Passage8
(25-26七年级上·重庆沙坪坝·阶段检测)On a small and lonely island in the Pacific called Malden, people find something strange: many flat, heavy stones on the ground. On them, there is a carving of a person with a bird’s head and wings, called the “birdman.” These stones are a mystery from long ago.
Western sailors first saw the stones in the 1800s. Later, a scientist named Dr. Eleanor Vance studies the island. She learns that Polynesian people once lived there in a small group with a leader. They have a special place for ceremonies, like a stone platform. Most birdman stones stand there.
What does the birdman mean? One idea connects it to stories from other Polynesian places, like Easter Island. There, they have a “Birdman” competition every year. Dr. Vance thinks the Malden stones are part of a similar idea. Also, the carvings are not all the same. This might mean different stones are for different families or events.
But another expert, Dr. Kenji Tanaka, has a different idea. He says we cannot just use the Easter Island story. The birdman on Malden Island looks different—it often stands very still, like a guard. Also, near some stones, there are other carvings of stars, waves, and boats. Dr. Tanaka thinks the birdman might be a symbol that connects different ideas. “Birds fly in the sky and travel far over the sea. People live on land,” he says. “The birdman is both. It could be a wise ancestor (祖先) who guides boats at sea. Or it could show how a leader must understand both his people and the powerful sea around them.”
Why are the stones there? They are very heavy, so the work is difficult. Dr. Vance thinks they might mark land or remember important leaders. Dr. Tanaka thinks they are sacred objects, used in special ceremonies when boys become men. Carving the hard stone may be a way to show respect.
The stones are still there today. They are like a book in a language we are still learning to read. They make us think about how those old people see their world on a small island in a very large ocean.
1.What is the most likely meaning of the underlined word “ceremonies” in the passage?
A.special activities that follow old traditions.
B.children’s games or plays.
C.important public events or gatherings.
D.buildings or houses of a group of people.
2.Which of the following correctly describes the two experts’ ideas in the text?
A.Both experts believe the Bird-Man stones were made from other islands.
B.Dr. Vance thinks the stones are similar to Easter Island’s tradition, while Dr. Tanaka looks for a broader meaning.
C.Dr. Tanaka thinks the stones were used in different ways for different families.
D.Both experts agree that the stones are meaningless carvings.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.There was once a large city on Malden Island.
B.All the Bird-Man carvings look the same.
C.Dr. Tanaka’s ideas show the importance of the ocean environment to the islanders.
D.The writer claims to have found the one correct answer to the mystery.
4.What is the best title of this passage?
A.The Unknown Mystery of the Birdman Stone.
B.Birdman’s Journey into the Ocean.
C.Small Islanders’ World and Lives.
D.Why Human Makes Stones for Ceremonies.
Passage9
(25-26七年级上·江苏宿迁·期末)Before coming to France, I always thought that French clothes were very formal. But when I got to Paris, I came to know why France is always leading world fashion, and why Paris can attract (吸引) so many designers from all over the world to come.
On the boulevard of Champs-Elysees (香榭丽舍大街), there are many fashion shops of famous brands (品牌), such as Chanel, Dior and Pierre Cardin. However, in daily life, most Parisians (巴黎人) never wear clothes like those on the supermodels (超级模特). Instead, I find people in Paris often dress in very simple clothes and usually in dark colours.
This doesn’t stop French designers from making more and more new styles. But I would say people in Paris dress more formally than those in the rest of France. In other French cities, what people wear are usually casual dresses, such as T-shirts and jeans.
French people act as the fashion leaders, but they accept (接受) other clothes styles too. I live in the city of Montpellier in southern France near the Mediterranean Sea (地中海). There are many immigrants (移民) from Algeria, Morocco and other African countries. As a result, you can find a lot of young people dressed in the North African style.
1.What did the author (作者) think about French clothes before coming to France?
2.What kind of clothes do most Parisians wear in their daily life?
3.Why do many fashion designers like to come to Paris?
4.What clothes do people in other French cities usually wear?
5.Would you like to wear simple, dark clothes like Parisians, or bright, casual clothes? Why?

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.A
根据“She learns that Polynesian people once lived there in a small group with a leader. They have a special place for ceremonies, like a stone platform. Most birdman stones stand there.” 故选A。
根据“One idea connects it to stories from other Polynesian places, like Easter Island. Dr. Vance thinks the Malden stones are part of a similar idea.”以及“But another expert, Dr. Kenji Tanaka, has a different idea. He says we cannot just use the Easter Island story. The birdman on Malden Island looks different...Dr. Tanaka thinks the birdman might be a symbol that connects different ideas.”
Tanaka thinks the birdman might be a symbol that connects different ideas. ‘Birds fly in the sky and travel far over the sea. People live on land,’ he says. ‘The birdman is both. It could be a wise ancestor (祖先) who guides boats at sea. Or it could show how a leader must understand both his people and the powerful sea around them.’”
故选A。

How are you these days? You shared your favourite subjects with me in your last letter. I like English too. I think it is interesting and useful. You also like maths, but I am not good at it. I think it is too difficult. Maybe you can help me with it next time.
Our classes are over at 4:30 p.m. and I can get home at 5:00 p.m. But I seldom go home right after class because I take part in different activities. On Monday afternoon, I have a violin lesson for an hour. On Tuesday and Friday afternoon, I go to the reading club with my friends. We talk about the books and the writers, and we enjoy it so much. On Thursday, I go to the chess club. I often play chess for about an hour. What’s more, we have a school field trip every term. We often visit a farm. We can learn how to grow different kinds of crops (作物) and pick fruit. It is great fun.
On Saturday, I don’t have classes. I often practise singing in an art school. I like singing and I can sing better now. I usually go to the park with my friends or have a rest on Sunday. I am busy every day, but I enjoy my life very much.
