The lines on a map help you find the best route from one place to another. You use lines to draw pictures. ________ You can see lines in the grain (纹理) of a piece of wood or in the cracks on a sidewalk. You can see lines outside a building or in the field. Lines are used to create words, numbers, and symbols. They are also used to create art. In drawing, line is an element (要素) of art that is the path of a moving point through space. Artists use lines to lead your eyes through a work of art. They create lines in many ways. A line can be drawn on paper with a pencil or scratched into wet clay with a stick. Depending on its direction, a line can express different ideas or feelings. This is why line is an important element in the language of art. Lines are used to express different images in Chinese calligraphic drawing. The word calligraphy means beautiful handwriting. In China, calligraphy is used to form characters (汉字) that represent the language. However, characters are more than just a letter of the alphabet. They are like pictures. They can represent an idea, an object, or a verbal sound. Calligraphic lines are usually made with brushstrokes that change from thin to thick in one stroke. To make a very thin line, artists use the tip of the brush. As you press on the brush and more of it touches the paper, the line becomes wider. (See the painting on the right, the long, flowing leaves of the orchid [兰花] plant in the rocks are made with one flowing brushstroke. ) Now practice making calligraphic lines with ink or watercolor paint. Lang is a young master of dough figurines, known as “mian ren” (面人) in Chinese. Lang became interested in dough figurines when he was five. He grew up watching his father create lively figurines. The craft looked so magical that he wanted to try it himself. His first creation took two and a half hours but looked awful. He tried to make a cute doll, but it turned out to be an ugly, middle-aged man. Though his first try was not pleasing, he had already fallen in love with the craft. Lang’s family has been making dough figurines for three generations. His grandfather, “Mianren Lang” (面人郎), turned dough figurines from simple street toys into real works of art and exhibited his works abroad. Lang's father and aunt are also skilled masters. With their hard work, the craft was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Influenced by his family, Lang practiced hard and gradually improved his skills. In 2022, his works won high praise at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Today, many traditional crafts are in danger of disappearing. Few young people know about them. Lang often feels low-spirited because he has no peers to talk with about his craft. As more people choose “modern” jobs, the craft of dough figurines needs new inheritors. To keep the traditional craft alive, Lang works hard to promote the art of Dough Figurine Lang on social media. He brings pop culture into his creations. Some of his figurines are based on cartoon characters or famous people. He also shares short videos of his craft online. Lang hopes that in this way, more young people will be drawn to the craft and pass it down to future generations. 39.What made Lang Jiaziyu become interested in dough figurines? While people walk around in bright space, they slow down in the dark green room, sit and spend up to 15 minutes looking at the paintings-and really see them. They can also download a meditation (冥想) recording to help them.   This is a mental health (心理健康) movement the gallery has just started. In a world where various things compete strongly to catch our notice, the gallery creates a single-minded space to win back our lost attention. Museum consultant (顾问) Louise Thompson is leading the movement. She believes museums or art galleries are not just places to store and show artworks, but public spaces where people can improve their mental health.   To achieve this, people are encouraged to take notice of the objects in museums and galleries. Thompson explains that this act of taking notice is all about “being in the present moment”—a basis (基础) of mindfulness (正念). They don’t need to know anything about fine art, just pay attention to what’s in front of them. This careful and thoughtful way of looking is called mindful art viewing.   The method works well. Thompson says that visitors viewing the works in the mindful room report feeling more relaxed and focused than those seeing the same works in a traditional gallery. Thompson has seen this in action, too. “People become less stressed (有压力的),” she says. “Their body language is a bit tight when they first come in, and they are unwilling to talk to others. After 10 to 15 minutes, they change physically. Their bodies are looser, softer, and they’re talking to others.”   The result suggests that the act of slowing down and taking time to notice allows you to see the beauty and interesting aspects of something you might have written off (忽略). Otherwise, in this digital world, if you don’t fully engage (沉浸) with the moment, you will never give yourself the chance to enjoy it.   Even in an art gallery or museum without a mindfulness program, you can still enjoy the benefits (益处): find a quiet space, sit with just one picture and spend 10 to 15 minutes there. Breathe slowly and look at the details of the art, like shapes, colors, and what interests you. In the end, you’ll see how it changes your experience. 44.Why does Manchester Art Gallery create a single-minded space? A.To show valuable artworks. B.To get back our lost attention. C.To sell meditation recordings. D.To catch our immediate notice. 45.According to the passage, who is probably practicing mindfulness? A.An uneasy boy looking around. B.A stressed girl talking to herself. C.A focused man viewing a painting. D.A relaxed woman taking pictures. 46.What can we learn from the passage? A.Slowing down to fully engage helps visitors enjoy unnoticed beauty. B.It’s impossible to enjoy mindfulness benefits in traditional galleries. C.Mindful art viewing brings about few changes in visitors. D.Visitors joining in the movement should be great artists. 47.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To show the benefits of mindful art viewing in galleries. B.To introduce ways to improve mental health in galleries. C.To explain why mindful art viewing can improve mental health. D.To encourage people to improve mental health by mindful art viewing. Sand sculptures can be small or very large. Some sculptures can be as tall as a building! However, they don’t last long. Rain and wind can destroy them easily. B When you, as a child, first picked up a crayon, a line might have been the first mark you made. You use lines to write numbers, symbols, and the letters of the alphabet.
