Unit 6 Live green
Developing ideas
Learning Objectives
In this lesson, you will:
1. listen for the main idea and specific information about upcycling, recycling, and precycling.
2. identify definitions and comparisons.
3. talk about green living ideas and compare different ways to reduce waste.
Look and Say
What do they pictures show?
The pictures show the three key green environmental ideas:
Reduce: make less waste and cut down unnecessary use.
Reuse: use old items again for new purposes.
Recycle: turn waste into new reusable materials.
Did you know?
The green idea of "3Rs" (reduce, reuse and recycle) is important for managing waste."Reduce” means cutting down the use of things. "Reuse" means using something again. "Recycle" means making waste into useful material to make new things.
Listen to the radio programme and choose the main idea.
1
a Upcycling allows people to change the environment.
b We can upcycle anything we like.
c Upcycling is a creative way of reusing old things.

Phonetics in use
Unstressed words in sentences (2)
Function words are often unstressed in normal speech. If we stress them, the meaning can change. For example, we can use our creativity to give old things a second life. (A strong "our” suggests that
we, not others, are responsible.)
Listen and decide which words are stressed and which are unstressed.
1 Pollution from factories and cars makes our air dirty.
2 By recycling paper and plastic, we can reduce waste in daily life.
3 Green living helps keep the earth clean and safe for everyone.
Now listen again and repeat.

$Smartphones make our lives easier. We use them every day to study, work and communicate. That's true, but they can also cause problems. What do you mean when old smart phones are thrown away, they become e waste. We can find harmful materials inside e waste. These materials are bad for the environment. That sounds worrying. so it's Better to use our smart phones for a longer time and deal with them properly.
One, pollution from factories and cause makes AA dirty. Two, by recycling paper and plastic, we can reduce waste in daily life. Three, Green living helps keep the earth clean and safe for everyone.
World environment day. Have you heard about world environment day? IT comes every year on the fifth of due IT makes people aware of environmental problems. IT gets people like you and me to take action to protect our planet. The theme of world environment day changes every year. For example, in nineteen nineteen seventy six, the theme was about the importance of water to in nineteen and eighty nine, the focus was on global bombing. Two thousand and twenty two march, the fifty fifth birthday of this day, the theme was only one of a different country, hosts the celebration each year, and presents a theme. In two thousand and nineteen, china hosted IT with the theme of beat air pollution. Special events and activities are held to celebrate the day people create works of large plant trees and clean up the community. The day gives us a chance to think more about protecting the environment. However, we should care for our planet not only on this day, but every day of our lives.
Today we have professor and upcycling expert. welcome. Thank you. Can you tell us . the difference between up cycling and recycling? How are they different? That's a good question. Recycling means breaking waste into materials to make new things. For example, if a glass is recycled, is broken, heated and turned into a new thing. what about up cycling? Cycling doesn't break things. Instead, we think of new uses for them. For example, we can put a candle in a glass and make IT a lantern. Which do you think is Better for the environment? Professor. well, I think upcycling is Better. Recycling uses more energy than upcycling. What's more, upcycling is easy. Also, IT can save money. For example, we can turn an old shirt into a new dress or a bug instead of ying. Sounds great. I will try up cycling at home.

The company grew and built a road connecting the city with the village. Next, people threw dead animals and litter into the whole, no matter what dirty things people threw into IT. The whole took them all. The whole gave piece of mind to everyone. No one thought about the results of their actions. The whole cleaned the city. The sea and sky became as clear as glass. Everyone became proud of their city businesses, created tall new buildings, throwing any waste into the hole. One day, a worker was on top of a building. Plastic, good or bad? When plastic was invented around the eighteen sixties, IT was considered an amazing material. IT was light, easy to shape, long lasting and cheap. IT quickly replaced wood and other natural materials. Many people believe plastic would make life Better back then, some people even so. Plastic as an environmental hero. Not surprisingly, plastic has now filled our lives. We can find IT in bags, bottles, toothbrushes, gloves, mobile phones, cars, houses. You name IT. IT is certainly convenient and has thousands of uses. Despite this, IT is slowly and quietly shown its dark side. Plastic waste was first seen in the oceans in the nineteen sixties. Since then, IT has become a danger to see animals. Some animals such as whales, eat IT by mistake and die. The former hero kills more than one hundred thousand sea animals every year. By twenty fifty, there could be even more plastic than fish in the sea by weight. Plastic is also causing problems on land. Birds wings get tied in plastic lines. Bears heads get stuck in plastic beans. Cows mistake plastic bags for food. Even humans are eating plastic waste. On average, we eat five grams of plastic a week. That's a whole bank card. Tiny pieces of plastic are found in the air we breathe. They can be Carried around by the wind. There is even plastic snow at the north and south poles on planet plastic. There is no place free from this. Plastic waste is hard to deal with. IT may take hundreds of years to break down. Therefore, hiding the waste in the ground doesn't solve the problem. Burning IT also produces thick smoke that causes air pollution. Plastic makes life easier for many people, yet IT brings long lasting troubles to planet. Our choices today change the world tomorrow. With no planet b to turn to, we must think clearly and use plastic wisely.

Unit 6 Live green
Starting out & Understanding ideas
Learning Objectives
In this lesson, you will:
1. grasp the core vocabulary of the topic, fully understand the passage, and be able to talk about the pros and cons of plastic.
2. practise skimming and scanning reading skills, and finish related comprehension tasks independently.
3. develop critical thinking about plastic pollution, raise environmental protection awareness, and know how to live a low-plastic, plastic-free life.
Look and Say
What green living ideas are shown in the picture?
In the picture, I can see a girl riding a bicycle and a man running. There is a modern high-speed train, recycling bins, lots of green plants, and sea animals. It looks like a beautiful, clean and environmentally friendly place.
Starting Out
Look at the picture and answer the questions.
1 Do you know any themes of
World Environment Day?
2 What do people do on World
Environment Day?
World Environment Day is on June 5th every year. It is a day to remind people to take care of our planet. On this day, people around the world do things to help the environment, like planting trees, cleaning up trash, or saving water. The United Nations started this day in 1974. Each year has a different theme, such as "Beat Plastic Pollution" or "Restore Our Earth." The goal is simple: protect nature and make Earth a better place to live.
Look at the posters and answer the questions.
1 What special days are shown in the posters?
2 What do these special days have in common?
World Wetlands Day is on February 2nd every year. It is a day to teach people why wetlands are important. Wetlands are places like swamps, marshes, and bogs. They are home to many animals and plants. Wetlands also help clean water and stop floods. This special day started in 1997. On this day, people learn how to protect wetlands and use them wisely.
World Oceans Day is on June 8th every year. It is a day to celebrate the ocean and remind people to protect it. The ocean covers most of our planet and is home to many fish, whales, corals, and other sea life. It also gives us food and oxygen. On this day, people do things like cleaning beaches, reducing plastic use, and learning about sea animals. The United Nations started this day in 2008.
International Day of Forests is on March 21st every year. It is a day to celebrate forests and trees. Forests are home to many animals, birds, and insects. They give us clean air, fresh water, and wood. On this day, people plant trees, learn about forests, and find ways to stop cutting down too many trees. The United Nations started this day in 2012.
Understanding ideas
Look at the picture and answer the questions. Use the words and expressions to help you.
1
1 Where can you find plastic in the picture?
2 What problems can plastic cause?
1. We can see plastic in the sky and ocean, on the land, and even around sea animals. There is plastic waste in the water and on the seabed.
2. Plastic does not break down easily. It pollutes the whole environment of the sea and land. It hurts sea animals, makes our ocean dirty, and it is bad for our Earth. We need to work together to solve the problem.
Free Talk
1 Do you often use plastic things in daily life?
2 What do you use the most?
3 Do you think plastic is good or bad? Why?
Read the passage and find out whether plastic has made life better or worse.
2
Plastic made life better in the beginning, but now it has made our environment and our planet’s life much worse.
1 When plastic was invented around the 1860s, it was considered
an amazing material. It was light, easy to shape, long-lasting and
cheap. It quickly replaced wood and other natural materials. Many people believed plastic would make life better. Back then, some people even saw plastic as an“environmental hero”.
2 Not surprisingly, plastic has now filled our lives. We can find it in bags, bottles, toothbrushes, gloves, mobile phones, cars, houses... you name it. It is certainly convenient and has thousands of uses. Despite all this, it has slowly and quietly shown its dark side. Plastic waste was first seen in the oceans in the 1960s. Since then, it has become a danger to sea animals. Some animals, such as whales, eat it by mistake and die. The former“hero” kills more than 100,000 sea animals every year. By 2050, there could be even more plastic than fish in the sea by weight.
3 Plastic is also causing problems on land. Birds’wings get tied in
plastic lines. Bears' heads get stuck in plastic bins. Cows mistake
plastic bags for food! Even humans are eating plastic waste! On
average, we eat five grams of plastic a week. That's a whole bank
card! Tiny pieces of plastic are found in the air we breathe. They
can be carried around by the wind. There is even plastic“snow”
at the North and South Poles. On “Planet Plastic", there is no
place free from this.
4 Plastic waste is hard to deal with. It may take hundreds of years
to break down. Therefore, hiding the waste in the ground doesn't
solve the problem. Burning it also produces thick smoke that
causes air pollution.
5 Plastic makes life easier for many people, yet it brings long-lasting troubles to our planet. Our choices today change the world tomorrow. With no Planet B to turn to, we must think clearly and use plastic wisely.

Think and Share
1 Which problem of plastic do you find most shocking? Why?
The most shocking problem for me is that plastic pollution has even reached the North and South Poles. Plastic can travel all over the world with wind and water, and there is even plastic "snow" there. It shows that plastic waste has already polluted every corner of our planet, and no place on Earth is free from it. This is really terrible and makes me feel very worried about our environment.
2 Do you think humans will ever stop using plastic? Why or why not?
I don’t think we will completely stop using plastic. Plastic is very useful, cheap and we need it in medicine, technology and many important things. But with new green technology, we can use much less plastic and make better choices to protect the environment.
Learning to think for question 2 To think about the future of plastic, you should consider things like environmental problems, new technologies and how people feel about plastic.
Reflection
What can we do to reduce the plastic pollution and how can we go plastic-free?
Use reusable bags instead of plastic bags.
Bring our own water bottle—stop buying plastic bottles.
Say no to plastic straws —use paper or metal ones.
Avoid single-use plastic like cups, plates, and cutlery.
Choose products with less plastic packaging —buy in bulk or glass jars.
Recycle properly—sort plastic waste and clean it before recycling.
