My first year of high school is over and I have an enormous amount of free time. Over the school year, I have complained of being too busy. Now that I have that time, I don’t know how to use it. I miss going to school, doing group assignments and laughing with my friends. School filled me with purpose and a sense of achievement. I find that I, as well as my friends, feel sad about school coming to an end. I went on a journey to find out how to free myself from “Summer Blues”.
To get to the root of “Summer Blues,” I tried to visualize it through my inner eye, by painting it. I added different shades of blue and stormy clouds to express my thoughts through creativity. Art always helps me sort out my emotions and understand them. Plus, art is fun, and I can do it with any materials I have!
After finishing my first painting, my brain was awake, and my imagination was ticking. I knew that artists couldn’t just stay in their room, though. To discover a paintbrush’s potential, you need to take it out of its box. I then stepped into my yard. I noticed little things I had previously overlooked — the vines climbing up to reach for sunlight and the clouds shaped like bunnies and hippos. I initially didn’t notice the ant hill which I unfortunately stepped on. My sister and I burst out laughing and did a funny little dance to get the ants off our shoes. Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.
Now that I have taken action to care for myself, it is time to care for others as well. I started with something simple by donating clothes, books, and food. I also researched a cause I am passionate about — protecting the environment — and found ways to contribute. I found that using my time productively while doing good for others is another step in overcoming “Summer Blues”.
I went from feeling down to finding a new purpose in life; a purpose to find happiness for myself. I didn’t have to create happiness; I had to find it.
24.What does “Summer Blues” most probably refer to in the passage?
A.The anxiety about summer studies. B.The fear of spending summer alone.
C.The feeling of emptiness during summer. D.The dislike of outdoor summer activities.
25.The author believes that “artists couldn’t stay in their room” because ________.
A.painting outside brings people closer B.staying indoors is bad for their health
C.going outside opens up new possibilities D.painting indoors cannot express emotions
26.Which of the following would best describe the author’s personality?
A.Proactive and reflective. B.Sensitive and serious. C.Adventurous and sociable. D.Determined and ambitious.
27.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Nature is the only cure for sadness.
B.Happiness depends on school success.
C.Free time results in negative feelings.
D.Happiness comes from taking meaningful action.

根据第一段中“Now that I have that time, I don’t know how to use it. I miss going to school, doing group assignments and laughing with my friends. School filled me with purpose and a sense of achievement. I find that I, as well as my friends, feel sad about school coming to an end. I went on a journey to find out how to free myself from “Summer Blues”.(现在有了这些时间,却不知该如何利用。我怀念上学的日子、小组作业,以及和朋友们一起欢笑的时光。学校曾让我充满目标感和成就感。如今,我和朋友们都感到难过,因为学校即将结束。于是,我踏上了一段旅程,试图摆脱“夏日忧郁”)”可知,“夏日忧郁”指的就是暑假空闲时期的空虚感受。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“To discover a paintbrush’s potential, you need to take it out of its box. Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.(要发掘画笔的潜力,你需要把它拿出盒子。
根据文章第一段中“I went on a journey to find out how to free myself from “Summer Blues”.(于是,我踏上了一段旅程,试图摆脱“夏日忧郁”)”,第二段中“To get to the root of “Summer Blues,” I tried to visualize it through my inner eye, by painting it. I added different shades of blue and stormy clouds to express my thoughts through creativity. Art always helps me sort out my emotions and understand them.(为了找到“夏日忧郁”的根源,我尝试通过内心的眼睛来描绘它,用绘画表达。我加入了各种深浅不一的蓝色和乌云,以创意的方式表达自己的思绪。艺术总能帮助我梳理情绪,理解它们)”,再结合第四段中“Now that I have taken action to care for myself, it is time to care for others as well. I started with something simple by donating clothes, books, and food. I also researched a cause I am passionate about — protecting the environment — and found ways to contribute.(现在我已经开始主动关心自己,接下来也该关心他人了。我从一些简单的事情做起,比如捐赠衣物、书籍和食物。我还研究了一个我非常热衷的公益事业——保护环境,并找到了为它贡献的方式)”提到作者后续主动走进自然、投身公益的行动,可推知作者是积极主动且善于反思的。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.(与自然的连接让我暂时平静下来,也停止了焦虑)”、第四段中“I found that using my time productively while doing good for others is another step in overcoming “Summer Blues”.(我发现,高效利用我的时间,同时做对他人有益的事,也是克服“夏日忧郁”的另一步)”和最后一段“I went from feeling down to finding a new purpose in life; a purpose to find happiness for myself. I didn’t have to create happiness; I had to find it.(我从感到低落,转变为找到了人生的新目标——为自己寻找幸福。我不必创造幸福,而是要去发现它)”可知,快乐来自于有意义的行动。
C
Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists survive them by four years, living to 76, on average. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy revelation concerning this discrepancy (差异): “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the inner motivation, and thus the delights that people obtain from their activities. The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
28.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists.
B.Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists.
C.Bronze medalists’ smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D.Both medalists’ emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium.
29.What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The failure to maintain upward social comparison.
D.The effect of different types of social comparison.
30.What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A.Learn from the top performers.
B.Commit to our consistent personal growth.
C.Try to be the best in every field.
D.Strengthen our achievement motivation.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Social Comparison: A Double-Edged Sword for Athletes
B.Social Comparison: The Root of Misery in Human Competition
C.Coming in Third: The Unexpected Secret to Longevity
D.Coming in Third: The Advantages of Being “Good Enough”

根据第二段中“Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. (通过使用在赛事结束后即刻以及在颁奖台上拍摄的慢动作视频,研究人员发现,铜牌获得者在平均意义上看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。)”可知,1995年的研究表明,铜牌获得者看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison. (换句话说,银牌获得者会认为自己是第一失败者,因为他们总是将自己与最高领奖台上的选手进行比较,而忽略了其他所有未能登上领奖台的选手;然而,铜牌获得者则会将自己与所有从未登上过领奖台的选手进行积极的比较。这一理论揭示了向上型和向下型社会比较之间的差异。)”可知,奖牌获得者寿命差异的原因在于不同类型的社会比较带来的心理影响。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. (这里起作用的理念是:努力提升自己的过往表现,而你唯一需要与之进行比较的对象就是你自己。)”可知,作者建议我们致力于持续的个人成长,即与自己比较、不断进步,从而获得成功。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze. (幸运的是,有一个解决这一复杂问题的策略:不要总是追求金牌,而应努力争取铜牌。)”可知,文章主要指出不必总追求“金牌”,争取“铜牌”,即“足够好”,反而可能带来幸福与长寿,并通过研究数据和社会比较理论论证。因此,D项“位列第三:做到‘足够好’所带来的好处”准确呼应主题,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。
D
The value of embracing adversity (逆境) is almost always discovered after the fact. This is because it is also a truth that learning in the face of challenge, disappointment and frustration is as important as understanding what it takes to be successful. Learning these lessons well and surviving the tests that the lessons lie in lead to even greater moments of confidence and accomplishment.
Young athletes that are comfortable overcoming adversities are the ones that find the greatest growth, and ultimately the greatest success. Famous strength coach Vern Gambetta and others summarized this concept in the thought that, to be great, you must “be comfortable being uncomfortable”. To put it bluntly (直言地) the best athletes welcome challenge and adversity as a requirement for growth and achievement. The best coaches create environments that challenge limits and take athletes to places they wouldn’t go to on their own, and even create adversity from time to time for this reason.
To sum up, one very basic but exceptionally powerful conclusion can be reached: Young athletes, when facing moments of frustration and challenge in their personal sporting development, must be encouraged to solve problems themselves, work harder to overcome disappointments, and take ownership and control of their own destinies.
In today’s society, unfortunately, eliminating any sign of potential adversity for young athletes is universal (普遍的). Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults) frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels. The unfortunate product of these good intentions is only realized when the athletes finally come to a challenge that they must meet alone and then find themselves completely unprepared to deal with it and have a tough time reviving if they fail to overcome the challenge.
Psychologist Max Trenerry notes that the concept of willingness to accept adversity or failure is important whether for learning new skills in sports or dealing with anxiety-causing thoughts in therapy. He adds that, while every parent may ‘rescue’ their children from time to time, doing so frequently creates bigger long-term complications and prevents growth of personal perseverance.
32.Which statement will Vern Gambetta probably agree with?
A.Great athletes are good at avoiding adversity.
B.Good learners tend to have ambitious goals.
C.Athletes leading a relaxed life can be more successful.
D.Coaches should bring more challenges to athletes.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “eliminating” in paragraph 4?
A.Facilitating. B.Creating. C.Removing. D.Welcoming.
34.What can we infer about the practice of removing adversity for young athletes?
A.It helps athletes build confidence quickly.
B.It may cause long-term problems for athletes.
C.It is supported by most psychologists.
D.It prepares athletes well for future challenges.
35.What does Max Trenerry think of parents “rescuing” their children frequently?
A.It is harmful to the development of children’s perseverance.
B.It is the best way to protect children from failure.
C.It helps children learn new skills more easily.
D.It reduces children’s anxiety about challenges.

根据第四段划线单词后文“Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults) frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels.( 善意的个人(父母、教练和许多其他相关的成年人)经常试图消除他们的年轻运动员在旅途中的每一个障碍和挑战。)”
根据第四段中“The unfortunate product of these good intentions is only realized when the athletes finally come to a challenge that they must meet alone and then find themselves completely unprepared to deal with it and have a tough time reviving if they fail to overcome the challenge.( 这些良好意愿的不幸结果只有在运动员最终面临挑战时才会意识到,他们必须独自面对挑战,然后发现自己完全没有准备好应对它,如果他们不能克服挑战,他们将很难恢复。)”
根据最后一段“Psychologist Max Trenerry notes that the concept of willingness to accept adversity or failure is important whether for learning new skills in sports or dealing with anxiety-causing thoughts in therapy. He adds that, while every parent may ‘rescue’ their children from time to time, doing so frequently creates bigger long-term complications and prevents growth of personal perseverance.( 心理学家Max Trenerry指出,愿意接受逆境或失败的概念是很重要的,无论是在学习体育运动中的新技能还是在治疗中处理引起焦虑的想法。他还说,虽然每个父母都会时不时地“拯救”自己的孩子,但这样做往往会造成更大的长期问题,并阻碍个人毅力的培养。)”可推知,Max Trenerry 明确表示,频繁“拯救”孩子会造成更严重的长期问题,阻碍孩子毅力的培养。故选A项。

There can be something confusing about feeling burned out when doing beloved activities. If you’re doing what comes naturally and relying on your personal strengths, then why do you sometimes feel exhausted after? 36 The strengths are a personal resource, and resources by definition can run low.
There are early warning signs of strength overuse. Sometimes, your strengths don’t send clear signals that you’ re reaching your limits. 37 Signs of overuse include losing interest in beloved activities, feeling unfulfilled by achievements and being unable to relax. These aren’t necessarily signs of burnout yet. 38
Recovery habits support your strengths instead of draining (榨干) them. Research has identified three types of activities helping restore your resources. To begin with, social connection and spending time with people you enjoy can be incredibly restorative, for example, a good conversation with a close friend. 39 They have no deadline or expectations attached, such as reading for pleasure, catching up on your favorite TV shows, or doing crossword puzzles. Lastly, set boundaries around your work notifications after business hours.
40 Most people apply their strengths reactively to the tasks they face. But a more sustainable approach means learning to play to your strengths rather than simply responding to whatever the day brings.
A.They can be gradual, building up slowly.
B.Personal strengths should be applied actively.
C.Actually, it matters to know what personal strengths are.
D.The fact is that people often fail to use strengths sustainably.
E.Using personal strengths properly can bring meaningful benefits.
F.But all serve as early reminders that recovery time is long overdue.
G.Moreover, low-effort activities may give your brain permission to relax.

36.前文“There can be something confusing about feeling burned out when doing beloved activities. If you’ re doing what comes naturally and relying on your personal strengths, then why do you sometimes feel exhausted after?(做自己热爱的事却感到身心耗竭,这一点让人费解。如果你做的事得心应手、能发挥自身优势,为何事后有时仍疲惫不堪?)”提出发挥优势依旧疲惫的疑问,后文“The strengths are a personal resource, and resources by definition can run low.(优势属于个人资源,而资源本质上会被消耗殆尽。)”给出原理解释,D项“The fact is that people often fail to use strengths sustainably.(事实是人们往往无法可持续地使用自身优势。)”
37.前文“Sometimes, your strengths don’t send clear signals that you’ re reaching your limits.(有时你的优势不会发出清晰信号提醒你已经抵达自身极限。)”说明透支的警示信号不明显,后文“Signs of overuse include losing interest in beloved activities, feeling unfulfilled by achievements and being unable to relax.(过度使用优势的表现有:对热爱的事物失去兴趣、取得成就却没有满足感、无法放松。)”列举各类透支表现,A项“They can be gradual, building up slowly.(这些信号是逐步、缓慢累积显现的。)”
38.前文“These aren’t necessarily signs of burnout yet.(这些症状不一定代表已经心力耗竭。)”表明症状不等于彻底透支,后文开始介绍恢复精力的方法,F项“But all serve as early reminders that recovery time is long overdue.(但这些都是早期提醒,说明你早就该停下休息恢复精力了。)”
39.前文“To begin with, social connection and spending time with people you enjoy can be incredibly restorative, for example, a good conversation with a close friend.(首先,社交陪伴、和喜欢的人相处能极大恢复精力,例如和好友畅快谈心。)”介绍第一种恢复方式,后文“They have no deadline or expectations attached, such as reading for pleasure, catching up on your favorite TV shows, or doing crossword puzzles.(这类活动没有截止日期、不带任何期待,比如休闲阅读、追喜欢的电视剧、玩填字游戏。)”介绍无压力休闲活动,G项“Moreover, low-effort activities may give your brain permission to relax.(此外,低消耗活动能让大脑放松下来。)”
40.后文“Most people apply their strengths reactively to the tasks they face. But a more sustainable approach means learning to play to your strengths rather than simply responding to whatever the day brings.(大多数人被动使用优势应对眼前任务,而更可持续的方式是主动发挥自身优势,而非被动应付每日琐事。)”

walk away 意为 “离开”;stand back 意为 “退后”;come along 意为 “一起来;出现”。
release…into the wild 意为 “把……
costume 意为 “戏服;特殊服装”,且与后文 “get rid of the costumes” 直接呼应。
后文 “to help create…” aim 意为 “目标”,构成 “one’s aim is to do sth.”,意为 “某人的目标是做某事”。
interaction with…

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Li Ming, a freshman in senior high school, sat alone in the empty classroom, staring at the test paper on his desk. The red marks on it seemed to be laughing at him. 52 out of 150. It was his third math test in a month, and his third failure.
He thought about his middle school days, when he used to be one of the top students in his class. His teachers always praised him, and his parents often showed off his grades to their friends. But now, everything had changed.
Li Ming put his head down on the desk and closed his eyes. He remembered how excited he had been on the first day of high school. He had promised his mother that he would study hard and get into a good university. But now, that promise felt like a joke. Maybe he was just not smart enough for high school. Maybe he should give up his dream of becoming an engineer.
Just then, the classroom door opened. It was Mr. Zhang, his math teacher. Mr. Zhang was a kind man in his fifties, with glasses and a warm smile. He walked over to Li Ming and sat down beside him.
“I saw your paper, Li Ming,” Mr. Zhang said softly. “Do you want to tell me what’s going on?”
Li Ming hesitated for a moment. Then, all his feelings came out like a flood. He told Mr. Zhang about his frustration, his fear of falling behind, and how he had lost all his confidence.
Mr. Zhang listened patiently. When Li Ming finished, Mr. Zhang said, “Let me tell you a secret. When I was your age, I failed my math test too. In fact, I failed three times in a row.”
Li Ming looked up in surprise. “Really? But you are a math teacher now!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Mr. Zhang smiled and took out an old, yellow notebook from his bag. Inside were detailed error notes and daily learning plans he had made in high school. He told Li Ming that failure never meant incompetence, but rather revealed his weaknesses. Many high school students struggled with math at first, and progress always came gradually rather than overnight. He encouraged Li Ming to face his mistakes bravely, sort out confusing knowledge points, and never doubt his own ability. Warmth spread through Li Ming’s heart, and he regained his fading confidence.
From that day on, Li Ming did something different every day after school. He no longer felt frustrated or discouraged. Instead, he sorted out incorrect math questions carefully every day, reviewed key knowledge regularly and asked the teacher for help with difficult problems in time. Bit by bit, his math foundation became solid, and his problem-solving skills improved greatly. Months later, Li Ming achieved a satisfying score in the final math test. He finally understood that true growth lies in persisting through difficulties rather than fearing temporary failure.

Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding
happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of
silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.Using slow-motion video
captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the
bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists.Over 80%of
bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles,a figure that was nearly double that observed among
silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist's smile lasted longer than the average smile
observed among the silver medalists.More recent research has looked at the life span of all three
medalist categories.A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to
72.Gold medalists survive them by four years, living to 76,on average. But first prize in longevity
went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy revelation concerning this discrepancy ()"Unsatisfactory
competition outcomes may adversely affect health."In other words, silver medalists see themselves
as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold
medalists;nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who
never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and
downward social comparison.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the
inner motivation, and thus the delights that people obtain from their activities. The concept at work
here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to
compare yourselfis you.
28.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists.
B.Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists.
C.Bronze medalists'smile lasted longer than every silver medalist's.
D.Both medalists'emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium.
29.What is the cause of the difference in medalists'life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The failure to maintain upward social comparison
D.The effect of different types of social comparison.

The value of embracing adversity (is almost always discovered after the fact. This is
because it is also a truth that learning in the face of challenge, disappointment and frustration is as
important as understanding what it takes to be successful.Learning these lessons well and surviving
the tests that the lessons lie in lead to even greater moments of confidence and accomplishment.
Young athletes that are comfortable overcoming adversities are the ones that find the greatest
growth, and ultimately the greatest success.Famous strength coach Vem Gambetta and others
summarized this concept in the thought that,to be great, you must "be comfortable being
uncomfortable".To put it bluntly (the best athletes welcome challenge and adversity as a
requirement for growth and achievement. The best coaches create environments that challenge
limits and take athletes to places they wouldn't go to on their own,and even create adversity from
time to time for this reason.
To sum up,one very basic but exceptionally powerful conclusion can be reached:Young
athletes, when facing moments of frustration and challenge in their personal sporting development,
must be encouraged to solve problems themselves, work harder to overcome disappointments, and
take ownership and control of their own destinies.
In today's society, unfortunately, eliminating any sign of potential adversity for young athletes
is universal )Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults)
frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels. The
unfortunate product of these good intentions is only realized when the athletes finally come to a

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
