I recently moved back to my hometown, York, a small city in England. It has a long history and a lively culture, but not many trees for shade. In recognition of urban trees’ benefits, the city plans to plant 4,000 trees, starting with the creation of two “micro woods” near the city center. However, planting thousands of trees doesn’t guarantee success. It’s important to choose carefully what to plant and where and — to care for what’s already there.
One of the main benefits of urban trees is that they keep cities cool by providing shade and transpiration. This cooling effect will only become more important as the climate warms. In the meantime, however, climate change is threatening urban trees. Ecologist Stephan Pauleit and his team found a major increase in tree death rate during summer heatwaves. The loss of mature trees is a major problem. According to Pauleit, an 80-year-old tree cools the air and stores carbon ten times better than a 20-year-old one.
There are other threats, including invasive species. Two species of longhorn beetles (天牛), for example, can eat a tree to death. A study found that a serious outbreak of either of these harmful insects could kill a quarter of the trees in some cities. These problems are worsened by the limited diversity of urban trees. In some cities, just five species account for three quarters of trees. Such trees are tried and tested choices, but as the climate warms, they may no longer be fit for purpose.
Thus, cities need to plant with the future in mind. Researcher Henrik Sjoman has identified candidates like the chestnut-leaved oak and Lebanese wild apple that tolerate extreme conditions the best.
I went to one of the micro woods in York. There are about 50 saplings (幼树) that will take decades to mature. I am rooting for them, but I fear the world where they are growing up won’t be kind to them.
24. What does the author think is vital for the tree planting plan?
A. Preserving the existing trees.
B. Creating more urban micro woods.
C. Developing a lively local culture.
D. Replacing the badly damaged roots.
25. What do we know about urban mature trees?
A. They survive heatwaves better.
B. They stop the climate from warming.
C. They show a stronger cooling effect.
D. They recover from insect attacks faster.
26. What has led urban forests to higher risks?
A. Random choice of trees.
B. Poor variety of trees.
C. Inability to store carbon.
D. Frequent outbreaks of new insects.
27. What can be inferred about the newly planted saplings in York?
A. They may soon provide enough shade.
B. They can tolerate extreme conditions.
C. They can prevent longhorn beetles.
D. They may face challenges in the future.

A newly engineered molecule (分子) acts like a “rechargeable” solar heat battery, storing sunlight and releasing it on demand. Solar energy has one persistent weakness: it disappears at sunset. Finding a reliable way to store that energy for later use remains one of the biggest obstacles to expanding renewable power.
A research team at UC Santa Barbara may have found an unexpected workaround. Instead of relying on conventional batteries, they created a small organic molecule that captures sunlight, locks that energy into its structure, and releases it later as heat.
To understand the idea, Nguyen points to a familiar example. “Think of photochromic sunglasses (光致变色太阳镜). When you’re inside, they’re just clear lenses. You walk out into the sun, and they darken on their own. Come back inside, and the lenses become clear again,” Nguyen said. “That kind of reversible change is what we’re interested in. Only instead of changing color, we want to use the same idea to store energy, release it when we need it, and then reuse the material over and over.”
To build this molecule, the researchers turned to DNA for inspiration. The pyrimidone structure (嘧啶酮结构) resembles a DNA component that can reversibly change its form when exposed to UV light. By creating a synthetic version, the team designed a molecule capable of repeatedly storing and releasing energy. They worked with Ken Houk, a distinguished research professor at UCLA, using computational modeling to understand how the molecule can hold energy while remaining stable for years.
“We prioritized a lightweight, compact molecule design,” Nguyen said. “For this project, we cut everything we didn’t need. Anything that was unnecessary, we removed to make the molecule as compact as possible.” Unlike solar panels that generate electricity, this system stores solar energy in chemical form. The molecule behaves like a coiled spring. When exposed to sunlight, it shifts into a strained, high energy configuration. It remains in that state until triggered by heat or a catalyst, which allows it to return to its original form and release the stored energy as heat.
“We typically describe it as a rechargeable solar battery,” Nguyen said. “It stores sunlight, and it can be recharged.” The critical breakthrough for Han’s group was translating high energy density into a tangible result. In the study, the researchers demonstrated that the heat released from the material was intense enough to boil water — a feat previously difficult to achieve in this field.
28. What is the key solution to solar energy’s biggest limitation?
A. Using conventional batteries to store solar power.
B. Applying the new organic molecule to store heat.
C. Saving sunlight for nighttime electricity production.
D. Updating solar devices to generate power nonstop.
29. Why did the researchers simplify and compact the structure of the molecule?
A. To copy the basic form of natural human DNA.
B. To guarantee its high energy density for boiling water.
C. To improve its practical performance in real-life application.
D. To prevent it from changing forms under strong sunlight.
30. Which diagram best shows the molecule’s energy storage and release process?
A. B.
C. D.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Daily Applications of Advanced DNA Technology
B. Simple Methods to Produce Boiling Water
C. An Innovative Molecule: Rechargeable Solar Heat Storage
D. Comparison Between Solar Panels and New Batteries

Pictures and videos of all sorts of animals regularly go viral these days because people connect with the apparent joy, friendship and playfulness of these animals. Unfortunately, the initial enthusiasm of these posts is often squashed by someone rightly noting that the animal’s reaction is not joy or pleasure, but fear, anger or pain.
The reason we often get cases like this wrong is that we interpret the emotional content of many behaviors automatically and unconsciously. This is a version of anthropomorphism: interpreting animals as we would interpret another human. The standard view has been that anthropomorphism is primarily an error of overestimating the intelligence of animals. In recent decades, many authors have pushed back against this attitude towards anthropomorphism, arguing animals are a lot like us and that many “anthropomorphic” claims about animals are actually true.
Instead of getting caught in a black-and-white debate, however, I want a more complicated, informed discussion of competing ideas. Once we agree that animals do in fact, have emotions, we can acknowledge that the anthropomorphic mistake is not seeing emotion where there is none — it is seeing the wrong emotion.
Each of us has a set of perceptual, emotional and cognitive capacities that allow us to engage and understand one another socially. These capacities help guide and structure all sorts of interactions, and we are generally not even aware we are using them. They are generally, but not perfectly, tuned for human interaction. Things can get messy, though, when we use them to interpret animals. Perhaps the best-studied version of this is the primate (灵长类动物) “grin”. The animal is not happy, it turns out. The exact signaling function varies by species, but it usually signals something more like fear or anxiety, often by a submissive individual in a tense social situation. This is, in fact, anthropomorphism, because you are interpreting an animal’s behavior in the same way we would interpret human behavior. This kind of anthropomorphism is a form of cognitive bias (偏见) resulting from shortcuts taken by our reasoning processes, usually without our awareness.
We should approach the topic of anthropomorphism from the angle of bias. Traditionally, assumptions about how and when people anthropomorphise have been so fixed that the psychology did not seem worth investigating. Slightly different attitudes can be found. For example, even though they advocate for anthropomorphic views of animals, the zoologists Jesus Rivas and Gordon Burghardt memorably note that it can be tricky: “Anthropomorphism comes in many forms and can catch you off guard!” While the recognition of “many forms” is progress, it makes the need for evidence-based research only more pressing. By focusing on implicit (隐性的) anthropomorphism, we shift attention from debating specific “humanlike” features to examining the deeper psychological mechanisms that make anthropomorphism so slippery. This, I believe, is the most challenging and most significant dimension of the problem.
32. What does the word “squashed” underlined in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Awakened. B. Discouraged.
C. Misguided. D. Underestimated.
33. What can we learn about anthropomorphism?
A. It turns animals’ negative emotions into positive ones
B. It underrates the emotional capacities of animal species.
C. It contributes to the shortcuts of our reasoning processes.
D. It reflects the projection of human qualities onto animals
34. The author quotes Jesus and Gordon to ________.
A. confirm the value of anthropomorphism
B. highlight the complexity of anthropomorphism
C. warn us of the limitations of anthropomorphism
D. remind us to view anthropomorphism positively
35. What does the author intend to do by writing this passage?
A. Propose a fresh perspective. B. Analyze a worrying tendency.
C. Evaluate the credibility of a theory. D. Explore the origin of a phenomenon.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I’m dancing on top of a mountain after 570m of elevation (海拔) gain. I want to scream.
36 But it’s because of joy — overcoming the discomfort of an illness to arrive at this spot. As a university student, I struggle with exhaustion and poor vision. I would avoid events and barely had any social life. Gradually, people stopped asking if I was depressed, because everybody was sure I was. After more than 10 years of medical consultations, I was finally able to say to people, “ 37 I suffer from a disease called myasthenia, which causes the muscles to become weak and the body to experience extreme tiredness.”
The diagnosis (诊断) was a relief, but it came with a price: 38 I started to travel alone way before my diagnosis. I’ve always felt the need to explore. I honestly don’t know where my desire to travel came from. It’s always been there.
But how could this possibly fit with my condition? My mind was spinning at the mere thought of not being able to travel and discover the world. The first four months after the diagnosis were a nightmare. I went on a strict diet and took pills. Everyone around me was constantly checking in on me. 39 I wanted to feel tired — to put my body under stress and see what would happen. I wanted to be scared by the unknown because this is the beauty of life. So I did it in my own way, following my body’s needs and carefully choosing to break some rules.
That’s how travel has helped strengthen me. I didn’t want to let a disease define my identity and control me. I wanted to prove that a positive attitude can be a pass to a better life. 40
A. I am not depressed.
B. And I’ve made it now.
C. My cheeks are wet with tears.
D. The trust from them brought a ray of hope.
E. Doctors confirmed I was suffering from depression.
F. Intense physical exercise may take away my ability to move freely.
G. But I decided I would never allow the disease to influence the rhythm of my life.

In my personal life, I shy away from the spotlight even though I make a living on TV. I’d much rather 41 someone else, making a big deal out of their birthday instead of my own.
That is why I tried hard to 42 my wife, Deborah Roberts, out of throwing a party for my seventieth birthday. The truth was, I was feeling 43 about turning 70. My dad passed away at 69. Whenever reminded of the 46 when he left us forever, I felt sad. 47 , I too almost didn’t make it to 70.
It was a fall in 2022 when I got really 48 out of nowhere. My Apple watch said my heart rate was 164. I wasn’t sure what to 49 it. The next thing I knew was that I woke up with severe abdominal (腹部的) pain at hospital.
Doctors discovered I was bleeding internally, and decided to do exploratory surgery to 50 the problem and fix it. When I was 51 from the hospital, my family gathered on my doorstep to welcome me back. I had never been 52 during the treatment, but then I lost it. I shouldn’t stop Deborah from doing 53 big for my birthday. The 54 was more about celebrating the people who love me and letting them know how much I love them. In the dusty corner of Grandpa’s attic (阁楼), I came across an old, worn violin case. Puzzled, I opened it, only to find a violin that looked like a piece of abandoned firewood. Its strings were broken, and its wooden body was covered with deep scratches (划痕). To me, a teenager who had been struggling with modern violin pieces, this instrument surely carried a hidden piece of history within it. Driven by curiosity, I carefully carried it down the narrow stairs and placed it on the living room table.
“Why do you keep this junk, Grandpa? It is broken,” I asked, pointing to the case. Grandpa stopped, his eyes softening as he took the violin. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he gently wiped the dust off the surface with his trembling hands, as if he were looking at a long-lost friend. “This ‘junk’, as you call it, was my only companion during the years when I worked on the remote farm,” he began, his voice filled with emotion. “Music was a bridge that carried me from the exhaustion of labor to a world of peace. It taught me that as long as you have music in your heart, no hardship can break you.”
Looking at the rough calluses (茧子) on Grandpa’s fingers, I felt a sudden pang of guilt. I had always complained about my violin lessons being boring and difficult, never knowing that for Grandpa, the chance to play music was a hard-won luxury. That night, I made a decision. I would use my savings from my part-time job to have the violin restored.
The next day, I took the instrument to Mr. Miller, a master violin maker known for his “magic touch”. He warned me that the restoration would be a long process. Every weekend, I visited his workshop, watching him carefully glue the cracks and restring the instrument with precision. Meanwhile, I practiced the piece Grandpa loved most, The Moon Over the Fountain, on my own violin every night, preparing for the upcoming school talent show, and made up my mind to give Grandpa a surprise.

第四部分 写作(满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Make Full Use of Our Labor Practice Base
Our school’s labor practice base has been left idle for a long time, which is a great waste of valuable resources. The fields are overgrown with weeds, and the farming tools are covered with dust.
To make full use of it, I suggest that we organize regular gardening activities where students can grow vegetables and flowers. Besides, we could invite biological teachers to give outdoor lessons there, turning the base into a living classroom. Moreover, the produce can be donated to the local community.
I sincerely hope our school will take action soon to change the base into a meaningful place.
第二节 (满分25分)
With Mr. Miller’s help, the old violin finally regained its former shine. Its wooden surface shone warmly, and the new strings produced clear and soft notes. Holding the violin in my arms, I felt a unique flood of warmth. It was no longer a worn-out piece of wood, but a precious treasure bearing Grandpa’s memories. Then I hurried home to present it to Grandpa. His eyes lit up with surprise and joy when he saw the renewed violin. He touched it gently, tears welling up in his eyes. When I told him that I decided to give my performance with his violin at the talent show, Grandpa first felt surprised, and then nodded proudly.
The day of the school talent show arrived as scheduled. Stepping onto the stage with the violin, I took a deep breath and began to play The Moon Over the Fountain. Seated in the front row, Grandpa wore a soft, tender smile, his eyes fixed gently on me. The music flowed through the hall, carrying Grandpa’s hard-won hope and my new understanding of music. When the last note faded, thunderous applause erupted. At that heartfelt moment, I came to realize that music is far more than mere notes and melodies — it is an enduring spiritual strength that helps us.

M: My brother’s gone to Mexico for two weeks. I had a chat with him yesterday and he seemed to be having a good time with his friend from England. And the weather is nice there. Why don’t you go there?
W: That’s OK for you well-off people, but I couldn’t possibly afford it as a working-class person.
M: Then I think you could go to Ireland. I hear it’s very beautiful.
W: Sounds good! I’ll go there.

W: Mr. Smith is coming to take a look around our factory to see if it’s big enough to satisfy his demands. If he is satisfied, there is a good chance that he will sign a deal with us today.
M: I really hope that will happen. The business this deal will bring is huge.
W: Don’t worry too much. After all, we have everything he requested over the phone. Our production capacity, storage space, and quality control measures all meet his high standards. Anyway, let’s set off a bit early to pick him up at the airport.
M: That sounds like a good idea. We don’t want to get stuck in rush hour traffic and be late for his arrival.

W: People say that it’s everyone’s job to “give back” to society. I think that’s why you do the volunteer work, right?
M: That’s true. You know I was quite busy at work but I never felt I was doing good to the world. Through volunteer work, everything is different.
W: Since you like volunteer work so much, why didn’t you work in a charity organization?
M: When I was in college, I had dreams of helping others in need. However, my father lost his job later and I needed to make money for my family. So I worked in a hotel as an accountant right after college even though it was not my dream job.
W: I’m glad that you’ve had your dream come true. How did you find the job?
M: I called this organization that’s helping the poor sick children and then I sent my information to them. A few weeks later, I met my students for the first time. I have been teaching them English since then.

W: Good evening, Mr. Jindal. Thank you for joining us tonight. First, could you tell us about your experience in the contest called "This Time, You Are the Champion"?
M: Certainly. It was in the year 2002. I was a recent college graduate and I couldn’t even pay my graduation fees. Then I decided to enter the contest because I knew I would receive $2,000 if I won. Luckily, I won.
W: Did it bring any changes to your life?
M: Yes. The winnings not only allowed me to pay off my loan for college but it helped me make the Travel Talk app. The win also made me a bit of a celebrity in my small town, bringing me invitations to speak at local functions. On the whole, winning the contest was a great experience for me.
W: Do you have any suggestions for those who want to enter the contest?
M: Yes. First, you should learn well about the rules. Second, you should read different kinds of materials to enrich your knowledge.
W: Well, Mr. Jindal, thank you again for joining us in tonight’s program.
M: The honor is all mine!
