We only need to hear a few notes of a tune, and we remember where we were when we first heard it, what we were doing and who we were with. For most people the songs that remain most meaningful are those from their teens and 20s. The continued impact of these songs is due to something called the “reminiscence bump” — a tendency for people to have more vivid memories from their youth and early adulthood. During this time our brains are still developing, and we have less control over our emotions, which makes our experiences more vivid and the music we hear more intense. That’s why, for most people, the emotional connection to music peaks during adolescence and early adulthood. In fact, a new study from Finland suggests that this peak is actually around the age of 17. Previous studies have looked at the “reminiscence bump” in Western populations, but the Finnish research team wanted to look at how it affects people globally, and if it affects men and women differently. They studied 1,891 people from 84 countries. The participants were first asked to share their age and to name a piece of music that was important or meaningful to them. The researchers then compared the participants’ ages with the release dates of the music they named. The average peak age for personally meaningful music was 17, although there was some difference between men and women. And, for men, the peak age was around 16, while for women it was 19. One possible explanation for this is that men tend to form their music-related memories earlier, during the resistant stage of adolescence, perhaps choosing songs that celebrate independence. Women, on the other hand, may prefer music that relates to important social and emotional connections, which take longer to develop. 1.What can be learned about “reminiscence bump” from paragraph 2? A.It transports us to childhood. B.It generates vivid memories. C.It intensifies youthful experiences. D.It helps recollect adolescent events. 2.What does the Finnish research team focus on? A.Challenging existing theories and collecting new data. B.Identifying the peak age and comparing music preference. C.Expanding the research scope and observing gender difference. D.Confirming previous findings and analyzing emotional intensity. 3.What can we infer about the study from paragraph 4? A.It adopted a quantitative research method. B.It targeted participants of different age groups. C.It focused on the evolution of music release time. D.It yielded findings beyond researchers’ expectations. 4.Why do men and women have different peak ages? A.They mature at varying ages. B.They favor distinct music themes. C.They have diverse musical talents. D.They value separate social behaviors. B While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural (人工神经的) networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice. When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future! But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The father of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer-generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz, developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it. AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it? Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer, and I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: can we reproduce creativity using a computer? Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected. 5.What plays an important role in producing PROTO? A.Holly’s special voice. B.Holly’s rich knowledge. C.The input of existing music. D.The use of an instrument. 6.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.The recent famous music artists. B.The increasing diversity of AI music. C.The development of computer science. D.The history of computer-generated music. 7.Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa? A.To show the popularity of smart robots. B.To promote deep thinking on AI musicians. C.To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists. D.To make comparisons between human and robotic artists. 8.What is the author’s attitude towards music co-created by AI and humans? A.Confident. B.Surprised. C.Confused. D.Doubtful. 二、七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) Music is present in any part of the world, and it is appreciated and felt everywhere. 根据第二段中“reminiscence bump”后面的“a tendency for people to have more vivid memories from their youth and early adulthood(人们对自己青年和成年早期的记忆更为生动的一种倾向)”可知,“记忆隆起”的核心特征是使人更容易回想起青少年时期发生的相关事件。 2. 根据第三段中的“Previous studies have looked at the “reminiscence bump” in Western populations, but the Finnish research team wanted to look at how it affects people globally, and if it affects men and women differently.(此前的研究针对西方人群研究了“记忆隆起”现象,但芬兰研究团队想要探究它对全球人群的影响,以及它对男性和女性的影响是否存在差异)”可知,该团队的研究重点是将研究范围从西方拓展至全球,同时观察该现象的性别差异。 3. 根据第四段中的“They studied 1,891 people from 84 countries. The participants were first asked to share their age and to name a piece of music that was important or meaningful to them. The researchers then compared the participants’ ages with the release dates of the music they named.(他们研究了来自84个国家的1891名受试者。研究人员首先要求受试者告知自己的年龄,并说出一段对自己而言重要或有特殊意义的音乐。随后,研究人员将受试者的年龄与他们所提及音乐的发行日期进行了对比。)”可知,该研究选取大量受试者,采集数据并进行比对,采用的是定量研究的方式。 4.细节理解题。根据第五段“One possible explanation for this is that men tend to form their music-related memories earlier, during the resistant stage of adolescence, perhaps choosing songs that celebrate independence. Women, on the other hand, may prefer music that relates to important social and emotional connections, which take longer to develop.(对此一种可能的解释是,男性往往更早形成与音乐相关的记忆,这一阶段处于青春期的叛逆期,他们或许会选择歌颂独立的歌曲。而女性则可能更喜欢与重要的社交和情感联结相关的音乐,这类情感联结需要更长时间才会建立。)”可知,男女偏好的音乐主题存在明显差异,这是二者峰值年龄不同的原因。 B While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. C.Confused. D.Doubtful. 根据第二段中的“When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI).(在制作专辑PROTO时,霍莉训练数据集创作新音乐。这个过程需要录入由人类或人工智能创作的音乐数据。)”可知,录入已有音乐数据在制作这张专辑中起到重要作用。 6.主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The father of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer-generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz, developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.(但霍莉·赫恩登并不是唯一探索人工智能作曲的人。上个世纪,机器在音乐领域发挥的作用越来越大。计算机科学之父艾伦·图灵在1951年创作出第一首计算机生成音乐。随后在1980年,加州大学圣克鲁兹分校的戴维·科普开发出EMI——音乐智能实验系统,该系统能够分析现有音乐并以此创作新曲目。)”可知,本段按照时间顺序介绍计算机生成音乐的发展历史。 7.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer, and I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: can we reproduce creativity using a computer?(米克拉·索萨是一名计算机生成艺人,在照片墙拥有超百万粉丝。米克拉称:“我是模特兼歌手,同时我是机器人。”这就引出一个问题:我们能用计算机复刻创造力吗?)”可知,作者举这个例子,旨在引发人们对人工智能艺人相关问题的深入思考。 8.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.(尽管这些问题并不容易回答,但我相信音乐的下一个前沿领域介于两者之间。我能看到前进的道路,迎来创造力的新曙光,将人类创造能力与人工智能相结合。并且随着音乐和人工智能联系变得更加紧密,音乐的下一个篇章必将变得精彩。)”可知,作者对人类与人工智能协同创作音乐抱有信心。 二、七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) Music is present in any part of the world, and it is appreciated and felt everywhere.
