Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired (听力受损的) children for 33 years. Her first communication with hearing-impaired people was with her neighbor, Mrs Wang. One day, when Liu was playing in her house, Mrs Wang used sign language to communicate with her. But Liu couldn’t understand. Mrs Wang’s husband told Liu that Mrs Wang wanted to make her a scarf.
“I was moved by her kindness, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said, “so I decided to become a teacher for hearing-impaired students.”
At first, Liu almost gave up because of difficulties. She then thought about her neighbor and the pain on her face when she could not make people understand what she was trying to say. That made Liu stick to her dream of being a “special education” teacher and she succeeded.

One of her students, Jiang Yan, said Liu would show over 100 times how to speak just one word. She also taught the students how to wash their faces and clothes, and clip their nails (剪指甲).

With rural revitalization (乡村振兴) and the fast development of economy (经济) and technology, many Chinese villages have changed a lot. Xiajiang Village in Zhejiang Province is a good example. It has turned from a quiet and poor place into a modern and lively one, especially in housing and travelling.
In the past, villagers in Xiajiang Village lived in old houses made of wood and mud (泥). The walls were thin, so the houses were cold in winter and hot in summer. There were no clean toilets, and people had to carry water from a river far away every day. Life was hard and inconvenient. Now, with government support and more money from the growing economy, these old houses are gone. New houses stand in rows in Xiajiang Village, with bright rooms and clean yards. They use clean energy for lighting and heating, which helps reduce pollution. Villagers in Xiajiang Village now live comfortably and safely.
Travelling in Xiajiang Village has improved greatly too. Years ago, the village only had narrow dirt roads. When it rained, the roads became dirty. Villagers walked or rode bikes to the town, which took several hours. Selling produce was difficult because of bad roads. Today, wide new roads connect Xiajiang Village to the city. Buses run four times a day, and many families in the village have their own cars. More tourists come to visit Xiajiang Village and local farmers can sell their fruit and vegetables to big cities quickly. New ways of travelling bring more jobs and money to Xiajiang Village.

“If you learn math, physics, and chemistry well, you can go anywhere without fear.” This saying became popular in China because of Chen Jingrun (1933-1996), a famous mathematician. This year marks 30 years since he passed away.
Chen’s greatest achievement was working on Goldbach’s conjecture (哥德巴赫猜想). The conjecture says that every even number (偶数) greater than two can be written as the sum (和) of two prime numbers (质数). Although it appeared easy, no one could prove it. However, in 1973, Chen published a paper that nearly proved it. His achievement was the closest that anyone had ever gotten. It shocked the whole math world. A foreign mathematician once wrote to him, “You have moved mountains.”
Chen was not only smart — as his world-shaking achievement clearly shows — but also very hard-working. He worked in a tiny room of only six square meters and used mountains of scratch paper (草纸). One time, he was so lost in thought that he walked into a tree and apologized to it! He once said, “Climbing the heights of science is like climbing Mount Qomolangma. The timid (胆小的) and the lazy can never experience the joy of victory.”
Chen loved his country deeply. In 1979, he visited the United States. Foreign scientists offered him a good job with high pay, but he turned it down. He said, “My country is still poor, so I should go back to serve it.” After returning, he gave all his savings — $7,500 — to the country. He believed that Chinese scientists should fight for the honor of their nation.
Chen Jingrun lived a simple life and spent his whole life doing research to win honor for China. His spirit still encourages many young people today to study science and serve their motherland.
13.How does the writer begin the text?
A.By asking a question. B.By using a saying.
C.By giving an example. D.By showing a reason.
14.What does the underlined word “It” refer to (指代) in Paragraph 2?
A.Chen’s achievement. B.Goldbach’s conjecture.
C.Chen’s ability. D.Chen’s speech.
15.What can we infer (推断) from Chen Jingrun’s words in Paragraph 3?
A.Interest can be the best teacher of science work.
B.Success often comes from hard work and courage.
C.Mountain climbing is as difficult as math problem-solving.
D.Smart people are more likely to experience the joy of victory.
16.What is the purpose of writing the text?
A.To explain Goldbach’s conjecture. B.To introduce a great Chinese scientist.
C.To show China’s math development. D.To encourage teenagers to study math.

“Xinjiang has made amazing progress in the past 70 years.” When talking about Xinjiang’s development, people always feel proud. Over the years, Xinjiang has changed a lot in economy (经济) , culture and people’s lives. So, what has made Xinjiang develop so rapidly? 17
Protect and develop different cultures. Xinjiang is home to multiple ethnic groups (多民族) , each with unique traditions. From the lively Muqam music to the handicrafts, these cultures are treasures. 18 By protecting and passing down these cultures, Xinjiang has built a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Invest (投资) in infrastructure (基础设施) . Without good roads, railways and energy systems, development would be hard. Xinjiang has built highways and railways, like the Lanxin High-speed Railway, connecting it with other parts of China. 19 These projects make travel, trade and daily life much easier for people in Xinjiang.
Improve people’s well-being. The government has worked hard to lift people out of poverty and improve education and healthcare. Schools in remote areas now have better facilities, and hospitals provide quality medical services. 20

Famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner Zhen-Ning Yang passed away in Beijing on October18th, 2025, at the age of 103. He is not only a great scientist but also an important person who helped China’s science development.
Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui. He studied hard and later went to the United States to learn more about physics. In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize with his friend TD Lee for their new idea in science, which made the world look at Chinese scientists in a new way.
What made Yang special was his love for China. In 1971, he was one of the first overseas Chinese scientists who returned to China after a long time. He wanted to help his home country. He often came back to give talks at universities and told young students: “China needs good scientists.”
Yang did a lot for China. He helped Tsinghua University build a top research center for physics and attracted great scientists. He also gave money to other universities to encourage them to do scientific research. This shows us how much he loved science and his country.
Besides his scientific work, he wrote many important books and articles. He always said, “My dear country is China, and I will do my best for it.”
Yang is gone, but his spirit will always live in our hearts.
