Day 1 LV's trademark case against Molly Tea sparks heated debate
LV起诉茉莉奶白商标侵权,赢了官司,输了人心 词数 360 阅读时间 5分钟
Is it right for a foreign brand to claim "ownership" over a traditional Chinese cultural symbol? Many are asking this question after Louis Vuitton (LV), a French fashion brand, won a trademark case against Molly Tea, a popular Chinese milk tea chain on June 29.
The case centers on the similarity between Molly Tea's logo and LV's motifs, both of which feature a four-petal flower. The court in Jiangsu that handled the case ruled in favor of LV, ordering Molly Tea to stop using the symbol, apologize, and pay LV 10.3 million yuan.
Despite the court victory, LV faced public backlash. Many noted the striking resemblance between LV's design and the baoxiang flower, a floral pattern common in ancient Chinese art. Some internet users also shared photos of similar patterns on the walls of their family homes. "Maybe LV should sue me too," they joked.
The court's decision follows the first-to-file principle, which gives trademark rights only to the earliest applicant, Beijing-based lawyer Kang Lixia told China Daily. LV registered its design in China in 1986, long before Molly Tea's creation in 2021. During that time, LV's wide use of the pattern had earned it the status of a "well-known trademark", which receives broader-than-usual protection. That is why Molly Tea, operating in an entirely different business than LV, was still sued.
However, public anger goes beyond legalities. Many people are concerned about cultural appropriation - the disrespectful or exploitative use of elements from another culture. "It results in cultural misuse or appropriation when a company uses other cultures' elements without understanding their meanings, acknowledging their origins, or giving back to the local artists," Guangming Daily noted. The case also highlights how modern trademark laws, developed mainly by Western countries, can sometimes help Western companies profit from cultural appropriation within the context of globalization.
This is why improving national legal frameworks is important. In 2022, Mexico adopted a law requiring companies to obtain consent from local communities before commercially using their cultural elements. Another strategy is defensive protection, which involves documenting traditional knowledge in online databases to prevent false claims, said the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Day 2 Fitness class teaches deeper lessons
敢于到场,便是最好的开始 词数 360 阅读时间 4分钟
In every gym class I've taken, I felt like the odd one out. Opening the door, I hesitantly asked, "Is this where the HIIT class is?" The high-intensity interval training instructor yelled, "Grab a dumbbell and yoga mat. We're late for warm-up!" Breathing heavily on the mat, I wasn't sure if I'd make it through the hour.
Glancing around the room, I seemed to be the only one struggling. Everyone else, in their tightly fitted gym wear and not a drop of sweat to be seen, looked as if they belonged. I, on the other hand, with my messy hair and oversized clothes, wondered why I had ever bothered coming.
Earlier that year, I had decided to give fitness a real shot. All my life, exercise had been a foreign concept and in school, gym class was a place of guaranteed embarrassment and humiliation.
I nervously showed up to my university gym for spin class on a Sunday morning. I had considered canceling multiple times, but I told myself that showing up was all that mattered.
The first time I tried to stand on the bike pedals, I felt my legs shake and immediately sat down. But with each class, my comfort on the bike grew and I became less focused on how I looked and more focused on looking inward. Whether I needed to think about something bugging me, dream about the future or just mindlessly pedal, spin class became my hour a week just for me.
The more I spun, the more I realized how powerful my body was. For what felt like the first time, I was proud of my body's capabilities.
After nine months of spinning, I wanted to challenge myself again. And that's how I found myself in the high-intensity class. If spin class got me used to moving my body, then HIIT class taught me that I have to continuously work to build my fitness and tackle my insecurities.
In all, what truly matters is showing up, not what you wear or your fitness abilities. Because once you show up, the rest gets easier, one sweaty adventure at a time.

Day 3 Classics keep civilizations going
如今我们为何还要读经典? 词数 420 阅读时间 5分钟
In both the Greek and Chinese traditions, the classics are not just collections of theories cut off from real life. They hold wisdom about how to run a state, develop good character, keep social order, face suffering and live a meaningful life.
Many of these classic works were written during times of great social change, when people questioned the future of their civilizations. Plato wrote The Republic after a period of chaos and following the death of his teacher, Socrates. In it, he asked how justice could be achieved and how society could be governed fairly. Similarly, The Analects of Confucius took shape during a period when political division and a loss of values challenged the existing social order. Confucius traveled from state to state, hoping to find the right moral and political principles for society.
Civilizations often return to their classical traditions at times of major change and cultural revival. This can be seen in the collection and study of Greek texts during the Hellenistic era (323-31 BC), the rediscovery of many Greek and Latin works during the Renaissance, and the rise of German classical studies in later centuries. Every such revival in Western history relied on returning to the classics. Likewise, China's Han, Tang and Qing dynasties launched major official projects to preserve and look at the classics in a new light.
These efforts were not simply acts of nostalgia. They help societies that are changing fast find cultural continuity and a reliable sense of moral direction. As a young nation with no ancient heritage of its own, the US has looked to Greek and Roman classics as vital cultural roots. Robert Hutchins, president of the University of Chicago, established a core general education program centered on works by Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil and other classic authors. He was convinced that modern society needs shared access to civilization's core ideas.
Studying the classics helps people look beyond narrow policy debates and ideological conflicts. It points people toward deeper questions: justice, education, morality, social order and human nature. Close reading and historical interpretation remind us to treat classics as living sources of thought, not just quotes used to support modern agendas.
Most notably, classical thought offers an alternative to the influential "clash of civilizations" theory put forward by the US political scientist Samuel Huntington. Greek philosophers stress universal reason and personal excellence. Confucianism stresses benevolence and ethical bonds within family. Both show that harmony doesn't mean we are all the same, but that dialogue between civilizations is possible because humans share the same moral and rational capacities.
Returning to the classics can therefore help civilizations step back from competing for power and instead talk to one another as equal partners in a shared human conversation.

The plane pushed through walls of sleet as it came into Manchester. I had a sinking feeling about returning to the city where I grew up after living abroad for so long. A few days later, on my way to get a haircut, my mind miles away, a pigeon suddenly fell to the ground in front of me, twitching.
It happened just as kids were leaving the local primary school. "Daddy, she needs a hospital. Can we call an ambulance?" asked a small child. I immediately became that ambulance for this pigeon that had just landed abruptly, as I had days before.
Little did I know that caring for Belinda (as I called her) would lead me to a network of Mancunians providing not only ambulances for wild pigeons but X-rays, care and even "pigeon physio". I discovered the Manchester Pigeon Rehab Facebook group, a community of over 3,000 dedicated to rescuing pigeons, run entirely on goodwill.
Belinda was diagnosed with neurological problems, likely a head injury, and assigned to a rehabilitation center for care. I took up the role of pigeon ambulance once more, taking Belinda across the city to get the care she needed.
After this experience, I began to feel better about being back home. It also dawned on me that this was not the first time I'd been involved in a pigeon rescue: Almost 20 years earlier, a friend had rescued a pigeon in our school playground. The friend had since died, and I realized that this had been a big part of what had made returning home so hard.
Pigeons have a history as "emotional support animals" in the north of England, offering comfort to miners and unemployed workers. Yet, they're often seen as nuisances today. Before I found the rehab group, a vet had suggested "euthanizing it".
It? Not our Belinda. Although unlikely to ever fly again, she has taken to her newly grounded life in a volunteer's spare bedroom. Each happy coo, often brought out by her favorite treat, frozen peas, feels like a lesson in adaptability and strength - and I am forever grateful to her for showing me another side to the city I thought I knew.
