Carburetors (化油器) may represent old- school technology in the automobile world. However,Riley Schlick,a high school senior in Florida, rebuilds them for a tidy profit.
Once a vital piece of equipment for cars, carburetors adjust the air- fuel mixture for internal combustion engines (内燃机).In its simplest form,a carburetor takes in air from one end and forces it through a narrow section that causes the air to speed up and the pressure to drop.As a result, the falling pressure creates a vacuum that draws in air and fuel through another hole in the side, which gathers dirt and generates performance problems.Chemical carburetor cleaners sometimes address the issues, but not the way a full rebuild can. That's where Schlick's Bradenton- based business Riley's Rebuilds comes in.
Schlick learned how to do the work from her dad,Dane Trask, who rebuilds classic cars as a hobby. He showed her how to do it,and also made use of some online instructional videos. "She picked it up easily," he said.
Schlick and her staff —her school friends Dagny,Katie,Amelia, and Elaine —unbox a carburetor that arrives in the mail and first document its basic information such as origin and model number before they get the device ready to break down. The team soda blasts (强速喷射) the body to remove the dirt and dust and then blows it to clear any remaining soda bits." We use soda blasting instead of sand or glass because it's gentler. And the soda doesn't get stuck in the carburetors," Schick said.Once the dirt is gone, they dry the carburetor thoroughly and put it back together.
Riley's Rebuilds charges $145 and up to rebuild a carburetor and send it back to its owner. On average, the team works on 20 or more carburetors a week.
Carburetors look complicated and difficult, but actually they are not. From a business standpoint,it is a growing market for Schlick and for younger kids.
24.What is the purpose of paragraph 2? ______
A. To illustrate the features of a full rebuild.
B. To stress the limitations of chemical cleaners.
C. To introduce the working principle of carburetors.
D. To highlight the significance of Riley's Rebuilds.
25.What do we know about Schlick from paragraph 3? ______
A. She is quick to learn. B. She runs a family business.
C. She enjoys surfing online. D. She is really into classic cars.
26.Why does the team use soda as the cleaning material? ______
A. It's carburetor- friendly. B. It's custom- tailored.
C. It's readily available. D. It's cost- effective.
27.Which of the following can best describe Schlick's business? ______
A. Flexible and sustainable. B. Fruitful and promising.
C. Competitive but profitable. D. Demanding but manageable.

Fresco(湿壁画) refers to painting techniques used on plaster(灰泥).Popular during the Renaissance period, especially in Italy, frescoes were usually used to decorate walls of public buildings.
The purest type of fresco painting, also known as "buon fresco",involves mixing pigments(颜料) directly with wet plaster. The color is thus actually part of the material, rather than a coating on top of it,as is the case with "fresco a secco" or with regular painting. The colors of a buon fresco are especially vibrant and long-lasting;the Bull-Leaping Fresco in Knossos,Crete was created around the 17th-15th centuries BCE,but the colors are still clear today. However, this technique is not without its unique disadvantages. For one thing, colors look different when they are wet than when they are dry.Artists of the time typically mixed their own plaster and color mixtures, working quickly to finish a part of a mural(壁画) before the plaster dried. The mixture they created the next time might have been a slightly different shade. If you look carefully at the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel, you can see which parts must have been completed in a single session by the faint differences in colors.
Fresco a secco requires something to be added to the paint to make it stick to the dry plaster. This technique is sometimes used to repair a buon fresco that has been damaged, although the colors are generally not as bright. However, some colors actually worked better with the fresco a secco.During the Renaissance period, the available pigments for creating blue did not mix well with wet plaster;for this reason, skies, water, and blue clothing sometimes were painted as secco frescoes after the buon fresco had dried.
In 1997,the frescoes by Giotto di Bondone in the Basilica of St.Francis in Assisi,Italy were damaged in an earthquake.150 restorers,of whom most are volunteers, spent five years gathering 60,000 pieces that they could find and set them back into place, much like a puzzle, although about 35 percent of the fresco remains incomplete.
28.Which of the following can replace the word "vibrant" underlined in paragraph 2? ______
A. Bright. B. Simple. C. Watery. D. Rare.
29.What does the author want to show by mentioning the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel? ______
A. It was in Italy that true fresco was widely used.
B. It is crucial to differentiate varied painting style.
C. It took time for painters to create their unique colors.
D. It was hard to create the exactly same color every time.
30.What is the third paragraph mainly about? ______
A. The disadvantages of fresco a secco.
B. The reasons why painters preferred blue.
C. The characters and uses of fresco a secco.
D. The similarities between the two fresco techniques.
31.Which can best describe the repair process of Giotto's frescoes? ______
A. Slow but creative. B. Complicated and dangerous.

For decades, scientists thought of the brain as the most valuable and consequently most closely guarded part of the body.Locked safely behind the blood-brain barrier,it was broadly free of the harm of viruses and the battles started by the immune system(免疫系统).Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder:is the brain really so separated from the body? The answer, according to a growing body of evidence,is no.
The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing.Changes in the make-up of the microorganisms (微生物) in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson's disease. There is also a theory that infection during pregnancy(孕期) could lead to brain diseases in babies.
The effect is two-way.There is a lengthening list of symptoms not typically viewed as disorders of the nervous system, but the brain plays a large part in them. For example, the development of a fever is influenced by a population of nerve cells that control body temperature and appetite.Evidence is mounting that cancers use nerves to grow and spread.
The interconnection between brain and body has promising implications for our ability to both understand and treat illnesses. If some brain disorders start outside the brain, then perhaps treatments for them could also reach in from outside.Treatments that take effect through the digestive system, the heart or other organs, would be much easier and less risky than those that must cross the blood-brain barrier.
It also works in the opposite direction.Study shows mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulation to a brain area involved in positive emotion and motivation.Activation of the brain reward centre —called the ventral tegmental area (VTA)— seems to cause immune changes that contribute to it.Working out how this happens could help to destroy cancers, enhance responses to vaccines(疫苗) and even re-evaluate physical diseases that, for centuries, have not been considered as being psychologically driven.
32.What do the researchers focus on about the brain? ______
A. Its protecting system. B. Its exposure to diseases.
C. Its controlling function. D. Its connection to the body.
33.How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2? ______
A. By explaining a theory. B. By providing examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By presenting cause and effect.
34.Which best describes treatments that do not cross the blood-brain barrier? ______
A. Cheaper. B. More specific. C. Safer. D. More direct.
35.What does the study suggest in the last paragraph? ______
A. Brain health depends on immune changes.
B. Brain stimulation leads to negative emotions.
C. The brain can help enhance psychological health.
D. The brain may be key to treating physical diseases.
Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and how you think others see you. (36) Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-worth.
People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it's true. People may see them as obnoxious or "full of themselves". (37) They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem "sure of themselves".
If you're starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show different sides of yourself. It isn't going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help. (38)
However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections. (39) It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.
(40) It will take some work but your entire life—from your relationships to your body image to your work habits—will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see how everything else changes as a result.
A. Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.
B. You have the power to shape a new self-perception.
C. This encourages you to speak openly without worry.
D. The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes.
E. Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.
F. People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.
G. With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.

M: Are zoos necessary, or are they only bad to the animals? This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts. Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted illegally for fur or skins and left in their natural habitats, which we can call wildlife reserves. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild. Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modem zoos are designed very closely to the natural environment. They believe that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled hunting and killing but can give birth to babies under protection and in that way they may be saved from dying out. OK, thatˈs all from me and youˈre expected to express your opinions on this question next class.

In its simplest form,a carburetor takes in air from one end and forces it through a narrow section that causes the air to speed up and the pressure to drop.As a result, the falling pressure creates a vacuum that draws in air and fuel through another hole in the side, which gathers dirt and generates performance problems.(最简单的形式是,化油器从一端吸入空气,迫使它通过一个狭窄的部分,使空气加速,压力下降。
Schlick learned how to do the work from her dad,Dane Trask, who rebuilds classic cars as a hobby. He showed her how to do it,and also made use of some online instructional videos." She picked it up easily," he said.( Schlick从父亲Dane Trask那里学会了如何做这项工作,他的父亲把重建老爷车作为一种爱好。 故选A。
We use soda blasting instead of sand or glass because it's gentler. And the soda doesn't get stuck in the carburetors," Schick said.("我们使用苏打水喷射而不是沙子或玻璃,因为它更温和。而且苏打水不会卡在化油器里,"Schick说。)可知,团队使用苏打作为清洁材料是因为它对化油器更友好,不会卡在化油器里。故选A。
Carburetors look complicated and difficult, but actually they are not. From a business standpoint,it is a growing market for Schlick and for younger kids.(化油器看起来很复杂,但实际上并非如此。

Fresco a secco requires something to be added to the paint to make it stick to the dry plaster. This technique is sometimes used to repair a buon fresco that has been damaged, although the colors are generally not as bright.During the Renaissance period, the available pigments for creating blue did not mix well with wet plaster;for this reason, skies, water, and blue clothing sometimes were painted as secco frescoes after the buon fresco had dried.(干壁画需要在油漆中添加一些东西,使其粘在干燥的石膏上。 The characters and uses of fresco a secco(干壁画技法的特点和用法)。
In 1997,the frescoes by Giotto di Bondone in the Basilica of St.Francis in Assisi,Italy were damaged in an earthquake.150 restorers,of whom most are volunteers, spent five years gathering 60,000 pieces that they could find and set them back into place, much like a puzzle, although about 35 percent of the fresco remains incomplete.(1997年,意大利阿西西圣弗朗西斯大教堂的乔托•迪•邦多纳的壁画在地震中受损。
