Unit 2 Getting along Writing Learning Objectives In this lesson, you will: 1. learn the structure of a story. 2. write a short story about understanding between people. 3. share your story about understanding between people with the class. It shows the basic elements and the structure of a story: when where who what problem solution what we can learn Analyze Liuchixiang’s story using the mind map. When did the story happen? It happened in the Qing Dynasty. Where did the story happen ? It happened in Tongcheng, Anhui province. Who were in the story? The Zhangs and the Wus. What problem did the characters face? The two families argued over the dividing line between their houses, and they didn’t reach an agreement. How did the characters solve the problem? Each of the family gave up three chi to their neighbour out of kindness. What does the story teach us about relationship? Kindness can bring more kindness. Have you ever had or watched an argument or conflict （冲突）? What was it about and how was it solved? Free Talk Step 1: Think of an argument or conflict you have ever experienced. Organise your ideas by answering the following questions. When did the story happen? Where did the story happen ? Who were in the story? One Monday afternoon. Tom and Jerry. In the library. What problem did the characters face? Both of them wanted to borrow the only copy of their favourite book, but the library couldn’t lend it to both of them at once. How did the characters solve the problem? They decided to read the book together that day. What does the story teach us about relationship? In friendships, it’s important to be kind and think of each other. Step 2: Write about your story with the help of the chart. What tenses can we use when telling a story? We can use either the simple present tense or the simple past tense. Sample Writing One Monday afternoon after school, Tom and Jerry were in the school library. They both wanted to borrow the only copy of their favorite book. Since the library couldn’t lend it to both of them at once, they started arguing about who should borrow it first. Tom soon calmed down. He suggested they read the book together in the library that day. Jerry thought it was a good idea. Then they found a quiet corner and read the book together.  This story shows that in friendships, it’s important to be kind and think of each other. By working together, we can solve problems and keep our friendships strong. Sometimes, sharing isn’t just about giving something up—it’s about gaining something even better. Step 3: Check.
