But if we look closely, heroes live next to us.   Mrs. Zhou is 58 years old. She is not famous. After retiring from a factory, she became a volunteer in her community. Every morning, she checks on three elderly neighbours who live alone. She buys vegetables for them, reads newspapers aloud and walks with them in the garden. During last winter’s heavy snow, she spent two hours clearing the path so the old people would not fall.   Li Ming, a 15-year-old student, is another example. One afternoon, he saw a little girl crying near the lake in the park. He rode his bike around the neighbourhood, asked at the gate and finally found her mother. His teacher said, “Li Ming did not wait for an adult. He just acted.”   A hero does not need to be perfect. A hero notices what needs to be done and does it with a kind heart. Sometimes the smallest act, done bravely and willingly, is the brightest light. 16.What does Mrs. Zhou do for the elderly neighbours? A.She teaches them to read books. B.She clears snow and buys vegetables for them. C.She takes them to hospital every week. D.She writes newspapers for the community. 17.How did Li Ming help the little girl? A.By calling the police at once. B.By waiting until her mother came back. C.By riding around and helping her find her mother. D.By giving her some money and going home. 18.What do Mrs. Zhou and Li Ming have in common? A.They are both famous in their city. B.They acted kindly without waiting for others. C.They work as teachers in a school. D.They saved someone from a fire. 19.What does the writer think a real hero is? A.A person who never makes mistakes. B.A person who only does big and dangerous things. C.A person who sees a need, then acts with kindness. D.A person who wants to be on TV. 20.What is the best title for the passage? A.Famous Scientists in China B.Heroes in Films and Books C.How to Become a Soldier D.Heroes Around Us 4 On a freezing December day in Tongxin County, Ningxia, the quiet winter air was suddenly broken by screams—a 4-year-old boy had fallen through the ice into the icy lake! People rushed to the edge, hearts sinking, but no one dared step onto the cracking surface. At that critical moment, 13-year-old Li Jiating, a seventh-grade student, stepped forward bravely. “I’m light—I’ll go!” she said. She took a long pipe handed to her by a bystander (旁观者) and crawled carefully toward the ice hole. As she reached out to give the pipe to the boy, the ice broke again. Both she and the boy fell into the freezing water. But Li Jiating didn’t let go. She held tightly onto the pipe until adults on the shore pulled her out. Soon after, firefighters arrived and rescued the boy. Soaked (浸湿) and shivering, Li Jiating quietly rode her bike home without saying a word. Her father asked about her wet clothes, and she smiled and “lied”: “A water truck splashed (泼洒) me!” It wasn’t until 11 p.m. that night, when her father’s sister called, that the father learned the truth. “I’m scared and sad, but also proud of her kindness,” he said. The boy’s parents were very grateful. They posted messages to find the “unknown hero” and visited Li Jiating with gifts and money. Though Li Jiating refused the money, they left fruits and a sheep. “This is our sincere thanks,” the boy’s father said. Many honors came to her. Her school named her “A Good Youth with Courage and Kindness”. The county government gave her a prize, and the hospital offered her free physical exams for life. Alibaba also gave her a 5,000-yuan award. Li Jiating’s story is like a beam of light. We praise her kindness, but we also need to teach minors (未成年人) to stay safe while helping others. Let bravery go with wisdom— this is the best way to protect their kindness and pass warmth. 21.Why did Li Jiating decide to crawl on the ice to save the boy? A.She was the strongest person in the crowd. B.She had received professional ice-rescue training before. C.She thought her light weight would not break the ice easily. When she was four years old, Cece became deaf and had to wear a hearing aid. As the only deaf student at her school, Cece wanted to help people better understand and communicate with her. When she was older, Cece wrote a graphic novel (连环画小说)《El Deafo》, which is partly based on her life but with talking rabbits instead of humans. In this book, Cece finds that she can use her hearing aid like a super power and become the hero El Deafo. The book was a huge success and won lots of awards. In an interview, Cece explained why she decided to make all the characters in《El Deafo》rabbits, “I wanted to show what it felt like to be the only deaf kid in my school,” she said. “I needed a good visual metaphor (视觉隐喻) , and rabbits, with their big ears and amazing hearing, were perfect for that. Actually, I felt just like the only rabbit whose big ears didn’t work—I had the ears for show, but little else.” The decision to write it as a graphic novel was also linked to her experience with deafness. She wanted to use speech balloons, which are used in almost all graphic novels, to show what my character is hearing or speaking in the story. “I want to call on more people to care for the deaf children—Although we could hardly hear, we still want to communicate with others,” she said. 26.What did Cece use in her graphic novel to show what the character hears or says? He saw villagers getting sick but having no medicine. “I must help them!” he thought. So, he left his home, carrying a basket and walking through mountains and rivers. Day after day, he tasted hundreds of herbs (草药)—some sweet, some bitter (苦的), some even poisonous (有毒的). One summer, a village child had a high fever with no medicine. Shennong climbed a hill. His hands were cut by some plant leaves, but he didn’t stop. He tried a green leaf, then another. Finally, he found a herb—when boiled, its juice cooled the child’s fever. The next day, the child laughed and played. Villagers cheered, “Shennong, you’re our hero!” He smiled, “We all help each other—this is how we stay strong.” Once, he ate a wrong plant and fell ill. His followers rushed to see him, but Shennong said, “If I don’t try, how will others find safe herbs?” Luckily, he drank the mountain spring water and got better. Later, he wrote down what he learned in a book, teaching people which herbs cure (治愈) fevers, cuts, or coughs. Shennong’s story teaches us: Work hard to help others, even if it’s not easy. They gave their lives in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Through their stories, people can clearly see what China’s wartime spirit truly means. ②To help young people understand the history better, the documentary team used AI technology. One important way was to use AI to bring back heroes’ images (肖像), especially for those with no photos left. First, the team talked carefully with local old people and collected information about the heroes. Then they drew simple black-and-white pictures. With the information, AI adjusted the pictures to be colorful and detailed images. This new way lets people finally see what the heroes looked like, and helps young people learn about their stories deeply. ③AI was also used in another way—turning photos into videos. For example, Zuo Quan, a general (将军) of the Eighth Route Army, was killed in 1942 and left behind only one family photo. After many times, the team used AI tools to turn this photo into a short video. In the video, Zuo holds his daughter and smiles. His wife looks at the girl with love, and the child looks at her father with bright eyes. ④“This AI video has moved people online,” said Ren, the director. He hopes young people can learn from these heroes. “Young people today may not face war, but they still need belief, love and pride for their country. That’s the true message of these stories.” ⑤With AI technology, the documentary not only keeps the memory of these heroes alive but also brings their stories closer to young people. By showing their faces and courage with AI photos and videos, the documentary helps young people understand the past better and makes them value the life today. 48.What do we know about the documentary? A.It’s black-and-white. B.It is about twelve wars. C.It came out last year. D.It tells wartime stories. 49.What does the underlined word “adjusted” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Let something grow. B.Forgot something easily. C.Made something change. D.Learnt something quickly. 50.What does the example of AI video show? A.People’s dream life in the future. B.AI makes the history come alive. C.AI is widely used in our daily life. D.It’s hard to stay safe in wartime. A Hero in My Heart _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. 现在,班上将举办一次英语分享活动,主题为“The Hero I Admire Most”。 In Unit Two of our English textbook, I have learned about many famous people. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. 1. In my heart, Yuan Longping is the most admirable national hero who has influenced me greatly. Born in Beijing in 1930, Yuan Longping witnessed people suffering from hunger in his early years. This inspired him to devote his whole life to rice research. For nearly 70 years, he worked tirelessly in rural fields, overcoming countless difficulties to develop high-yield rice. His rice has helped feed millions of people across over 60 countries. Though he achieved great success and won the Medal of the Republic, he lived a simple life and never chased fame or wealth. He passed away in 2021, but his spirit of dedication lives on. I will learn from him, stick to my dream and strive to be a useful person to society. 1. D.She wanted to get rewards from the boy’s parents. 22.Why did Li Jiating “lie” to her father about her wet clothes? A.She was afraid her father would be angry with her. B.She didn’t want her father to worry about her. C.She thought the experience was not worth mentioning. D.She wanted to keep her heroism a secret forever. 23.What’s the correct order of the events? ①Li Jiating fell into the water while trying to save the boy. ②The boy’s parents visited Li Jiating with gifts. ③A 4-year-old boy fell through the ice into the lake. ④Li Jiating was pulled out of the water by adults. ⑤Li Jiating’s father learned the truth from his sister. A.①④③⑤② B.③④①⑤② C.①③④②⑤ D.③①④⑤② 24.We can infer (推断) from the father’s words “I’m scared and sad, but also proud of her kindness” that ________. D.She used a light to find the boy. 5 People are afraid of difficulties, but sometimes it’s the difficulties and challenges that make us better people. Cece Bell’s story is a good example. A.Big ears. B.A hearing aid. C.Speech balloons. D.A list of instructions. 27.Which of the following best describes Cece Bell? A.Shy and quiet. B.Creative and brave. C.Funny and popular. D.She enjoyed showing off her big ears. 29.What is the main purpose of Cece Bell’s writing El Deafo? A.To tell a funny story about rabbits. B.To show her super power as a hero. C.To teach people how to use a hearing aid. D.To help people understand deaf children better. 6 TOWN CINEMA Type: History/War Language: Chinese Directed by: Chen Kaige, Xu Ke, Lin Chaoxian Actors: Wu Jing, Yi Yangqianxi Running Time: 149 minutes Feb. 14 (Mon.) He saw villagers getting sick but having no medicine. 1.表格第一栏指出人物身份:“As a nuclear physicist (核物理学家), Yu Min played an important role in this process.”,这直接说明于敏是一名核物理学家。 2.表格第二栏指出人物经历:“He was twice awarded the title of Combat Hero (战斗英雄).”,说明张富清两次被授予战斗英雄称号。 3.表格第三栏指出关键语句:“He is the first person in the world to develop a hybrid rice strain (杂交水稻品种).”,这是袁隆平被称作“杂交水稻之父”的原因。 4.文章开头给出短语:“many people have made great contributions to our country’s development”,说明单词“contributions”在此处含义为“贡献”。 5. 7.第二段中的句子“First, great people have a clear vision. I will help others and serve my community. For example, I can help clean the park or visit the old people.      This activity made me love our country more.
