For Shao Quanxi, compiling (编纂) an encyclopaedia is not just a job—it is a dream that has come true. For the editors of Encyclopaedia of Plant Protection in China, this project is like raising a child. It includes the hard work of over 3,000 experts in plant protection.
Encyclopaedia of Plant Protection in China tells people a lot about the plant protection system, including the newest development in this field. There are 8 volumes and 16 books in total. Most of the work on compiling it was done between 2012 and 2022. It is special because it’s China’s first complete reference (参考) book in plant protection.
Though the encyclopaedia seems difficult, it is not hard to read. “It is like an open library with no walls. Everyone can read it. It teaches people things and helps teach scientific knowledge.” Shao said.
Shao also said the book changes some wrong ideas. For example, people usually think mice are harmful, but this encyclopaedia says mice are important. Many animals eat them, and their digging makes soil better. Besides, their holes are homes to small creatures.
Shao hopes that with China’s best technologies and newest ideas, Encyclopaedia of Plant Protection in China can help farmers produce more and guide the world. “It helps everyone know how humans and nature can live together peacefully. It shows the idea of a global community of life.” Shao added.
16. Why is the project of compiling the encyclopaedia like raising a child for the editors?
A. Because the project takes a long time and great efforts.
B. Because the editors love their own children very much.
C. Because the project is very small and easy to complete.
D. Because the project is able to “grow up” like a child.
17. What is special about Encyclopaedia of Plant Protection in China?
A. It took more than ten years to finish most of its compiling work.
B. It’s China’s earliest complete reference book in plant protection.
C. It includes newest policies and development in plant protection.
D. It has more volumes and books than any other encyclopaedia.
18. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The encyclopaedia is mainly used in schools and universities.
B. The encyclopaedia plays an important role in spreading science.
C. Scientific knowledge was hard to spread before this encyclopaedia.
D. Only scientists and experts can understand the encyclopaedia easily.
19. How does Shao Quanxi prove that the book changes some wrong ideas?
A. By showing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C. By telling a true story. D. By answering questions.

Marathon pacers (马拉松配速员), sometimes also called “rabbits”, are usually great runners. They run at a planned speed (速度) and help a group of runners finish the race in their planned time. They usually hold a sign or a balloon with the time on it to help the runners finish the race. There are usually between 10 and 15 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different group.
There are many reasons to run with pacers. First of all, they can help you run at the right speed. If you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you can get tired quickly and slow down in the second half. However, if you run slowly in the first half and fast in the second half, it can be hard to run faster in the end because you’re very tired then. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your speed. You just need to follow your pacer.
Marathon pacers do more than that. They can encourage you to keep going when you go through the hard part of the race. In fact, many marathon runners can do their best by following a pacer.
It’s not easy to become a marathon pacer. You must have experience in running marathons and can control (控制) the speed of a race well.
20. What can you see on a marathon pacer’s sign or a balloon?
A. The name. B. The speed. C. The time. D. The name of pacers.
21. How many marathon pacers are there possibly in a marathon?
A. 8. B. 12. C. 16. D. 20.
22. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Runners. B. Pacers. C. Reasons. D. Rabbits.
23. Running with a pacer in a marathon has the following advantages:
①You can win the first prize in the race.
②You can run at the right speed all the way.
③You can pay little attention to your speed.
④You can go through the race’s hard part.
A. ②③④ B. ①③④ C. ①②③ D. ①②④
24. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Who a marathon pacer is and how to be a marathon pacer.
B. How marathon runners choose the right pacers for a race.
C. The reason why there are more pacers in a marathon race.
D. The history of marathon pacers helping runners in a race.
