Plants are very important living things. Life could not go if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.
Flowering plants can bear seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants don’t grow from seeds. They grow from spores. Spores are very, very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as the seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

In the United States, most children begin attending school when they are 5 years old. Public education is free and most children go to learn to read and write. But they also play games and go on trips. There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books.
The situation changes as children become older. The subjects become more difficult. Students must learn about world history, algebra (代数), and the life sciences. Tests become more common. Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard, and advance. However, most serious students only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school.
High school students who hope to continue their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the S-A-T. The test has two parts. The first part tests the students’ ability with numbers and mathematical skills. The second part tests the students’ ability in the English language.
The S-A-T test is very important. A high school student who gets a high score on the two parts of the test has a good chance to enter a top American college. For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for the S-A-T.

It was a quiet village in which there was a military camp. It was far from the towns and cities and there were some high mountains around. Of course it was a good place for training the new soldiers. But it was difficult for the young men to go outside. Mr. White, an officer of forty, was strict with them and he hardly let them leave the camp.
Once Mr. White was ill in bed. He couldn’t work and a young officer, Mr. Hunt, began to train the new soldiers instead of him. He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp. He was worried about it and stood at the gate. It was five to twelve when Mr. Hunt decided to go to the town and see what was happening with the young men. He started the car quickly and set off. At that moment the nine soldiers came back. It seemed they were all drunk. Of course they found the officer was angry.
“I’m sorry, sir,” said the first soldier. “I left the town on time. But something was wrong with my bus on my way here. I had to buy a horse and made it run fast. Bad luck! It died and I had to run back.”
And the other seven soldiers said they were late for the same reason. It was the last soldier’s turn. He said, “I’m sorry, sir. I got on a bus on time, but ...”
Having heard this, the officer became even angrier and stopped him at once. He called out, “If you say something was wrong with your bus, I’ll punish you at once!”
“No, no, sir,” said the young man. “My bus was all right, but the dead horses were in its way!”

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”
That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better.
Your eyes can tell you that glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is.
When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.
With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.
You can also feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy, such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it.
The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling.
One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have something to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch! There you can feel every thing on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you’ll really see!”
48. By touching things ________.
A. you will have a strange feeling B. you will learn how to reach out
C. you can tell the difference between them D. you can tell what colors they are
49. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Touching by Feeling B. To See or to Feel C. To See Better — Feel D. Ways of Feeling
50. When people buy things in shops, they often ________.
A. try them on first B. put their right hand on them
C. just have a look D. feel and touch them
51. Why does it say “At first, it is not easy to feel these things”?
A. The things are used by people, too. B. People are used to the things.
C. People know how to use the things. D. The things are easy to feel.

I’m not a computer expert, I have been in the field for only a short time. I never learned much in the way of science or maths. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or electronics (电子学).
Then why am I able to write about computers? I can write on this subject, because of these shortcomings (缺点). The last two years of learning have been difficult for me. By hard work I have managed to learn enough to use computers fairly well and to work with people who know a great deal more than I. Since I have learned all this at such personal cost, I would like to share my knowledge with others. More and more people want to know about computers, and want to know quickly.
The best way to learn is to take a course. However, many people do not have the time for it. They will have to find some other way to get some basic information. I hope to be able to help them by writing about some of the things I have learned myself.
I have a home computer on which I’ve learned in my own time. I have used it like a home study course. I have sat down with it day after day, night after night. I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. And I can do this work in my own home, instead of an office. Many people may soon be working on a computer at home, just as many now take in other people’s typing.
Some things about computers are easier than you may fear. First, computers are logical (逻辑的). Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after you learn the rules. Second, it’s really not hard to learn enough to use today’s machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a lot of information in your head. Finally, there are many people around you who are really skillful about computers. These people are always happy to be of help.
52. The purpose of the passage is to tell readers that, by studying computers at home, people can become ________.
A. computer experts B. writers about computers
C. computer scientists D. skilled users of computers
53. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the writer is not true?
A. She knows more than the people in her office.
B. She knows very little science or maths.
C. She knows many things about computers.
D. She can help others with computers.
54. The writer believes that many people who understand computers are ________.
A. ready engineers and scientists B. glad to help others
C. teaching computer course D. teachers
55. According to the passage, a computer can be used to help you ________.
A. take special courses in science B. take in other people’s typing
C. get other people’s secret D. do your work at home

A
Plants are very important living things.
36. The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A. plants are important for life B. plants cannot grow without air
C. there are many plants around us D. we cannot live without water
37. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Plants can be divided into two main types: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.
B. All fruits have seeds in them.
C. Seeds are protected by the fruits
D. Some plants grow from spores.
38. The word “non-flowering” in this passage means ________.
A 37. B 38. D
根据第一段“Plants are very important living things. Life could not go if there were no plants. (植物是非常重要的生物。如果没有植物,生命就无法延续)”、“So animals and man need plants in order to live. (因此动物和人类需要植物才能生存)”以及文章内容可知,文章第一段首句即点明植物是非常重要的生物,并进一步说明没有植物生命无法延续,随后解释了植物如何制造食物以及动物和人类对植物的依赖。因此,全文主旨是强调植物对生命的重要性。
【37题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. (但是有些水果根本没有种子。香蕉就是一种没有种子的水果的例子)”可知,“所有水果都有种子”这一说法是错误的。
【38题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. (如果你仔细观察你周围的植物,你会发现有两种植物:开花植物和non-flowering植物)”可知,flowering意为“开花的”,non-为否定前缀,因此non-flowering意为“不开花的”。
B
39. From the text, we can see “hitting the books” means ________.
A. working hard for the future B. studying a subject carefully
C. reading books in a hurry D. reading books with great effort
40. Which of the following statements can best express the main idea of the text?
A. The S-A-T is the most important test.
B. Education is not easy in the United States.
C. “Hitting the books” is very important for the students who want to have a bright future.
D. The more you want to learn, the more tests you have to pass.
41. American children don’t have ________ if they want to study in public school.
A. to work hard at their lessons B. to pay for the education
C. to hit the books D. to take many tests
42. The students in high school ________.
A. have to take the S-A-T
B. are free and happy
C. have to hit the books if they want to go on to college
D. don’t hit the books until they pass the S-A-T
43. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. In America the students have to pass certain tests to continue their education.
B. Young children needn’t work hard at their lessons because education is free.
C. Those who fail in the S-A-T cannot go to college.
D. The students must spend a lot of time preparing for the S-A-T.
D 40. C 41. B 42. C 43. B
根据第一段中“There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books.(在这么小的年纪,他们没有理由要hit the books)”、第二段中“Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard, and advance. However, most serious students only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school.(hit the books、努力学习、取得进步的压力越来越大。
根据第一段中“Public education is free and most children go to learn to read and write.(公立教育是免费的,大多数孩子去学习读写)”可知,美国孩子就读公立学校不需要支付教育费用。
根据第三段中“High school students who hope to continue their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the S-A-T.(希望进入大学继续深造的高中生必须参加一项名为SAT的全国专项考试)”以及第四段中“For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for the S-A-T.(出于这个原因,许多学生连续数月用功读书来准备SAT考试)”可知,高中生如果想要进入大学深造,就必须用功读书备考。
根据第一段中“Public education is free and most children go to learn to read and write. But they also play games and go on trips. There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books.(公立教育是免费的,大多数孩子去学习读写。但他们也会玩游戏和旅行。他们这么小就没有理由用功读书)”可知,原文仅提及公立教育免费,低龄孩子没必要用功读书,但并未说明低龄孩子不需要用功读书的原因是教育免费,该因果关系属于无中生有,不符合原文逻辑。

44. The military camp was built in the village to ________.
A. stop the soldiers going to towns B. stop the soldiers meeting their friends
C. train new soldiers D. make the young men live quietly
45. Mr. Hunt let nine soldiers have a holiday because ________.
A. he was kind to them B. they felt lonely
C. they had something important to do D. they were the best of all
46. The nine soldiers returned to the camp late because ________.
A. something was wrong with their buses B. their horses died on their return way
C. it took them much time to run back D. they all had drunk too much in the town
47. Which answer do you think is right?
A. The officer only believed the last soldier. B. The officer believed the nine soldiers.
C. The officer believed none of the soldiers. D. The officer wouldn’t punish his soldiers.
C 45. A 46. D 47. C

根据第二段“He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp. He was worried about it and stood at the gate. (他很了解这些年轻人,于是让九名士兵去最近的城镇度假。但夜幕降临,没有人回到营地。他很担心,站在门口)”可知,亨特先生了解这些年轻士兵,并允许他们去最近的城镇度假,说明他比较友善和体恤士兵。
【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“It seemed they were all drunk. (他们似乎都喝醉了)”可知,九名士兵回来晚是因为他们在镇上喝得太多了。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Having heard this, the officer became even angrier and stopped him at once. He called out, “If you say something was wrong with your bus, I’ll punish you at once!”(听到这话,军官变得更加愤怒,立刻拦住了他。他大声喊道:“如果你说你的公交车出了什么问题,我马上惩罚你!”)”以及士兵们编造的借口逻辑漏洞百出可推知,军官根本不相信任何一个士兵的谎言
D

54. The writer believes that many people who understand computers are ________.
A. ready engineers and scientists B. glad to help others
C. teaching computer course D. teachers

A. take special courses in science B. take in other people’s typing
