The wild geese landed by a quiet lake to rest for the night. Nils, cold and lonely, couldn’t fall asleep. Suddenly, he noticed something moving in the dark — a red fox was creeping toward the sleeping geese. The fox, Smir, was looking for his dinner. His eyes were fixed on Akka, the old leader of the geese.
The geese woke up and flew into the air, but Akka was slower than the others. Smir caught her in his mouth! Nils’s heart beat fast with fear, but he knew he had to do something.
He ran toward the fox, shouting loudly,“Let her go, you thief!” Smir just laughed at the small boy and kept running. Then Nils had a clever idea. He jumped and grabbed (抓住) Smir’s long tail, holding on with all his strength.
“Let go of me, you little creature!” Smir shouted angrily. He turned his head, trying to bite Nils. But Nils swung (摆动) himself to the side, pulling the fox’s tail so hard that Smir had to open his mouth. Akka fell to the ground!
Quickly, Akka flew up to a tree. She was safe! Smir was very angry and tried to catch Nils instead. But Akka called to the other geese for help. Soon, many geese flew down and they pecked (啄) at the fox’s head and back until Smir ran away.
Akka flew to Nils. “You saved my life,” she said thankfully. “You’re one of us now.”
“You have changed,” she added. “The boy who made fun of animals would not help us. What made you different?”
Nils thought for a moment. “When I was big, I never thought about others’ feelings. Now that I’m small, I understand how it feels to need help.”
From then on, all the geese trusted Nils. That night, as Nils fell asleep surrounded by his new friends, he felt truly happy for the first time since he became small. He finally found true friends who cared about him.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Heidi
By Johanna Spyri
The novel explores themes (主题) of nature, friendship and kindness. Heidi is a little Swiss girl, whose honesty influences those around her. She goes to live with her grandfather in the Alps. She quickly learns to love her new life with him. But then Heidi must be sent away again to Frankfurt, to be the friend of Clara, a girl who is sick and cannot walk...
Chapter Five
Her first day in Frankfurt was a strange day for Heidi, but even stranger for Ms. Rottenmeier, the housekeeper.
At first Heidi couldn’t think where she was. When she woke up, jumped from the big white bed and ran to the window, she saw neither the snow on high mountains nor the little stream winding below. All she saw was brick walls and houses. There was no sound of the wind in the trees-only the sound of carriages (马车) rattling over the stone streets outside.
Heidi felt as though she had been locked up in a cage. But Ms. Rottenmeier felt that she was locked up with a strange, wild child. The child knew nothing of how to behave in a well-run house. She was late to meals. Her clothes were not correct. She made friends with the servants.
But Clara had become much more cheerful since Heidi’s arrival. She liked talking to Heidi about life in the mountains and about Heidi’s grandfather. For Clara the next few days were much less dull than usual.
Heidi was less happy. Tomorrow, she kept thinking, I really must go home. But one thing pleased her. Every day she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.Granny’s teeth were no longer able to chew the hard, black bread which was all she had, and Heidi planned to take back to her the lovely soft rolls as a present.
At last, one day, she started for home. But at the door she met Ms. Rottenmeier.“Where are you going? I have strictly forbidden (禁止) you to go outside by yourself!” Ms.Rottenmeier said.
“I’m only going home,” said Heidi. “I’ve been away too long. My goats must be missing me and...”
“My goodness!” exclaimed Ms. Rottenmeier. “The child is mad!” And then she ordered the servant to lock Heidi up her room.

5.How did Ms. Rottenmeier feel when she met Heidi at the door?

由第一段“a red fox was creeping toward the sleeping geese. The fox, Smir, was looking for his dinner.”

through the eyes of sb.“通过某人的视角”,固定短语,by“通过”后接方式/工具,on“在……
live a+adj.+life“过着……

根据“She goes to live with her grandfather in the Alps. She quickly learns to love her new life with him. But then Heidi must be sent away again to Frankfurt, to be the friend of Clara, a girl who is sick and cannot walk...” In the city.
2.根据“But Ms. Rottenmeier felt that she was locked up with a strange, wild child. The child knew nothing of how to behave in a well-run house.” Because she knew nothing of how to behave in a well-run house.
3.根据“But Clara had become much more cheerful since Heidi’s arrival. She liked talking to Heidi about life in the mountains and about Heidi’s grandfather.”Heidi和Clara聊了聊山里的生活和她的祖父使她开心。 She talked to Clara about life in the mountains and about her grandfather.
4.根据“But one thing pleased her. Every day she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.” She saved some rolls for Granny as a present.
5.根据“But at the door she met Ms. Rottenmeier. ‘Where are you going? I have strictly forbidden (禁止) you to go outside by yourself!’Ms.Rottenmeier said…‘My goodness!’ exclaimed Ms. Rottenmeier. ‘The child is mad!’ And then she ordered the servant to lock Heidi up her room.”
6.根据“The novel explores themes (主题) of nature, friendship and kindness.” Tomorrow, she kept thinking, I really must go home. But one thing pleased her. Every day she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.” The chapter explores the theme of kindness. From the story,I learn that Heidi was kind to think of Granny and took rolls for her.
