A Time to Talk
—By Robert Frost

And slows his horse to a meaning walk,

Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.
Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene (场景) of his friend seeing him off. A new brain research (大脑研究) shows that choosing handwriting instead of using a keyboard can bring better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you remember what you wrote better later,” said Audrey van der Meer, who did the study.
12 young grown-ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study. Special machines were used to follow and record (记录) brain wave (电波) activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard.
The results (结果) showed that the brain in both young grown-ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build connection (联系) between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results let people know the importance of children’s drawing and writing at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but parents should encourage (鼓励) it because it’s important for children to experience the tiring step of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements are helpful in some ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand needs control of more skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write a passage, but you should take notes by hand in class.
1. Which is the correct order (顺序) of the research steps?
① Record and study the results.

A. The senses you experience when writing by hand.
B. The sound you hear when writing by hand.
C. The letters you are learning to write.
D. The parts of the brain you use to learn.

More and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities around the world now. Some climb the highest mountains and others travel to different parts of the world. I would think bungee jumping (蹦极) to be a good example of such an activity.
Bungee jumping is not a new activity. It appeared (出现) hundreds of years ago. The men tie (绑) long vines (藤) from plants around their ankles (踝关节). They spend days building tall towers out of vines and logs (原木). Then they jump off them. In their old story, a woman tried bungee jumping first. She decided to run away from her rude husband (丈夫). So she climbed up a tall tree and tied some vines around her feet. Her husband also climbed up the tree and tried to catch her. The woman jumped and the man followed. The vines saved her life, but her husband died.
However, bungee jumping becomes much safer nowadays. You jump from a high place 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (有弹性的) rope tied to your feet. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that over 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping.
Why do people take part in such activities as these nowadays? Some scientists think that it is because life in modern world has become safe and boring. In the past, people had to go out and hunt for food. They didn’t have a doctor if they were ill, and life was harder for them. Nowadays, people live and work safely. They buy food in shops. And there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. Then some people take part in such activities like bungee jumping.
It is important to remember that this sport is not suitable (合适的) for everyone. And remember, if you do not want to do it yourself, you can watch other people jump.
1. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to (指) ________?
A. vines B. towers C. logs D. ankles
2. What can we learn about bungee jumping?
A. Bungee jumping is a good sport for everyone nowadays.
B. People can jump as high as they can when they try bungee jumping.
C. The longer the elastic rope is, the safer people will be in bungee jumping.
D. People won’t hit the ground with the help of the elastic rope in bungee jumping.
3. Why do people take part in bungee jumping nowadays?
A. Because they live and work safely. B. Because they think life is exciting.
C. Because they worry about being ill. D. Because they feel bored with life.

If you want to become a fluent (流利的) English speaker, you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meanings of the unfamiliar (不熟悉的) words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for English learners. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically (自动地), and you can be sure that with a little effort, they will become perfect.
1. According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A. Reading and listening B. Reading and writing

Are you an “I” person or an “E” person? People have talked about it a lot online these days. The ideas come from a popular personality (性格) test called MBTI. They test the personality in eight ways. Each way uses a letter to show the meaning. After the test each person will get a four-letter result to show the personality. In all, there are sixteen kinds of personality in the test.
Why do people want to take the MBTI test? Here are the survey results from three people by Life Week magazine.
“People want to learn about themselves and others,” Guo Yongyu, an expert said. “When they know themselves and others better, they can learn to be with others. That helps them feel more relaxed.”
Gao Yanyi, a middle school student from Shanxi, thinks that the MBTI test can help her find friends with similar MBTI results to hers quickly. She adds, “But that should not be the only way to find friends. Sometimes it could make me lose possible good friends with different kinds of MBTI.”
Ma Ruina, from Beijing No. 4 Middle school, took the test once. He doesn’t want to use it in his life again. It made him feel like it’s limiting (限制). “Everyone is different, and it’s not right to put people into simple groups,” he says.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaking question when meeting new friends. But that’s all it is—for fun. Knowing other’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t decide who you are.
1. How many ways does the MBTI test use to show each person’s personality?
A. One. B. Four. C. Eight. D. Sixteen.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the survey results?
A. Most people are serious about the MBTI test.
B. Guo Yongyu advises people not to take the test.
C. Gao Yanyi may use it to help find similar friends.
D. Ma Ruina agrees to put people into the same groups.
3. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
4. What might be the writer’s opinion about the MBTI test according to Paragraph 6?
A. People should be serious about the result of the MBTI test.
B. The MBTI test can show everything you don’t know about yourself.
C. The MBTI test is an interesting way to learn more about your new friends.
D. Knowing someone’s MBTI result means you really know this person.
【答案】1. C 2. C 3. D 4. C

A Time to Talk
—By Robert Frost
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed (锄地),
And shout from where I am, What is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust (戳) my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.
Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene (场景) of his friend seeing him off. plays and classical pieces. Most of them were born between 1995 and 2000, making them the company’s newest power. They will show both classical and new plays in many different styles.

② Put special caps on each person.
③ Find 12 young grown-ups and 12 children.
④ Ask people to write by hand and use a keyboard.
A. ③②④① B. ②④①③
C. ③①②④ D. ②①④③
2. What is the result of the research?
A. You can remember what you wrote better when using a keyboard.
B. The brain is more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard.
C. All Children at school should draw and write by hand at an early age.
D. Learning to write by hand is a bit slower than using a keyboard.
3. What does the underlined word “These” refer to (指代) ?
A. The senses you experience when writing by hand.
B. The sound you hear when writing by hand.
C. The letters you are learning to write.
D. The parts of the brain you use to learn.
4. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. People will write their shopping lists from now on.
B. Young grown-ups should take part in more studies.
C. Schools may encourage students to write more by hand.
D. Children won’t use a keyboard to write a passage.
5. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Reading and listening B. Reading and writing
C. Listening and speaking D. Writing and speaking

C. English music D. VOA

A. everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B. you needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day
C. being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening
D. you should take notes of whatever you are hearing
5. The passage is mainly about how to________.
A. be better at English speaking and writing B. deal with new words in reading
C. read more English books D. choose reading materials
