Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox (牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medicinal plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.

Just as soil provides water and nutrients for trees, a substrate (基质) works the same way for mushrooms (蘑菇). Farmers usually use trees to make the substrate, which hurts the environment. But now, thanks to China’s “Juncao” (菌草) technology, fewer trees are cut down to do this.
Juncao is a grass that can grow up to 8 meters tall. To grow the mushrooms, people first collect the grass and make it into powder (粉末). Then, they mix the powder with water and other things to make the substrate. It helps them grow quickly. Later on, people can eat the mushrooms or sell them.
This “magical” grass has become a popular plant in Africa. After being brought there, Juncao grass has helped many people live a better life. For example, in Rwanda, about 4,000 families are planting Juncao for a living. Thanks to it, many of these families are making much more money than before, reported China Daily.
Besides helping grow mushrooms, Juncao grass has many other things to offer. It has a lot of fiber (纤维), so it can be turned into hardboard strong enough to make buildings. Because it is very nutritious (营养丰富的), it is also good food for animals, like cows and sheep. What’s more, Juncao can help address environmental problems. For example, its deep roots help make the soil more stable. When it rains, there is less chance of the soil being washed away.
The Juncao technology was invented by a group of Chinese scientists. The head of the group is Lin Zhanxi, a professor at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. They have been working on this since the 1980s. By July 2022, they had developed 49 kinds of Juncao grasses for 56 kinds of mushrooms. Today, more than 100 countries and regions (地区) are planting Juncao grasses.
23. Compared to the substrate made from trees, the substrate made from Juncao is ________.
A. more environmentally friendly B. more nutritious
C. easier to produce D. cheaper to produce
24. How has Juncao grass helped families in Rwanda?
A. By providing them with food. B. By increasing their income.

The days grow shorter, the leaves turn yellower, and the weather gets cooler. These are all signs that autumn has arrived. Or is it fall? Have you ever wondered why there are two names for this season?
Historical records show that there actually wasn’t any fall. There wasn’t actually spring either. The first season was winter. According to livescience.com, the name “winter” came from an unknown root word (词根) meaning “wet” and was used over 1,500 years ago. Back then, the Anglo-Saxons (盎格鲁-撒克逊人) just used it to mark time.
The word “summer” came next. For a long time, years were only divided into two seasons. “Spring” was introduced much later. It wasn’t until the 17th century that “spring”, coming from the phrase “spring of the leaf”, became the accepted name for the season.
Now let’s move on to “autumn” or “fall”. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, “autumn” actually came first, appearing in English writing as far back as the 1300s. It quickly became widespread because the old name, “harvest”(丰收), was unclear since it referred to both the season and the actual harvesting of crops.
However, names for the season didn’t end with autumn. Over time, the phrase “fall of the leaf” came to be linked with the season. This was shortened to “fall” in the 1600s. Both “autumn” and “fall” travelled across the Atlantic (大西洋) to America. “Autumn” actually was a lot more popular in America in the beginning. “Fall”, as in the season, was not even entered into the English dictionary until 1755. But today, “autumn” is more commonly used in British English, while “fall” is generally preferred in American English.
27. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The first season. B. The word “wet”.
C. The name “winter”. D. An unknown root word.
28. Why was the word “autumn” so quickly accepted?
A. It could express the meaning more clearly.
B. People liked the way it was pronounced.
C. It was easier for people to remember.
D. People thought it was more serious.
29. The difference between “autumn” and “fall” is that ________.
A. “autumn” has a wider meaning today
B. “fall” was introduced into America earlier
C. “fall” appeared later as a season name
D. “autumn” is widely used in American English now
30. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A way to divide a year.
B. The development of season names.
C. The difference between British and American English.
D. The influence of English works on naming seasons.
【答案】27. C 28. A 29. C 30. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了英语中四季名称的发展演变过程,重点说明了秋季的两个名称“autumn”和“fall”的起源、传播及使用差异。
【27题详解】
根据文章第2段“the name ‘winter’ came from an unknown root word meaning ‘wet’ and was used over 1,500 years ago. Back then, the Anglo-Saxons just used it to mark time.”可推知,划线单词“it”指代前文提到的“the name ‘winter’”,即“winter”这一名称。
【28题详解】
根据文章第4段“It quickly became widespread because the old name, ‘harvest’, was unclear since it referred to both the season and the actual harvesting of crops.”可推知,“autumn”能快速被接受,是因为它的表意比旧名称更清晰明确。
【29题详解】
根据文章第4段“‘autumn’ actually came first, appearing in English writing as far back as the 1300s.”和第5段“This was shortened to ‘fall’ in the 1600s.”可推知,“fall”作为季节名称的出现时间更晚。
【30题详解】
通读全文,文章依次介绍了英语中冬季、夏季、春季名称的由来,以及秋季两个名称的起源、传播与使用差异,核心围绕季节名称的发展展开。

Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox (牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medicinal plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The legend (传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an inviting place for tourists. Travelling there is a unique experience, as you can see scenery of the four seasons from different altitudes. “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring, and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice,” local people say of the special climate of Shennongjia.
Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 species of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.
