However, is the seaside holiday always the first choice for the family? In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for most families in the UK, and more and more British started travelling abroad for their summer holidays. After all, the British weather wasn’t very good, even in summer. Particularly popular with families on a budget (预算) is the package holiday, where the cost of flights and hotels are offered at a lower price. In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became wealthier, or at least had more spare money. Young people started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once at their destination (目的地), they socialized with other groups of young people and had a long party. British holidaying habits have begun to change. However, climate change means that the UK now has a warmer climate than before, so people don’t need to go overseas. Also, the world seems a less certain place as the economies rise and fall, which means that the cost of foreign holidays is less certain than it used to be. There is now an increased appreciation among the British for the diversity (多样性) of the UK. It is the diversity of the cultures in the UK that is beginning to be of interest to domestic tourists. People forget sometimes that there are different accents, traditions, food and peoples across all of the UK. Each town has its own regions, and each of those regions is very different from all the others. The UK has always been famous for its international explorers, but now it is starting to discover itself. 4. People in the UK began to travel abroad in the late 1970s because ________. A. travelling by air appeared at that times B. British people could pay for the journey C. there were more beautiful beaches abroad D. the weather overseas was the same as that in Britain 5. The “domestic tourists” in this passage like ________ now. A. travelling abroad B. travelling in Britain C. group travel D. package holiday 6. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage? A. B. C. D. 7. Why does the writer write this passage? A. To show the diversity of the cultures in the UK. B. To introduce the most traditional British seaside holliday. C. To show the British have the strong spirit of explration. D. To explain how the British holidaying habits have changed. B 5. B 6. D 7. 根据“In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for most families in the UK, and more and more British started travelling abroad for their summer holidays.” 根据“There is now an increased appreciation among the British for the diversity (多样性) of the UK. It is the diversity of the cultures in the UK that is beginning to be of interest to domestic tourists.” D。 C How much heat can dancers produce? Can the heat energy be stored or used? The SWG3 Arts Center in Glasgow, Scotland used a system called Bodyheat, which can use body heat of the dancers as a source of energy. In the Arts center, there are some air collectors taking in the heat produced by dancers. The heat goes through pipes and travels into 12 holes which are 200 meters below the ground. These holes connect to a large underground rock that can store the heat energy like a thermal battery. When the heat energy is needed, the system then moves it to areas that need warming. The heat energy can be turned into usable electricity. People can use it to charge phones or heat water. Besides, some hot air cools in the underground and it then can be sent to cool down the people in the arts center through pipes. When a person is just standing, he is producing about 100—150 watts of energy. When he starts dancing at a medium pace, he might be producing about 250 watts. So the harder people dance, the more heat energy they create. Data shows that the arts center has reduced the output of CO2 by 70 metric tons each year since it used Bodyheat. It has also saved a lot of money on energy bills. During COP26 conference in Glasgow in November, Bodyheat was shown. The system stored the heat from visitors and used it to power lights and heating. Bodyheat is thought to be a really good system. It may help solve the energy problem in the UK by producing more energy, so the UK will probably not depend on buying energy from other countries. Now, SWG3 plans to turn off their gas boilers and use Bodyheat to provide energy for all their heating. The hope is that by 2025, SWG3 will not let CO2 go into the air. The managing director of SWG3 said. “Bodyheat is a good way to deal with climate change. If we can make it work here, there’s no reason why we can’t take it to other places across Europe and other areas, not just here in Scotland and the UK.” 8. Bodyheat is a system that ______. A. gets energy from dancers’ heat B. helps dancers produce much heat C. solves the problems of dancers D. records how much heat dancers use 9. Which is the right order to show how Bodyheat mainly works? ①The heat energy is stored in a rock. ②The heat goes underground through pipes. ③The air collectors take in the heat. ④The heat energy is turned into electricity. A. ③①④② B. ③②①④ C. ②③④① D. ②①③④ 10. What is TRUE about Bodyheat according to the passage? A. It has helped save the energy cost greatly in the UK. B. It was improved during COP26 conference in Glasgow. C. It has reduced 70% of the CO2 output in the arts center. D. It’s thought to be helpful in solving the UK’s energy problem. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. Dancing is a Road to the World B. Bodyheat Changes the Way of Danciny C. Dancing Helps Save the Planet D. Bodyheat Has Become a Great Power 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据“Scotland used a system called Bodyheat, which can use body heat of the dancers as a source of energy.” 故选A。 根据“there are some air collectors taking in the heat produced by dancers. The heat goes through pipes and travels into 12 holes which are 200 meters below the ground. These holes connect to a large underground rock that can store the heat energy like a thermal battery. When the heat energy is needed, the system then moves it to areas that need warming. The heat energy can be turned into usable electricity.” 根据“It may help solve the energy problem in the UK by producing more energy”可知它可能有助于通过生产更多的能源来解决英国的能源问题。 D。 D The Last Leaf At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. In November, Johnsy became very ill, and was lying in her bed and looking through the window at the wall of the next house. “Her only chance,” the doctor said, “is for her to want to live.” After the doctor had gone, Sue came into Johnsy’s room. Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting. “Six,” said Johnsy, “There goes another one. There are only five leaves left now.” “Five what dear?” “Leaves, on the ivy vine (常春藤). When the last one falls, I’ll die.” “Johnsy, dear,” said Sue, “try to sleep. I must go and ask Behrman to be my model.” Old Behrman was a painter, who lived downstairs. He was past 60 and made a little money by being a model. He always wanted to paint a great work, but never began it. Behrman saw himself as a guard to protect the two young artists in the painting room upstairs. Sue found Behrman and told him what Johnsy had said. “What a foolish idea! I have never heard that people will die because of a falling leaf. Poor Johnsy!” After saying that, they went upstairs. They looked out of the window at the ivy vine. A cold rain was falling. The next morning, there stood one ivy leaf. “It’s the last one,” said Johnsy, “it will fall today, and I’ll die.” At night, the wind began to blow. The next morning, the leaf was still there. “Something has made that last leaf stay there. It’s wrong to want to die,” said Johnsy to Sue, “please bring me a little soup now.” The next day the doctor said to Sue, “She’s out of danger. You won. Nutrition (营养) and care now—that’s all.” That afternoon, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay. “I have something to tell you” she said, “Mr. Behrman died today. He was ill for only two days. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. We couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. Look out of the window! Oh, dear, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling,…” (Adapted from The Last Leaf by O.Henry) 12. In the first paragraph, who was seriously ill? A. Sue B. Johnsy C. Behrman D. The doctor 13. Why didn’t the last ivy leaf fall after the rainy and windy days? A. Because it was painted on the wall. B. Because the leaf was green. C. Because the wind wasn’t strong. D. Because it was tied to the tree. 14. The last leaf means for Johnsy. A. courage B. fear C. hope D. pride 15. According to the passage, we can infer that A. Sue asked Behrman to paint the last leaf on the ivy vine. B. Behrman was an old painter who made a lot by being a model. C. Johnsy was out of danger because of good medical care. D. Behrman was a kind and great artist who painted the last leaf. 12. B 13. A 14. C 15. C How much heat can dancers produce? 11. Bodyheat Has Become a Great Power D The Last Leaf At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. There are only five leaves left now.” “Five what, dear?” “Leaves, on the ivy vine (常春藤). “I have something to tell you,” she said, “Mr. Chopsticks are used by billions of people around the world, and they have an ancient past.
