数字设备每秒检测海浪、reconciles翼板一百次,让航行体验十分平稳)”可知,船上的数字设备会根据海浪变化实时调整、适配水翼状态,以此保障航行平稳,因此,reconciles意为“适配、调整”,与adapt意义相近。
14.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Besides, these boat makers apply used electric vehicle engines and batteries, lowering costs and supporting common vehicle charging units.(此外,造船厂商使用二手电动车发动机和电池,以此降低成本,同时适配通用车载充电设备)” 可知,制造商通过复用、回收车辆零部件的方式缩减生产成本。
15.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“Hydrofoils will become the normal way to travel fast on water within ten years. As a matter of fact, nearly half of people around the world live near coasts, and many city roads are too busy. Using waterways — or “blue highways” — makes a lot of sense, first for people and later for goods.(水翼船将在十年内成为水上快速出行的常规方式。事实上,全球近半数人口居住在海岸附近,且许多城市道路拥堵不堪。利用水路——或称“蓝色高速路”——十分合理,先用于载人,而后用于货物运输)”可知,作者认为水翼船发展前景广阔、实用价值极高,对其未来发展充满期待与希望。

However, the busy life, heavy academic pressure and endless worries often keep you from treasuring what truly matters.(感恩的心态能让心灵得到安慰。然而,忙碌的生活、沉重的学业压力和无穷无尽的烦恼,常常让你无法珍惜那些真正重要的东西。)”和空后“Fortunately, there are practical methods to build a gratitude habit and appreciate the beauty of life more deeply.(幸运的是,有一些实用的方法可以帮助你培养感恩的习惯,更深入地欣赏生活的美好。)”
17.根据空后“Each morning, choose to stay thankful. You can begin by expressing your gratitude aloud, or doing a tiny positive act, such as relaxing yourself or giving yourself encouragement in front of the mirror.(每天早上,选择保持感恩之心。你可以从大声表达感激开始,或者做一个小小的积极举动,比如在镜子前放松自己,或给自己一些鼓励。)”可知,空后主要介绍早上感恩的具体行动,如大声表达、照镜子鼓励自己等等,故B项“以感恩的心态开始新的一天。”符合,位于本段首句,总结本段内容。

19.根据空前“Keeping a gratitude journal is another simple yet powerful practice.(写感恩日记是另一种简单而有效的练习。)”和空后“By recording small moments of kindness and beauty, you will gradually find inner peace and hope.(通过记录那些充满善意和美好的小瞬间,你会逐渐找到内心的平静与希望。)”可知,空前提到写感恩日记的方法,空后则介绍了其作用,故此处C项“你每天只需要写一点点。”符合,说明具体写日记的方式,并引出后文的好处。
20.根据空前“In addition, you can read encouraging stories of people who got through tough times.(此外,你可以阅读那些度过艰难时光的人的励志故事。)”

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, Maria sensed my brother’ s unease (不安).

When my brother and Maria were getting along so well, Louis returned with a jack.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
