Dad always cheered me on in my high school and college running races.
Now, as a mother of three children, I have come to realize that my father must have slowed down when he ran with me. I also know why he ran along beside a younger me, asking strange questions. He was trying to communicate with me because he didn’t know what I was thinking.

The Fields Medal, often called the “Nobel Prize of mathematics”, is one of the highest honours in mathematics (数学). It is given every four years to young mathematicians under 40 years old around the world.
In 2026, Wang Hong made history. She became the first mathematician from China and the third female (女性) mathematician in the world to win the Fields Medal. She received the award with her university classmate Deng Yu at the International Congress of Mathematicians.
Wang Hong was born in 1991 in Guilin, Guangxi. She showed great interest in learning from an early age. At 16, she entered Peking University, where she first studied earth science before changing her major (专业) to mathematics. However, her journey was not easy. With many excellent classmates around her, she sometimes doubted herself. She even studied architecture (建筑学) for half a year before she went back to math.
After university, she studied in France and the United States. In 2019, she received her PhD in mathematics from MIT. Her greatest achievement was proving the 3-D Kakeya conjecture (三维挂谷猜想), a famous math problem that mathematicians believed might be true but could not prove for more than 100 years. Together with Joshua Zahl, she found a new way and finally proved it. Her work has helped mathematicians and scientists explore other difficult problems in mathematics and physics.
Although Wang Hong is a famous mathematician, she lives a balanced life. She thinks people won’t learn well if they push themselves to study all the time. She once said, “Rest when you are tired; study when you have energy.” She often does sports and takes breaks when meeting hard problems.

Imagine you have just cleaned your classroom. Then a strict teacher in school walks in, looks around, and gives you a big smile. 26 But this time the testers are birds.
In recent years, groups of rare (稀有的) birds like black storks and egrets have been seen along the Fenhe River. 27 These birds are very picky: they only live near clean water. Their arrival makes the river full of life.
Things were quite different in the past. There were few rare birds. 28 Because the river was polluted seriously. Then the government started a plan to bring the river back to life. Workers spared no effort to turn dirty water into clean water. 29 These wetlands helped clean the water. The water quality has improved a lot.

Money is part of our life. So we face the same question: what to do with our money?
Smart spending (理性消费) means using money in a way that fits real needs, real value and real plans.
In daily life, teenagers usually spend most of their money buying something necessary — food, clothes or school things. But sometimes, they buy things they don’t really need. Following the crowd may lead teenagers to buy something unnecessary. For example, when some classmates have the same kind of pencil case, a teenager may feel unhappy about having a different one. So he will buy a new one like theirs.
Teenagers can start learning how to manage money wisely at an early age. On Tom’s 6th birthday, his grandmother gave him several jars (罐子) to help him make good use of money. One was for spending, one for saving and another for giving. It was at that time that Tom started his own money journal (记账本) to record where the money had gone. He has had this habit since then.

Tom’s birthday present is more than several jars. His grandmother has given a kid the chance to learn lifelong values. The wider goal of the jars is to encourage teenagers to think more wisely about the money and the things they can do.

Imagine you have no phone, no map, and no one to ask for help. How would you know where to go? For thousands of years, humans have found clever ways to take directions.
One simple way is to watch the sky. East is where the sun rises, and west is where it sets. That is the simplest sign. At night, ancient Chinese depended on the stars. The most useful one is the North Star. It stays almost still in the northern sky. Travelers followed it along their journeys across the desert. Sailors (水手) once used it to guide their ships on the sea.
Nature offers you signs to read. For example, moss grows thicker on the wet dark north side of trees. That’s why in the forests of North America, hunters can easily tell the north is on the mossy side.
Man-made marks are left to help. In the snowy Arctic (北极), local people built stone statues (雕塑) — shaped like a person — as special signs. Travelers who saw one would know the right way. Even today, people still build them as marks or works of art.
Tools give people a hand. About 2,500 years ago, the Chinese made sinan. It was often used to help people build houses facing south. During the Northern Song Dynasty, the compass (指南针) was invented. Sailors used it at sea to find their way and return home safely. Later, the compass spread (传播) to Europe. It was improved and used to explore unknown oceans and find new lands.
Even long before modern technologies, people all over the world knew where they were going. ▲
