What does this mean? I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused. I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board. Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an awkward expression, as if I should have known better. I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of noncomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language. Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations. But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatu barada nikto. 1.What did the author probably meet with? A.Hearing loss. B.Culture shock. C.A language barrier. D.A frightening robot. 2.What makes the author fall behind in language? A.Learning needs. B.Teaching tasks. C.Age difference. D.Language abuse. 3.What does the author think of language change? A.It is entirely avoidable. B.It is really small. C.It is very beneficial. D.It is much too rapid. 4.What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph mean? A.Reduces. B.Grows. C.Happens. D.Focuses. Passage 2 When John graduated from high school, he got a job delivering pizzas. But soon he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a night class at a local tech school to see if welding (焊接), which joins two metals together with heat, was a skill that “was going to stick”. It did. John wanted to learn everything about welding and decided he’d make welding his career. But one night class wouldn’t be enough. John went to Hobart Welding School in Ohio for real, technical training. Besides welding courses, John also took classes in subjects like metallurgy — the study of metal — and reading blueprints. He became more certain that he would stick to the job. For the past 18 years, John has been a welder. He now works for the EEW Group. The company has a big project to carry out. It’s in the process of opening a factory that will produce monopiles for offshore wind turbines (涡轮机). Wind turbines produce eco-friendly electricity. A typical day for John includes a number of tasks and skills. One minute, he’s driving a forklift. The next, he’s reading blueprints, or cutting materials. “There are a lot to deal with,” he told Time for Kids. “It’s not just welding.” John’s favorite part of being a welder is “making an honest living”. He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick to what I really want to do,” he says. “I am working for a company that is helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of the process.” 1.What did John use to be? A.A deliveryman. B.A welder. C.A driver. D.A cook. 2.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? A.What John decided to do. B.How John improved himself. C.When John learned welding. D.Why John accepted training. 3.What is John’s daily life like? A.Easy and satisfying. B.Tiring but educational. C.Busy but meaningful. D.Interesting and relaxing. 4.Which can describe John’s experience? A.Pride goes before a fall. B.One is never too young to learn. C.Action speaks louder than words. D.One should set goals and work for it. Passage 3 For decades, Xu Shuangmin had seldom explored beyond her community, limited within a comfortable 5-kilometer zone in the central city. But at the age of 67, and fresh off her retirement, she surprised everyone with a decision to travel 4,000 km northwest, starting a new chapter as a volunteer teacher. In September 2021, Xu joined a national silver-age teacher action plan, a programme launched by the Ministry of Education to take advantage of the wealth of experience and knowledge of retired educators to promote the educational quality of universities in the western regions. Most of the retired teachers come from the economically developed large cities in the central and eastern regions. However, they were not afraid of Xinjiang’s dry climate, sandy weather and relatively modest living facilities. Despite being a volunteer, the teachers work with great energy. Take 63-year-old Zhong Dakang, for instance. He works overtime and is frequently seen focusing all his attention on the computer in his office throughout the day. Due to his devotion, he often forgets to take his blood-pressure pills. Chen Xiaohe, 70, is a retired teacher from a university in Shanghai. Having difficulty walking following a car accident, he still enjoys standing in front of a class. Chen even stayed on the Karamay campus during the winter and summer vacations, preparing lessons and teaching materials. He has extended his first one-year volunteering contract (合同) to three years. The praise he received from his students might be the reason behind his decision to extend his stay. The course he teaches has often been praised for its “clarity” and being “easy to comprehend”. The term “Silver-haired Power” has emerged as one of China’s top 10 buzzwords this year. It means that the vitality of the elderly should not be held back by aging, as they deserve care and happiness, as well as opportunities to continue making contributions to society. 1.Why did Xu Shuangmin surprise everyone after retirement? A.Because she moved northwest with her family. B.Because she wrote a chapter on her community. C.Because she explored around her comfortable zone. D.Because she became a volunteer teacher far from home. 2.What is the purpose of the national silver-age teacher action plan? A.To help retired educators adapt to the climate in Xinjiang. B.To promote the construction of living facilities in Xinjiang. C.To inspire more people to live in economically developed cities. D.To improve the educational qualities of universities in the western areas. 3.What are the features of the course taught by Chen Xiaohe? A.It is clear and easily understandable. B.It is challenging and difficult to master. C.It is full of humor and interesting examples. D.It focuses on hands-on activities and practical skills. 4.What is a suitable title for this passage? A.Retirement Choices: Staying at Home or Traveling Abroad. B.Silver-haired educators: Pioneering Education Hope in the West. C.Lifestyle Challenges: Retired Teachers’ Struggles in Remote Areas. D.Western Universities: Appealing to Retired educators from Big Cities. Passage 4 Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. Her lens (镜头) inspires action and offers hope. Mittermeier’s love for nature began early. This love led her to study marine (海洋的) biology,  a field she focused on with the dream of studying whales at first. But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career (职业). “What I wanted to do was try my best to call on the whole world to understand how easily the oceans can be destroyed.” she explained. Science, while necessary, felt not enough to influence a larger population. Photography became her chosen tool. She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a call to action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment. Mittermeier’s latest book Hope shows her efforts in environmental protection. By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. The book’s 130 photographs, covering twenty years, are displayed (展示) not by geography or species, but by themes that tell the story of life on our planet. Through her work, Mittermeier continually attaches importance to the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future, Visual storytelling, she argues, is likely to encourage young people to take action quickly — not through fear but by directing attention to finding means of solving problems and celebrating victories (胜利), however small. Cristina Mittermeier’s life shows the great power of art with a purpose. Her lens catches not just what is but what could be, urging us all to act toward a future where people and nature can live peacefully. 1.What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career? A.Her interest in nature. B.Her love for photography. C.The power of science. D.The alarming scene of industrial fishing. 2.Which of the following can best describe Mittermeier? A.Creative and inspiring B.Curious and independent. C.Hardworking and calm. D.Energetic and humorous. 3.What can we learn about Hope? A.It focuses on present-day photos. B.It talks about the same species. C.It is created through shared efforts. D.It is a story book for children. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action B.Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True C.Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty D.Environmental Protection: Measures Come First Passage 5 Heman Bekele has been named TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. The 15-year-old has come up with an idea for a soap that could help treat skin cancer, and he is already working with scientists to test his idea. Heman’s family came to the US from Ethiopia when he was four. Heman remembers seeing people there working outside in the sun without proper sun protection, which may well increase the risk of skin cancer. From his parents, he had a deeper understanding of its dangers. Skin cancer can often be cured, but the treatment is extremely expensive for those poor workers. Heman’s natural curiosity led him to experiment with different materials and at the age of 7, he nearly caused a fire with a chemistry set. As he got older, he began to wonder if his curiosity could actually help make a difference. Upon reading about imiquimod, a medicine that can help fight skin cancer in the early stages, he realized it was a good way to make the medicine work through a simple bar of soap. But Heman knew that simply mixing imiquimod with soap wouldn’t work, as it would just wash away. Instead, he thought of creating a soap that contained the medicine inside super tiny “nanoparticles” (纳米颗粒) to make sure it remains on the skin after the soap washed off, allowing imiquimod to take effect. Last year, when he was 14, Heman created a video explaining his idea, and won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He is now working with scientists at Johns Hopkins University, running tests to see if the soap helps mice with skin cancer. Heman knows that it will take a long time and a lot of effort to develop his soap, but he’s excited about the work. He also encourages other young people to contribute. “Just keep inventing and thinking of new ways to improve our world and make it a better place,” Heman says. 1.What drove Heman Bekele to create the soap? A.His curiosity about skin cancer. B.His desire to develop a new medicine. C.His family’s history of skin cancer. D.His concern for unprotected workers outdoors. 2.Why does Heman use nanoparticles in his soap? A.To make imiquimod affordable B.To make imiquimod easier to use. C.To help imiquimod stick to the skin. D.To help imiquimod spread faster. 3.Which of the following best describes Heman according to the text? A.Curious and creative. B.Focused and frank. C.Understanding and modest. D.Efficient and generous. 4.What can be the suitable title of the passage? A.Fight against skin cancer. B.Be a gifted teenager. C.Follow a medical career. D.Meet a young scientist. Passage 6 For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead. As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the options limited. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work? With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. The day the post was put out, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation. Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes. In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post. 1.How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bike shop? A.He was angry at the theft. B.He became eager for a new bike. C.He would rather find his old bike. D.He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes. 2.Why did Pruitt put a call? In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment. Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then. My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced. Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all. 1.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph? A.His good grades got him a good job. B.He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely. C.His views on social values are well known. D.The work in community service. 4.Why does the author want to major in social work at university? A.To gain a well-paid job. B.To give his life a purpose. C.To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D.To better help the disadvantaged. Passage 8 How fast can someone climb 15 meters — the height of a five-story building? The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds. The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route — a 15-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddrig Leonardo. People have given Cao many nicknames, such as “fastest man in China” and “Chinese Spider-Man”. According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can differ every time due to its highly demanding and stressful nature. In this race, two climbers compete at the same time, and since it’s a sport that finishes within seconds, achieving success requires perfection. Athletes must have the right balance of focus, confidence and courage to take risks. “Keeping a level head is the key,” Cao said. “Everyone wants to win. But the more you want it, the more likely you’ll mess up. Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won’t do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight.” Cao went on to note, “You just have to find the right balance.” But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport. Cao took his first step into the world of climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids starting out, he mainly focused on bouldering (抱石岩) and lead climbing (先锋攀岩), doing well in both. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, Cao had surgery after injuring his left arm in a competition. It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts. It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. “I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top.” said Cao. 1.What can we learn from the passage? A.Cao focused on bouldering and lead climbing at the age of 18. B.Cao is nicknamed ”fastest man in China” for creating a world record. C.Cao thinks speed climbing can be influenced by the tough natural environment. D.Cao is the first person in China to finish the speed climbing 15-meter-tall route within 5 seconds. 2.What does “keep a level head” mean in paragraph 4? A.Expect to win. B.Keep body balance. C.Keep the head up. D.Stay calm. 3.Why did Cao choose speed climbing? A.Speed climbing affects his body less. B.He did much better in speed climbing. C.He thought speed climbing was more attractive. D.It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing. 4.Which of the following can best describe Cao? A.Outgoing and confident. B.Brave and creative. C.Determined and strong-minded. D.Modest and curious. Passage 9 During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience. On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event. One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again. Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter. 1.Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms? A.To stand out in the crowd. C.By comparing different views on Olympics. D.By sharing personal stories and experiences. Passage 10 Being the strong wife and mother that she is, Diana Register often hid her deep pain and suffering from those around her. In the weeks and months following her husband’s cancer diagnosis (诊断) Diana would search for “hiding” places where she could let the uncontrollable waterfalls of tears flow from her eyes. “The storage room was a favorite. Then was the shower. But when I wasn’t home, it was the parking lots that served as my hiding places,” she said. After her husband passed away, parking lots were Diana’s safe haven (避风港) for pain and sorrow. One day, as she was about to place her order in the Dutch Brothers coffee drive-thru, the wave of sadness hit her like a tidal wave in the middle of her conversation with a friend. “I could hardly catch my breath and the ugly crying started,” said Diana. “The problem was, I was stuck in the coffee line. At Dutch Brothers. The one place where all the workers are young, happy and jamming out to music. And there was no way out. I was literally blocked in, so unless I wanted to back right up into the SUV behind me, I was about to be seen for the mess I really was.” The barista, who was making and serving coffee at the window, handed Diana an iced coffee with a sweet and simple note on the top. “When I looked down in the cup holder, I saw it. A pink straw, and the words ‘We love you’ written around it.” The girl didn’t know Diana’s pain or her story, but she knew she was hurting and couldn’t fix it. “She wanted me to know I wasn’t alone. Two childhood best friends who were “joined at the hip” as kids were reunited over a half century later—when they least expected it. Irene Gresty and Janet Henderson were neighbors in the 1940s, growing up in England, but like many friends, they lost touch over the years. After getting married, Gresty moved with her husband who was in the navy and was shipped to many foreign places. However, Gresty, despite living in many countries, loved her own country. Gresty said, “I loved the area where I grew up, so I wanted to settle down to enjoy retirement (退休).” Thanks to an event hosted by Bield Housing and Care, a non-profit organization devoted to supporting residents over 55 years old, finally they met each other. Gresty said, “We sat down beside each other and she turned to me and said ‘Is that you Irene?’ and I just laughed and said ‘Yes. Are you Janet?’ ” They couldn’t believe that they were meeting each other after so long. They spent the rest of the afternoon talking to each other. Henderson said that it is usual in life for people to often move away from the area and lose contact. As their family names changed, Henderson couldn’t recognize her friend’s name despite being told about her. The two have promised to never stay long without seeing each other. They exchanged numbers so they could meet in the future. They have many years to catch up on everything they have missed. 1.What does the underlined part “joined at the hip” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Grow fast. B.Work hard. C.Hang around. Passage 12 Today, we study literature (文学) from a young age-learning about our histories, worlds and influential people. Whether we notice or not, these stories guide us throughout our lives. They allow us to see the world through another’s eyes, open up our world and teach us about every subject known to man. Although they are important, many people throw out their old books laying waste the wisdom that lies on each page. Try to save this knowledge and share it with people, a garbage man (清洁工) in, Bogota, Colombia has been saving thrown-away books for 20 years and sharing them with those in need. “I hated to see all the books in the dustbins of wealthier neighborhoods. So I started to rescue them,” said Gutierrez. The first book he found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy The Tolstoy book was later joined by The Little Prince, Sophie’s World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected around 25,000 books. His growing collection didn’t go unnoticed. Gutierrez’s neighbors were soon borrowing the books to help with their children’s homework. “There was a lack of them in our neighborhood, so we started to help.” said Gutierrez. The ground floor of Gutierrez’s home is now filled with books, from floor to ceiling. He opened it up as a free library, with the help of his wife Luz Gutierrez and their three children. Passage 13 Every New Year, many people make promises to themselves, only to see them fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, or even days. However, 26-year-old Luke Cameron is not among those people. After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet. Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to £4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need. Cameron has created a series of some cards, which he has called “Cards for Kindness”. Each card suggests a simple act of kindness — things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds. Cameron’s generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man as he nears the end of his journey, pizza chain Domino’s recently awarded him a year’s supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the big-hearted young man has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity. His kind deeds have also won him a competition for the job of “National Philanthropy (慈善事业) Manager”. 1.What made Cameron decide to do good deeds every day? A.The need of a competition. B.The requirement of his job. C.The influence of his families. D.The death of a close friend. 2.What is the second paragraph mainly about? A.The influence of simple acts of kindness. B.The good things that Cameron has done. C.The importance of having close friends. D.The prizes that Cameron has received. 3.Why did Cameron create “Cards for Kindness”? A.To record his good deeds. B.To make peace with an enemy. C.To raise money for some charities. D.To encourage people to show kindness. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.No Pains, No Gains B.The Power of Dreams C.A Good Deed Every Day D.The Best Man in Britain Passage 14 My mother always said, “You young men should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” It seemed like a tough task. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July in 2017.I jumped at the opportunity and secured an inexpensive ticket. Excitement was at its peak as I approached the train station on the morning when my 22-day adventure was to begin. I jumped on board the passenger vessel (车厢)like it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. The train headed west in search of our first destination — the scenic town of Banff, Alberta. After just an hour on the train, desperation already came on me. The thought of three full days on those tracks broke my spirits. As I gazed out towards Lake Superior’s glistening (闪闪发亮)waves, I decided if I was to be stuck in here, I would need to enjoy my time. Those three days turned into a summer camp on rails. Real friendships with the crew were born within that train. Stops were made in small, remote railroad villages. A large group of strangers turned travelling companions would rush towards the villages to reward our endless patience with local cuisine. At night, we would walk to the glass-domed (玻璃穹顶)train car, which gave a scenic view of the night sky, untouched by light pollution. After three days, we arrived in Banff. Before my adventure of taking the train across Canada, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. But that is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination. 1.What made the author’s train trip possible? A.The encouragement from his mother. B.The attraction of the splendid scenery. C.A time-limited ticket offer for youths. D.His determination to face the tough tasks. 2.What did the author experience after one hour on the train? A.Great joy. B.A dream-like trip. C.Unrealistic hopes. D.Faded enthusiasm. 3.Which of the following best describes the author as a young man? A.Considerate. B.Adaptable. C.Smart. D.Determined. 4.What has the author learned from his adventure? A.To enjoy travelling on his own. B.To be content with train service. C.To skip to the final destination. D.To explore more in the process. Passage 15 High school was a hard time for Me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (选拔)for the school's team because I didn't know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. The coach Mr Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves. He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday. but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court. After thinking for a few minutes. I finally decided to have a try. On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practice before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my math which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently. I will never forget Mr Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school. 1.Why did the writer shoot baskets on the school playground? A.Because he was preparing for the tryout for the school's team. B.Because he wanted to show off his moves to the coach. C.Because he missed the bus and had nothing to do. D.His high school life. Passage 1 The classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still includes an impressive character — a frightening robot (Gort) whose terrible actions are under control only when he is ordered, “Klaatu barada nikto”. A.Reduces. B.Grows. C.Happens. D.Focuses. 根据第一段中“What does this mean? I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.(这是什么意思? 但当我无意中听到学生们互相交谈时,我也常常会感到困惑)”和第二段中“But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.(但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘语言之船似乎已经起航,而我却没有登船)”可知,作者可能遇到了语言障碍。故选C。 2. 根据第二段中“One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.(其中一个“问题”是,随着时间的推移,我变老了,但我的学生仍然是18到22岁。 根据第四段中“I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.(我并不反对改变,但当改变的速度让我竭尽全力才能跟上时,我就会感到不舒服。 根据划线词上一段“I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.(我庆幸自己至少还对他们谈论的内容感兴趣,也庆幸自己多半能听懂他们的解释)”及划线词前的But可知,此处与前文构成转折关系,(但如果我的兴趣减弱了,语言之船最终消失在地平线上,会发生什么呢? A。 Passage 2 When John graduated from high school, he got a job delivering pizzas. 根据第一段“When John graduated from high school, he got a job delivering pizzas.(约翰高中毕业后,找到了一份送披萨的工作。)” 根据第二段“It did. He became more certain that he would stick to the job.(结果证明,焊接确实是他愿意坚持的技能。 根据倒数第二段“A typical day for John includes a number of tasks and skills. One minute, he’s driving a forklift. The next, he’s reading blueprints, or cutting materials.(约翰典型的一天包括许多任务和技能。 和最后一段“He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick to what I really want to do,” he says. “I am working for a company that is helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of the process.”(他也为帮助环境而感到自豪。 D。 Passage 3 For decades, Xu Shuangmin had seldom explored beyond her community, limited within a comfortable 5-kilometer zone in the central city. 根据第一段“For decades, Xu Shuangmin had seldom explored beyond her community, limited within a comfortable 5-kilometer zone in the central city. But at the age of 67, and fresh off her retirement, she surprised everyone with a decision to travel 4,000 km northwest, starting a new chapter as a volunteer teacher.(几十年来,徐双敏很少走出她的社区,被限制在市中心一个舒适的5公里范围内。 根据第二段中“In September 2021, Xu joined a national silver-age teacher action plan, a programme launched by the Ministry of Education to take advantage of the wealth of experience and knowledge of retired educators to promote the educational quality of universities in the western regions.( 2021年9月,他加入了‘国家银龄教师行动计划’,这是教育部发起的一项利用退休教师丰富的经验和知识来提升西部地区高校教育质量的计划。)” 根据第四段中“The praise he received from his students might be the reason behind his decision to extend his stay. The course he teaches has often been praised for its “clarity” and being “easy to comprehend”.(他从学生那里得到的赞扬可能是他决定延长停留时间的原因。 故选A项。 4. 根据文章大意以及最后一段“The term “Silver-haired Power” has emerged as one of China’s top 10 buzzwords this year. It means that the vitality of the elderly should not be held back by aging, as they deserve care and happiness, as well as opportunities to continue making contributions to society.( “银发力量”一词已成为今年中国十大流行语之一。 Passage 4 Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. A.Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action B.Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True C.Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty D.Environmental Protection: Measures Come First 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.A 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据文章第二段中的“But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career.(但很快她就看到了工业化捕鱼的破坏性影响,这导致了她职业生涯的改变)”可知,是工业捕鱼的破坏性影响导致了Mittermeier职业的改变。故选D。 2. 以及第三段中“She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a callto action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment.(她发明了一种“视觉医学”形式的作品,在环境问题的严重性与呼吁行动之间取得平衡。 故选A。 3. 根据文章第四段中的“By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. A。 Passage 5 Heman Bekele has been named TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. A.To find his lost bike. B.To raise some money for charity. C.To collect old bikes. D.To advertise his bike repair shop. 3.Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt? A.Responsible and humorous. B.Caring and inspiring. C.Outgoing and brave. D.Considerate and loyal. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure B.A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker C.Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman D.A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike 【答案】1.D 2.C 3.B 4.D 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中“As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the options limited. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work? 根据第二段中“Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. 根据第二段中“He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. Pruitt还发起了一项号召,向人们征集闲置的自行车——他会将这些自行车免费修理好——然后捐赠给那些真正需要自行车但无力购买的人)”和最后一段中“In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power (Pruitt当然是在提供一种服务,但不是自行车。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work? Passage 7 I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. D.He is content with his scholastic achievements. 2.Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship? A.A helper. B.A judge. C.A monitor. D.A supporter. 3.What is the greatest accomplishment for the author? A.The contribution to volunteering. B.The success in exams. C.The recovery of confidence in life. D.The work in community service. 4.Why does the author want to major in social work at university? A.To gain a well-paid job. B.To give his life a purpose. C.To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D.To better help the disadvantaged. 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.A 4.D 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中的“I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. 根据文章第二段“The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route—a l5-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. 根据文章第四段“Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won’t do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight.” Cao went on to note, “You just have to find the right balance.” But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport.(过于冷静,试图避免任何错误也不会对你有任何好处,因为这种心态会夺走你的优势和战斗的意愿。” 根据文章第五段“It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts. 故选A。 4. 根据文章第五段“It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts.(正是在那次手术之后,曹决定尝试一下速度攀岩,因为它需要不同于抱石和攀岩的技术,而且对他之前受伤的身体部位的压力更小)”以及最后一段“In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. “I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top.” said Cao.(在他看来,创造4.98秒的全国纪录已经成为过去。“我会继续努力工作,爬上我的顶峰。”曹说)”在受伤之后,依然坚持攀岩以及在创造4.98秒的全国纪录之后继续努力工作,冲刺顶峰。由此推知,曹是意志坚定和坚强的。故选C。 Passage 9 During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. B.To show love for athletes. C.To fit in with the venues. D.To stand for their countries. 2.What do we know about Guo? A.She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work. B.She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics. C.She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work. D.She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer. 3.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics, B.To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers. C.To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games. D.To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events. 4.How is the text mainly developed? A.By listing the benefits of volunteer work. B.By discussing historical Olympic events. C.By comparing different views on Olympics. D.By sharing personal stories and experiences. 故选A。 2. 根据文章第二段““I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24- year- old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology.(24岁的郭来自中国中部湖北省武汉市,正在巴黎数字技术学院学习无线通信。 根据文章第二段“On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. The Tolstoy book was later joined by The Little Prince, Sophie’s World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected around 25,000 books. His growing collection didn’t go unnoticed. Word finally spread around about Gutierrez and his books. Most of the books now come from donations. He now travels around the country delivering free books to poor and remote areas. Whether we notice or not, these stories—both fiction and non-fiction—guide us throughout our lives. They allow us to see the world through another’s eyes, open up our world and teach us about every subject known to man.(今天,我们从小就开始学习文学——学习我们的历史、遥远的世界和有影响力的人物。 根据第三段“The first book he found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina.(他找到的第一本书是一本经典小说《安娜·卡列尼娜》)”可知,托尔斯泰的《安娜·卡列尼娜》一书是Gutierrez收集到的第一本文学书籍,是他的免费图书馆的起点。故选B。 3. 故选A。 4. 根据文章第二段“In an effort to save this knowledge and share it with those less fortunate, a garbage man in, Bogota, Colombia has been saving thrown-away books for 20 years and sharing them with those in need.(为了保存这些知识并与那些不幸的人分享,哥伦比亚波哥大的一名垃圾管理员20年来一直在保存废弃的书籍,并与那些有需要的人分享)”以及后续内容可知,本文主要讲述清洁工Gutierrez搜集旧书籍,为孩子们筹建免费图书馆的事情,B项“清洁工用抢救出来的书建造一座图书馆”最能体现此意。故选B。 Passage 13 Every New Year, many people make promises to themselves, only to see them fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, or even days. A.No Pains, No Gains B.The Power of Dreams C.A Good Deed Every Day D.The Best Man in Britain 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.D 4.C 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 由第一段中的“After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.(2013年,这位以慷慨著称的好朋友因癌症去世。 由第二段“Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to £4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.(2014年1月1日,Cameron做了他的第一件好事,在他参观的一家咖啡馆里,他简单地问候了一位女服务员。 由第三段中的“Each card suggests a simple act of kindness -- things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.(每张卡片都暗示了一件简单的善举——比如给陌生人一个拥抱,或者与敌人讲和,这些都是为了鼓励别人做好事。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“After losing a close friend known for her generosity  and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed  every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.(2013年,这位以慷慨著称的好朋友因癌症去世。 C。 Passage 14 My mother always said, “You young men should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” It seemed like a tough task. 根据第一段中的“But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July in 2017.I jumped at the opportunity and secured an inexpensive ticket.” 根据第二段中的“After just an hour on the train, desperation already came on me. The thought of three full days on those tracks broke my spirits.” 根据第二段中的“As I gazed out towards Lake Superior’s glistening waves, I decided if I was to be stuck in here, I would need to enjoy my time.” 和第三段中的“Those three days turned into a summer camp on rails. Real friendships with the crew were born within that train.” 根据最后一段中的“I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.” D。 Passage 15 High school was a hard time for Me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. D.Because he wanted to make new friends while playing. 2.What is the most probably reason for which the writer wouldn’t go to the tryout? A.He should study very hard. B.He didn’t think he played well. C.He knew no one in the school. D.His class teacher told him not to. 3.What does the underlined phrase “make the team” most probably mean in Paragraph 3? A.Join the team. B.Leave the team. C.Organize the team D.Lead the team 4.What does the writer mainly talk about in this passage? A.His tryout at school. B.His present life. C.His basketball coach. D.His high school life. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time.(有一天,一切都改变了,我错过了回家的巴士,决定在学校操场上投篮来消磨时间。) I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (选拔)for the school's team because I didn't know anyone.(我喜欢打篮球,但不敢参加校队的选拔,因为我一个人都不认识。) 根据下文and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. 故选A。 4. I will never forget Mr Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.(我永远不会忘记科尔巴斯先生。 I will never forget Mr Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.(我永远不会忘记科尔巴斯先生。
