B When I was a boy growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s, it was common to see hitchhikers walking along the side of the road as you drove along. A lot of people back then couldn’t afford cars so they either walked or hitched a ride when they had to go into town. As I got older, though, I noticed them less and less. That is until recently. It seems the difficulties of life these days are leaving a lot more people with only their legs for transportation. Well, the other day I was driving home after picking up a few things from the store. I was in a sour state of mind. I had been watching too much news and listening to too little music. I had been worrying too much and not reflecting enough. I was starting to wonder if there was anything I could do to make a difference in this crazy world, if anything I did even mattered. It was then that I saw her, a middle-aged woman loaded down with shopping bags on the side of the road, hoping to hitch a ride. I pulled over to the side of the road and let her in. She was traveling a bit out of my way but I decided to give her a ride all the way home. She told me how hard things had been for her lately and that she’d had to sell her car. Then when I pulled into her driveway, she smiled and thanked me for the ride. I drove away smiling too and as I did I heard a soft, gentle voice speaking into the depths of my heart. “Everything you do in this life makes a difference. You matter!” I thanked the warmth of life for giving me a chance to do an act of kindness. And I thanked this joy for sweetening my sour state of mind and for returning joy to my soul again. 24. Why did people often hitchhike in the 1970’s and 1980’s? A. They enjoyed talking with drivers. B. They couldn’t afford their own cars. C. They wanted to save time on the way. D. They had no easy access to public transport. 25. What caused the author to be in a sour state of mind? A. Failing to help others in need before. B. Being stuck in traffic on the way home. C. Being tired from carrying shopping bags. D. Watching too much news and worrying a lot. 26. What can we infer about the author after helping the woman? A. He felt more confused about life. B. He realized the value of his action. C. He decided to stop watching news. D. He planned to help more people every day. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. An Unexpected Hitchhike B. The Warm Voice in the Heart C. A Difficult Day for a Woman D. A Hitchhike That Brightens the Heart C Planting trees has plenty of benefits, but this popular carbon-removal method alone can’t possibly balance out the planet-warming emissions caused by the world’s largest fossil fuel companies. To do that, trees would have to cover the entire land mass of North and Central America, according to a study published this June. After looking at the numbers, researchers found that the trees’ collective ability to remove carbon through photosynthesis can’t stand up to the potential emissions from the fossil fuel reserves of the 200 largest oil, gas and coal fuel companies — there’s not enough available land on Earth to do that. And even if there were, if those 200 companies had to pay for planting all those trees, it would cost 10.8 trillion, more than their entire combined market value of 7.01 trillion. The general public maybe understands offsetting to be a sort of magic eraser, and that’s just not where we’re at,” said Nina Friggens, a research fellow at the University of Exeter who co-authored the study. Carbon offsetting essentially means investing in tree planting or other environmental projects to attempt to make up for carbon emissions. Trees are one of the cheapest ways to do this because they naturally take in planet-warming carbon. Fossil fuel corporations, along with other companies, have promoted tree-planting as a key part of carbon offset programs in recent years. To do their calculations, the researchers looked at the 200 largest fossil fuel reserves — the fuel that companies promise shareholders they can get in the future — and calculated how much carbon dioxide would be released if this fuel is burned. Leading environmental scientist Jonathan Foley, who was not involved in the study, explained the results another way. “Trees are the sponges and mops we use to clean up the mess,” he said. “But if the taps are still running and the water’s pouring out over the edges of your bathtub, destroying your bathroom and your home, maybe you’ve got to learn to turn off the taps too.” 28. What does the study say about planting trees alone? A. It can fully balance fossil fuel emissions. B. It costs less than $7.01 trillion for 200 companies. C. It is more effective than other carbon-removal methods. D. It needs land as large as both North and Central America. 29. Why do fossil fuel companies promote tree-planting? A. It is a key part of their profit plans. B. It helps them reduce tax payments. C. They are eager to participate in programs. D. It is the cheapest way to make up for carbon emissions. 30. What does Jonathan Foley imply by mentioning “turn off the taps”? A. Fossil fuel emissions need to be reduced. B. We should stop using fossil fuels. C. More trees should be planted. D. Bathrooms should be protected from water damage. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The benefits of tree-planting for the environment. B. A study on the limits of tree-planting in carbon offsetting. C. Different opinions on environmental protection methods. D. How fossil fuel companies reduce their carbon emissions. D OpenAI has released GPT-5, more than two years after the 2023 release of GPT-4, closing a period of intense commercial investment and worry over AI’s capabilities. Expectations are high for the newest version of OpenAI’s chatbot because the San Francisco company has long positioned its technical advancements as a path toward artificial general intelligence, or AGI, a technology that is supposed to transcend humans at economically valuable work with higher efficiency and accuracy than human professionals. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the new model as a “significant step along our path to AGI” but mostly focused on its usability to the 700 million people he says that use ChatGPT each week. “It’s like talking to an expert — an actual PhD-level expert in anything, any area you need, on demand,” Altman said at a launch event on August 7. Ahead of time, rival Anthropic released the latest version of its own chatbot, Claude, earlier in the week. Meanwhile, longtime OpenAI partner Microsoft said it will incorporate GPT-5 into its own AI assistant, Copilot. GPT-5 is now available, with usage limits, to anyone with a free ChatGPT account. The launch event focused heavily on ChatGPT’s use in coding, an area where Anthropic is seen as a leader, and featured a guest appearance by the CEO of coding software maker Cursor, an important Anthropic customer. OpenAI’s presenters also spent time talking about safety improvements to make the chatbot “lies less” and not give harmful answers even when people try tricky questions. At a technical level, GPT-5 shows “modest but significant improvements” on the latest benchmarks, but when compared to GPT-4, it also looks very different and could set the stage for future innovations, said John Thickstun, an assistant professor of computer science at Cornell University. OpenAI started in 2015 as a nonprofit research laboratory to safely build AGI and has since incorporated a for-profit company with an estimated worth that has grown to $300 billion. This makes it one of the world’s most valuable private companies, although it has not yet reported making a profit. 32. Why are hopes for GPT-5 high? A. It will bring large profits. B. It is OpenAI’s last developed AI chatbot. C. It has seen large commercial investment. D. It has long been viewed by OpenAI as a path to AGI. 33. What does the word “transcend” in paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Go beyond. B. Tie with. C. Rely on. D. Turn into. 34. What did OpenAI mainly highlight about GPT-5 at the launch event? A. Its value as a coding assistant. B. Its partnership with Microsoft. C. Its lower price for students. D. Its free access for all users. 35. What is John Thickstun’s attitude toward GPT-5? A. Critical. B. Uncertain. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It can be hard to stay motivated when learning a language. It’s easy to lose interest if you’re always thinking, “How often do I need to study?” or “How long is it going to take to become fluent?” 36 It is often more important than how hard you study! ● 37 Instead of thinking about far-away goals, use the language to do things that you enjoy right now! For example, if you like learning about other cultures, watch TV shows or read in the language. 38 ●Have a conversation every day To get the best results, you need to study grammar and vocabulary, but you also need to practice speaking and listening. Try to have a conversation in the language every day, even for a few minutes. Spend time discussing your favorite topics, like your favorite hobbies or places to visit. 39 Over time, conversation will become easier. As you see how much you’ve improved, you’ll want to speak even more! ●Set easy daily goals Lastly, set daily learning goals. 40 Instead, make small goals for yourself, like “listen to an audiobook in English for 30 minutes every day.” By dividing your bigger goals into daily tasks, learning becomes easier — and more fun! A. Enjoy the things you do. B. Use the language to do things you enjoy. C. Here are some ways to keep you motivated. D. Don’t worry about mistakes; just try to have fun. E. In fact, the way you think about studying matters a lot. F. Big goals, like “become fluent in English”, aren’t very motivating. G. It seemed too hard, and pushing outside my comfort zone was not something I was raised to do. In fact. I wouldn’t have become a runner if it weren’t for my husband, Charles. He had been serious competitive runner for many years. After our marriage, he wouldn’t stop talking about how much he missed it. “So start running again, why don’t you?” I was getting tired of hearing about it. So he picked it up again, and after about a year, I started to join him at the track. Just a few weeks later, Charles signed us both up for a five-kilometer race. I hesitated about doing it. It was too soon. But on the race day, there I was. The gun went off. Thousands of runners pushed forward. The first kilometer was tough. “I don’t think I’m gonna make it.” I was already breathing heavily and painfully aware of the group of runners pounding past me. “No, you’re doing great,” said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something other than my discomfort. “I can’t,” I said, barely audibly (听得见地). He tried a different way to persuade me. “Just make it to that house and let’s see how you feel.” After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing me. “Miserable” didn’t even begin to describe how I felt. And there was pain, so much pain. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “You’ll be fine. You’ve got less than a kilometer to go.” _______________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I had my arms held higher when I passed through the finish line. ________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
