Get ready for the 2026 Graceful Envelope Contest — this year’s theme is Courage and Creativity. Please note that your submission includes two parts: the entry envelope and the carrier envelope.
Requirements for the Carrier Envelope: We ask that all contest entry envelopes (≤7×9 inches, with original artwork and calligraphy) be placed inside a plain carrier envelope (any size, no external art) that is clearly marked on the front with the contest address (see below) and with correct postage (邮资).
Stamps: The 2026 contest will continue to require at least one stamp on the contest entry envelope (preferably one that integrates with the design), but it need not have the full correct postage. For student entries mailed together by a teacher, postage on the contest entry envelope is not required. However, integration of at least one stamp into the design does strengthen a submission.
Information:
Write your name, address, email, contest division (Adult, Grades 9-12, Grades 5-8) and Instagram account (if you wish, for winner publicity) on the back of the Entry Envelope. Incomplete information will cause disqualification.
Submission & Evaluation
Deadline: All carrier envelopes must be submitted by May 31 or they will be disqualified.
Address: The Graceful Envelope Contest, P.O.Box 3688, Merrifield, VA 22116.
Judging Criteria: Entries are judged only on the FRONT based on the contest theme, calligraphy, design, and stamp use.
Prizes: Winners receive certificates and online publication.
A Judge’s Perspective
My advice to entrants is to think outside the box regarding the theme — reject the most obvious ideas! Really let yourself go in thinking of different approaches to the subject. I see each entry envelope as a natural integration of three parts: solid lettering; creative design or illustration; and stamps relating to the theme.
1. What can a carrier envelope be like?
A. B.
C. D.
2. What will definitely disqualify a student from the contest?
A. Mailing the entry on May 30. B. Leaving out the participant division.
C. Lacking the Instagram account. D. Turning in an unstamped entry envelope.
3. What does the judge suggest the participants do?
A. Integrate natural elements. B. Adopt traditional ways.
C. Highlight innovative thinking. D. Explore diverse subjects.

For three decades, Camilleri, a Canadian fashion designer, had made a name for herself dressing A-listers. Her beautiful, delicate styles from leather, to evening wear, to custom other showed in the covers of the hottest magazines.
But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her disabled in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community. “I had no idea that someone in a chair had any different clothing needs than you or I,” says the designer. “The world was my market because nobody had ever done this before.” In 2004 Camilleri opened a store specially for people who use wheelchairs.
“Everything we do, the starting point is from a seated frame. So what happens when you’re sitting? What happens to the clothes? Where are they getting together?” Camilleri explains. “We really had to recreate the patterns to suit a seated frame.”
Her custom creations have changed lives. Winkelaar has been in a wheelchair since a car accident two weeks before his fourth birthday. Until he met Camilleri, he lacked confidence in his appearance and was afraid of entering the clothing stores because he had trouble finding trousers that fit properly. Salah has spastic cerebral palsy She says clothing stores are always daunting places full of pieces out of reach. Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. Being able to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity.
“Camilleri’s pieces are now part of an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, and her success in a new rare market has not gone unnoticed in the mainstream fashion world. She is a truly brilliant technician. She puts fashion and confidence within reach of the disabled,” Canadian television personality and fashion critic Jeanne Beker says.
4. What drives Camilleri to open a store?
A. Making a profit. B. Seeking fame.
C. Meeting a challenge. D. Providing service.
5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4?
A. Frightening. B. Inspiring. C. Comforting. D. Striking.
6. Which of the following can best describe Camilleri?
A. Ambitious and hardworking. B. Caring and far-sighted.
C. Determined and conventional. D. Creative and stubborn.
7. What message does Beker want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Camilleri is a highly original thinker. B. Camilleri is a successful fashion pioneer.
C. Camilleri is a critical technician leader. D. Camilleri is a productive market advisor.

根据第二段“But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her disabled in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community.
和下文“Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. Being able to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity. (萨拉表示,现在的她举止不同了,对自己的外表也更有自信。能够穿上既时尚又实用的衣服,让她感受到了极大的尊严。”)”可知,之前前往服装店总会让Salah感到畏惧,因为那里的衣服总是高高挂起,遥不可及。由此可知,daunting意为“令人畏惧的,令人害怕的”。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her disabled in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community. In the animal kingdom, counting skills are known to help grab bigger meals or find safety in group sizes. But clownfish may have uncovered another “value” in numbers: identification.
Despite their cute appearance, clownfish are territorial and aggressive When they spot a member of their own species moving towards their place, they attack, biting and throwing out unwelcome visitors. There are 28 different species of clownfish, however. So how do they actually tell friends from enemies?
Depending on the species, clownfish can have anywhere from zero to three white stripes (条纹). Previous research suggested the fish pay close attention to these markings. In a 2022 study, scientists found clownfish display more aggressive behavior (e.g., running after or biting others) toward fish with vertical (垂直的) stripes compared with those with horizontal stripes.
This time around, ecologist Hayashi and colleagues assumed the fish could actually count those stripes. They placed 50 young, lab-raised common clownfish — which display the typical orange pattern like “Nemo” (a clownfish with three stripes from the film Finding Nemo) — into individual water tanks. Then, the researchers added other clownfish species, which had white stripes ranging from 0 to 3 and were protected inside a see-through case, in the original clownfish’s territory and filmed their reaction. The “native” fish couldn’t run after or bite the newcomers, but they could still rush them and stare them down. And that’s what happened when the newcomers wore the same number of stripes as the resident clownfish.
They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes. Those fish were run after and bitten 10 times more than those without stripes. Attacks on those fish were two times more frequent than on single-striped ones, and 1.3 times more frequent than on double-striped ones. It turned out that the researchers’ assumption had solid evidence.
Even so, biologist Rhodes questions whether the animals are really counting or just noticing more white coloration on the attacked fish. “Maybe researchers could further clarify clownfish’s calculating capacity,” adds Rhodes. “An experiment that goes beyond stripes could help. Could these fish learn, for example, to prefer two squares to three squares?”
8. What new use of counting skills have clownfish demonstrated?
A. Building up a large group. B. Making out potential threats.
C. Finding reliable food sources. D. Measuring the size of their territory.
9. What did the 2022 study about clownfish focus on?
A. The way they defend their territory.
B. The diversity of their stripe patterns.
C. The impact of their aggression on other species.
D. The role of stripe patterns in their behavioral reaction.
10. Which of the following is a Nemo-like clownfish most likely to attack?
A. A three-striped fish. B. A double-striped fish.
C. A fish with one stripe. D. A fish without stripes.
11. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Rhodes in the last paragraph?
A. To point out the significance of the study.
B. To lead to an alternative viewpoint on the study.
C. To show appreciation of clownfish’s learning ability.
D. To support the researchers’ findings about clownfish.
B 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第一段“In the animal kingdom, counting skills are known to help grab bigger meals or find safety in group sizes. But clownfish may have uncovered another “value” in numbers: identification.(在动物界,计数能力已知可以帮助动物获取更多食物或者依靠群体规模保障安全。但是小丑鱼或许发现了数字具备的另一重“用处”:辨别识别。)”以及倒数第二段“They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes. Those fish were run after and bitten 10 times more than those without stripes. Attacks on those fish were two times more frequent than on single-striped ones, and 1.3 times more frequent than on double-striped ones. It turned out that the researchers’ assumption had solid evidence.(他们发现,本土小丑鱼对拥有三条白色条纹的同类最为凶狠。这类同类遭受追逐撕咬的次数是无条纹小丑鱼的十倍。针对它们的攻击频次是单条纹小丑鱼的两倍,是双条纹小丑鱼的1.3倍。事实证明,研究人员的猜想拥有可靠依据。)”可知,小丑鱼依靠条纹数量区分同类、发起攻击,也就是分辨潜在威胁。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In a 2022 study, scientists found clownfish display more aggressive behavior (e.g., running after or biting others) toward fish with vertical (垂直的) stripes compared with those with horizontal stripes.(在2022年的一项研究中,科学家发现,相比带有横向条纹的鱼类,小丑鱼对带有竖向条纹的鱼会表现出更强的攻击行为,例如追逐、撕咬。)”
根据第四段“This time around, ecologist Hayashi and colleagues assumed the fish could actually count those stripes. 以及第五段“They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes.(他们发现,本土小丑鱼对拥有三条白色条纹的同类最为凶狠。)”
根据最后一段“Even so, biologist Rhodes questions whether the animals are really counting or just noticing more white coloration on the attacked fish.(即便如此,生物学家罗兹提出疑问:这些鱼类是真的具备计数能力,还是仅仅注意到被攻击鱼身上有更多白色区域。)”

Having to find a toilet during long road trips is, now, no longer a pain as Chinese electric vehicle engineers are prepared to roll out a fleet of cars featuring built-in toilets. They’re putting a little restroom in your vroom-vroom.
Seres, Chinese carmaker specializing in high-end electric vehicles (NEVs) and intelligent technology, has been granted a patent for what it calls an “in-vehicle toilet” that slides under a passenger’s seat for mid-trip use. The feature is meant to “satisfy users’ toilet needs on long journeys, while camping or while staying in the car,” according to the patent Seres filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration.
And, as if the ability to relieve yourself while on the run isn’t cool enough, the carmakers reportedly plan to equip the loo (马桶) to appear with either the push of a button or through voice-activated commands. To limit strong, unpleasant smells, the loo comes with a fan and an exhaust pipe, implemented to channel smells out of the car. Waste is collected in a tank that has to be emptied manually. The toilet also boasts a rotating heating element that evaporates urine (蒸发尿液) and dries other waste. When not in use, the toilet is hidden beneath the seat, making full use of the space inside a car without requiring more room.
Seres, based in Chongqing, has not announced an official release of vehicles with the onboard bathroom. It’s unclear if cars boasting the luxurious toilets will ever, actually, hit the Chinese electric vehicle market. It’s a booming industry with innovators claiming to pump out the trendiest, most futuristic frills (配置), including everything from the ability to fly down NYC roadways at over 200 MPH to literally flying in the sky.
In-vehicle toilets, however, are much more rare, but not totally unprecedented. A 1954 car Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Limousine, featuring a passenger seat pot by Joseph J Mascuch, sold for $150,000. The brainchild of the inventor from New Jersey makes it possible for travelers in their luxurious rides to finalize deals from the inbuilt telephone before taking a bottle from the gold-plated toilet-cum-champagne cooler under the seat cushion.
Now that’s taking a leak in luxury.
12. Why does Seres roll out cars with built-in toilets?
A. To match car telephones.
B. To beat other carmakers.
C. To promote intelligent technology.
D. To meet users’ toilet needs on trips.
13. Which aspects of in-vehicle toilet does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. Price and market.
B. Origin and history.
C. Design and function.
D. Brand and competition.
14. Why is Joseph J Mascuch mentioned?
A. To promote his latest invention.
B. To explain how to make a car toilet.
C. To show his fame in the car industry.
D. To prove in-vehicle toilets are not novel.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Futuristic Frills: Built-in Toilets in EVs
B. Granted Patent: Groundbreaking revolution
C. Flying Vehicles: Amazing Traffic Innovation
D. Outdoor Travel: Convenient Camping Equipment
D 13. C 14. D 15. A

Nothing is worse than needing rain and then having a number of storms finally roll through only to leave your yard full of standing water. Fortunately, the easiest way to manage such issue in your yard is creating a rain garden.
____16____ They normally contain pollinator-friendly native plants because they have deeper roots than non-native decorative plants. So they are better able to absorb water instead of allowing it to pool and sit on the surface.
Even if standing water isn’t a problem, rain gardens offer other advantages. Because they contain native plants, they provide habitats for important pollinators and attract more birds to your yard. ____17____ After a storm, runoff from your yard picks up rubbish and sometimes chemical pollutants, carrying them downhill to the nearest waterway. A rain garden stops this overflow by trapping the water and using soil and plant roots to purify it. ____18____ This also prevents flooding, as it keeps heavy rainwater from rushing into waterways all at once.
Then how to make your own rain garden? ____19____ It’s easiest to choose an area that’s already lower than the rest of your yard and tends to collect water. However, you’ll also want to make sure the rain garden is at least 10 feet from your house and away from any underground facilities or tree roots.
Once you’ve found the perfect place, it’s time to dig your garden and choose your plants. It’s a good idea to plant a mixture of different kinds of plants. Luckily, because they’re full of native plants, rain gardens don’t need much care besides some weeding and watering during the first year. ____20____
A. To get started, select the right location.
B. All done, just relax and enjoy a better environment.
C. Many people love growing vegetables in their yards.
D. The clean water then recharges groundwater supplies.
E. Rain gardens can also help protect local water systems.
F. Rain gardens are easy-care plots in low-lying yard areas.
G. But remember to design one based on local rainfall conditions.

上文“A rain garden stops this overflow by trapping the water and using soil and plant roots to purify it. (雨水花园通过截留雨水、利用土壤和植物根系净化水质的方式来阻止这种溢流。)”讲了雨水花园净化雨水的作用,下文“This also prevents flooding, as it keeps heavy rainwater from rushing into waterways all at once.
上文“Then how to make your own rain garden? (那么如何建造自己的雨水花园呢?)”以问句形式引出建造雨水花园的话题,下文“It’s easiest to choose an area that’s already lower than the rest of your yard and tends to collect water. (选择一个已经比院子其他地方低且容易积水的区域是最容易的。)”具体讲如何选择位置。空处应承接上文的问题,引出建造的第一步——选址。A选项“首先,选择合适的位置”中的“To get started”承接上文的问题,“select the right location”与下文的“choose an area”形成同义呼应,逻辑衔接自然。
上文“Luckily, because they’re full of native plants, rain gardens don’t need much care besides some weeding and watering during the first year.

分析句子可知,句中identify the right buds、pick carefully、work through each step of processing是三个并列的动作,作teach的宾语补足语,并列结构中最后一个动作前需加并列连词and。

Ranking My Career Choice Essentials
When choosing a future career, I rank the three key factors in this order: interest and passion, salary and self-development, and social recognition and expectations.
Firstly, passion is the core driving force. It keeps us motivated to overcome difficulties and stick to our career long-term. Secondly, salary and self-development matter greatly. While a salary that is decent can guarantee our life quality, constant self-improvement is what sustains long-term career growth. Lastly, I put social recognition last. Others’ expectations are external and should not limit our personal career planning.

Asher loved spending time in his grandfather's garden. Every evening, he carefully held the watering can as his grandfather showed him how to pour just the right amount on each plant. “These plants need us, Asher,” Grandpa often said. “If we take care of them, they will take care of us.”
Asher loved plants. He loved their bright green leaves, the way they danced in the wind, and how fresh they smelled after rain. Plants made him feel calm and safe. But when it came to people, Asher was not so confident. At school, he was one of the quietest kids. While others laughed and played loudly, he often sat alone, unsure how to join them.
One afternoon during break, Asher walked past the big oak tree (橡树) near the playground. A group of kids stood nearby, pulling leaves from its lower branches and throwing them into the air. “Look! Leaf rain!” one of them shouted, laughing.
Asher’s chest tightened. He loved trees. He knew that leaves helped trees breathe and grow. He wanted to say something, but fear held him back. What if they laughed at him? What if they ignored him? After a moment, he turned away and walked back to the classroom without saying a word.
That evening, Asher sat in the garden with his grandfather, watering the plants as usual, but his mind was not at peace. His silence did not escape Grandpa. After a while, Asher shared what had happened at school and how he felt. He explained that he wanted to protect the tree but did not feel brave enough.
His grandfather listened carefully. He told Asher that courage does not mean being fearless. It means doing what is right, even when fear is present. He reminded Asher that change often begins with one small voice and one brave choice. Those words stayed in Asher’s mind all night.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The next day during break, Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before.

The kids soon agreed to Asher’s suggestion.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day during break, Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before. This time, he didn’t walk away. His heart pounded, but Grandpa’s words echoed in his mind: courage means doing what is right even when you are afraid. Taking a shaky breath, Asher stepped forward. “Hey,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Please stop.” The kids turned, surprised. “Leaves help trees breathe,” Asher continued, trying to sound calm. “If you pull them all off, the tree could get sick and die.” For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then one boy dropped the leaf in his hand. “Really?” he asked. “I never thought about that.” Asher nodded, feeling a small wave of confidence. “Instead of hurting it,” he suggested, “we could protect it together.”
The kids soon agreed to Asher’s suggestion. They fetched cardboard and bright markers from the classroom and made a large sign that read, “Protect Our Tree — It Gives Us Shade and Clean Air.” Together, they tied it to the oak tree. Over the next few weeks, the group took turns watering the tree and picking up litter around it. Asher no longer sat alone during break. He stood and laughed with his new friends under the spreading branches. One afternoon, Grandpa came to pick him up and saw the sign. His eyes shone with pride. “You see, Asher?” he said quietly. “You took care of the tree, and the tree brought you friends.” Asher smiled, feeling the warm sun and an even warmer sense of belonging. He finally understood: when we take care of plants, they take care of us in ways we never expect.
