What makes a good learner?Section A(1a-2d)谈论各科学习方式与英语学习中的困难;3a-3d 通过播客访谈探讨主动学习(active learning);Grammar Focus(4a-4d)系统学习由 that、if/whether 引导的宾语从句;Section B 1a-1e 阅读说明文 How to Become a Successful Learner,2a-2c Carry out a survey on learning。4a 列出十种学习方法(being able to focus well / believing in yourself / having deep motivation / not giving up / reviewing lessons / being well-organized / taking notes / studying with others / reflecting on learning / studying all the time),学生逐一按重要程度打 1-10 分,并补充自己认为重要的其他方法;4b 小组内比较各自的评分、计算出每种方法的平均分,并讨论分歧;4c 根据小组平均分制作条形统计图(如教材示例的横向条形图,0-10 刻度),张贴展示并向全班解释结果;最后完成 Reflecting 五问(学到了哪些学习方法? It is not just about what we need to learn, but how we learn. (I think that… We believe that… (Why does studying all the time get a low score?);3. (The average score of … is 8.5, which shows that…) According to our survey, … / We found that… / We suggest (that) you…4. 1. Students can rate ten learning methods from 1 to 10 and add their own methods with reasons (4a). 2. Students can compare ratings, work out average scores and discuss disagreements in English (4b). 3. Students can create a bar chart and explain the results to the class with sentences like According to our survey, the most important method is… (4c). 1. Students can respect different learning preferences among classmates. 2. Students can understand the unit's message: it is not just about what we need to learn, but how we learn. 1. Students can support their ratings with reasons from the text and their own experience. 2. Students can read the chart data, compare the results across groups and draw conclusions. 1. Students can cooperate in groups to collect data, calculate averages and finish the chart. 2. Students can reflect on their own learning with the five Reflecting questions. 1. Students can finish the whole survey project: rate—average—chart—present (4a-4c). 2. Students can use object clauses to express and explain opinions on learning methods during discussion and presentation. 1. Explaining the chart results with accurate language (average scores, comparisons and suggestions). 2. Using the survey results to reflect on their own learning methods. Step 1 Lead-in 1. Ask the unit question again: What makes a good learner? 2. Ask students to recall the learning methods they encountered in this unit (learning tips in 1a, active learning, the five suggestions in Section B…). 1. Brainstorm and list the methods they remember. 2. Get ready for the project: Carry out a survey on learning. Step 2 Rating (4a) 1. Present the ten methods: being able to focus well, believing in yourself, having deep motivation, not giving up, reviewing lessons, being well-organized, taking notes, studying with others, reflecting on learning, studying all the time. 2. Ask each student to rate them from 1 (least important) to 10 (most important) individually and write one reason for the highest and the lowest. 3. Ask: What other methods are important? Add them. 1. Read the ten methods and rate them alone. 2. Write reasons with object clauses: I gave "believing in yourself" 10 because I think that… / I gave "studying all the time" only 3 because… 3. Add their own methods (e.g., doing sports to keep the brain fresh). Step 3 Group work: average (4b) 1. Organize groups of four; hand out the record sheet. 2. Ask groups to compare results and work out an average score for each method. 3. Ask groups to discuss disagreements: Which method has the biggest difference? Why? 1. Report their own ratings in turn. 2. Fill in the sheet and calculate the averages. 3. Discuss with object clauses: I wonder if studying all the time is really useful… / I believe that reflecting on learning matters more than… Step 4: Making a chart (4c) 1. Show the example chart in the book (horizontal bars, scale 0-10). 2. Ask groups to create their own chart with the average scores and write the title and labels in English. 3. Remind them to prepare a two-minute explanation. 1. Draw the bar chart with the group's average scores. 2. Check the chart within the group. 3. Prepare the presentation with the frames: According to our survey… / We found that… Step 5: Presentation 1. Invite groups to display their charts and explain the results. 2. Guide the class to listen and compare: Which method gets the highest score in most groups? Are there interesting differences? 3. Give feedback on language (object clauses, data expressions). 1. Present: According to our survey, the most important method is … (average 9.2). We think that… The least useful one is studying all the time, because… 2. Listen, take notes, and ask questions. Step 6: Reflecting Lead the five Reflecting questions: 1. What learning methods have you learned about? 2. Which methods do you think are good for you? 3. Can you express your opinions on learning using object clauses? 4. Have you found ways to become a better learner? 5. Have you become more confident in learning? How so? 1. Answer the questions one by one in pairs. 2. Share with the class, e.g., I have learned that… I believe that taking notes works best for me. Step 7 Summary 1. Sum up the unit with the theme sentence: It is not just about what we need to learn, but how we learn. 2. Encourage students to turn the top-rated methods into action this week. 1. Read the theme sentence together. 2. Tell the class one method they will start using this week. Step 8 Homework Level A: Write five sentences to report your group's survey results with at least two object clauses. Level B: Write "My plan to become a better learner" (8-10 sentences): choose two methods you rated low but want to improve, and say what you will do. Level C: Ask a family member to rate the ten methods too; compare their ratings with yours and write 4-5 sentences about the differences. Unit 3 Smart Learning Project: Carry out a survey on learning Steps: Rate (1-10) → Average (group) → Chart → Present Sentence frames: According to our survey, … / We found that… / We suggest (that) you… Key question: Is studying all the time important? (No—how we learn matters!) Theme: It is not just about what we need to learn, but how we learn.
